Embarking on a home renovation journey, especially one that tackles the often-neglected basement, can be incredibly rewarding. We recently transformed our previously damp and uninviting basement – once affectionately referred to as a “bug graveyard” – into a beautifully functional and dry space, thanks in large part to the fantastic support from the generous folks at True Value. Their expertise and supplies were instrumental in the crucial waterproofing and preparation phases, setting the perfect foundation for what was to become a truly versatile storage area. You can delve deeper into the initial groundwork and waterproofing process that turned this former eyesore into a clean slate by reading our detailed accounts here and here. With the foundational work meticulously completed, our sights were firmly set on furnishing and organizing this newfound potential within our home.
Our vision for the basement was clear: to create a highly functional space that not only maximized storage but also offered a dedicated workstation, all while maintaining a clean, cohesive, and budget-friendly aesthetic. A recent inspiring road trip to our local Ikea store proved incredibly productive. We returned home with virtually every essential item we had carefully selected and outlined in our preliminary mood board, which we enthusiastically shared with you just last week. This detailed planning allowed us to make precise choices, ensuring each piece would contribute to the overall functionality and style we aimed for in our renovated basement.
Our IKEA-Inspired Basement Design & Shopping List
The mood board served as our guiding star, ensuring every purchase aligned with our overarching design goals. Here’s a glimpse of the key pieces that became the backbone of our basement’s new look, focusing on maximizing utility and aesthetic appeal:

- Expedit Shelf (part of the Expedit Workstation) – $120: This versatile shelving unit was a non-negotiable for its exceptional storage capacity and modular design. Integrated into a workstation setup, it provides both open shelving for accessible items and a sturdy foundation for our desk area, perfectly balancing utility and display within our newly organized basement.
- Torsby Table (already owned) – Free: Resourcefulness is key in any DIY project. We repurposed our existing Torsby table, which seamlessly fits into the modern aesthetic we were aiming for. Its sleek design and durable surface make it an ideal complement to the workstation, serving as extra workspace or a craft area without additional cost, exemplifying smart budgeting.
- Woven Basket or Two – $17 each: To add warmth, texture, and most importantly, concealed storage, we opted for a couple of woven baskets. These are perfect for stashing away odds and ends, keeping the space tidy and visually appealing, while contributing to a cozy, organized atmosphere in our basement renovation.
- Two Aneboda Wardrobes – $100 a pop: These spacious wardrobes are absolute game-changers for large-scale storage. Their clean lines and ample interior space allow us to hide away a significant amount of items, from seasonal clothing to bulky sporting equipment, transforming clutter into calm and offering essential basement storage solutions.
- A Few White Storage Boxes – $12 for two: Essential for internal organization, these white boxes offer a uniform look, perfect for grouping smaller items within shelves or wardrobes. Their neutral color helps maintain a sense of calm and order, crucial for a truly functional and appealing storage area.
- A Few Green Storage Boxes – $12 for two: To introduce a subtle pop of color and visual interest without overwhelming the minimalist design, we incorporated a few green storage boxes. These are not just practical; they add a touch of personality and vibrancy to the overall scheme, making the basement feel more inviting.
- Expedit Desk (included in the Expedit Workstation) – Cost accounted for above: The integrated desk unit of the Expedit Workstation creates a dedicated area for projects, hobbies, or even a home office setup. It’s the cornerstone of our functional zone, providing ample surface area without compromising on storage beneath, making it ideal for a DIY workspace.
With these carefully selected pieces, the vision for the room has truly begun to materialize. The transformation is particularly evident thanks to the detailed floor plan we meticulously brainstormed beforehand. This crucial step allowed us to visualize precisely where each item would best fit, ensuring optimal functionality and flow within the space. More importantly, it helped us identify which furnishings would deliver the most impact and utility without exceeding our allocated budget, proving that thoughtful planning is paramount in achieving renovation success, especially in a basement makeover.
Strategic Space Planning: The Blueprint for Success in Basement Design
Our preliminary floor plan was more than just a sketch; it was a strategic blueprint that guided every decision, minimizing trial and error and maximizing efficiency. By mapping out furniture placement, walking paths, and storage zones, we ensured that the basement would be both aesthetically pleasing and incredibly practical for everyday use. This foresight prevented costly mistakes and ensured that even the most challenging aspects of the basement layout, such as irregular walls or utility access points, were addressed in our design. The result is a coherent and intuitive layout that feels much larger and more organized than its original state, a testament to effective DIY basement planning.

