From Drab to Dreamy: Our Laundry Room Makeover

Transform Your Laundry Room: A DIY Makeover Guide for Small Spaces

Every home has those overlooked corners, and for many, the laundry room often falls into this category. Traditionally a purely functional space, it can easily become a neglected area, lacking personality or efficient design. However, with a little creativity, strategic planning, and some good old-fashioned DIY spirit, even the smallest utility room can be transformed into a bright, inviting, and highly functional extension of your home. We recently embarked on such a journey, completing a comprehensive overhaul of our own laundry room, culminating in the addition of a much-needed unique light fixture and clever shoe storage solutions. With the final touches now in place – and a decision to hold off on a window covering for now, opting to frost the window later when our carport transitions into a garage – we’ve officially checked off the last items from our ambitious renovation list.

Our Renovation Journey: Completing the Laundry Room Transformation

Our goal was to create a laundry room that was not only highly functional but also aesthetically pleasing, maximizing every inch of space while staying within a reasonable budget. This project was a testament to how thoughtful design and strategic improvements can drastically alter the feel and utility of a small area. We meticulously planned each step, tackling a variety of tasks from structural improvements to decorative enhancements. Here’s a look at the comprehensive list of completed tasks that brought our vision to life:

  • Ensuring privacy and enhancing natural light, we frosted the side door, a simple yet effective solution for a busy utility space.
  • To optimize space and prevent obstruction, we successfully removed the narrow shelving that was inconveniently blocked by the open door, making the entryway more accessible.
  • Boosting much-needed natural illumination, we efficiently removed the old shutters that previously obstructed light, brightening the entire room.
  • Embracing energy efficiency and modern convenience, we upgraded our laundry appliances by finding a killer deal on new Energy Star front-loading washer and dryer, replacing our old, inefficient stacked top-loaders through a smart Craigslist sale.
  • Addressing aesthetic imperfections, we meticulously caulked a prominent crack in the ceiling, restoring a smooth and refined finish to the overhead space.
  • For a crisp and cohesive look, we transformed the previously odd brown quarter round near the baseboards by painting it a glossy white, seamlessly integrating it with the room’s refreshed palette.
  • Elevating the room’s overall appeal, we meticulously redid all the dinged-up trim in a fresh semi-gloss white, ensuring every detail contributed to a polished finish.
  • Providing the perfect canvas for our decor, we expertly painted the walls, instantly refreshing the room’s atmosphere.
  • Prioritizing safety and efficiency, we replaced our old dryer hose with a safer all-metal alternative, a crucial upgrade for any laundry space.
  • Maximizing storage in a smart way, we designed and installed adjustable built-in shelving in the nook next to the stacked washer and dryer, creating dedicated space for essentials.
  • Giving our cabinetry a new lease on life, we meticulously primed and painted the upper cabinets, brightening the area and providing a clean, updated look.
  • Completing the cabinet transformation, we also replaced the hinges and knobs on those upper cabinets, adding a modern touch to the refreshed storage.
  • A clever solution for both storage and concealment, we smartly hung the ironing board to obscure the giant metal fuse box, turning an eyesore into a functional feature.
  • Addressing daily needs right at the entryway, we added functional storage specifically for shoes near the door, keeping clutter at bay.
  • Adding a custom touch that truly brightens the room, we proudly completed our homemade light fixture, a unique centerpiece that radiates warmth.
  • While a traditional window treatment was considered, we opted for a long-term plan to simply frost the window when we eventually convert the carport into a garage, a practical solution for future privacy.
  • Finally, to maintain a cheerful atmosphere and add essential organization, we strategically hung some art and incorporated a discreet storage solution for Burger’s leash.

Brightening the Space: The Strategic Placement of a Mirror

With most of the heavy lifting done, our focus shifted to decorating and maximizing the natural light in the room – a crucial aspect for any small, functional space, especially one without a window. We explored numerous ideas for the large blank wall next to the door, a prime location that required a piece that was both visually impactful and practical. Ultimately, the solution came in the form of a mirror, a simple yet powerful element for amplifying light and creating an illusion of greater space. Our lucky find was an awesome $10 mirror, discovered at a neighborhood yard sale just a few weeks prior. This serendipitous acquisition was made at the same sale where we found our charming twig & berry art, leading to a memorable journey home, laden with two large frames and a heavy mirror, all while navigating a stroller and our chihuahua. That’s just how we roll with our DIY adventures!

This particular mirror proved perfect for the big blank wall. Its relatively flat profile was essential, as anything too bulky would risk being slammed by the adjacent door. This consideration was precisely why we had removed the narrow open shelving left by the previous owners and frosted that side door for privacy – functionality and safety are always paramount in our design choices.

DIY Mirror Hanging: A Step-by-Step Guide for Precision

While the mirror itself was perfect, hanging it presented a unique challenge. A clear warning label on the back stated: “Do not hang with wire,” complete with an accompanying illustration. This meant the screws in the wall needed to be perfectly aligned with the mirror’s built-in hooks – a task requiring utmost precision to ensure stability and safety. This seemingly simple task demanded a clever DIY approach to get it right on the first try.

