Have you ever heard of Ocean Springs, Mississippi? For many, this charming coastal gem remains an undiscovered treasure, and we were no exception! Our initial encounter with Ocean Springs was through glowing features in prestigious publications like Southern Living’s 15 Most Adorable Small Towns and USA Today’s 10 Best Coastal Small Towns, where it proudly claimed the #1 spot. Intrigued by the high praise, our family embarked on a journey a few months ago to experience its allure firsthand. The town did not merely meet expectations; it surpassed them with flying colors! We had once considered a brief detour through Ocean Springs during our New Orleans trip two years prior, but we are now profoundly grateful that we didn’t relegate it to a quick pitstop. This coastal jewel truly deserved a dedicated trip of its own, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in its unique charm and vibrant atmosphere.

Ocean Springs effortlessly lived up to its reputation as an adorable, small, and historically rich town, offering an abundance of activities and sights to explore. Its captivating ambiance strikingly reminded us of Cape Charles, the picturesque Virginia beach town where we once renovated two homes. Both destinations share an exceptional walkability, boasting a delightful array of unique shops and inviting restaurants. Moreover, they are nestled along tranquil bays with shallow, calm waters, providing an idyllic playground for children. This parallel between the two towns underscored Ocean Springs’ genuine appeal as a family-friendly coastal retreat.

Our visit to Ocean Springs took place in late November, coinciding with our children’s Thanksgiving break. Consequently, our itinerary didn’t include extensive beach time, though the pleasant weather often reached the low 70s each day, hinting at the town’s year-round appeal. Despite not indulging in water-based activities, we discovered an impressive array of engaging pursuits that kept us thoroughly entertained throughout our stay in Ocean Springs. The town’s vibrant downtown, historic sites, and welcoming atmosphere offered plenty to explore beyond its beautiful waterfront.
Discovering Ocean Springs, Mississippi: Location and Accessibility
Nestled gracefully on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Ocean Springs holds a prime location, directly across the Biloxi Bay from its larger neighbor, Biloxi. Its geographical position makes it an ideal stop for travelers exploring the Southern United States. From our home in Northwest Florida, the drive to Ocean Springs is approximately three hours westward. For those venturing from the vibrant city of New Orleans, the journey is a remarkably convenient 90 minutes eastward, making it a perfect weekend escape or a charming addition to a broader Gulf Coast adventure. This strategic location enhances its accessibility and appeal to a diverse range of visitors seeking an authentic Southern experience.

During our delightful visit to Ocean Springs, we spent the majority of our time on foot, immersing ourselves in the historic downtown and the scenic beachfront. Thanks to our strategically located Airbnb in a supremely walkable area, we literally didn’t need to use our car once! This effortless accessibility allowed us to explore at our own pace, discovering charming parks, quaint shops, diverse restaurants, whimsical toy and candy stores, and, of course, meandering through the captivating historic neighborhoods. It truly embodied the essence of a perfect laid-back, slow-paced family getaway, where every turn revealed a new delight and the gentle rhythm of coastal life embraced us.
Finding Your Perfect Retreat: Where to Stay in Ocean Springs, MS
Ocean Springs offers a diverse and appealing array of lodging options, catering to every taste and preference. From cozy short-term rentals to elegant boutique hotels and welcoming bed & breakfasts, visitors are spoilt for choice. The town has embraced modern hospitality with trendy selections like the stylish, contemporary cabins at The Beatnik Motel, which stand out for their unique design and relaxed ambiance. Whether you’re seeking a historical charm or a sleek, modern escape, Ocean Springs provides an abundance of comfortable and distinctive places to call home during your stay.

Our recent stay was in a dog-friendly Airbnb conveniently located just off one of the main downtown streets. While the rental was clean and well-stocked, our explorations revealed that specific spot might not be our top recommendation for future visits due to some noise from adjacent restaurants. For a more tranquil and equally charming experience, we would highly suggest looking into accommodations south of Government Street next time. These areas offer a quieter, more residential feel while still being incredibly walkable to downtown attractions. One particular Airbnb that consistently catches our eye, though a bit on the pricier side, is the beautiful Gaslamp House, known for its exquisite design and prime location. When planning your stay, consider researching these quieter, picturesque neighborhoods for an even more serene Ocean Springs experience.

