What’s the perfect remedy after diving deep into the world of paint and primer, leaving you feeling utterly exhausted? For us, it was an immediate escape to the serene embrace of the beach. And what better way to commemorate our fourth wedding anniversary – yes, today marks the big day! – than by sharing cherished memories and vibrant photos from our recent coastal adventure? While we’ve covered our wedding journey and anniversary milestones extensively over the past three years of Wedding Week, this year, the story is all about sand, sun, and unparalleled family joy. Join us as we recount our unforgettable journey to the Outer Banks, a premier destination for family-friendly getaways.

A Much-Needed Getaway to the Outer Banks of North Carolina
In celebration of a long holiday weekend and a well-deserved break, we enthusiastically bid farewell to our freshly “grellow-ed” kitchen and eagerly embraced the promise of golden sand and warm sunshine. Our destination? The picturesque Outer Banks of North Carolina, an idyllic coastal stretch known for its charming towns and stunning natural beauty. Typically, our beach excursions lead us to Delaware, where my parents reside. However, with the joyful, albeit continuous, expansion of our family – thanks to my siblings, cousins, and yours truly insisting on having adorable babies (who knew such tiny humans could take up so much space?!) – our usual spot has become a tad too cozy for our burgeoning clan.
To accommodate all 21 of us, including five energetic children under the age of two, we collectively decided to pool our resources and rent a spacious, multi-generational beach house in the charming town of Duck, NC. This decision allowed everyone ample room to spread out and truly unwind. The goal was simple: clock some much-needed family R&R. While true ‘rest’ with five curious toddlers around might be a relative concept, the sheer joy and unforgettable moments we shared more than made up for any lost sleep. This multi-family vacation proved to be an exceptional way to bring everyone together, creating lasting memories against the backdrop of one of North Carolina’s most beloved coastal regions. Duck, NC, is renowned for its tranquil beaches and welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal choice for large family gatherings seeking both relaxation and adventure.

Beach Days and Unforgettable Laughter in Duck, NC
Even if true ‘rest’ was a luxury reserved for another time, the abundance of fun certainly knew no bounds. Our daughter, Clara, and the beach continued to solidify their heartwarming friendship, much to our delight. Her infectious happiness, whether she was meticulously digging in the soft, warm sand or fearlessly splashing in the gentle surf, brought immense joy to her water-loving mom and dad. We were particularly thrilled to discover a natural sandbar that created a perfectly calm and shallow wading area, ideal for little ones. This meant endless hours spent in the water, most of which were joyfully dedicated to “jumping” over gentle waves and erupting into fits of hysterical laughter. The Outer Banks provided the perfect backdrop for these precious moments, offering calm conditions that made beach days effortless and enjoyable for our entire family, especially the little ones. The vast, clean beaches of Duck, NC, are truly a paradise for toddlers, allowing them to safely explore and play.

From Ocean Waves to Private Pool Splashes: Double the Aquatic Fun!
Beyond the magnificent ocean, our rented beach house in Duck, NC, offered another fantastic aquatic escape: its very own private pool in the backyard. This was a common and much-appreciated amenity among the homes on our street, providing a wonderful alternative or addition to beach days. The pool became a hub for quieter, calmer water play, offering a refreshing retreat from the sand and salt. Clara, who has recently mastered the adorable pronunciation of the word “ball,” was absolutely ecstatic when my thoughtful aunt arrived armed with a huge bag filled with them. Her delight was palpable as she reveled in her new favorite pastime: hoarding and playing with these spherical treasures in the pool. It’s safe to say, balls have officially ascended to the top of her “most favorite things in the world” list, providing endless entertainment and cementing her love for all things round and bouncy. This dual access to both the ocean and a private pool truly enhanced our Outer Banks family vacation experience, catering to every family member’s preference for water activities, making our Duck, NC beach rental an absolute hit.

Exploring History: A Visit to the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kitty Hawk
Despite some notably crazy humidity, the weather during our Outer Banks stay was generally splendid, gifting us plenty of sunny days for beach and pool enjoyment. However, we embraced the single overcast day as a perfect opportunity to delve into a bit of local history and culture. Our chosen excursion led us to the iconic Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kitty Hawk, a site steeped in the pioneering spirit of aviation. This visit proved to be surprisingly captivating, even for two self-proclaimed non-aviation buffs like ourselves. Walking the very grounds where the monumental first flight actually took place stirred a profound sense of wonder and respect. The well-preserved site vividly narrates the incredible story of innovation and perseverance, showcasing the determination that led to human flight.
We spent time tracing the path of that groundbreaking first flight, marked by a series of stones. Here’s Sherry, thoughtfully seated on the stone that signifies where the inaugural flight concluded – a mere 12 seconds and 120 feet in distance. The subsequent stones behind it commemorate the three other experimental flights that day, with the final and most extensive journey covering an impressive 852 feet and lasting 59 seconds. It was truly humbling to stand in the exact spot where human ingenuity first defied gravity, setting the stage for modern air travel. The visitor center and museum further enriched our understanding, with fascinating exhibits detailing the lives and work of Orville and Wilbur Wright. Further along, you can spot me standing proudly in front of a section of the majestic monument, striking what I thought was a rather fitting “smarty pants” pose, perfectly capturing the awe of the moment and paying homage to these incredible innovators. This historical detour is a must-do when exploring the Outer Banks, offering a unique blend of education and inspiration.

