A Curious Aroma

Unleash Your Inner DIYer: Join the Seasonal Pinterest Challenge!

There’s an undeniable buzz in the air – a mix of fresh ideas, creative energy, and maybe just a hint of determination. If you’re sensing that familiar scent of possibility, it can only signify one thing: it’s time for another exciting round of the Pinterest Challenge! This isn’t a sponsored event by Pinterest or any other brand; it’s a brilliant concept dreamt up by the wonderful Katie Bower, designed to inspire us all to move beyond endless pinning and truly embark on our creative projects. So, let’s roll up our sleeves, embrace our crafting spirit, and dive into this challenge together. It’s the perfect opportunity to transform those inspiring images saved to our boards into tangible, beautiful realities for our homes and lives.

The journey began last June when Katie reached out with a fantastic idea: a seasonal challenge dedicated to bringing our pinned inspirations to life. We decided to call it, quite simply, The Pinterest Challenge. For many of us, our Pinterest boards are vast collections of dreams – thousands of gorgeous ideas for home decor, delicious recipes, clever DIYs, and stylish outfits. Yet, how many of those amazing pins ever make it off the screen and into our actual lives? For me, it was a shockingly low percentage! This challenge serves as a much-needed nudge, a welcome call to action that jolts us out of our pinning reverie and into the joyful realm of doing.

Our initial venture with our first Pinterest Challenge last summer was an absolute blast, filled with discovery and creative triumphs. The enthusiasm continued into our second installment in the fall, proving just how much fun and satisfaction can be found in turning virtual inspiration into real-world creations. Now, we’re absolutely thrilled to be back, perhaps a little belated, but certainly not forgotten, with the highly anticipated winter edition. After all, winter technically lingers for a few more weeks, making it the ideal time to huddle indoors and get those creative juices flowing. So, whether you’re a seasoned DIY pro or just starting your crafting adventure, grab your tools and let’s kick off this exciting creative party!

The Heart of the Challenge: Turning Inspiration into Creation

The beauty of the Pinterest Challenge lies in its simplicity and flexibility. The primary rule is straightforward: select something that has genuinely inspired you from your Pinterest boards and give it your own unique spin. We encourage participants to truly make the project their own, infusing it with personal style and adapting it to their needs. Equally important is the spirit of community and recognition; remember to link back to the original creator of the project that first sparked your imagination. This could be a renowned design company like Anthropologie, a fellow blogger whose creativity you admire, or any source that got your creative gears turning. It’s about celebrating the shared pool of inspiration that Pinterest provides while also acknowledging the talented individuals behind those brilliant ideas.

The scope of projects is wonderfully boundless. Your chosen DIY can be anything your heart desires: grand or modest, a striking piece of home decor, a practical sewing endeavor, a culinary masterpiece, or even something entirely unexpected! The challenge is designed to encourage exploration and push creative boundaries, regardless of your skill level or preferred craft. Our past projects perfectly illustrate this versatility. For our very first challenge, my husband John and I embarked on a significant undertaking, crafting a unique clothespin light fixture for our laundry room – a project that truly transformed the space and stretched our DIY capabilities. In contrast, for the subsequent challenge, I tackled a more intricate but smaller-scale project: creating 38 homemade holiday ornaments, each one a tiny labor of love that added a personal touch to our festive decorations. These examples highlight that the challenge isn’t about the size of the project, but the spirit of creation and the satisfaction of bringing a pinned idea to life.

Winter Edition: A Truce with the Sewing Machine

For this winter’s challenge, I’ve decided to tackle a long-standing personal mission: making peace with my sewing machine. Many of you might recall our rather “it’s complicated” relationship, which I’ve discussed here before. Despite our past disagreements, I believe it’s time for a truce, and what better way to broker it than with a fun, functional project? My goal is to create a homemade beanbag for our little one’s closet – a project I first mentioned over seven months ago. Clearly, it’s about stitchin’ time!

The idea of a custom beanbag has been percolating on my Pinterest boards for a while now. I’ve already pinned a ton of ideas, from sleek modern designs to cozy, oversized options. The biggest decisions ahead involve selecting the perfect shape and fabric – choices that will ultimately define the beanbag’s character and comfort. Will it be a structured cube, a classic pear shape, or something entirely unique? What kind of fabric will best suit its purpose and stand up to enthusiastic use? I’m hoping to avoid a lumpy, misshapen mess and instead create something truly special and inviting. This project isn’t just about the end result; it’s about embracing the process, learning new sewing techniques, and hopefully, fostering a more harmonious relationship with my machine. I’ll be back next week, fingers crossed, with all the juicy details and, most importantly, the completed beanbag ready for its grand debut. Stay tuned for the full reveal!

