Welcome to our latest home transformation journey, where we tackle window treatments with a blend of creativity, practicality, and a touch of DIY magic! This project, masterminded and meticulously executed by Sherry, showcases how custom curtains can dramatically elevate a room’s aesthetic without requiring extensive sewing skills. While I primarily served as the baby-watcher and blog comment approver, I had a front-row seat to the impressive process of creating these stunning, no-sew drapes that promise to inspire your next home decor adventure. From selecting the perfect fabric to mastering the art of the iron-on hem, we’re excited to share every detail of how we brought our vision to life for our bedroom windows and even a clever closet solution.
DIY Curtains: Crafting Custom Window Treatments with Ease
Transforming a room often starts with the windows. They are focal points that offer immense potential for adding personality, warmth, and style. For this project, our goal was to create custom curtains that not only provided privacy and light control but also seamlessly integrated with our evolving bedroom decor. We opted for a DIY approach, leveraging Sherry’s exceptional eye for design and her knack for efficient, no-sew solutions. The result? Curtains that look professionally made, yet were crafted entirely by us, proving that beautiful home decor is well within reach for any DIY enthusiast.
The Foundation: Fabric Selection & Precision Cutting
The journey began with selecting the perfect fabric. After an extensive hunt that involved exploring numerous options and bringing home countless swatches (you can read more about our fabric search here), we finally settled on a beautiful yellowy-green fabric priced at $8.49 per yard during a sale. This choice wasn’t arbitrary; we envisioned a color that would complement our bedding without being an exact match, adding a subtle layer of sophistication and warmth to the room. We purchased 12.5 yards, meticulously calculating the necessary yardage to create panels for two bedroom windows and one closet opening.
Cutting the Panels with Precision
With the fabric in hand, the next crucial step was cutting it into perfectly sized panels. Precision is paramount here to ensure a polished, professional look. Luckily, our 8-foot-long living room rug proved to be an invaluable guide for keeping our cuts perfectly straight and our corners square. Sherry laid a tape measure alongside the rug, allowing her to easily cut five 90-inch long panels without breaking a sweat. Each panel was cut to its full bolt width, which was approximately 61 inches. This generous width ensures that when drawn, two panels can comfortably cover each of our 39-inch windows, providing ample fullness without appearing stretched or taut. Within a mere fifteen minutes, all five 90″ x 61″ panels (two for each window and one for the closet) were precisely cut. We were pleased to discover how accurately we had estimated our fabric needs, with only a small remnant remaining, preventing any unnecessary expenditure.

The efficiency of the cutting process was a testament to careful planning and the utility of simple household tools. This leftover piece confirmed our calculations were spot on – a relief, as no one wants to pay for more yardage than absolutely necessary. It’s a small detail, but knowing we minimized waste felt like a mini-victory in our DIY journey.

Mastering the No-Sew Hem: A Seamless Solution for Beautiful Curtains
After the cutting, the real work (and Sherry’s specialty) began: hemming. For those who shy away from sewing machines, or simply want a quicker, cleaner method, no-sew hem tape is a game-changer. Sherry utilized her tried-and-true trick: heavy-duty iron-on hem tape. This method is incredibly versatile and produces a professional-looking finish without a single stitch. If you’re interested in a more comprehensive guide on DIY curtains and the magic of no-sew hem tape, you can find detailed instructions and insights here. For visual learners, we’ve even created a video tutorial here, and additional in-depth pictures of the process are available here. The basic steps are straightforward: iron the fabric, apply the tape, peel the backing, fold the hem, and iron again to seal. Repeat for all edges, and voilà! You have beautifully hemmed panels ready for hanging.

While the process itself is simple, hemming all four edges of five panels is undoubtedly a time-consuming task. Sherry’s playful (and increasingly weary) shouts of “1 down, 19 to go” soon became “3 down, 17 to go,” signifying the repetitive nature of the work. However, the effort is undeniably worth it for the crisp, finished edge it provides. Meanwhile, Clara and I did our part by providing morale support, approving blog comments, and enjoying snacks in the kitchen while Sherry diligently ironed away. A rare glimpse into the DIY action: Sherry with her hair down, focused and determined!