Beyond the array of charming Airbnbs, Ocean Springs also boasts an impressive selection of cool and inviting hotels. During our strolls, we had the pleasure of passing by The Roost Boutique Hotel, which immediately struck us with its sophisticated exterior resembling an updated old farmhouse. A quick peek at their website revealed an absolutely stunning pool area, promising a luxurious and relaxing escape. The thoughtful design and inviting atmosphere make The Roost a highly appealing option for those seeking a stylish and comfortable stay, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring the town’s vibrant attractions.

Just a short walk closer to the heart of downtown Ocean Springs, you’ll discover The Springs Hotel. This stylish establishment not only offers comfortable accommodations but also houses a truly unique and appealing floral and gift shop called Palmette, which we’ll delve into more later. It was, in fact, the magnetic pull of Palmette that led Sherry to march so determinedly into the hotel in the image below, eager to explore its offerings. The dual nature of The Springs Hotel, combining hospitality with a curated shopping experience, makes it a distinctive and memorable place to stay or simply visit while exploring Ocean Springs.

While I patiently waited outside with our dog, Penny, Sherry had the delightful opportunity to sneak a few peeks inside The Springs Hotel while she was shopping. She reported back with enthusiasm, praising the hotel’s interior design. It was clear from her description that every detail had been meticulously curated, resulting in a super well-designed and aesthetically pleasing space. This glimpse confirmed the high standard of design and hospitality that Ocean Springs offers, even within its boutique hotel scene.

And speaking of meticulous design, one particular detail at The Springs Hotel truly captured Sherry’s attention: the bathroom. Just take a look at the image below! The thoughtful decor, elegant fixtures, and overall ambiance of the bathroom were a testament to the hotel’s commitment to creating a luxurious and memorable guest experience. It’s often said that the quality of a hotel can be judged by its bathrooms, and in this case, The Springs Hotel certainly made a statement, showcasing impeccable style even in the most functional spaces.

Overall, our experience confirmed that the level of lodging options available in Ocean Springs is remarkably impressive. We were definitely pleasantly surprised by the variety, quality, and unique charm of the boutique hotels, B&Bs, and short-term rentals. Whether you’re looking for a quaint, historic stay or a modern, stylish retreat, Ocean Springs offers a fantastic selection that enhances the overall visitor experience, ensuring comfort and convenience during your coastal getaway.
Culinary Delights: Where To Eat in Ocean Springs, Mississippi
While we might not consider ourselves refined food connoisseurs, our vacations invariably gravitate around the joy of discovery through food. Ocean Springs truly shone in this regard, presenting a plethora of exceptional restaurant options that were not only delicious but also wonderfully kid and dog-friendly. During our compact 48-hour visit, we indulged in a culinary journey that included two breakfasts, two brunches, and two dinners, generously complemented by several delightful dessert stops. Here’s a curated list of the fantastic establishments we patronized, with more detailed insights and tempting photos to follow:
- Bright Eyed Brew Co
- The TatoNut Shop (donuts)
- Fat Spoon Cafe
- Lady May
- Glory Bound Gyro Co
- Pop Brothers (popsicles)
- Candy Cottage
Bright Eyed Brew Co.

Bright Eyed Brew Co stands out as an excellent morning coffee spot, housed in the charming little building pictured above. For the truly dedicated coffee aficionado or those seeking a unique stay, there’s even a one-room Airbnb tucked away in the back! The tell-tale sign of a truly great coffee establishment is often its popularity, and Bright Eyed Brew Co certainly passed this test with flying colors. Even on a random Monday morning in November, the line stretched out the door, affirming its status as a local favorite and a must-visit for anyone craving a quality brew in Ocean Springs.

The TatoNut Shop: A Donut Lover’s Paradise
Tucked away in another endearingly cute building, The TatoNut Shop is an absolute haven for anyone seeking exceptional coffee paired with delectable donuts. Conveniently located just a couple of streets from our Airbnb, this spot garnered immense praise, with one glowing review for our rental even proclaiming TatoNut’s offerings as the best donuts they had ever tasted. This bold claim set our expectations high, and the shop certainly delivered on its promise of quality and flavor.

We eagerly indulged in some of their generously oversized creations, specifically the famed Katrina and Praline donuts, both of which proved to be utterly delicious and satisfying. Each bite was a testament to their artisanal craft and commitment to flavor. Our only lingering regret from this delightful experience is that we didn’t manage to return and explore more of their extensive range of specialty flavors. A return visit to truly savor the full TatoNut experience and discover new favorites is undoubtedly high on our list for our next trip to Ocean Springs.