While the initial furnishing has made a dramatic impact, our DIY journey in the basement is far from over. A comprehensive list of upcoming projects still awaits our attention, including designing and installing a new, more appropriate light fixture to brighten the space, expertly rewrapping the water heater for a cleaner look, and constructing a custom screen to ingeniously conceal that now rewrapped but still somewhat unsightly water heater. Furthermore, addressing the outdated windows, tackling a DIY dehumidifier solution, and many other smaller tasks are on our agenda to truly perfect this basement. These projects, while requiring additional effort, are essential for elevating the basement from merely functional to truly finished and inviting, transforming it into a complete and integrated part of our home.
A Glimpse into the Transformed Basement: Before & After Renovation
Despite the remaining tasks, the progress is undeniable. The addition of two spacious Ikea Aneboda Wardrobes, coupled with the functional Expedit Workstation, has fundamentally altered the room’s character. Inexpensive yet impactful accessories, such as a few vibrant faux plants, inject a much-needed touch of greenery and life into the space, softening the industrial feel of the basement. Complementing these are various storage boxes, offering even more concealed stashing space, essential for maintaining a clutter-free environment and maximizing storage. We’ve also integrated pieces we already owned, including the elegant Torsby table and a few extra wooden chairs, which further enhance the basement’s utility without incurring extra costs. As planned, our bikes now have a dedicated spot, but we have even more exciting plans in store for sprucing up that back wall, so be sure to stay tuned for future updates on our ongoing basement transformation!
The “After” Transformation: A Functional Oasis for Home Storage

One particular element still on our to-do list is painting the built-in cabinet. Its current dingy appearance is a temporary aesthetic setback, but we envision it becoming a seamless, integrated part of the new design once painted to match the refreshed ambiance of the room. This small detail, once completed, will significantly contribute to the polished look we are striving for, further enhancing our functional basement.

Quite an improvement, wouldn’t you agree? To truly appreciate the scale of this transformation, let’s take a moment to refresh your memory and revisit how the room appeared just about a month ago. The contrast is quite striking and underscores the significant effort and vision invested in this DIY basement makeover, showcasing the dramatic before and after.
The “Before” State: A Cinder Block Dungeon Awaiting Transformation

Budgeting for a Basement Makeover: Value and Vision for DIY Projects
The entire metamorphosis, from a scary cinder block dungeon to a fully waterproofed, furniture-ready, and incredibly functional room, was achieved with a remarkably modest investment. A total of approximately $350 was spent on the carefully selected Ikea furniture – a true testament to the affordability and design of their pieces, especially considering the Expedit Workstation happened to be on sale, offering even greater value for our DIY basement project! Complementing this, around $400 was invested in essential prepping and waterproofing supplies, a crucial expenditure that ensured the long-term durability and usability of the space. We extend our immense gratitude once more to True Value for their invaluable contributions to this critical phase. This balanced expenditure highlights how strategic planning and smart shopping can transform even the most daunting spaces into integral and inviting parts of your home without breaking the bank, proving that a budget-friendly renovation is entirely possible.
The Next Chapter: Organizing and Refining Our Basement Sanctuary
While the exterior of our Ikea wardrobes presents a picture of sleek organization, the reality is that a significant amount of internal organizing still awaits us. (Is it terribly nerdy to admit that the prospect of meticulously organizing everything makes me a little giddy?) Our next major task involves a return trip to True Value, where we plan to acquire an abundance of awesome sealed plastic storage bins. These specialized bins are essential for protecting and neatly stacking a variety of items, from seasonal decor and cherished memorabilia to bulky sporting equipment and other miscellaneous belongings we prefer to keep neatly hidden behind closed doors. This systematic approach to organization will not only maximize every inch of storage space but also ensure that our stored items remain protected from dust and potential moisture, a common concern in basement environments, thus creating a truly functional basement storage system.
Beyond internal organization, our future plans extend to refining the aesthetics and functionality of the basement further. Top priorities include installing the perfect lighting to enhance the ambiance, curating suitable artwork to personalize the space, and finally, tackling the challenge of completely concealing that rather unsightly water heater – truly the “wart” of the house. These upcoming projects promise to add those crucial finishing touches, transforming the basement into a truly polished and enjoyable extension of our living space, embodying the full potential of DIY home improvement. Fun, fun, fun indeed!
