We’re thrilled to share an in-depth look at our ambitious home renovation plans, providing a comprehensive overview of the transformative layout changes and the carefully considered color palettes we’re envisioning. For those who have been eagerly requesting more details, this “brain dump” offers a detailed glimpse into the ideas currently taking shape in our minds – ideas that are sure to evolve as this exciting journey unfolds. Prepare for a rich discussion, complete with descriptive insights, architectural diagrams, and inspiring links that capture the essence of our future home. We invite you to buckle up for an engaging read as we unveil the foundation of our dream living spaces.
Our renovation journey begins with the first floor, which initially presented a layout typical of its era. Upon acquiring the property, the space featured a somewhat compartmentalized design, particularly around the kitchen area. Notably, three sets of double doors branched off the kitchen, creating a more closed-off feel and interrupting the natural flow between key living spaces. This initial configuration, while functional, lacked the open and expansive atmosphere we desired for modern living and entertaining. Below, you’ll find an illustration of the first floor’s original footprint:

Our vision for the first floor is centered around enhancing spatial connectivity, optimizing functionality, and infusing a sense of contemporary elegance. We aim to create an open-concept living environment that seamlessly integrates the kitchen, dining, and living areas, fostering a more communal and inviting atmosphere. Over time, these thoughtful modifications will redefine how we interact with and move through our home. Here’s a detailed look at the proposed first-floor transformation:

- Enhanced Flow Between Kitchen and Dining Room: Our primary goal is to significantly widen the existing doorway that connects the kitchen and the dining room. This architectural adjustment is crucial for improving the flow between these two essential spaces, making meal preparation and entertaining far more fluid. A wider opening will not only facilitate easier movement but also create a more visually expansive and cohesive dining experience, allowing conversations to effortlessly extend from one room to the next.
- Creating a Grand Connection to the Living Room: We plan to establish a wide, centrally positioned doorway between the kitchen and the living room. This grand opening will be flanked by custom built-in cabinetry, designed to provide both aesthetic appeal and invaluable storage. Much like the elegant opening between the office and dining room in our previous home, this feature will define the transition while offering display opportunities and practical storage solutions, turning a mere passageway into a statement of design and utility.
- Modernizing the Kitchen with an Island: The existing U-shaped kitchen with a peninsula will undergo a dramatic transformation into a more efficient and social L-shaped layout, complete with a central island. This strategic change will maximize counter space, enhance the kitchen’s workflow, and provide a versatile hub for cooking, casual dining, and social gatherings. Furthermore, we intend to add exquisite French doors to the eat-in kitchen area, leading directly to the deck. These doors will not only flood the space with natural light but also create a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience, perfect for alfresco dining and enjoying the garden views.
- Transforming the Sunroom into an Open Covered Porch: While not explicitly visible in the floor plan diagram, a significant exterior renovation involves converting the current sunroom into a charming open covered porch. This decision stems from the deteriorated condition of many of the existing sliders and rotten support posts. Our vision is to replace the enclosed structure with an inviting outdoor space, featuring elegant new columns and an open design. We envision a space reminiscent of beautiful outdoor living areas, offering a serene spot for relaxation and entertaining, perfectly integrating with the home’s exterior aesthetic. This transformation will blend indoor comfort with the tranquility of outdoor living.
Moving upstairs, the second floor currently serves as a collection of private retreats, but also holds immense potential for optimization and luxury. The existing layout, while functional, presents opportunities for thoughtful redesigns that will enhance comfort, privacy, and overall usability for our family. Here’s a snapshot of the second floor’s current configuration:

Our aspirations for the second floor involve refining the private quarters to maximize both luxury and practicality. The proposed changes aim to create more cohesive and spa-like bathroom facilities, introduce clever storage solutions, and unlock the full potential of previously underutilized spaces. The transformation will elevate the comfort and functionality of this personal sanctuary. Below, you’ll find our envisioned second-floor layout:

- Creating a Luxurious Master Bathroom: The most significant layout change on the second floor involves opening up the existing sink nook and the main bathroom area within our bedroom suite. Currently, two single sinks are separated by a wall, creating a somewhat fragmented space. Our plan is to dismantle this dividing wall, unifying the areas to create one expansive, integrated master bathroom. This will result in a more luxurious and spacious retreat, enhancing the daily experience and contributing to a spa-like ambiance within our private quarters.
- Innovative Hallway Built-in Nook: In the hallway nestled between the nursery and our bedroom, there is currently a double-doored linen closet. We envision transforming this functional but plain closet into an elegant built-in nook. Inspired by sophisticated hallway storage solutions, this space will feature concealed cabinetry on the bottom for practical storage and beautifully designed open shelves on top. This conversion will not only provide aesthetically pleasing display opportunities but also add architectural character and highly accessible storage, enhancing the hallway’s utility and visual appeal.
- Rethinking the Laundry Nook Enclosure: You might notice a proposed door at the end of the hallway where the laundry nook resides. We briefly entertained the idea of enclosing this space to create a legitimate, self-contained laundry room. However, after careful consideration, we concluded that adding a door would likely make the area feel more enclosed and potentially disrupt the natural flow, especially once we complete the adjacent unfinished storage area. We also anticipate it feeling somewhat awkward to navigate through one room to access another in the future. For now, we remain unconvinced about enclosing it and plan to maintain its open configuration, prioritizing spaciousness and ease of access.
- Future Bunkroom/Movie Room: A long-term aspiration involves drywalling the currently unfinished storage space on this floor. This area holds immense potential to be transformed into a versatile bunkroom or a dedicated movie room. We believe such a space would be incredibly beneficial, especially as our children grow older, offering a fantastic hangout spot for them and their friends, or even serving as a comfortable guest room. This future project promises to add significant value and entertainment functionality to our home.
Beyond structural changes, defining the home’s aesthetic through color is a paramount step. We’ve curated a thoughtful palette of Benjamin Moore swatches that truly resonate with our design sensibilities. It’s important to note that not all these selections are intended for wall colors; some might grace a bathroom vanity, a distinctive piece of furniture, an unexpected ceiling accent, or even the subtle back wall of Clara’s play-closet. This initial paint palette is merely a starting point—a first thought. We anticipate complementing these tones with accessories, art, and fabrics featuring a wider spectrum of hues, and we fully expect the palette to beautifully evolve as our design process progresses.