Beyond the delightful donut experience, we also savored a fantastic brunch at the Fat Spoon Cafe. While we were too engrossed in the delicious food and lively atmosphere to snap any photos, its reputation for hearty, flavorful dishes certainly precedes it. The cafe provided a welcoming setting and a memorable meal, solidifying its place as another excellent dining option in Ocean Springs for a satisfying brunch experience.
Lady May: A Family Favorite for Dinner & Brunch
Lady May quickly became such a firm family favorite that we found ourselves dining there twice during our short visit: once for a delightful dinner and then returning the very next morning for a satisfying brunch. The restaurant boasts a fantastic outdoor patio, perfect for enjoying the pleasant Ocean Springs weather. Its menu is a crowd-pleaser, expertly balancing diverse options from delicious flatbread pizzas and juicy burgers to classic omelets and fluffy waffles, ensuring there’s something to satisfy every palate, from kids to adults.

Glory Bound Gyro Co: Unexpectedly Delicious
Our very first dinner in Ocean Springs was at Glory Bound Gyro Co, a place we later discovered is a sister restaurant to the beloved Lady May. While it also offers familiar options like burgers, salads, and pizzas, its true specialty lies in its extensive selection of gyros, featuring countless combinations of toppings and sauces. The atmosphere might not be fancy, but the food was incredibly good – so good, in fact, that we almost returned for a second night! Ultimately, we opted for Lady May, but Glory Bound Gyro Co left a lasting impression with its flavorful, satisfying, and unpretentious fare, making it a highly recommended spot for a casual yet delicious meal.

Pop Brothers: Gourmet Popsicles in Cash Alley
After an enjoyable long walk exploring the town, we treated ourselves to some refreshing gourmet popsicles at Pop Brothers. This delightful spot is strategically located in the uniquely charming “Cash Alley,” an area celebrated for its vibrant overhead display of colorful umbrellas and captivating graphic sidewalk art, creating a truly Instagrammable backdrop. Pop Brothers offers dozens of artisan popsicle flavors, ensuring a delightful choice for everyone; I opted for the distinct Vietnamese Coffee, while Sherry savored the rich chocolate peanut butter. For an extra dollar, we highly recommend elevating your treat by having it dipped in decadent chocolate – a small indulgence that makes a big difference in flavor and experience!

Regrettably, our timing meant we missed out on experiencing a classic New Orleans-style snow cone from the nearby Caboose Cones, which had unfortunately closed for the winter season during our late November visit. The allure of its refreshing treats, especially given its iconic location housed within a charming train caboose, suggests it’s undoubtedly a quintessential spot to cool off and enjoy a sweet delight during the warm summer months. It remains high on our list for a future summer trip to Ocean Springs.

Our culinary and sweet adventure continued with a delightful stop at the Candy Cottage, conveniently located right next door to Lady May. This charming shop is a paradise for anyone with a sweet tooth, offering an incredible array of novelty candies and an impressive selection of custom chocolate creations. Beyond the usual favorites, the Candy Cottage truly shines with its unique, artisanal confections, making it a perfect spot to find a special treat or a delicious souvenir to remember your Ocean Springs visit.
Exploring Ocean Springs: Unforgettable Things To Do in MS
While the pristine beaches and tranquil bay waters are undoubtedly a major draw for visitors to Ocean Springs, our November trip proved that the town offers an abundance of engaging activities beyond aquatic pursuits. Our days were primarily filled with the simple yet profound pleasure of walking around, exploring the historic streets, dropping into unique local shops, and soaking in the beauty of the distinct neighborhoods. This immersive approach allowed us to truly appreciate the charm and character that define Ocean Springs, even when the water activities weren’t a focus.

Much of Historic Downtown Ocean Springs exudes an enchanting atmosphere, characterized by scenes reminiscent of the streets pictured above and below. Visitors are greeted by cozy sidewalks shaded by massive, ancient oak trees, creating a picturesque canopy. Along these inviting pathways, you’ll discover a delightful succession of fun little shops, serene parks, and charming homes, each contributing to the town’s unique character. This blend of natural beauty and historical architecture makes every stroll through downtown Ocean Springs an experience in itself, inviting exploration and discovery at every turn.

Ocean Springs also boasts a surprisingly vibrant and celebrated art scene, with one of its most popular downtown attractions being the renowned Walter Anderson Museum of Art. Dedicated to the works of the acclaimed artist Walter Anderson, the museum offers a profound glimpse into his life and nature-inspired art, a true cultural highlight for visitors. Additionally, many locals and tourists alike rave about Shearwater Pottery, a family-run pottery studio with a rich history of producing distinctive and collectible pieces. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to visit during its open hours, a missed opportunity we hope to rectify on our next trip, as it’s highly regarded for its artistic heritage and unique creations.

