Our New Home Checklist: What We’re Tackling and What We’re Skipping

Our journey to transform our new house from a distance has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis since we first embarked on the house-hunting adventure in February. What began with the modest expectation of avoiding any major renovation projects has evolved into a comprehensive strategy, driven by the unique character of our new Florida home and our desire to create a truly livable space. Many of you have been curious about our current endeavors, what significant tasks remain, and our projected timeline for this ambitious house renovation. Today, we’re pulling back the curtain to share the twists and turns our plans have taken, revealing how we ultimately landed on our current approach. We’ll also delve into the surprisingly intense process of packing all our belongings, provide an update on our move date, and even explore the intriguing question: what truly defines an “adult” kitchen?

Embracing the Change: Our Evolving Renovation Journey and Moving Updates

The path to our new Florida home has been anything but linear, full of unexpected turns and exhilarating challenges. Our initial vision for a simple, low-effort move quickly gave way to the reality of renovating a home from a considerable distance. This section will walk you through the latest developments, from the intricate process of packing our entire lives into a PODS container to the strategies we employed for downsizing and setting up our new base of operations.

  • Our former office, once a hub of activity and creativity, now stands remarkably sparse. With the majority of our possessions meticulously packed and en route to Florida in our trusty PODS container, the room offers a glimpse into our transition. What remains are a few essential items that we sold to the new homeowners, such as the large floating desk and its accompanying chair. The computers, of course, are traveling with us, alongside as many beloved plants as Sherry can strategically fit into the car – a logistical puzzle in itself for moving day!

  • For those eager to get a comprehensive look at our previous home before the big move, we’ll be sharing a full video walkthrough. This Wednesday on the blog, you’ll be able to see exactly what items made the cut for the PODS and what found new homes, along with a final video house tour filmed just before our early March house showings. It’s a bittersweet farewell but an exciting prelude to what’s next.
  • The art of downsizing is often underestimated, but we tackled it head-on. If you’re grappling with similar decisions about what furniture to keep and what to part with, we highly recommend revisiting our episode titled “How Exactly Do You Downsize Your Stuff?” (Episode #169). We found that asking ourselves four distinct questions made the seemingly daunting task surprisingly manageable. The sense of liberation that came with fitting all our cherished belongings into a single PODS container was truly immense.

  • Witnessing our PODS container gradually fill with the last few items felt like completing a giant, complex puzzle. Every box, every piece of furniture, had to be strategically placed to maximize space and ensure stability for the long journey ahead.
  • Given some of the horror stories we’d heard from our community – tales of items shifting during transport and even wedging the container door shut, requiring professional assistance to pry it open – we adopted a somewhat “neurotic” approach to packing. To prevent any such mishaps, we engineered a makeshift cardboard barrier at the back of our PODS container. This simple yet effective measure was designed to prevent items from sliding against the door, providing us with a crucial layer of peace of mind. Here’s to hoping our efforts paid off!

  • While we might have been a bit more meticulous than strictly necessary – we also heard from many who simply “threw things in there” with no issues – we leaned into our “Rule Follower” tendencies. As John Petersik, I made sure we consulted and tried to adhere to the official Pods packing video for best practices. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially when entrusting all your worldly possessions to a moving container traversing hundreds of miles.

Essential Packing Supplies for a Seamless Move

  • As promised during our podcast discussion, for anyone facing a move or the daunting task of packing in the near future, here is a curated list of supplies that proved invaluable to us. These tools not only simplified the process but also offered crucial protection for our belongings:
    • These $16 Forearm Forklift straps were an absolute game-changer for lifting heavy furniture. With these ergonomic straps, we were able to safely and efficiently move every last bulky item ourselves, saving us backaches and potential injury. They distribute weight evenly, making heavy lifting feel significantly lighter.
    • For securing our carefully arranged boxes and furniture within the PODS container, these $10 ratchet straps were indispensable. They ensured everything remained firmly in place, preventing any unwanted shifting or tumbling during transit, which was a key factor in avoiding those “horror stories” we heard.
    • To protect our furniture from scratches, dings, and chafing during its rumble down the road for over 12 hours, we utilized a 12-pack of moving blankets. We ended up using two packs in total, meticulously wrapping each piece to provide a soft, protective cushion against the bumps and vibrations of the journey.
    • We relied on moving boxes from Home Depot, which we conveniently acquired via curbside pickup. We found the small and medium-sized boxes to be the most versatile and helpful for organizing smaller items and books, though a few large ones were essential for awkward items like lampshades and lightweight linens.
    • Finally, this furniture stretch wrap proved to be a multi-functional hero. It not only held our moving blankets securely in place around furniture but also kept bubble wrap taut around fragile items. Ingeniously, it even helped us convert random baskets and bins without lids into makeshift, secure boxes by simply filling them up and wrapping the stretch film tightly around the top to contain the contents.

