Scoring a Restoration Hardware Table on a Budget

Transforming Our Kitchen: Finding the Perfect Reclaimed Wood Dining Table

Every homeowner knows the struggle: finding that one piece of furniture that perfectly fits your space, your lifestyle, and your budget. For us, that quest centered around our kitchen’s eat-in area. For too long, a small, disproportionate pedestal table occupied the spot, barely accommodating our family and certainly not up to the task of hosting larger gatherings. But today, dear readers, we’re thrilled to share some incredibly exciting news: we’ve finally found its replacement, and it’s everything we hoped for and more!

A Functional and Stylish Upgrade for Our Eat-In Kitchen

This isn’t just any table; it’s a game-changer for our kitchen. The old pedestal table, while quaint, was simply too small and awkward for the space, making meal times feel cramped and entertaining a logistical challenge. Our new addition is not only significantly more proportionate but also incredibly functional. With its generous dimensions, we can comfortably seat six, and even eight people in a pinch – a feature that has already proven invaluable with our large families. No more balancing plates precariously or feeling like we’re playing Tetris with our dinner guests!

Beyond its capacity for entertaining, this table perfectly accommodates my “spread-out-all-the-tear-sheets” propensities, making it an ideal surface for everything from meal prep to creative projects. Of course, we’re still on the hunt for the perfect dining chairs – these current ones are just temporary placeholders. However, even with interim seating, the upgrade is undeniable. The sheer luxury of having ample room for adult-sized plates and elbows is a daily delight. This table truly makes our eat-in kitchen feel like a proper dining area, fostering connection and comfort, and significantly enhancing the usability of our home’s busiest hub. It effortlessly transitions from a casual family breakfast spot to a vibrant gathering place for friends, showcasing its versatility and robust design.

Envisioning Our Dream Kitchen: The “After” Story

Now, I must ask for a moment of your imagination. Try to avert your eyes from certain elements of our current kitchen backdrop – the faux-brick vinyl flooring, the overwhelming amount of wood, and that rather “graph-tastic” wallpaper. Let’s just say this space is very much a work in progress! In fact, I’ve already stripped about half of the room, a saga I definitely owe you a detailed post about. This kitchen is slated for a complete transformation, and we’re envisioning a cohesive, inviting space where this beautiful table will truly shine. It’s exciting to see how one key piece can anchor an entire design vision, serving as the muse for the rest of the renovation.

The beauty of this table lies in its inherent character and its versatility to blend into various design aesthetics. Once our kitchen renovation is complete, this table will make a lot more sense “in context,” becoming the centerpiece of a refreshed and modern space that balances rustic charm with contemporary functionality. To give you a taste of what we’re aiming for, imagine it in a bright, airy setting, perhaps similar to this stunning BHG kitchen. Doesn’t that evoke a sense of warmth and sophisticated casualness, where family meals and lively conversations naturally unfold? We’re dreaming of crisp white cabinets, perhaps some open shelving, and new flooring that complements the table’s rich texture, creating a truly harmonious environment.

The Thrill of the Hunt: Uncovering a High-End Gem for Less

And now for the truly thrilling part of this story: where this magnificent piece originally hails from. Prepare yourselves, because you’ll never guess its true retail pedigree! I’ll give you a playful hint: it rhymes with “Festoration Blardware.” Yes, you heard that right! This substantial, stylish table is a product of none other than Restoration Hardware, a brand renowned for its timeless, high-quality, and often high-priced furniture. Their pieces are coveted for their robust construction and classic designs, making a purchase from them a significant investment for many homeowners.

But here’s the best part: we certainly didn’t pay the typical $1795 – $2495 price tag you’d find at Restoration Hardware for a table of this caliber. Our incredible find actually turned up at one of our absolute favorite local spots: The Decorating Outlet. This hidden gem is the outlet for Shades of Light, a fantastic resource where a treasure trove of returned merchandise, floor models, or items used once for catalog shoots end up. It’s truly an awesome place to score an unbeatable deal, and we’ve had tremendous luck there in the past – including the pendants in our last house’s kitchen and our old bedroom rug, which now happily resides in Clara’s room. These success stories are a testament to the power of patience and knowing where to look beyond conventional retail.

It turns out this magnificent 60-inch table, originally priced at a hefty $2095 at Restoration Hardware, had been used just a few times for some catalog photoshoots. After its moment in the spotlight, it sat in a storage room for a while before making its way to The Decorating Outlet. There, we stumbled upon it, priced at a cool $650 – an astounding 70% markdown! This kind of find is what makes furniture hunting so exhilarating. It’s a testament to patience and knowing where to look for quality pieces that won’t break the bank. Who says you can’t have luxury on a budget? Shopping at outlets and consignment stores can yield incredible results, allowing you to furnish your home with high-end pieces at a fraction of the cost, making dream decor accessible to savvy shoppers.

The Enduring Appeal of Reclaimed Wood: Character and Durability

Beyond the incredible price, the table itself is a masterpiece of design and craftsmanship. Its top is awesomely weathered, boasting a rich patina that tells a story of its past life. The entire piece is crafted from reclaimed wood, meaning no two tables are ever exactly alike. This commitment to using sustainable materials not only gives the table a unique character but also aligns with a more environmentally conscious approach to home decor. Every knot, every grain, and every imperfection contributes to its charm, making it a truly one-of-a-kind statement piece that brings warmth and history into our home.

