Your Front Porch: Three Fast Upgrades for a Fresh Look

The progress on our beach house is truly taking off, and we know you’re eager for a comprehensive update (for now, you can catch some sneak peeks on Instagram and Facebook). However, we have some exciting news to share about our front porch: it has officially shed its neglected, abandoned appearance and blossomed into a welcoming entryway. Plus, I’ve managed to get a bit “creative” with the greenery, ensuring our plants will thrive indefinitely! While I don’t have a perfect “before” photo—it wasn’t exactly a moment I thought to immortalize—imagine a tired, dirty doormat, brittle dead plants, discolored brickwork, and a generous display of spiderwebs (not the charming Halloween kind, mind you).

Revitalizing Your Home’s First Impression: The Front Porch Transformation

Your front porch is more than just an entry point; it’s the first impression your home makes on guests and passersby. A well-maintained and beautifully styled porch significantly enhances your home’s curb appeal, inviting warmth and reflecting the care you put into your living space. For years, our porch had slowly, subtly, fallen into disrepair, becoming an area we simply overlooked. The cumulative effect of minor neglect meant that what was once a charming entrance had become a drab, uninspiring space. This comprehensive front porch refresh wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was about reclaiming that vital first impression and injecting new life into our home’s exterior.

The Fading Welcome: Why Your Doormat Matters

Sometimes, it takes a fresh perspective to truly see what’s right in front of you. For us, the glaring problem with our porch came into sharp focus during our annual First Day of School photo tradition. Every year, we line up our kids in front of the door to document their growth. This year, as we compared the new photos to those from previous years, we noticed something unexpected beyond the kids’ height difference: the tragic, gradual fading of our front doormat. It had deteriorated so slowly that we hadn’t consciously registered its demise until we saw photographic evidence of its former glory. It was a clear sign that this essential piece of outdoor decor was practically begging to be replaced, serving as a dull, worn welcome instead of a vibrant one.

A high-quality doormat does more than just wipe shoes; it sets the tone for your home, adding a touch of personality and enhancing your overall curb appeal. We opted for another extra-wide mat (this is the one we chose). If your home features sidelights or double doors, I cannot stress enough the transformative power of a wider doormat. While they might be a bit challenging to locate and aren’t always the cheapest option (ours, measuring 30 x 48 inches, came in at $79), the investment is absolutely worthwhile. Standard-sized doormats often appear dwarfed and out of proportion on larger doorways, creating an unbalanced and less inviting look. The wider mat instantly grounded our entrance, making it feel more substantial and welcoming.

Conquering the Greenery Challenge: The Move to Faux Evergreens

Beyond the doormat, the true heroes of this front porch transformation are undoubtedly the two evergreen trees nestled in their sleek black planters. For the better part of the last four and a half years, keeping anything alive in these planters has been an epic, disheartening battle. Our porch receives an unholy amount of direct sunlight, creating an incinerator-like environment for any real plants we dared to place there. Each year, with renewed optimism, we’d purchase beautiful new plants, only to watch them crisp, burn, and slowly perish under the relentless sun. The sad, withered remains would then sit, a testament to our horticultural failures, until we inevitably repeated the cycle of hope and despair.

We’ve experimented with a frustrating array of options, each met with the same tragic fate. Annuals like creeping jenny and petunias would quickly scorch and die. Robust evergreens such as boxwoods and dwarf spruces, which you’d expect to be resilient, perished even faster, turning brown and brittle within weeks. I tried everything: setting daily alarms on my phone to ensure consistent watering, even resorting to the classic upside-down wine bottle trick for slow-release hydration. It felt like a curse, an insurmountable challenge that refused to be broken. The constant cycle of buying, planting, nurturing, and then mourning dead plants was not only a waste of money but also a drain on my enthusiasm for outdoor decorating. We yearned for lush, vibrant greenery to frame our front door, but nature simply wasn’t cooperating in this particular microclimate.

The Liberation of Low-Maintenance Landscaping: Embracing Artificial Plants

And then, a revelation: these evergreens can never die because THEY’RE FAKE! After years of trying tirelessly to make something—anything!—survive in these cursed planters, discovering these faux 36-inch evergreens felt like a profound liberation. They entered my life at precisely the right moment, when I was completely at my wit’s end with the plant struggle. Initially, I harbored concerns that they might appear cheap, plastic-y, or obviously artificial, detracting from the natural aesthetic we desired. However, I was desperate enough to roll the dice and give them a try. The result has been nothing short of a miracle for our front porch decor.

When they first arrive, they’re a bit squished from shipping and require a good fluffing to regain their shape, but once expanded, they are incredibly convincing! The color is spot-on, a vibrant and natural evergreen hue that doesn’t scream “plastic.” Their substantial size is fantastic, providing the stately presence we always wanted. Perhaps best of all, the upfront cost is significantly less than what I’ve cumulatively spent on all the real plants that have inevitably perished on this porch over the years. This switch to high-quality artificial plants for outdoor use has not only solved a persistent problem but has also proven to be a smart, cost-effective, and surprisingly realistic solution for our low-maintenance landscaping needs. I am, quite simply, in love with these bushes, and if loving them is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

To further enhance their realism, I simply placed the small black pot each faux tree comes in directly into the dirt of our larger black planters (similar black planters are available here if you’re looking to replicate the look). The surrounding real dirt acts as a clever illusion, grounding the artificial evergreens and making them appear as if they’re genuinely growing in place. This simple trick elevates their natural appearance, making them practically indistinguishable from living plants at first glance. The result is a perpetually green, vibrant, and effortlessly beautiful entrance that finally lives up to our vision for inviting curb appeal.