Decoding the “Adult” Kitchen: Practicality vs. Perfection

The concept of an “adult” kitchen often conjures images of pristine countertops, high-end appliances, and perfectly curated aesthetics. However, our recent exploration into this topic, prompted by an intriguing article, revealed a more nuanced perspective that challenges conventional wisdom. It begs the question: is an “adult” kitchen truly defined by luxury, or by functionality and personal resonance?

  • This week, Sherry put my knowledge to the test with a quiz based on an article from The Kitchn. If you’re curious to dive deeper into the professional perspective, you can read the entire piece: 5 Things Every “Adult” Kitchen Has, According To These Pros. It’s a fascinating read, though it’s important to remember our stance: we firmly believe that an “adult” kitchen doesn’t *have* to conform to any specific list of items. True adulting in the kitchen is about creating a space that works for you, reflects your style, and supports your lifestyle – whether that includes a top-tier espresso machine or simply a reliable cutting board.

  • Speaking of essential kitchen items, we can’t recommend this cutting board / charcuterie board from Ikea enough! It’s the very same one we used in both duplex kitchens, and you can spot it leaning on the right side of the photo above. For just $20, you get an incredibly generously sized (read: HUGE!) acacia wood board that’s perfect for everything from meal prep to hosting impressive charcuterie spreads. It’s a prime example of how practicality and style can perfectly converge in an “adult” kitchen without breaking the bank.

Our Evolving Renovation Strategy: From Minimalist Hopes to Phased Transformation

Our expectations for the Florida house renovation have swung through four distinct phases, a testament to the unpredictable nature of home buying and the unique challenges of managing a renovation from afar. What started as a hope for minimal intervention quickly shifted as we faced the realities of our new property, ultimately leading us to a strategic phased approach that balances immediate livability with long-term vision.

  • For those who haven’t yet embarked on the visual journey of our Florida house, last week’s post featuring all of the before photos of our Florida House is a must-see. Coupled with the accompanying video tour, it vividly illustrates why our initial plan to purchase a house requiring minimal renovation quickly dissipated. The reality of missing floorboards and a broken-down bathroom certainly presented a stark contrast to our earlier, more optimistic outlook!
  • Understanding the true scale and potential of a new home can be challenging without furniture to provide context. If you missed this series of Instagram stories, we received an overwhelming amount of feedback confirming its usefulness. It offered crucial insights into our evolving plans and provided a much clearer grasp of the actual room dimensions in our new house, helping bridge the gap between imagination and reality.

  • Despite the back-and-forth between various approaches to tackling this renovation remotely, we are genuinely thrilled with the strategy we’ve ultimately adopted. Our current plan ensures that we will have a comfortable and entirely livable space upon our arrival, providing a much-needed foundation. However, this is just the beginning; there remains plenty to do once we’re physically settled in. First on our comprehensive list of post-move projects is the phase one renovation of our existing, mauve-countered kitchen, setting the stage for a truly personalized home.

Beyond the Reno: What We’re Currently Exploring

Even amidst the whirlwind of moving and renovation planning, we always make time for discovery and learning. This section highlights a recent find that has captured our attention, offering a delightful escape and enriching our daily routine.

  • We’re currently thoroughly enjoying The 50 States (you can also find it locally), a beautifully illustrated book that my son and I have made a nightly ritual. We’ve steadily progressed through its pages, currently having made it all the way to Hawaii on our journey of exploring one state spread per evening. The illustrations are captivating, and the facts are engaging for both kids and adults. I also recently discovered there’s an accompanying Activity Book (here’s where you can buy it locally), which we’re excited to explore next!