As a mom, the durability of this reclaimed wood table is a huge selling point. I love that Clara and our little “bun” (our youngest child) can beat on this table until the cows come home, and all those inevitable dents, scratches, and marks will simply be filed under “character.” This philosophy is a stark contrast to my own childhood experience. Growing up, we had a shiny, lacquered table that was treated with extreme reverence – it was waaaay too precious. I still recall an especially intense spirographing incident where I accidentally scratched it, and I never lived to hear the end of it! The freedom to let life happen around this table is incredibly liberating; it’s a piece designed to be lived with, not just looked at.

Embracing Imperfection: The Joy of a Lived-In Home

It’s truly wonderful to know that now, I can spirograph my little heart out, or my kids can create their masterpieces, without the constant fear of marring a perfectly smooth, unblemished surface. This table invites creativity, spills, laughter, and all the beautiful chaos that comes with a vibrant family home. And really, isn’t that the very definition of happiness? A home should be a place where you can relax, be yourself, and live freely, without constantly worrying about damaging your possessions. This ethos reflects a growing trend towards creating spaces that are both beautiful and genuinely comfortable for everyday living.

This reclaimed wood piece perfectly embodies the trend towards a more relaxed, authentic aesthetic in home decor. It’s about celebrating the beauty of imperfection and the stories that objects accumulate over time. Rather than striving for pristine, showroom perfection, we’re embracing a look that feels warm, inviting, and genuinely lived-in. This table is not just furniture; it’s a foundation for countless family memories yet to be made, a silent witness to shared meals, homework sessions, crafting projects, and heartfelt conversations. It’s furniture that will age gracefully, only gaining more character with each passing year and every new memory forged around it.

An Heirloom in the Making: Quality That Lasts Generations

The fact that it’s such a well-made, solid piece fills us with immense joy and confidence. This table is crazy heavy – there’s nothing hollow or veneered about it. It’s a truly substantial piece of furniture, built to withstand the test of time and generations of family life. We are genuinely hoping it will become one of those cherished “hand-down-to-your-kids” pieces, a fixture in our family that outlives both John and me. Who knows, maybe in 2113, our great-great-grandkids will be happily spirographing their days away on its wonderfully weathered surface, adding new layers of character and memories. Sigh, the thought brings a smile to my face, envisioning a future where this table continues to be a central part of our family’s narrative.

Update: We’ve had a few questions about the fate of our dining table from our previous house. Rest assured, it’s still very much with us, now proudly residing in our formal dining room. The reason we didn’t contemplate bringing that into the eat-in kitchen area is purely practical: it’s around a foot wider (approximately 70 inches) and accompanied by larger, more substantial chairs. While perfect for the dedicated dining room, it would have been far too cramped and overwhelming for our eat-in kitchen space, disrupting the flow and diminishing its functionality. The 60-inch dimensions of our new table are absolutely ideal for the flow and functionality of this particular area, proving that sometimes, a slight difference in size can make all the difference in a room’s harmony.

Furnishing Our “Forever Home”: A Mindful Approach

This beautiful table marks only the second significant piece of furniture we’ve purchased since moving into our new home about four months ago. This seems to be our evolving pattern, reminiscent of when we moved into our second house and acquired our sectional and our dining table within a few months. Our approach to furnishing this “forever home” is a thoughtful one: we’re aiming to slowly acquire quality pieces that we truly love and that will stand the test of time. While we’ll always cherish the thrill of thrift store finds, the practicality of IKEA, and the satisfaction of building things ourselves, our goal here is to cultivate a beautiful mix of curated items that reflect our style and last for years to come, creating a home that feels both authentic and enduring.

Financially, between our new West Elm dresser and this incredible table score, we’ve actually spent $750 less than we did on those two initial, comparably sized purchases for our last house. However, since our sunroom makeover is projected to come in a bit higher than our previous patio project (which was the first big DIY undertaking we tackled four months into that house), we’re most likely going to end up right back on the same track with the ol’ bank balance. Isn’t it fascinating how these things seem to have a pattern, a delicate dance between saving and investing in our home, always striving for balance and smart choices?

All mathy comparisons aside, we’re genuinely psyched to have two such well-made, characterful furniture additions in our new home. The emphasis on quality and longevity is paramount as we build a home that feels truly ours. Each piece is chosen with intention, contributing to a cohesive and comforting aesthetic that will grow with us. Now, if only we could manage to get the chairs for this table right on the very first try! If our former dining room chair debacle is any indication, finding the perfect set might just be a long and winding road. But the journey of creating a home is precisely that – a journey, filled with discovery, decisions, and sometimes, a few delightful detours.

Still life with a lemon on the new reclaimed wood table

A Beautiful Foundation, Regardless of What’s Next

But for now, we’re focusing on the immense beauty and potential of our new table. It stands as a testament to smart shopping and the value of patiently waiting for the right piece. Even with our “shinnnny fake brick floors” still in place, the table itself is undeniably pretty, a solid anchor amidst the ongoing renovation chaos. Just focus on this charming still life with a lemon – don’t look down! The table holds its own, promising a beautiful future for our kitchen, a central gathering point for years of family life, laughter, and cherished moments yet to come.
