How Mistakes, Setbacks, and Near-Lawsuits Fuel Success

Young House Love celebrated its tenth anniversary this fall, so we’re taking a moment to reflect on a decade of renovating homes, growing a business, and learning—often the hard way—while sharing it all on the internet. Over the years there were pivotal moments in both design and business that shaped where we are today. Some of those moments were thrilling; others felt awful at the time. Together they tell the story of how we got here.

Presentation Slides

  • Below are a few of the key slides from our recent presentation in Bristol, VA. The episode provides full context—essentially ten years condensed into thirty minutes—so be sure to listen for the full story.

Here’s a look back at our early site design. Blogging (and our coding skills) has evolved a lot over the past decade.

Early blog design

  • The slide below highlights paint color mistakes from our first house. We’ve written about expanding our color palette and offer tips for dealing with tricky gray undertones and choosing paint—check those posts for more detail and examples from our before-and-after tours.

Here’s a screenshot of our first month earning money with Google AdSense. It still makes us laugh—$10.59 bought a couple of paint brushes, and that felt like a win.

  • We also shared slides of early magazine features. Those moments were important exposure for us, and we’ve documented the shoots and behind-the-scenes stories on the blog.

  • Below is an early peek at producing our first book, Young House Love. Making a book was a huge milestone and taught us a lot about storytelling and process.

  • We shared glimpses of our second house during the talk. For a full tour, visit our House Tour page where each room and project is documented in detail.

  • We also talked about being featured on The Oprah Winfrey Network—another big moment for our blog. The slide with low color saturation led to the now-infamous “vampire” photo.

  • These slides show the evolution of our Young House Love lighting collection. We launched an initial line and later updated it; product examples from the collection were included in the presentation.

Happy Thanksgiving—thank you for being part of this journey. We also want to thank Modsy for sponsoring the episode; they reimagined a tricky angled bonus room into a calm master suite for us. And thanks to everyone who listened and supported the blog over the past ten years.

Thanks for listening, everyone!