Hanging High & Wide: Elevating Your Window Treatments
Once the tedious but essential hemming was complete, we moved on to the more exciting part: installation. This involved clipping the curtain rings to each panel and hanging the three curtain rods – a process we detailed in a previous post (this post of yore). And now, for the reveal of the finished product!

Please pardon the ongoing evolution of the room; the dresser, fan, and lack of wall art are all part of our continuous work-in-progress. We believe in taking our time to perfect each space, one detail at a time.

We are absolutely thrilled with how our DIY curtains turned out. A key design principle we consistently apply, and one that makes a significant visual impact, is hanging curtains “high and wide.” This means installing the rod several inches above the window frame and extending it beyond the frame on either side. This technique instantly creates the illusion of taller, wider windows and a more expansive, grander room. It gives the entire window treatment a commanding presence and an elevated aesthetic. We even had a reader tell us she dreamed Sherry was advocating for hanging curtains “high & wide”—a testament to how impactful this simple trick can be! Who needs a bumper sticker for such an iconic design tip?
Achieving the Perfect Length: To Pool or To Graze?

Another crucial decision in curtain hanging is determining the ideal length. While sometimes we appreciate the luxurious look of curtains that “pool” slightly on the floor, for this project, we opted for a crisp, modern aesthetic where the panels barely graze the floorboards. This choice enhances the clean lines of the room and creates a beautiful, subtle loopy draping effect. Our best tip for achieving the perfect length and placement is to clip your panels onto the rod first, then maneuver the rod on the wall, raising and lowering it by hand. This allows you to visually assess the height until you find that sweet spot where the curtains either graze the floor or pool to your heart’s content. Only then should you mark your curtain bracket placements and install them permanently. This method prevents the frustration of hanging rods only to find your curtains look awkward or too short, ensuring a flawless finish every time.

Beyond Windows: A Stylish Closet Solution
Our DIY curtain project extended beyond just windows. We also hung one of the fabric panels inside our closet, transforming it into a less intrusive and more aesthetically pleasing alternative to the clunky bi-fold door that previously occupied the space. Most of the time, this curtain will remain pulled to the side, offering easy access and an open, airy feel to the closet area.

However, the beauty of this solution lies in its versatility. Should we ever need to quickly conceal a bit of clutter, or require a moment of privacy for a quick change when guests are over, we can simply pull it closed. This creates a charming mini-dressing room effect within the closet, complete with its own light! Sherry particularly enjoys picturing Clara, when she’s older and her amazing imagination fully blossoms, putting on puppet shows or stage performances from within this cozy, private nook.

Installation Details for the Closet Curtain
For the closet curtain, strategic rod placement was key. We installed the rod high enough so that it remains discreetly hidden from view when standing outside the closet. Crucially, we also extended it wide enough to allow the curtain to be fully closed for complete privacy or fully opened so it doesn’t obstruct entry or exit. This thoughtful placement offers the best of both worlds: functional privacy when needed, and an open, accessible space otherwise, all while adding a soft, decorative element to an often-overlooked area of the room.

