An Enchanting Autumn Escape: A Brevard, NC Wedding & Treasure Hunt
Last weekend, the crisp air of autumn beckoned us to the picturesque mountains of Brevard, North Carolina, for a joyous occasion: my cousin’s wedding. This delightful event translated into an eagerly anticipated weekend road trip, trading the familiar urban sprawl for the serene beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

While this particular journey may not have rivaled the epic scale of our road trip to Texas for another cousin’s wedding a couple of years back (yes, I come from a large, wonderful family!), it was nonetheless an incredibly memorable experience. Brevard, a charming town nestled in southwestern North Carolina, sits gracefully between the vibrant city of Asheville and the South Carolina border – so close, in fact, that the rehearsal dinner was held just across state lines! Our seven-hour drive from Richmond, Virginia, was pleasantly broken up by a stop in Charlotte, where we reconnected with our dear friends, Matt and Kristin. The wedding ceremony itself, a beautiful celebration of love and family, was undoubtedly the highlight of our trip (and you can find some lovely snapshots over on Young House Life). However, Brevard revealed itself to be a treasure trove of unexpected “adventures” and delightful discoveries beyond the matrimonial festivities.
Exploring Brevard’s Unique Charm: More Than Just a Wedding Destination

Brevard, often dubbed the “Land of Waterfalls,” is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, outdoor activities, and a vibrant arts scene. Its quaint downtown area, lined with independent shops and inviting eateries, immediately captures the heart of any visitor. Our exploration began with a deep dive into the town’s thriving antique and salvage scene, a personal favorite pastime for Sherry and me. We’re always on the lookout for unique pieces that can add character and history to our home, and Brevard certainly didn’t disappoint. The hunt for vintage treasures in a new town is always an adventure, and this trip proved to be exceptionally fruitful, even if we didn’t end up buying everything that caught our eye.
Unearthing History: A Deep Dive into Brevard’s Antique Stores
The Antique Mall downtown stood out as one of the most impressive and immaculately maintained antique stores we’ve encountered in recent memory. Its well-curated aisles were a testament to the passion of its vendors, offering a wide array of vintage goods, from furniture to curiosities. Adding to its appeal, a fantastic architectural salvage place was located right next door, brimming with reclaimed doors, windows, hardware, and other unique building components that spark endless DIY inspiration. Of course, we couldn’t resist sharing some of the most captivating finds that caught our decorator’s eye. Among them was an incredible collection of antique wooden printing press letters, each a piece of tangible history, carrying the weight of countless stories and publications.

Priced at just two dollars each, these individual letters were incredibly tempting. It’s truly astonishing that we managed to walk away without an entire alphabet’s worth! We found ourselves admiring their craftsmanship and the patina of age, appreciating their beauty without adding to our already substantial collection (you can peek at the ones we already proudly display here). The charm of these old artifacts lies not just in their aesthetic appeal but in the stories they silently tell, transporting you back to a bygone era of craftsmanship and communication.
Equally alluring was a display rack overflowing with old skeleton keys, each priced at a mere three dollars. The sheer variety of shapes, sizes, and intricate designs was captivating, making it incredibly difficult to resist acquiring a handful. Again, our self-control was commendable, though Sherry did muse aloud about the incredible potential of buying a large quantity of these keys to craft a magnificent, oversized chandelier. Imagine a grand, custom-made light fixture, cascading with hundreds of unique antique keys, casting intriguing shadows over a dining room! It would be a showstopper, a true testament to creative upcycling. Perhaps on our next visit, that ambitious project will finally come to fruition.

Local Art & Quirky Treasures: Unforgettable Finds in Brevard
Beyond the industrial charm of salvage and the historical allure of typography, the Antique Mall also showcased a delightful array of local artistry. What we most seriously considered purchasing were several charming paintings by local Brevard artists, each capturing the essence of the region. One such piece was a quaint watercolor depicting a rustic covered bridge, a scene so emblematic of Appalachian charm. It was an original, beautifully rendered, and truly unique. However, the $49 price tag, while reasonable for an original artwork, was a bit more than we had budgeted for spontaneous art purchases that day. Looking back now, there’s a pang of regret; we often find ourselves wondering why we are sometimes so hesitant. That covered bridge painting would have been a perfect memento!

Another piece that undeniably captivated us, though well outside our vacation spending limit (which topped $200+), was a strangely compelling painting of a ram-like creature. Its unique style and undeniable presence drew us in. While Sherry was certainly intrigued, I found myself even more utterly smitten – head over heels, or perhaps, more appropriately, head over hooves! That ram painting had an unexpected charm that lingered long after we left the store. Oh, man ram, you are missed!

As we continued our exploration, we stumbled upon a collection of distinctive pottery. Raise your hand if these whimsical pieces instantly bring to mind the vibrant and often playful designs of Jonathan Adler pottery! (Picture Sherry and I enthusiastically raising both of ours!) The influence of modern design, blended with quirky individuality, was evident, making these pieces stand out amongst the more traditional antique offerings. It’s always a treat to find items that bridge the gap between vintage charm and contemporary aesthetics.

