Discovering Home: A Heartfelt Tour of My Parents’ New Richmond Sanctuary

While I don’t typically pen these House Crashing features, this particular home holds a deeply special place in my heart. It’s not just any house; it’s the brand-new residence of my wonderful parents here in Richmond, a space that will undoubtedly become increasingly cherished with each passing season. Having already “crashed” their cozy pad for a few days after Hurricane Irene left our own home without power, and having spent countless delightful evenings gathered there, my husband and I felt it was high time to capture its charm and share it with all of you.

Their move represents a significant new chapter, a testament to embracing change and finding fresh joy. It’s more than just a change of address; it’s a lifestyle evolution that many aspire to as they transition into retirement. This tour isn’t just about admiring beautiful decor; it’s about witnessing the thoughtful journey of making a new house truly feel like home, infused with personal touches and newfound style.

This heartwarming snapshot captures my dad and mom shortly after their moving day back in May. You might notice the lavender door – a charming detail the previous owners left. However, with a dash of their signature style, my parents have since transformed it into a vibrant, welcoming bright red, a small but significant gesture of making the home distinctly their own from day one.

The Journey to Richmond: Downsizing and New Beginnings

As I’ve shared previously, my parents embarked on a significant life transition when they sold their beloved home of 32 years in Northern Virginia – the very house where I grew up and created countless childhood memories. Their decision to relocate two hours south to Richmond was driven by a desire to be closer to some of their children and grandchildren, and to embrace a more manageable, easier-to-maintain home as part of my mom’s well-deserved retirement goals. One of her primary aspirations? To never have to mulch a garden again! This practical goal speaks volumes about the desire for a simpler, more enjoyable lifestyle in their golden years.

They discovered a beautiful, relatively new community of duplexes, conveniently located about 15 minutes from our own place. Despite being a touch smaller in square footage than their sprawling previous residence, this new home remarkably exudes a grander, more sophisticated ambiance. It’s a testament to thoughtful design and efficient use of space, proving that downsizing doesn’t mean sacrificing elegance or comfort. Let’s dive into some of the stunning details that contribute to this feeling, starting with a surprisingly opulent corner.

A Half Bath with Unexpected Grandeur

Elegant half bath with floral wallpaper and an ornate gold mirror.

Much of the initial design aesthetic within the house, including this stunning half bath, is courtesy of the previous owners. My parents have only resided here for less than four months, so they’re still in the process of personalizing every nook and cranny. During their house hunting adventures, they initially harbored reservations about the former owners’ style, fearing it might be a tad too formal for their tastes. Their previous bathrooms, for instance, were characterized by bold, vibrant paint choices, a stark contrast to the delicate floral wallpaper and ornate touches they encountered here. However, as often happens when embracing a new chapter, a wonderful shift occurred in their perspective.

Somewhere along the way, a moment of liberating realization struck. My mom, now retired and reveling in newfound freedom, thought, “I’m retired, so who says I can’t have an ornate gold mirror in my half bath?” This sentiment perfectly encapsulates the joy of retirement living – the freedom to shed preconceived notions of style and embrace what truly brings you delight. It’s a reminder that home decor should be a personal journey of expression, especially when entering a phase of life dedicated to personal enjoyment.

And we, for one, absolutely adore it! Perhaps it’s partly the sheer pleasure of witnessing my parents courageously embrace a completely new style, stepping outside their comfort zone. But beyond that, there’s an inherent joy in entering a home that dares to take risks, making design decisions you might not initially consider for yourself. It inspires you to stretch your own creative boundaries and rethink conventional aesthetics. Clearly, my mom is learning to deeply love her fresh new look, as evidenced by her recent acquisition: this enchanting light fixture from Ballard Designs. She thoughtfully chose it to replace a piece the previous owners had taken with them, proving her commitment to curating a space that genuinely reflects her evolving taste. She confessed, with a twinkle in her eye, that she “never thought that she’d purchase something like this in a million years,” yet its playful elegance harmonizes perfectly within the space, adding another layer of charm and personality.

Thoughtful Touches in the Dining Room and Beyond

Elegant dining room with a large ceiling medallion and a newly placed chandelier.

Even after just four short months, my parents are actively imprinting their unique identity upon the house, transforming it from a beautiful structure into a cherished home. For instance, while the previous owners generously left behind exquisite drapes and a striking large ceiling medallion, the space notably lacked a chandelier. Rather than rushing out to buy a new one, my parents ingeniously repurposed an existing piece. They meticulously moved a chandelier, which was slightly too large for their breakfast nook, into the dining room. Here, it found its perfect home, fitting the grand scale of the room much better. This creative reuse exemplifies smart decorating and resourcefulness – a true “three cheers for working with what you’ve got!” approach to interior design.

Dining room featuring a stylish wicker chair and a new side table.

While their move necessitated the purchase of some new furniture pieces to optimally fit the proportions of their new home, my parents are also having immense fun skillfully integrating their existing treasures. A prime example is this absolutely fabulous wicker chair, a delightful find from Pottery Barn a few years back, which now adds a touch of casual elegance to the dining area. Complementing it perfectly is the side table, a fantastic new on-sale discovery from Ballard Designs. My sister-in-law, Sherry, has actually declared it her absolute favorite item in the entire house! Its unique charm comes from its little clawed feet delicately clutching a ball at the bottom, all finished in her beloved Oil Rubbed Bronze (ORB), a finish that adds depth and character to any space.

The Inviting Open Concept Living Room

Spacious living room with high ceilings, built-in shelves, and a cozy fireplace.

This charming wicker chair finds its place within the expansive, open-concept living room, a hub of comfort and style. This room boasts impressive lofted ceilings that create an airy, spacious feel, complemented by some sweet built-in shelving units perfect for displaying cherished keepsakes and books. A cozy electric fireplace adds warmth and ambiance, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and family gatherings. The open layout seamlessly connects it to other areas, fostering a sense of togetherness and ease of movement throughout the main living space.