Just one block down from the Walter Anderson Museum, you’ll find the previously mentioned Springs Hotel, which is also home to the delightful Palmette. This unique establishment functions as both a sophisticated floral studio and an artfully curated gift shop, making it a truly exceptional stop for visitors. Palmette offers a beautiful selection of fresh flowers, exquisite home decor items, and unique gifts, reflecting a refined aesthetic that perfectly complements the hotel’s charm. Its presence adds another layer of artistic and retail appeal to Ocean Springs’ already vibrant downtown.

While I enjoyed some fresh air outside with Penny, Sherry and the kids embarked on a shopping expedition within Palmette. Based on the considerable amount of time they spent inside, and the excited reports afterwards, it was clear that Palmette quickly became one of their absolute favorite stops during our entire Ocean Springs visit. Its unique offerings and charming ambiance evidently left a significant impression, reinforcing its reputation as a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the town’s vibrant retail scene.

Among their treasures found at Palmette, Sherry acquired a striking brass tiger pendant, which she now wears constantly and absolutely adores. This particular piece perfectly encapsulates the unique and memorable items available at Palmette, demonstrating their curated selection of distinctive jewelry and gifts that truly resonate with shoppers. It serves as a beautiful and cherished memento of our delightful time exploring the charming shops of Ocean Springs.

While the names of every delightful store we popped into might have blurred with the joyful memories, the true magic of Ocean Springs’ shopping experience lies in this very aspect: the continuous discovery. There was always something intriguing to see, a unique item to uncover, or a local artisan’s craft to admire. Unlike generic shopping districts, Ocean Springs offers a collection of independent boutiques and specialty shops, each with its own distinct character, ensuring that every exploration is filled with pleasant surprises and genuine finds. It’s an authentic shopper’s paradise for those who appreciate originality and local flair.

One small wish we held during our exploration of Ocean Springs was for a dedicated local bookshop. We always cherish the experience of discovering independent bookstores while on vacation, as they offer a unique window into a community’s literary soul. However, the town certainly provided a charming alternative; we frequently stumbled upon several delightful Little Free Libraries scattered throughout, offering a heartwarming glimpse into local literary sharing and a close second to our bookstore quest. These small, community-driven book exchanges added an extra layer of charm and intellectual curiosity to our walks.

Adding to the town’s appeal, it was especially delightful to be downtown as preparations for the holiday season were actively underway. The festive spirit was palpable, and we even had the unique pleasure of witnessing the toy store actively hanging its decorations, transforming its facade into a festive wonderland right before our eyes. This glimpse into the local holiday traditions and community engagement made our visit feel even more special and timely, showcasing Ocean Springs’ vibrant spirit beyond its usual charm.

In addition to perusing the diverse shops downtown, we thoroughly enjoyed wandering through some of the residential streets, admiring the distinctive architecture and charming homes. Before our visit, we hadn’t consciously formed an image of what a “quintessential coastal Mississippi” neighborhood might look like, but Ocean Springs undeniably embodies that very essence. The town exudes a palpable New Orleans vibe, characterized by its beautifully preserved old homes, inviting local shops, and enchanting tree-lined streets. This harmonious blend creates an atmosphere that feels both historically rich and vibrantly alive.

The residential areas of Ocean Springs are a feast for the eyes, adorned with many homes featuring sprawling Southern porches perfect for sipping sweet tea, classic picket fences that add to their charm, and majestic, ancient oak trees draped in enchanting Spanish moss. This combination of architectural details and natural beauty creates a distinctly Southern, picturesque landscape. The pervasive presence of these mossy oaks, in particular, lends an ethereal, timeless quality to the streets, making every stroll a journey through a scene of classic Southern elegance.

Perhaps the most compelling testament to our experience in Ocean Springs is the fact that we departed with a strong desire to return. While our short visit allowed us to uncover many of the town’s highlights, there’s a distinct feeling that we merely scratched the surface. We long for more time to fully soak in its serene beauty, to relax completely into its inviting, laid-back vibe, and perhaps to explore the town on bicycles or simply unwind at the beach on a warm summer’s day. Ocean Springs truly has a way of captivating its visitors, leaving them yearning for another opportunity to immerse themselves in its unique coastal charm.

Oh, and on that next visit, one thing is absolutely non-negotiable: I really, truly want to finally get one of those legendary snow cones from the train caboose. That missed treat from Caboose Cones remains a sweet promise for our anticipated return to Ocean Springs.
