For us, after more than a year and a half of settling in, that time has finally arrived. We’ve been slowly tackling the “we’ll-just-put-this-here-for-now” phenomenon that plagues every new homeowner. Our latest mission? Addressing a comically undersized mirror that had resided above our fireplace mantel since the very first week we moved in. This small, unassuming piece, a relic from our previous den, was simply too tiny for its prominent spot, making the entire setup feel disproportionate and incomplete. It was time for a significant change, a grand transformation that would truly elevate our living space.

Before we could even think about mounting it, an essential preparatory step was required. The mirror’s original hanging hardware was configured for vertical orientation. Since our plan was to hang it horizontally above the mantel, we needed to carefully remove the existing metal holders from the top and reposition them on the longer sides of the frame. This involved unscrewing them and re-securing them with the original screws, ensuring they were equidistant from the top edge for a balanced hang. Following this, we threaded a strong, heavy-duty picture hanging wire between these newly positioned metal holders. This robust wire would eventually slip over the four screws we had meticulously installed in the wall, distributing the mirror’s weight evenly and securely. A quick note on the back of the mirror: you might notice some rather enthusiastic duct tape. This mirror was a fantastic $5 yard sale find from several years ago, and it came with this charmingly “crazy looking” back. Rest assured, despite its unconventional appearance, the mirror is incredibly stable and structurally sound. The front, mercifully, is significantly more presentable, and the tape, while not confidence-inspiring, does not detract from its overall integrity. Thank goodness for yard sale bargains!
So, we diligently moved the hanging hardware, reusing the existing screws, and then affixed a strong, heavy-duty picture hanging wire – no flimsy floral wire here!

Oh, and as you might notice in that picture above, we also recently introduced another affordable Urban Outfitters rug into the cooking area of our kitchen. We initially moved our original fireplace-zone rug there for a trial run to ensure it wouldn’t become a nuisance or a constant target for spills. With about a foot of perimeter space around the stove, sink, and counters, it proved to be perfectly functional, so we happily ordered its twin. And there she blows, completing another subtle yet impactful layer to our kitchen’s evolving aesthetic.

With such a grand and neutral backdrop, styling the mantel becomes an effortless joy. I simply tossed up some favorite random items, including a charming thrift store find from Atlanta that I picked up with KB. The mirror’s versatility means I can effortlessly swap out decor whenever the mood strikes, experimenting with different textures, colors, and arrangements without ever clashing with the primary focal point.

My more simplified, yet equally enthusiastic, description is that this mirror now bounces approximately ten times more light throughout the room.
