Transforming Our Bedroom: Unveiling the IKEA Edland Four-Poster Bed
Our bedroom journey recently took a significant leap forward with the arrival and assembly of our new centerpiece: the magnificent IKEA Edland four-poster bed. Affectionately nicknamed “Ed,” this striking bed frame, officially known as the IKEA Yttervåg four-poster bed (previously Edland), represents more than just a piece of furniture; it’s the foundation of our dream bedroom. If you caught our previous update, you might recall Ed in his pristine, unassembled state, a testament to the exciting possibilities awaiting us. We delved into the decision-making process for choosing this particular bed in a prior post, exploring the aesthetic appeal and practical considerations that led us to welcome Ed into our home.

Since that initial introduction, Ed has not only been meticulously assembled but has also proudly hosted us for a blissful night’s sleep. The transition from a mattress on the floor to a fully elevated and structured bed has been nothing short of transformative. A crucial element in Ed’s structural integrity, and a point often highlighted in IKEA’s “good to know” sections, is the Skorva steel support beam. This unassuming yet vital component ensures that Ed can effortlessly bear the substantial weight of our incredibly heavy mattress, along with the combined weight of two enthusiastic DIYers, our spirited chihuahua named Hamburger, and our adorable baby girl during her occasional morning visits for cuddles and snacks. For anyone considering an IKEA bed frame, the Skorva beam is not just a recommendation; it’s a non-negotiable must-have for long-term durability and support, preventing mattress sag and ensuring a stable sleep surface.
The DIY Assembly Adventure: A Solo Mission (Mostly)
Embarking on the construction of the Edland four-poster bed was an experience that, surprisingly, proved to be remarkably straightforward. While IKEA furniture is often associated with the need for a second pair of hands, I took on this project primarily as a solo endeavor. My wonderful partner was, understandably, preoccupied with baby duty, leaving me to navigate the world of Allen wrenches and cryptic diagrams alone. This solo mission, while challenging at times, also instilled a unique sense of accomplishment. My hands were entirely occupied with holding, aligning, and fastening during the assembly phase, which meant very few actual photographs were taken of the process itself. However, the vivid memories of the assembly, combined with the trusty IKEA instruction booklet, allow me to humorously re-enact a few imagined scenes.
For instance, there was the moment I might have dramatically hollered, “Honey, fetch me my screwdrivers!” – a plea that, in reality, was likely met with a loving glare and the gentle suggestion that I retrieve them myself, given her full-time engagement with Clara. The beauty of IKEA instructions is their universal clarity, often relying on visuals over verbose text, making them an adventurer’s map for furniture construction.

Then, imagine the scene where I might have taken my partially constructed bed frame on an epic magic carpet ride across the room, perhaps humming “A Whole New World” as we hypothetically soared through fluffy clouds of sawdust and anticipation. These playful mental detours made the methodical process of tightening bolts and connecting panels all the more enjoyable, transforming a simple assembly task into a memorable story.

And, of course, there was that perfectly whimsical moment when I called IKEA, fully expecting to place an order for their legendary Swedish meatballs, only to be gently informed that they don’t, in fact, operate a fleet of food delivery personnel. A minor disappointment, perhaps, but one that added to the charm of the entire IKEA experience – a world where furniture dreams come true, even if meatball delivery remains a distant fantasy. These humorous interjections, while fictional, capture the spirit of tackling a big DIY project, where unexpected moments of levity often accompany focused effort.

While these elaborate scenarios didn’t literally unfold, they certainly made for a more entertaining internal monologue than a step-by-step recitation of “then I inserted another screw.” So, with the tales of assembly complete, let’s fast forward to the triumphant “after” – the moment Ed finally stood tall and proud in our bedroom, ready to elevate our sleeping experience and redefine our space.
The Big Reveal: From Floor to Four-Poster
The transformation was instant and dramatic. While I largely handled the bed frame assembly, Sherry’s assistance was absolutely essential when it came to wrangling our incredibly heavy mattress onto the new frame. It was a Herculean task that nearly led to our demise, but the sheer euphoria of seeing it finally done made every strain and grunt worth it. The contrast with our previous “mattress-on-the-floor” setup, a look we’d been unintentionally rocking since moving in, was stark and incredibly satisfying. The Edland bed instantly brought a sense of structure, sophistication, and completion to the room.

