The findings, as you’ll discover, are surprisingly relatable and offer invaluable lessons for prospective and current homeowners alike. Beyond the walls of our homes, we explore a recent study comparing millennial dads to their baby boomer predecessors, particularly regarding DIY skills, sparking quite a spirited discussion and some strong opinions from our end. We also tackle a rather messy (and literal) predicament at our beach houses, sharing the unconventional, yet effective, solutions we’ve implemented. To broaden our horizons, we’re taking a virtual trip around the globe to explore unique design norms that challenge our everyday perceptions. Finally, as summer approaches, we’re wrapping things up with our top picks for entertainment, ensuring you stay inspired and engaged during our podcast’s brief hiatus.

What’s New: Tackling the Beach House Bird Problem
This week, we’re addressing a rather messy situation that recently unfolded at our beach duplex. While we won’t be showing you actual bird droppings (thankfully!), the accompanying photo offers a glimpse into the innocent-looking “bird city” nestled behind our duplex fence. What started as a few birds quickly escalated into a full-blown avian community, creating an astonishing amount of mess on the duplex patio, our outdoor furniture, and even directly on the exterior of the duplex itself. Our cleaning lady was genuinely surprised by the sheer volume of “stuff” accumulating on the windows and surfaces, making it clear this was a problem requiring immediate and creative intervention.

- To restore peace and cleanliness to our duplex backyard, we deployed a clever two-pronged strategy. First, we invested in these realistic decoy owls. Placed strategically, these formidable-looking deterrents mimicked the presence of natural predators, effectively discouraging the birds from congregating and, more importantly, from “doing their business” in our outdoor living spaces. We’re incredibly relieved by the swift and surprisingly effective resolution these simple decoys provided.

- Our second line of defense involved a pack of reflective bird deterrent discs. These shimmering discs, when hung from trees, create a visual disturbance that birds find disorienting and uncomfortable, encouraging them to find alternative resting spots. What’s more, they blend surprisingly well with the natural surroundings, proving that effective bird deterrence doesn’t have to sacrifice aesthetics. We were so impressed with their performance at the duplex that we extended their use to our pink beach house, where we had begun noticing similar “spotty” issues. These solutions highlight that sometimes the simplest, most visual deterrents are the most effective.

- Speaking of nature’s challenges, if you’re battling other persistent wildlife issues in your landscaping, you might find our previous discussions on deer prevention helpful. We shared our ongoing efforts and successful strategies for keeping deer from munching on our plants in Episode #99 and provided a comprehensive update in Episode #142. These episodes offer practical advice and product recommendations for protecting your garden and yard from unwanted visitors.
Game Time: Homeowner Hindsights – Unveiling Common Regrets
Every homeowner embarks on their journey with a vision, but often, hindsight reveals a different story. We delved into a revealing study about homeowner regrets, uncovering what features people wish they had considered differently. Understanding these common missteps can be incredibly empowering, helping you make more informed decisions when buying, renovating, or simply maintaining your home. The key takeaway is often about prioritizing long-term satisfaction over fleeting trends or initial impressions.
- For an in-depth look at the statistics and specific features homeowners regret, you can explore the full survey summary here. This resource provides valuable data that can guide your own home-related decisions, highlighting areas where others have experienced dissatisfaction. It’s a goldmine of information for anyone looking to avoid common pitfalls in homeownership.
- During our discussion, we spent a considerable amount of time extolling the virtues of hardwood floors, particularly their incredible ability to be refinished and revitalized. Sherry specifically highlighted how even severely old and damaged hardwoods can undergo a miraculous transformation, gleaming like new with the right care and expertise. This is a testament to the enduring quality and timeless appeal of hardwood flooring, making it an investment that truly pays off over decades. They not only add significant aesthetic value but also contribute to a home’s overall resale value and charm. The photos below showcase exactly this transformation, starting with the incredible refinishing work done on the duplex floors.