Meet Our Inspiring Guest Hosts

You’re probably wondering who else is joining Katie Bower (affectionately known as The Esteemed Bacon-Eating Pinterest Challenge Founder – and a well-deserved nominee for an Apartment Therapy Homie in not one, but two categories this year, woot!) and me on this creative adventure. Each season, we love to invite different talented individuals to “guest host” with us, bringing fresh perspectives and diverse skills to the challenge. For this winter edition, we’re absolutely thrilled to welcome two incredibly inspiring bloggers to our team:

  • Erin from The Great Indoors: Erin is a true force of creativity, and we’re so excited to have her back! During our Fall Pinterest Challenge, she whipped up a fun art project that not only captivated us but also firmly convinced us that she needed to team up with us again. Her knack for transforming simple ideas into captivating home decor is truly inspiring, and we can’t wait to see what brilliant project she unveils this time.
  • Cassie from Hi Sugarplum: Cassie’s style and inventive approach to DIY projects made her an instant favorite. In our last Pinterest Challenge, she fancied up a wreath with such elegance and charm that it instantly inspired us to ask her to climb aboard for this challenge. Her ability to elevate everyday items into something extraordinary is a testament to her creative vision, and we know she’ll bring fantastic energy to our group.

Your Invitation to Create: Join the Pinterest Challenge Community!

Now, this is the part where I humbly extend my arm (perhaps with a slightly crooked smile and a lingering fear of sewing still in my eyes, but brimming with excitement!) and genuinely invite you to join in on the fun! This challenge is for everyone who has ever scrolled through Pinterest and thought, “I could make that!” It’s your chance to pick one of those inspiring pins, interpret it in your own unique way, and finally bring it to life. Imagine the satisfaction of looking at a finished project and knowing you made it happen!

We’ve intentionally set aside this upcoming weekend, giving everyone (including ourselves!) ample time to dedicate to their chosen projects. This focused creative period allows for planning, gathering materials, and making significant progress on your DIY. Then, we’ll all reconvene next Wednesday morning, on the 14th, to proudly share our completed projects. We are eagerly anticipating this turning into the same kind of über fun, inspiring share-fest that we experienced during the summer and fall challenges. If you need a dose of inspiration, you can always check out all the amazing linked-up projects from previous rounds here and here. These past challenges are a testament to the incredible creativity and diverse talents within our community.

So, mark your calendars! Simply drop in next Wednesday morning to see what we – and our fantastic guest hosts – have created. Even better, come prepared to submit links to your own completed projects so we can all admire your hard work and be inspired by your unique interpretations. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow DIY enthusiasts, share tips, and celebrate each other’s accomplishments. Who knows, we might even find a few new things to pin from your amazing creations. And so, the delightful cycle of pinning, doing, and inspiring continues!

The Power of “Doing”: Beyond a Single Challenge

The Pinterest Challenge is more than just a seasonal event; it’s an invitation to cultivate a mindset of creation and accomplishment. It encourages us to look at our curated collections of inspiration not as static galleries, but as springboards for active engagement. Every project completed, no matter how big or small, builds confidence, hones skills, and adds a unique, personal touch to our environments. It’s about breaking down the barrier between aspiration and execution, fostering a habit of creativity that extends far beyond the duration of the challenge itself. We believe in the profound joy and satisfaction that comes from making something with your own hands, and this challenge is designed to help you experience that feeling.

So, whether you’re tackling a complex build or a simple craft, remember the core spirit of the Pinterest Challenge: to be inspired, to act, and to share. It’s about personal growth, community connection, and the sheer delight of bringing your creative visions to life. Let’s make this winter edition the most inspiring and productive one yet, transforming our homes and enriching our lives, one DIY project at a time.

Just a friendly reminder, for those joining us or catching up: despite our frequent mentions of “Pinterest” (not literally ten million times, but you get the idea!), this Pinterest Challenge is entirely our own initiative. It hasn’t been paid for, sponsored, or perked by Pinterest or any other entity. We’re simply a group of passionate individuals who adore eye-candy, thrive on creative challenges, and genuinely love a good pin-fest – sometimes while indulging in our favorite shows, be it a suspenseful series about a lovable serial killer or an epic saga of the zombie apocalypse!