The psychological shift of having a proper bed, rather than sleeping directly on the floor, cannot be overstated. It instantly made the room feel more intentional, more adult, and infinitely more comfortable. We had endured over two weeks of this makeshift sleeping arrangement, and Ed’s arrival marked the glorious end of that particular marathon. The relief and joy were palpable, solidifying Ed’s role as our pivotal starting point for the entire bedroom makeover.

Even though the bedroom is still a work in progress – a blank canvas awaiting its full artistic expression – we are undeniably thrilled to have Ed as the anchor. His presence alone has dramatically improved the comfort and aesthetic of the space, effectively ending our impromptu camping experience on the floor. It’s truly amazing how a single piece of furniture can so profoundly impact the feel of an entire room and our daily comfort.
Functionality Meets Style: Height, Pets, and Practical Considerations
One of the aspects we particularly adore about the Edland bed is the elevated sleeping position. After more than four years of sleeping closer to the ground with our previous Malm bed in our old house, the Edland offers a good foot or more in height. This not only creates a grander presence in the room but also provides ample under-bed storage potential, a valuable asset in any home. Despite the increased height, it remains perfectly comfortable for both Sherry (who is shorter) and myself (taller) to climb in and out of, striking a perfect balance between loftiness and accessibility. This thoughtful design ensures that the bed is both impressive and practical for daily use.

And for those concerned about our beloved canine companion, fear not! Our energetic chihuahua, Burger, can still effortlessly leap onto the bed. While we initially considered adding a bench at the foot of the bed as our DIY version of Doggie Steps, Burgmeister, with his surprisingly Rottweiler-like agility, has proven he doesn’t need it. He prefers to demonstrate his athletic prowess with flying leaps, ensuring his rightful place at the foot of the bed without any special aids. This adaptability of the bed, accommodating both human comfort and pet access, speaks to its versatile design.
Another pleasant surprise, often a concern with taller four-poster beds, was the ceiling clearance. Despite its imposing height, Ed still leaves sufficient room for our existing ceiling fan to operate comfortably. While we eventually plan to replace the fan with a more aesthetically harmonious light fixture, it’s reassuring to know we can use it if needed, especially during those inexplicable mid-winter heatwaves or, more practically, to help ventilate the room after future painting projects and speed up drying times. This little “fan facilitating pocket of space” turned out to be a serendipitous design win.

Our Vision for the Future: Completing the Bedroom Sanctuary
Speaking of painting, our next significant step in transforming the bedroom will undoubtedly be to infuse some much-needed color onto the walls. We’re envisioning a sophisticated gray-ish blue hue, carefully chosen with subtle green undertones, to perfectly complement the overarching “teal vision” we meticulously crafted in our mood board from earlier days. This carefully selected palette will serve to make our pristine white Edland bed frame truly pop, creating a striking focal point against a beautifully nuanced backdrop. The intention is to create a calming yet vibrant sanctuary, a perfect retreat after a long day.
Beyond the walls, our design plans extend to the bedding. A new duvet is high on our priority list, not merely for a stylistic refresh, but also for practical reasons. A slightly larger duvet will offer better coverage over the sides of the bed, hopefully mitigating those ever-present “sleep fights” over who has more of the covers – a small but significant upgrade to our nightly peace. Our beloved existing West Elm duvet, currently gracing Ed, will happily find a new home in the guest room once we procure a full-sized bed for that space. This is a strategic move, as we’ve always felt our full/queen-sized duvet was ideally suited for a true full-sized bed, which aligns perfectly with our plans for the guest quarters. Slowly but surely, each element of our home is falling into place, contributing to a cohesive and comforting aesthetic.
The journey of transforming our bedroom with the IKEA Edland four-poster bed is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and DIY dedication. Ed has not only provided us with a comfortable and stylish sleeping solution but has also ignited our creative spirits, pushing us forward in crafting the bedroom sanctuary we’ve long envisioned. We are beyond excited for the next steps and look forward to sharing our progress as our dream bedroom continues to unfold.