Of course, no antique or thrift store visit is complete without a few truly quirky, laugh-out-loud finds. Brevard’s offerings certainly erred on the side of delightful oddity. Who, after all, could resist the inexplicable allure of a naked KISS action figure for $40? Or the sheer, bizarre brilliance of a $45 light-up stained glass chicken Beyoncé? These items, though perhaps not destined for our living room, add immeasurable character to these shops and make the treasure hunt all the more entertaining.

I confess to having a particular fondness for the rustic texture and appearance of potato sacks. There’s something inherently charming about their humble origins and natural fabric. So, when we spotted one, my immediate thought was its potential. The only question was whether this particular sack was indeed for potatoes – though I sincerely hope the sarcasm in that query isn’t lost on anyone! Sherry, ever the creative visionary, immediately saw its potential as a unique pillow cover or a distinctive ottoman. Indeed, potato sack fabric has found its way into many modern homes, even adorning chairs with its raw, organic appeal, proving that beauty can truly be found in the most unexpected places.

Supporting a Cause: The Humane Society Thrift Store Experience
Directly across the street from the bustling Antique Mall, we discovered another gem: a thrift store operated by the local Humane Society. It’s worth noting that Brevard is located in Transylvania County – yes, truly, no joke! While Sherry was able to browse through the various sections, my experience in this particular store was rather limited. Our daughter, Clara, instantly became utterly captivated by the kittens available for adoption, an understandable distraction! So, while Clara and I spent our time cooing over our new furry friends, Sherry dutifully explored the back aisles. I imagine everyone in the store grew quite accustomed to hearing Clara’s enthusiastic refrain: “Hi kittycat. Hi kittycatkittycatkittycat! Buh-bye kittycat! Hi kittycat!” The joy of children meeting animals is truly a heartwarming sight.

Despite the adorable distraction, Sherry managed to unearth a couple of entertaining items, both coincidentally themed around chihuahuas. These quirky finds made us wish our own chihuahua, Burger, had been with us to enjoy them! He was back at the pet-friendly rental cottage we’d secured for the weekend, enjoying a relaxing time with the rest of our family. It’s always fun to find little nods to our pets when we’re out and about, especially when they’re as distinct as these chihuahua-themed treasures.

The Thrill of the Find: Habitat for Humanity ReStore Purchase
Of all the delightful shops and boutiques we meandered through during our Brevard explorations, there was only one place where we actually made a purchase: the local Habitat For Humanity ReStore. These stores are fantastic for finding unique, gently used building materials, furniture, and home goods at incredible prices, all while supporting a wonderful cause. While the image below isn’t of the store itself, it perfectly captures the spirit of community and purpose behind these valuable establishments – their delivery truck, ready to transport new treasures to eager DIYers and renovators.

Sherry, with her playful sense of humor, actually thought the truck would look even better with a specific modification. She specifically asked me to make note that “Edward” (from the Twilight saga, naturally) was on the other side of the truck. Women and their vampires… it’s a phenomenon this husband will likely never fully comprehend, but it certainly adds a layer of amusement to our travels!

Anyway, back to our actual purchase. For a mere $5, we picked up the charming frame visible on the right in the image below. Inside, it held an intricately cut paper design, a delicate piece of art in itself. We didn’t have a specific spot in mind for it at the moment of purchase, but we had a strong feeling we’d find the perfect place once we returned home. That’s often the beauty of thrift store finds – you buy what you love, and the perfect spot reveals itself later. True to form, upon arriving back home, we discovered an ideal location for it within our hallway gallery. It replaced a rather generic picture of apples that had previously resided there, a relic from our very first kitchen.

The delicate paper cutting required a small trim to fit perfectly from top to bottom within its new frame, but the result was fantastic. We absolutely adore how it instantly enlivened that specific corner of the wall, injecting a stronger splash of color and an engaging, intricate pattern. This small addition brought fresh life and personality to a previously understated area. As an added bonus, we now have an extra frame from the original piece, which I’m certain will be painted and repurposed for another spot in our home, continuing the cycle of creative reuse and decor evolution.

Reflections and Future Plans: A Return to the Blue Ridge
Leaving Brevard, we felt a mild sense of accomplishment, grateful that we hadn’t returned home entirely empty-handed. There’s a special joy in snagging unique items for our house during road trips; these finds serve as tangible memories, keeping the spirit of our travels alive long after the journey ends. However, our brief visit allowed us only a tantalizing taste of what Brevard truly offers, and even less of Asheville – we merely passed through on the highway. This short introduction has only fueled our desire to return for a longer, more in-depth visit sometime soon. There’s so much more to explore, from Brevard’s famed waterfalls and scenic hiking trails to Asheville’s renowned culinary scene and vibrant arts district.

Perhaps another cousin’s wedding will provide the perfect excuse for our next Blue Ridge Mountain adventure! In the meantime, we’re eager to hear about your own recent travels. Has anyone else hit the road for a memorable trip lately? Or perhaps attended any beautiful fall weddings that left a lasting impression? And for those familiar with the area, if you have any suggestions for us (or for other travelers) regarding things to do, places to eat, or hidden gems in Brevard or the wider Asheville area, we would absolutely love to hear them! It truly looked like such a cool and inspiring place, brimming with potential for future explorations and unique discoveries.
In the interim, don’t forget to check out some of the cute and creative touches from the Brevard wedding itself, along with some cherished family pictures, which you can find right here on Young House Life.