Living room showcasing a distinctive custom cabinet crafted from reclaimed wood.

Without a doubt, the most striking and frequently discussed feature in their new home is this magnificent custom cabinet. While most houses in their development feature a standard, builder-basic white closet in this particular spot, the previous owners truly went above and beyond. They commissioned a bespoke piece, intricately designed using beautiful reclaimed wood and unique ironwork sourced from Caravati’s, a renowned local architectural salvage establishment. This choice instantly elevates the space, infusing it with character and a sense of history that mass-produced furniture simply cannot replicate.

The original owners utilized this impressive fixture as a liquor cabinet, a testament to its versatile design. However, my non-drinking parents have beautifully re-envisioned its purpose. Its top shelves now proudly display cherished family frames and elegant dinnerware, with the cleverly designed top doors flipping open and sliding seamlessly into the piece, rendering them invisible when open. The bottom drawers, discreetly hidden behind two doors, serve as perfect storage for beloved photo albums and an array of games, making it a functional and sentimental focal point that truly adapts to their lifestyle.

A Chef’s Delight: The Modern Kitchen and Breakfast Nook

Modern kitchen with a large island, stainless steel appliances, and ample counter space.

Positioned right beside the impressive custom cabinet, their kitchen is a true culinary haven. It features an outstanding island at its heart, thoughtfully designed to house both the sink and the dishwasher, optimizing workflow and counter space. To the far right, a “killer” pantry cabinet provides abundant storage, an essential for any organized kitchen. And if that weren’t enough, there’s another spacious pantry closet just beyond the magnet board on the far left wall, ensuring that every cooking essential has its designated place. This design emphasis on functionality and storage makes meal preparation a breeze.

We admit, we’re more than a little envious of many of the features in this kitchen. From the awesome black granite countertops, which are subtly flecked with captivating details, to the extra-high ceilings that amplify the sense of space and light, and the sleek stainless steel appliances that lend a modern touch – every element contributes to an incredibly inviting and highly functional environment. It’s a true dream kitchen, and we count ourselves lucky that we get to enjoy its splendor regularly, often over delicious home-cooked dinners with my wonderful parents.

Bright breakfast nook with colorful chairs and a new chandelier.

And here’s that cozy breakfast nook I mentioned earlier, which once temporarily housed the much larger dining room chandelier. It now features a more appropriately sized and equally stylish fixture from Ballard Designs, perfectly scaled for the space. Take a look at those vibrant, colorful chairs from Pier 1! My mom called us with such excitement, saying, “Come see the chairs I got for the breakfast nook; they’re unlike anything I would ever have chosen even a year ago – I’m so in love with them.” It’s truly a delight to witness them having so much fun with new things for their new house, embracing bold choices and discovering evolving tastes as they settle into their retirement home.

Outdoor Serenity: The Patio and Second Story Retreats

Outdoor patio area, perfectly sized for relaxation and family time.

Just beyond those expansive, bright kitchen windows lies their charming patio. It’s an outdoor oasis perfectly sized for their needs, offering a delightful spot for morning coffee or evening relaxation. The thoughtfully installed fence provides a safe and secure perimeter, ideal for keeping the grandkids happily contained while they play. In fact, we’ve already initiated a plastic baby pool out there, much to Clara’s delight – she simply didn’t want to leave! It’s clear this patio will be the setting for many joyful family moments and refreshing outdoor breaks.

Ascending to the second story of the house reveals a spacious landing that cleverly serves a dual purpose: it acts as my dad’s dedicated home office and transforms into a lively play area when the grandkids come to visit. This level also features two inviting guest bedrooms, including the one where we comfortably stayed during the three-day power outage following Hurricane Irene. This room was already painted in a wonderfully warm and inviting color when my parents moved in. While we wish we knew the exact shade to share, my parents inherited already-painted walls in every room and unfortunately don’t have a clue! However, we can tell you that the stylish bed frame is another excellent find from Ballard Designs – my mom is a pro at waiting for sales and leveraging coupon codes for smart purchases.

Regrettably, we weren’t able to snap photos of the other guest room, as Clara was happily napping in it during our visit. The main bedroom is also still a bit of a work in progress, a testament to the ongoing process of truly making a house your own. But perhaps someday soon, we’ll capture those spaces for you, completing this delightful tour once my parents have had a bit more time to fully settle in. They are such incredibly good sports for letting us “crash” a house they’ve only lived in for a mere fraction of the time compared to their previous 32-year residence!

Sentimental Connections and Fond Memories

Oh, and I absolutely cannot forget to mention one of our most cherished features of their new home, a small detail with immense sentimental value. This is a very special brick from our old house, specifically one that was carefully removed during our first home’s kitchen doorway widening project. We gave it to them a few years ago, though I can’t recall the exact occasion – perhaps there wasn’t one, just a heartfelt gesture. Regardless, it has proudly graced their new doorstep since day one, a tangible link between their past and present, and a beautiful symbol of enduring family connections.

In related news, we’ve heard wonderful updates from the new owners of my parents’ old home. They are a lovely family with young children who are having an absolute blast befriending other kids in the neighborhood. It seems the old cul-de-sac is once again bustling with the kind of lively action it enjoyed back in the vibrant 1980s, when my generation was growing up there. There’s a true sense of joy in knowing the home continues to be filled with laughter and new memories. Though, I did hear that my sister’s old bedroom has undergone quite the transformation – it’s now painted a striking Baltimore Ravens purple! Wow, what a change! It just goes to show how each family leaves their own unique mark on a home, continuing its story for generations to come.