- Another stunning example is the restoration of our beach house floors, which boast over a century of history as heart pine. This image captures their condition before the refinishing process began – worn, dull, and carrying the marks of decades of life.

- And here are those very same floors, just a few days after undergoing a professional refinishing treatment! The transformation is truly remarkable, revealing the rich character and warmth that was hidden beneath years of use. This vividly demonstrates that with a bit of care, old floors can regain their former glory, becoming a stunning focal point in any home.

- If you’re contemplating a similar project, you might be curious about the practicalities of living through such a process. We shared our firsthand account of what it’s like living through having your floors refinished when we had our downstairs areas redone a few years ago. It’s an honest look at the temporary disruption and the incredible payoff, providing essential insights for anyone considering this worthwhile home improvement project.

Updates: Generational Trends and DIY Discussions
Our ongoing series of updates this week delves into fascinating generational shifts, from consumer products designed for specific demographics to surprising insights into modern DIY capabilities. These discussions often highlight the evolving nature of household norms and the playful (and sometimes serious) debates they spark.
- Following up on our lively discussion in Episode #143 about the Charmin Forever Roll, we found this Business Insider article that explains the marketing rationale behind this extra-long toilet paper roll, specifically targeting millennials. It’s a humorous yet insightful look into how brands adapt to perceived generational needs and preferences, often sparking more conversation than anticipated. Speaking of excited reactions, our friend was over the moon with his prize for correctly predicting the outcome of Game of Thrones – a testament to the fun and anticipation these cultural phenomena create!

- Continuing the theme of millennial trends, you can revisit our original, broader discussion on “things our generation is ‘killing'” in Episode #92. This episode explored various household staples and practices that millennials are reportedly abandoning, from traditional dishwashers to fabric softener, offering a lighthearted but thought-provoking perspective on shifting consumer habits and preferences.
- A particularly amusing and relatable trend we discussed was summarized in this Buzzfeed article, which highlighted how millennials are increasingly avoiding “scary weird” doorbells, preferring to simply text when they arrive at someone’s door. This cultural shift was also documented back in 2017 by a Wall Street Journal article, underscoring a broader preference for less confrontational and more digitally-mediated communication.
- This preference for indirect interaction resonated deeply, especially considering Sherry’s vivid description of reflexively hiding when our own doorbell rings. It’s clear that in an age of constant digital connection, the sudden, unannounced ring of a doorbell can feel unexpectedly intrusive.

- Perhaps the most contentious update this week was the bold claim from a NY Post article, stating that “Millennial Dads Have Pathetic DIY Skills Compared To Baby Boomers.” This headline-grabbing assertion was based on an Alarm.com survey and sparked a significant debate about generational differences in practical skills and home maintenance. While the survey’s methodology and conclusions can be debated, it certainly highlighted a perceived gap in traditional DIY capabilities.
- The statistic that truly astounded us from this report was the revelation that a surprising third of households reportedly don’t own fundamental tools like screwdrivers or a hammer. This isn’t just about DIY ambition; these are basic necessities for everyday home repairs. If you find yourself in this category, there’s an easy and affordable solution. Here’s a simple tool kit that provides these essentials for just $12, ready to equip you for basic household tasks. Sherry remains seriously disturbed by this finding, emphasizing the importance of having even a rudimentary set of tools for home preparedness.
Global Design Norms: Exploring Architectural Quirks and Modern Conveniences
Our segment on global design norms always offers a fresh perspective on how different cultures approach living spaces and functionality. This week, we explored everything from gravity-defying staircases to cutting-edge smart home delivery systems, showcasing the fascinating diversity in architectural and technological solutions around the world.