The Power of Clean: Pressure Washing for a Pristine Porch

The final, yet subtly impactful, element that brought our porch back to life was a thorough cleaning – what I like to call “deferred maintenance” on our part. We recently acquired our own pressure washer, primarily to tackle the brickwork on the back of the house after removing our old deck. Once the pressure washer was out and running, my husband, John (who, it seems, enjoys spraying everything with it), took it upon himself to give the front porch a much-needed blast. Again, I don’t have a pristine “before” photo of the entire process, but you can clearly see the accumulated grime and discoloration on the brick steps in this unearthed photo below. It illustrates just how much dirt and mildew had settled into the pores of our outdoor surfaces over time.

Another telling image is this one I quickly snapped for InstaStories to show off my new faux evergreens. Take a closer look at the white railing – it’s distinctly green and fuzzy with mildew. Yeesh! This serves as a stark reminder of how quickly outdoor surfaces can accumulate unsightly buildup from weather, moisture, and general environmental exposure. This area hadn’t seen a pressure washer since before we moved in over four years ago, making it long overdue for a deep clean. The before-and-after results were just as dramatic as what we observed in this previous post on power washing.

What truly surprised us, however, was the impact on our stone aggregate walkway. This was actually the very first time we had ever pressure washed this particular surface. It’s one of those things you don’t fully appreciate the need for until you witness the dramatic difference it makes. In the photo below, John had just completed cleaning the outline and a diagonal stripe, showcasing the incredible improvement. The contrast between the dirty, discolored stone and the vibrant, clean aggregate is astonishing. How crazy is that difference? Pressure washing is an incredibly effective and satisfying way to instantly boost your home’s exterior appearance, removing years of accumulated dirt, grime, and mildew, and restoring surfaces to their original glory.

A Complete Porch Makeover: Welcoming and Worry-Free

So, this is the magnificent transformation our front porch has undergone, now radiating a welcoming charm thanks to our new, virtually indestructible faux plants, our fresh, unfaded extra-wide doormat, and a rejuvenating stone & brick “facial” courtesy of thorough power washing. These three simple yet impactful updates have completely revitalized our entryway, boosting its curb appeal and making it a space we’re proud to showcase. The days of struggling with dying plants, a dingy welcome mat, and grimy surfaces are happily behind us.

Looking ahead, I also have some exciting plans bubbling for further enhancing the portico, envisioning chunkier trim around the triangular eaves and more robust, squared-off columns. In the interim, however, I’m perfectly content with the fact that our porch no longer resembles an unkempt venue hosting a spider meet-and-greet for the entire surrounding five counties. While the real arachnids have (mostly) been evicted, we did embrace some playful spooky aesthetics for Halloween (because fake spooky things unequivocally beat ten thousand actual, eight-legged spiders any day of the week!).

Seasonal Charm: Our Fun Halloween Porch Decor

While much of our Halloween decor is, by its very nature, seasonal, certain elements have found a special place in our hearts. If our kids have any say in the matter, our beloved chihuahua skeleton, affectionately christened “Skeleburger,” would become a permanent, year-round fixture on the porch. To complete our festive display, we also added a few classic pumpkins, hand-picked during a fun outing with the kids, alongside a selection of quirky “animal friends.” While I haven’t been able to locate an identical owl to link to, this one would certainly make an awesome addition to any Halloween decor scheme, perfectly blending whimsy and a touch of seasonal spookiness.

Our long-time resident, this charming ceramic white rabbit, has been a porch staple for quite a while, living outside year-round as a subtle message to our neighbors that “ceramic animals are always welcome here.” He seamlessly transitions into the Halloween theme, although he’s definitely out-crept by the striking presence of the black feather crow and our delightfully floppy little black feather wreath. These elements combine to create a whimsical yet subtly eerie Halloween display, bringing character and seasonal cheer to our newly refreshed front porch.

A Canine Critic: Burger’s Opinion of Skeleburger

Now, I know the burning question on everyone’s mind: how does our real chihuahua, Burger, feel about his skeletal doppelganger, Skeleburger? Does he adore him? Does he loathe him? Well, Burger’s reaction can best be described as profoundly aloof and utterly unimpressed. Whenever he encounters Skeleburger, his body language conveys a clear message: “Oh, it’s just you again. How utterly boring.” He doesn’t merely strut or sashay past; he makes a deliberate point of appearing straight-up unimpressed by the stationary bone-dog.

Sometimes, he’ll pause, offer a dramatic yawn, and then continue on his way, as if the skeleton isn’t even worth a second glance. This time, however, he truly outdid himself. He actually stopped dead in his tracks and stretched right in front of Skeleburger, as if to say, “Look how long and flexible I am! You can’t even move. And seriously, why do you even have ears if you’re a skeleton?!” It was a masterclass in canine dominance and an absolutely hilarious demonstration of Burger’s superior, living agility compared to the static, unmoving skeleton. His complete disinterest and subtle digs at Skeleburger’s immobility added a delightful, unexpected layer of personality to our Halloween porch display, proving that even our pets have strong opinions on home decor.

Lasting Impressions: A Porch Built to Last

So, that’s the story of our front porch’s exciting transformation. While the occasional spiderweb might eventually make a reappearance, and our new doormat will, inevitably, one day begin to show signs of wear, I’m absolutely convinced of one thing: these remarkable faux evergreen bushes are going to outlive us all. This front porch refresh wasn’t just about temporary fixes; it was about implementing smart, sustainable solutions that provide lasting beauty and significantly enhance our home’s curb appeal for years to come. We’ve moved beyond constant maintenance headaches to a more enjoyable, visually appealing, and truly welcoming entrance.
