The air was thick with anticipation, a vibrant hum that settled around us the moment we realized our lives were about to take another beautiful, unexpected turn. It feels surreal, yet incredibly exciting, to be sharing such deeply personal news again, especially since our last major announcement of this kind dates all the way back to 2010. This week has been a whirlwind of hushed conversations, joyful whispers, and the rapid spread of incredible news to our closest family and friends. We discovered our little secret on a Wednesday, and the subsequent 48 hours were a blur of excitement as we rushed to share the joy with our loved ones.

Our Sweetest Reveal: Telling Clara About Her New Role as Big Sister
Of course, there was one person whose reaction we were most eager, and perhaps a little nervous, to witness: our amazing daughter, Clara. We knew we wanted to tell her in a way that felt special and personal, far removed from the clinical setting of an ultrasound technician’s office. So, we hatched a plan. During our crucial appointment, we arranged a special playdate for Clara with her grandfather, ensuring she was happily distracted and unaware of the exciting secret unfolding. When we reunited, the big moment arrived. We presented her with a beautifully wrapped gift, a baby boy doll – which, surprisingly, proved to be quite the treasure hunt to find! It was a truly adorable moment, filled with eager anticipation, as we prompted her, “Okay, look in the bag to see if there’s a little boy or a little girl in Mommy’s belly!”

If there’s one thing Clara adores more than the satisfying tear of tissue paper, it’s undeniably baby dolls. The moment she laid eyes on her new baby boy, it was truly love at first sight. More importantly, and to our delight, she immediately connected the dots, understanding that this adorable little doll symbolized her soon-to-arrive little brother. Her reaction was priceless. Without missing a beat, she began doting on him, instinctively giving him his bottle and meticulously changing his tiny diapers. She even proudly boasted that she had known all along it was going to be a boy! When we playfully asked her what she wanted to name her new baby doll, her response was instant and emphatic: “Barnacles!” Sherry and I struggled, and failed, to stifle our laughter, but Clara, with all the seriousness a child can muster, quickly clarified that his full, proper name was actually Captain Barnacles, a beloved character from one of her current favorite shows, Octonauts. So, while she definitely won’t be naming her actual baby brother, we’ve affectionately started calling our bun-in-the-oven “the barnacle” ourselves a few times since then, a sweet reminder of her initial, heartwarming reaction.

From Guesswork to Gladness: The Path to Discovering Our Baby’s Gender
Initially, all of us, including Clara, had a strong hunch that we were expecting a girl. It was just a gut feeling, a gentle intuition that had settled in during the early weeks. However, as Sherry’s pregnancy progressed, our instincts began to subtly shift. This pregnancy journey has been distinctly different from our last; Sherry’s morning sickness, for example, has been much more persistent and intense this time around, a common anecdotal sign many people associate with carrying a boy. These subtle differences started to nudge our internal “gender predictor” in a new direction. And, almost serendipitously, Clara herself began asking for a brother, perhaps influenced by a few of her best friends who had recently welcomed baby brothers into their families. Regardless of the reason behind her preference, she couldn’t have been more thrilled with the news that she was indeed getting a little brother. And truly, neither could we. The thought of adding a son to our family brings a unique wave of excitement and anticipation.

After about the sixteenth Captain Barnacle diaper change, Clara, brimming with pride and unable to contain her excitement any longer, called up Nonna (my mom) via FaceTime. It was an incredibly sweet moment as she enthusiastically delivered the news, her voice alight with joy. Nonna, naturally, was just as excited to hear it, her face lighting up on the screen, sharing in Clara’s infectious happiness. These are the moments that truly make a pregnancy journey unforgettable – seeing the pure joy ripple through the family.

A Creative Gender Reveal: Sharing the News with Local Family
For my family here in town, we wanted to make the announcement an interactive and memorable experience. We decided to turn our gender reveal into a fun game. We managed to gather my parents, my sister, and her entire family for dinner last night at Panera – because, as we often joke, we’re super fancy and all! We arrived armed with a carefully prepared selection of blue and pink envelopes, each containing a special message. The idea was for each person to make their final guess by selecting either a pink envelope if they believed it was a girl, or a blue one if they thought it was a boy. The air was thick with playful speculation and good-natured ribbing as everyone carefully made their choice, adding an extra layer of excitement to our casual family meal.

Then came the big moment: we instructed everyone to tear into their chosen envelopes simultaneously. The goal was to see whose “baby-dar” (baby radar) was spot on! Inside all the blue envelopes were jubilant exclamations like “Yup!” “Bingo!” or “You betcha!” confirming their correct boy guess. Conversely, the pink envelopes delivered a playful “Nope!” “Try again!” or “Wrong-o!” We had an almost perfect 50/50 split in guesses, which made the reveal even more entertaining. Even though half of them were delightfully off-base, the entire room erupted in cheers and laughter. Everyone was absolutely thrilled, regardless of their initial prediction. It was truly a joy to watch their faces, illuminated with surprise and happiness, as they all pieced together the news at pretty much the exact same moment. The shared gasps, the smiles, and the immediate outpouring of congratulations made it a gender reveal we’ll cherish forever, cementing another wonderful memory with our beloved family.

Following our in-person reveal, we embarked on a flurry of other family and friend calls to spread the wonderful news even wider. Clara, ever the enthusiastic big sister-to-be, was absolutely awesome about boasting, “I’m getting a baby brother!” probably a hundred times over the phone to various friends and relatives. Her unadulterated excitement was contagious, adding an extra layer of joy to every conversation. And just like that, a new chapter began, full of promises and dreams. That, as they say, is history – the history of how our family officially grew by one more incredible future member.
Embracing the Journey: Preparing for Our Baby Boy
Both Sherry and I are beyond excited. Above all else, we are overwhelmingly thankful to know that there’s a healthy little “barnacle” growing steadily in there, absolutely regardless of its sex. However, being able to picture this child – this precious boy! – a bit more clearly in our minds makes the excitement that much more palpable and real. As much as two wonderful little girls would have been an absolute blast, we are genuinely looking forward to the entirely new experience of raising a son alongside our incredible daughter. The dynamic will be different, the lessons new, and the adventures undoubtedly unique. Not to mention, Sherry has already dived headfirst into the wonderful world of Pinterest, going delightfully crazy looking at countless nursery ideas, her creative mind already buzzing with possibilities.
It’s incredibly fun to think about the possibilities for that special room now that we know exactly who will be occupying it. It’s not that we’ll fill it with overly stereotypical “man things” or even make it exclusively blue and green (though, come to think of it, Clara’s original nursery was indeed a lovely blend of blue and green!). Rather, it’s just exciting to be able to talk about potential projects, specific color palettes, and unique art pieces that will truly make this space his own. The funny thing is, out of every single room in this entire house, the nursery was the only one that still had remnants of pink trim when we first bought the place. A quirky little detail that now adds a touch of irony and humor to our story.

Good thing the room is already painted a crisp, clean white, providing the perfect blank canvas! The less-than-ideal news is that the room is currently serving as a temporary storage space, housing a rather impressive collection of random junk. But, that’s all part of the journey, isn’t it? Guess it’s officially time to roll up our sleeves, clear out the clutter, and start working on transforming that space into a cozy, welcoming haven for our new baby boy. The transformation of the room will mirror the transformation of our family, growing and adapting to welcome our newest member. We can’t wait to share the progress and the finished result with you all!
