When Our Possessions Possess Us

The Year of Less: Navigating Consumerism and Cultivating a More Intentional Life with Cait Flanders

In the midst of our own month-long shopping ban, we had the incredible opportunity to sit down for a profound conversation with the very author who sparked this movement for so many: Cait Flanders. Her groundbreaking book, “The Year of Less,” challenged us and countless others to re-evaluate our relationship with material possessions, financial habits, and ultimately, our happiness. In this insightful discussion, Cait generously shared her journey, revealing fascinating insights, personal regrets, and explaining how her experimental year had a truly lasting impact on her perception of “stuff.”

Cait also took the time to clear up common misconceptions surrounding her famous shopping ban. She eloquently clarified that shopping itself isn’t the enemy; rather, it’s the unconscious, habitual, and often excessive consumption that can lead to financial strain and a cluttered life. We explored how this profound experiment not only reshaped her bank account but also significantly influenced her relationships, fostering deeper connections and a clearer sense of personal values. Beyond our chat with Cait, we also celebrate the initial payoffs from some major backyard landscaping work we outsourced last fall, and reflect on why we’re both incredibly grateful to have left our high school years far behind us.

What’s New: Our Thriving Backyard Transformation Journey

We’re thrilled to share the latest updates on our backyard, which is truly starting to come alive as spring progresses. What was once a daunting landscaping project is now showing incredible signs of growth and vitality. While there’s still more growth to come and a fresh layer of mulch is definitely on our to-do list, we couldn’t be more relieved and excited to see that almost everything we planted has successfully weathered its first, rather harsh, winter at our home.

In the image below, you can clearly spot some of the carefully selected ornamental trees we had planted. In the foreground, a graceful gingko tree stands tall – and yes, we made sure to choose the non-stinky variety! Behind it, a beautiful weeping cherry adds a touch of elegance to the landscape. A keen eye might even spot the subtle line where local deer decided to nibble on the bottoms of a few branches. Thankfully, with spring in full swing, new growth is already emerging, and the trees are recovering beautifully.

If you’re curious about the detailed decision-making process and the extensive work that went into transforming this part of our yard, we encourage you to revisit Episode #86. That episode delved into the specifics of our landscaping choices, including the invaluable two-year plant warranty that gave us such peace of mind. The show notes for that episode also feature a comprehensive collection of photos, chronicling our backyard’s progress over the years, including this rather stark “before” shot:

Comparing that “before” image to this week’s photograph from a similar angle truly highlights the incredible transformation our outdoor space has undergone. The vision we had for a lush, inviting backyard is steadily coming to fruition. Our next major project on the list involves installing a beautiful stone patio in the area currently occupied by pea gravel and an old, winding path on the bottom right. This patio will serve as the perfect foundation for an outdoor dining area or a cozy lounge space, further enhancing our outdoor living experience. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting phase of our backyard’s evolution!

Cait Flanders: The Enduring Impact of “The Year of Less”

Meet Cait Flanders, the visionary author behind the impactful book The Year of Less and the thoughtful voice behind her personal blog, CaitFlanders.com. Cait’s work has resonated with a global audience, inspiring a widespread movement towards minimalism, conscious consumption, and financial awareness. Her book isn’t just a memoir; it’s a practical guide and a philosophical exploration of what truly adds value to our lives, encouraging readers to differentiate between needs and wants. Through her personal experiment of a year-long shopping ban, Cait demonstrates that true fulfillment often comes from less, not more.

Her insights have directly influenced our own journey. We previously delved into thorough discussions of her book in Episode #89, exploring its core tenets and how they challenged our own consumer habits. Inspired by her candid account, we publicly announced our own commitment to a month-long shopping ban in Episode #93, seeking to experience firsthand the benefits of intentional spending and reduced material acquisition. Cait’s work isn’t about deprivation; it’s about reclaiming financial freedom and mental clarity by consciously choosing where our resources and attention go.

For those fascinated by her journey, Cait continued her experiment beyond the first year. You can dive deeper into her *second* year of living with a shopping ban and even browse her detailed inventory of *every single item* she purchased during that period by visiting this illuminating blog post. This level of transparency offers invaluable lessons for anyone considering a similar challenge, providing concrete examples of essential purchases versus discretionary spending.

Furthermore, that particular post culminates with a truly compelling infographic – a format we absolutely adore! – which brilliantly summarizes the collective feedback and experiences from hundreds of other individuals who embarked on their own shopping ban challenges. This infographic is a testament to the power of community and shared experiences in personal growth. It reveals common discoveries, unexpected benefits, and the transformative potential of living with less, offering a snapshot of a growing movement towards more mindful living. It’s a powerful visual reminder that you’re not alone in seeking a more intentional existence.

Hurrah for old friends that consistently deliver – especially those that help you expertly fill in your brows! For those curious about options, I’m reliably informed that these pencils are also available in other versatile shades, including blonde and dark brunette. I now officially possess more knowledge about eyebrow pencils than the average husband, I think! And for anyone wondering about the other makeup staples Sherry keeps in her minimalist beauty case, she detailed her routine, along with her rather unique coconut oil obsession, in this insightful post.
