Crafting Halloween’s Creepy Crawlies: Spiders and Snakes

Welcome to our annual Halloween decor spectacular! This year, our little Clara’s endearing fascination with “creatures” – yes, snakes and spiders are among her favorites – combined with her current apple and pumpkin obsession, set the perfect stage for our festive theme. We playfully dubbed it “Nature’s Spooky Side,” echoing Will Ferrell’s iconic Robert Goulet impression on SNL. This versatile theme perfectly embraces the wholesome charm of autumn, with pumpkins, gourds, and crisp apples, while also making room for delightfully eerie elements like spiders, black crows, and slithering snakes. It’s a harmonious blend of seasonal beauty and classic Halloween chills, ensuring our home feels both festive and a touch frightful.

DIY Spooky Transformations: Crafting Our Creepy Critters

Diving into Halloween preparations always brings a thrill, and this year was no exception. My first stop was Michael’s, where I unearthed some fantastic finds. I picked up a handful of inexpensive spiders – a mere $1.99 each – and some charming wooden snakes, which, amusingly, I discovered in the wood toy aisle, far from the designated Halloween section. But as anyone who knows me can attest, I often find inspiration in unexpected places!

From Playful to Petrifying: Enhancing the Spiders

The spiders, though inherently spooky, had playful orange bands on their legs that needed a more menacing touch. A simple black Sharpie was my secret weapon. With a few swift strokes, I colored over the orange, transforming them into sleek, entirely black arachnids. This small modification made a huge difference, instantly elevating them from toy-like to strikingly realistic and much scarier additions to our decor. It’s amazing what a little bit of black can do to amplify the eerie factor, proving that sometimes the simplest DIY projects yield the most dramatic results.

The Ghostly Charm of White Snakes

As for the wooden snake toys, a distinct vision immediately materialized in my mind: flat white. There’s an undeniable haunting elegance to ceramic-like snakes, an ancient, ghostly quality that resonates with the Halloween spirit. I considered glossy white, but decided against it, fearing it might appear too sleek, too modern. Instead, I gravitated towards a flat finish, aiming for a chalky, ethereal look that felt more spectral and timeless. This choice would ensure they complemented the overall “Nature’s Spooky Side” theme perfectly, blending natural forms with an otherworldly aesthetic.

And the result? I absolutely adore them! I mean, who’s surprised? Probably no one! They turned out exactly as I envisioned, adding that perfect touch of eerie sophistication. These small DIY projects not only saved money but also allowed for a truly personalized and unique Halloween display, reflecting our specific theme and style.

Spookifying Our Spaces: Console Table & Kitchen Mantel

It’s a beloved annual tradition to transform our console table into a festive Halloween display. You can catch glimpses of our past creations here and here from previous years. So, naturally, this was the first surface to get its dose of spooky magic this season. It’s often the first thing guests see when they enter, setting the tone for the entire house.

The Console Table: A Harmony of Creepy and Cozy

To infuse a vibrant touch of autumn color into the display, I incorporated a few faux apples, which I had scored on super clearance from Pottery Barn a while back. These bright pops of red beautifully contrasted with the delicate, aged spiderweb material I unearthed from my dedicated Halloween tupperware bin – yes, it’s labeled, and yes, I’ll allow you a moment to mutter “dork” under your breath! This bin is a treasure trove of seasonal decor that makes setting up year after year a breeze, ensuring I always have a foundational collection of beloved spooky items.

Beyond these new additions, the console table maintained its usual charm, enhanced by the juxtaposition of our new ghostly snakes and a menacing black spider. These Halloween elements nestled perfectly among existing pieces like my oversized vase from ZGallerie, the versatile faux tray from Target (which is cleverly a box for a wedding photo album!), my unique antler candlestick from West Elm, and the miniature yard sale greenhouse with its lush faux plant from Ikea. This mix of everyday elegance with unexpected spooky accents creates a dynamic and inviting display that truly captures the essence of our “Nature’s Spooky Side” theme.

And miraculously, our little Clara has yet to disturb the console table decor – she can’t quite reach up there yet, thankfully! Although, typing that out has probably jinxed us! It was adorable, though, to capture a picture from her perspective. We’ve, of course, held her up to admire the spiders and snakes, so now she confidently walks by, offering sweet pronouncements like “bye bye spider” and “hi apples!” Her innocence makes the spooky decor feel even more charming.

The Kitchen Mantel: Rustic Charm Meets Eerie Glow

Next on our decorating agenda was the kitchen mantel. I realize I never managed to get a perfectly straight-on shot, so please forgive the angles! But I assure you, it exudes its own unique brand of Halloween charm, perfectly complementing the console table’s style and continuing our overarching theme. Mantels are such focal points in a home, offering an ideal canvas for seasonal expression.

Here, you’ll find an assortment of green and white gourds and pumpkins, adding natural textures and a rustic touch. These are beautifully intermingled with a collection of mismatched candlesticks, lending an eclectic and storied feel to the display. The real showstoppers, however, are my gory little blood-dripping candles, which I crafted with great satisfaction (you can find the DIY tutorial here). These candles cast an incredibly eerie and atmospheric glow, instantly transforming the mantel into a truly spooky centerpiece. The combination of natural elements with these handcrafted horrors truly brings the “Nature’s Spooky Side” theme to life.

To further personalize the mantel, I incorporated some beloved books that I eagerly pull out every year from my trusty Halloween bin. Titles like “Midnight In The Garden of Good & Evil” and “Everything Bad Is Good For You” add a touch of literary mystery and intellectual macabre to the display. Nestled among them is my faithful faux crow, a wise and slightly sinister addition that I picked up from Michael’s a few years back. The crow, a classic symbol of Halloween, perfectly ties into our nature theme while enhancing the overall spooky aesthetic. These familiar pieces make the mantel feel lived-in and loved, yet still wonderfully eerie.

Don’t mind the slightly crooked candle in this picture – it just adds to the authentic, slightly unsettling vibe, right? Ooh, spooky!

More Spooky Corners and Cherished Traditions

While the console table and kitchen mantel are beautifully spookified, I still have a few more spots around the house that I’m eager to transform with a touch of Halloween magic. Decorating for the seasons is an ongoing process, a joyful evolution that adapts to new inspirations and beloved traditions. It’s about creating an atmosphere that resonates with the festive spirit, making our home feel like a cozy, yet delightfully eerie, haven for autumn.

And just for a bit of fun and a trip down memory lane, I thought I’d share some cherished photos from Halloweens past. These images are a testament to our family’s enduring love for this holiday and the creative ways we’ve celebrated it through the years. You can find more details on the adventures captured in these pictures and videos here and here. Each year brings new themes, new DIY projects, and new memories, but the spirit of playful spookiness always remains.