Clara’s Spherical Adventures: Balls, Balloons, and Birthday Joy
Did you happen to notice the distinct spherical object Clara was clutching in the photograph above? Indeed, it became something of an endearing theme throughout our entire Outer Banks family trip! Her newly discovered, fervent love for all things round and bouncy seamlessly extended from balls to colorful balloons. This delightful obsession reached its peak during a special shared birthday celebration for my sister Emily and my cousin’s daughter, Elsa, which coincided with our stay. Clara, dressed in her finest party attire, was absolutely mesmerized. Watching the vibrant balloons gently float and bob around filled her with unbridled joy, her tiny face alight with wonder. Grandparents, aunts, and cousins gathered around, all captivated by her infectious enthusiasm. We have at least a dozen more photographs just like this one, each capturing a different facet of her pure, unadulterated delight. It was a beautiful reminder of the simple joys that make multi-generational family vacations so precious, truly highlighting the magic of childhood on the North Carolina coast.

Coastal Aesthetics: Exploring Beach House Design and Local Finds
For those still craving more glimpses of our Outer Banks beach experience, we’ve curated an extensive collection of additional photos available on Flickr. While we harbored a secret hope that our rented beach house would boast unique design elements worthy of a dedicated “House Crashing” post – much like the inspiring features we’ve shared previously here – we found its interior decor to be, understandably, rather generic. This practical approach to rental property design makes perfect sense, especially when accommodating a lively group of 21, including five babies and sixteen older children and adults who are all keen to make themselves comfortable without fear of damaging precious items. The focus on durability and functionality often takes precedence in Outer Banks beach rentals, especially those designed for large groups and multi-family stays.
Nevertheless, one particular design choice did capture our keen eye and spark our interest: a charming shaker shingle treatment adorning the interior stairwell. This distinctive feature immediately stood out in the otherwise standard decor, adding a touch of bespoke coastal charm.

It beautifully mimicked the shaker shingles found on the exterior of the house, offering a cohesive architectural narrative. More than just a simple wall covering, it served as a delightful, beach-inspired twist on traditional wainscoting. The texture and natural tones brought an authentic coastal living feel indoors. While this particular aesthetic might not seamlessly translate to our own home’s style, it felt absolutely perfect and organically at home within this charming seaside setting, truly enhancing the overall ambiance of the Outer Banks beach house. This thoughtful design detail demonstrated how subtle elements can significantly contribute to the coastal vibe, even in a rental property.

Treasures and Trinkets: Our Outer Banks Thrift Store Haul (and a Giant Bear Nutcracker!)
Since the beach house itself didn’t entirely fulfill our design-craving senses during the trip, we dedicated some time to exploring the local scene. Our mission: to troll through charming thrift stores and unique home furnishing boutiques scattered across the Outer Banks. These coastal towns often hide the most delightful and quirky treasures, from vintage nautical finds to artisan crafts! Let’s just say our adventure yielded an abundance of intriguing items that we were sorely tempted to bring back home, perhaps as unique souvenirs or to infuse our own home with a touch of coastal flair. Among the many fascinating finds, one stood out for its sheer eccentricity and memorable presence: a truly gigantic, curly-haired bear nutcracker! It was an absolute showstopper, prompting laughs and discussions, and certainly unforgettable. We’ll be compiling a dedicated post about all our unique discoveries and surprising souvenirs a little later on, so stay tuned for that quirky reveal and more Outer Banks thrifting tips!
For now, we’d like to leave you with a truly special memory: the very first photograph of all four of us together. Yes, you read that right – the first family portrait since our wonderful Clara was born! It almost feels a bit scandalous to admit it took us so long, doesn’t it? Shame, shame, shame on us for procrastinating on this precious moment!

It only took us a mere 13.5 months to accomplish this momentous feat. But better late than never when it comes to capturing those priceless family memories, right? The challenges of getting a perfect family photo with a toddler are real, but the reward is immense.