We envision using dramatic, sophisticated shades like Benjamin Moore’s Knoxville Gray or Black Pepper to create striking dining room environments, beautifully contrasted with crisp white trim and built-ins for a truly elegant statement. In contrast, many of the lighter neutrals within our selection are ideal for fostering bright, airy, and serene atmospheres in living areas and bathrooms, providing a versatile backdrop for varying decor styles. For bedrooms, we’re drawn to deeper mid-tones such as Sea Star or Sparrow, aiming to create cozy and tranquil retreats. These colors would pair exquisitely with an abundance of white furniture and linens, achieving a harmonious balance of depth and lightness. The vibrant pops of color, including Moroccan Spice, Milano Red, and Spotswood Teal, are reserved strictly for thoughtful accents—perhaps on a statement piece of furniture, a custom bathroom vanity, or even a decorative mirror frame. These cheerful hues will introduce personality and energy into predominantly white or neutral painted rooms, ensuring a sophisticated yet lively aesthetic without overwhelming the space.
It’s fascinating to observe how this emerging palette contrasts and converges with the color schemes of our previous homes. Our first house embraced a notably traditional and subdued aesthetic, characterized almost entirely by a serene blend of tan, cream, and soft blue-gray tones. This palette exuded a timeless, calming sensibility that laid a strong foundation for our design journey.

Our second house introduced a greater sense of adventure and boldness into our color choices. This home featured more vibrant elements, including striking deep teal walls, balanced by softer, contemporary shades of gray, subtle pink, and warm taupe. This palette represented a step towards more expressive and modern interior design, showcasing our evolving tastes.

We believe this current palette beautifully synthesizes the best elements from our past residences. It strikes a harmonious balance, feeling more traditional and warmer than the palette of our second house, while simultaneously capturing the neutral and classic elegance reminiscent of our first home. Yet, it’s infused with delightful bursts of color that bring a fresh, joyful energy. We are particularly excited by the blend of soft neutrals, rich moody hues, and welcoming accent colors like red and coral. This mix creates a sophisticated interplay between warm tones—such as tan, coral, red, and brown—and the cool tones we’ve always adored, including various shades of blue, green, and gray. To ground this dynamic palette and ensure a consistently refined aesthetic, we will incorporate classic white trim and doors, rich mocha hardwood floors, and elegant gray slate flooring. These foundational elements will temper the vibrant hues and maintain a timeless, classy ambiance throughout our home.
To encapsulate the overall “vibe” we’re striving for in this house, we’ve gathered a collection of inspirational images that perfectly align with our vision. These visual cues serve as our mood board, guiding our aesthetic choices and reinforcing the atmosphere we aim to create:
- A dark, tailored bedroom, evoking a sense of calm sophistication and intimate luxury, much like this elegant example, could be a perfect sanctuary.
- We are incredibly eager to transform the living room by whitewashing the existing brick fireplace, a technique that will brighten the space while retaining its charming texture and character. We envision a result similar to this inspiring image.
- Our dream kitchen embodies an airy and open aesthetic, drawing inspiration from spaces like this. We especially anticipate achieving this bright and spacious feel once our future French doors and integrated built-ins are in place, maximizing natural light and seamless transitions.
- Imagine a dining room with a dramatic, dark wall color, such as a deep navy, beautifully contrasted by crisp, bright white built-ins. This sophisticated interplay of light and dark, reminiscent of this stunning design, promises a truly captivating and memorable space.
- To introduce an element of unexpected charm and personality, we’re considering a chic wallpaper design in a smaller space, perhaps the downstairs half bath. A pattern like this could add an incredible touch of style and individuality.
- For our home office, we’re drawn to a functional yet stylish design, featuring a prominent wall of custom built-ins and a sleek floating table. This setup, echoing the efficiency and elegance of this office concept, would be ideal for meetings and focused work.
- Looking ahead, we envision transforming the unfinished storage space into a wonderfully cozy TV room and a practical bunk-room, much like this inviting example. This multi-functional space will be perfect for family movie nights and accommodating older children and their friends.
- While perhaps a “pipe dream” for now, the thought of a custom closet brimming with beautifully designed built-ins, offering unparalleled organization and luxury, is truly inspiring. A space like this would be the ultimate in functional elegance.
- Finally, we’re considering an intriguing combination of wallpaper and wainscoting for areas like the foyer or the upstairs hallway. This classic yet contemporary look, similar to this example, would add rich architectural detail and visual interest to these transitional spaces.

This entire endeavor is a significant undertaking, and we’re currently focused on the initial steps of refreshing the house, moving beyond its current blue trim and wallpapered state. Consequently, many of these more extensive room transformations and large-scale structural changes are undoubtedly further down the pipeline. Major construction projects and significant furniture or fabric purchases will require diligent saving, meaning these larger aspirations will be carefully phased in, interspersed with more immediate and cost-effective updates over the next few years. Nevertheless, we are incredibly excited to embark on this journey and witness how these initial predictions evolve and ultimately manifest. We look forward to revisiting this post in the future, reflecting on how closely – or perhaps how delightfully differently – our early visions compare to the final outcome.