Selecting the Right Hardware: Rods & Ring Clips
Our choice of curtain hardware played a significant role in achieving the desired aesthetic. We sourced our oil-rubbed bronze curtain rods and accompanying ring clips from Target (or “Tar-hay,” as we affectionately call it) at an incredibly affordable price. Thanks to a few sales in the curtain aisle and our trusty Target card discount, we managed to purchase all three rods and five packs of ring clips for around $40. This budget-friendly find proves that stylish home decor doesn’t have to break the bank.
Ring clips are a particular favorite for several reasons. They simplify the curtain-making process immensely, eliminating the need for grommets, sleeves, or complex pleated details. This means you can literally transform anything from bedsheets to tablecloths into curtains with minimal effort, or simply hem four sides of fabric, as we did. Beyond their ease of use, ring clips offer a fantastic safety feature, especially in a home with curious little ones. Should Clara decide to emulate a monkey and swing from the curtains, the clips are designed to release the fabric, allowing it to fall harmlessly to the floor while the rod and rings remain securely in place. It’s a smart, practical feature that combines safety with good looks.
As for the finish, Sherry has a strong preference for oil-rubbed bronze rods, even for a nursery. She charmingly describes them as “like eyeliner for the window,” a sentiment I heartily agree with. This rich, dark finish beautifully complements the deep wood furnishings we gravitate towards, along with our selection of white accents and painted pieces, adding a touch of sophisticated contrast. Again, I find myself pondering why I’m the one writing this post when makeup references and hemming expertise are clearly not my forte!
Harmonizing Hues: Integrating Curtains into Your Room’s Palette
Beyond their practical function and the added height and softness they bring, we are absolutely delighted with the chosen color of our curtain panels. Those three days of intense fabric hunting were undoubtedly worth every moment. The unique yellowy-green tone achieves precisely what we envisioned: it beautifully highlights the golden-green hues in our bedding without being an exact match. Sherry has a humorous saying, “Matchy-Matchy, Tackly-Tacky,” which she developed while playfully imitating her sweet Italian mom, and it perfectly encapsulates our approach to color coordination. We purposefully leaned a bit greener (rather than browner or yellower) than the bedding. This choice creates a lovely, fresh contrast against the Carolina Inn Club Aqua wall color (a joke you can understand here), while still maintaining a cohesive relationship with the duvet’s palette.

The curtain color also harmonizes wonderfully with the new pillows we recently added to the bed. Between the curtains, the pillows, and the bedding, we feel we’ve successfully injected a sufficient amount of that vibrant golden-green into the room. This solid foundation now allows us to confidently begin layering in other colors and textures—perhaps eggplant, navy, charcoal, or an inky blue—to add further dimension and visual interest. The possibilities are exciting, and the fun has truly just begun! Of course, please overlook the absence of nightstands and bedside lamps; they are next on our ever-growing to-do list.

Our Bedroom’s Journey: A Seven-Week Transformation
While there are still many elements we plan to address in this room, and we’re enjoying taking our time with each step, it’s truly remarkable to reflect on how far this space has come in just the past seven weeks. Looking back at a picture of this bedroom taken right after we moved in, it’s almost unrecognizable. The transformation, largely spurred by thoughtful DIY projects like these curtains, speaks volumes about the power of vision and effort in creating a personalized and inviting home.

Behind the Scenes: A Chihuahua’s Approval
Finally, for a little “behind the scenes” amusement, we thought you might appreciate a glimpse into the realities of shooting home decor photos. Sometimes, our creative process involves navigating around a sleepy chihuahua who firmly refuses to vacate his cozy bed. Burger, our resident diva, doesn’t mind in the slightest when I simply make the bed right over him. In fact, our new, fluffier duvet makes him nearly invisible! Yes, our tiny furry supervisor was comfortably hidden in bed throughout the entire photo session for these “after” shots, a truly integrated part of our home renovation journey.

Conclusion: Our Curtain Fever Continues!
And so concludes this extensive discourse on our latest DIY curtain project. The entire process, though lengthy at times, has ignited a serious case of “curtain fever” in our household. Sherry affectionately diagnoses it whenever we pass a fabric store, and she presses her nose against the car window, exclaiming, “I’ll never let go!” in her most dramatic Rose-from-Titanic impression. We’ve realized that numerous other rooms in our home could greatly benefit from custom window treatments, and we are determined to explore bold and patterned textiles to inject even more character and interest into our spaces. While we appreciate the simplicity of white Ikea curtains, we’re ready to embrace more adventurous designs and take some creative risks. So, don’t be surprised to find us sharing more of our fabric store escapades and DIY curtain adventures soon. After all, a guy can only endure so many Rose-from-Titanic impressions before having to pull over just to make them stop!