- Those images depict some of the dizzying sights I encountered when researching “Dutch Stairs,” as suggested by our listener Erin. (source for top image, source for bottom image). These famously steep and narrow staircases are a common feature in older Dutch homes, a clever space-saving solution in vertically challenged urban environments. They’re often so precipitous that they feel more like ladders than stairs, posing a genuine challenge for anyone not accustomed to their extreme incline. Merely looking at them can induce vertigo, so I can only imagine the daily climb! They stand as a testament to practical design dictated by historical space constraints, even if they’ve earned the nickname “death traps.”
- I also touched upon the innovative Amazon Key service, a modern marvel that transforms your garage into a secure smart delivery point. This system allows Amazon delivery personnel temporary, controlled access to your garage to safely leave packages, eliminating the worry of theft or weather damage. Equipped with a security camera, it offers both convenience and peace of mind for online shoppers. It represents a high-tech evolution of the in-house mail delivery norm once common in rural areas, like the one listener Allison described from Vermont. This contrast highlights how technology is continually reshaping traditional practices, offering new solutions for age-old needs in home security and logistics.
We’re Digging: Summer Entertainment Picks for Home & Beyond
As we head into our summer break, we’ve curated a fantastic list of podcasts, shows, and books to keep you inspired, entertained, and engaged. Whether you’re seeking design inspiration, captivating true crime, or an epic historical saga, our picks promise to keep you company until our next episode. These are the things that have genuinely captured our attention and we believe they’ll resonate with you too.
- First up is the brand new podcast from our incredibly talented friend, Sabrina Soto, titled “Redesigning Life with Sabrina Soto.” This week, we had the distinct pleasure of being interviewed on her show, sharing our own insights and experiences. Sabrina brings her signature warmth and design expertise to candid conversations about life, career, and, of course, home. You can find her show readily available on virtually any platform where you listen to podcasts, including your preferred app.
- If you’re keen to revisit Sabrina’s earlier appearances with us, she was our very first guest interview way back in Episode #2 of our podcast! In that memorable conversation, she was incredibly candid and open about the realities and nuances of filming a home makeover show, offering a unique behind-the-scenes look that was both enlightening and entertaining.
- Following that, in Episode #4, our second interview featured the wonderfully witty Orlando Soria. We’re thrilled to see his new show, Unspouse My House, making waves on HGTV. This series is an absolute breath of fresh air – funny, poignant, and full of his signature charm and design flair. The show’s intro alone (which honestly made me spit out my drink with laughter) perfectly encapsulates Orlando’s unique brand of humor and heart. We are so incredibly grateful that HGTV recognized and preserved the wonderful randomness and sheer hilarity that Orlando embodies, making his show a truly distinctive viewing experience.

- If you’re in the mood for a gripping narrative that blends investigative journalism with high-stakes corporate drama, we both highly recommend The Dropout from ABC News. This meticulously researched podcast unravels the captivating and cautionary tale of Elizabeth Holmes and the spectacular rise and fall of her fraudulent healthcare startup, Theranos. The story is a masterclass in deception, ambition, and the blinding allure of Silicon Valley hype. (Side note: I can’t hear “Theranos” without simultaneously thinking of a Thermos and the Avengers’ villain, Thanos – a fun little mental quirk!). Regardless, it was an absolutely riveting and unforgettable listen.
- Lastly, for those who love historical non-fiction, I was completely engrossed by the WWII survival story, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. This book, with over 25,000 five-star reviews and a remarkable four-year run on the NYTimes Bestseller list, chronicles the incredible true story of Louis Zamperini’s harrowing journey through war, resilience, and redemption. It’s not typically a genre I gravitate towards, but I was utterly captivated from start to finish. The depth of research and the powerful storytelling are phenomenal. I was so profoundly moved by it that I’m now seriously considering diving into the author’s other acclaimed work, Seabiscuit, about the legendary racehorse.
- And for those who have experienced the story through film, if you’ve seen the Unbroken movie adaptation, please let me know your thoughts. I often find that films struggle to capture the full essence and detail of a beloved book, and given how much I cherished the written version, I’m curious if the cinematic rendition measures up.