Our solution involved a simple yet ingenious paper-tape method. I tore a piece of printer paper in half and taped each piece partially over one of the mirror’s hooks, with the sticky side facing the mirror. The other half of the paper extended out from the sides, with the sticky side facing away from the mirror. Essentially, we gave the mirror temporary “paper wings.” This low-tech approach provided an accurate template for drilling, eliminating guesswork.

DIY mirror hanging technique using paper and tape to mark drill spots precisely

Once the paper wings were secured, I carefully poked a small hole directly through the paper, precisely where the screw needed to go for each hook. This marked the exact points for our pilot holes, ensuring perfect alignment when the mirror was finally installed.

The next step required teamwork. With the mirror carefully held in its desired position – ensuring it was perfectly centered and level – we pressed the exposed, sticky parts of the paper wings firmly against the wall. This created an instant, accurate guide indicating precisely where the screws needed to be placed. This method is incredibly effective for achieving flawless placement, especially for items with rigid hanging mechanisms.

For this precise method, having two people is highly recommended. One person (me) held the mirror steadily in place, while the other (Sherry) stepped back to ensure optimal placement and to confirm it was perfectly level and not “wonky.” After the paper templates were securely taped to the wall, Sherry’s role was crucial in holding down these taped wings as I carefully pulled the mirror away. This ensured the paper templates remained firmly in their correct positions on the wall, preventing any shifting or unsticking during the mirror’s removal. This collaborative effort made the process smooth and accurate.

With our guide holes perfectly marked, we quickly drilled small pilot holes through the paper templates. Once the paper wings were removed from the wall, heavy-duty anchors and screws were installed in their place on each side. These anchors are essential for securely supporting the weight of a substantial mirror, ensuring it remains safely affixed to the wall for years to come.

To our pleasant surprise, the method worked flawlessly, and the mirror was hanging perfectly in no time. This was a total shocker, as one often expects DIY projects to present unforeseen challenges. A quick tip for any DIY enthusiast: never go into a project expecting it to work on the first try. Setting low expectations can lead to delightful surprises, rather than frustrating disappointments. I went into this expecting it to take a “fortnight” – a mindset that resulted in a “pleasantly surprised John” when it came together so smoothly.

Embracing Originality: The Mirror’s Finish Dilemma

Regarding the mirror’s finish, Sherry and I remain a bit undecided. Our initial instinct, true to our past projects, was to paint the frame white, or perhaps an Oil-Rubbed Bronze (ORB), or even the deep teal color from our built-ins. However, lately, we’ve found ourselves increasingly appreciating a more eclectic mix of finishes and textures in our home decor. There’s a growing charm in letting “old pieces” contribute to a collected, layered feel in a room without immediately resorting to a new coat of paint. This, I know, is another surprising turn for us! So, for the time being, we’re embracing the mirror’s existing crackled gold finish. It adds a touch of vintage character and warmth. While we love it now, we’re keeping an open mind that down the line, especially when we eventually upgrade to stainless steel appliances in the adjoined kitchen, the gold might clash, calling for a paint job. We’ll certainly keep you posted on any future decisions!

Beyond Function: Infusing Personality and Warmth

Our random $10 yard sale mirror has proven to be an absolutely AWESOME addition to the laundry room, far exceeding its humble price tag. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, it serves multiple practical functions. Not only does it offer that crucial last glance before heading out the door, but it also masterfully reflects a significant amount of additional light into our windowless kitchen, truly brightening an otherwise dark area. Furthermore, it creates a visual expansion of the laundry room itself, effectively “doubling” the perceived space when viewed from the dryer, making the room feel much larger and more open. This strategic placement demonstrates how a simple decorative element can have a profound impact on both the functionality and feel of a small space.

Personal Touches: Family Photos and Meaningful Decor

But the mirror isn’t our only new addition to the laundry room walls. We’ve also incorporated two textured frames, originally from the Pottery Barn Outlet a few years back, which previously adorned our old office slash guest room. We decided these frames would be perfect for proudly displaying some of our favorite family pictures above our new shoe cabinet. For Burger’s leash, we found a simple, elegant solution by tucking it into a white bowl from the kitchen – functional yet aesthetically pleasing. And speaking of delightful finds, that charming pink vase, a $7 sale score from Target, was actually my discovery! I recommended it to Sherry because its colors perfectly echoed those in our ironing board cover. Who knew I had such an eye for coordinating decor? This laundry room project is evidently helping me branch out and discover new facets of my design sensibility!

Returning to the art, I must give credit to my mom for inspiring the framed family pictures. Growing up, our laundry room always featured a warm collage of family photos, and I cherished looking at them. It’s so easy for functional spaces like laundry rooms to become just that – functional – causing us to overlook the opportunity to infuse them with something personal and heartfelt. To put it in less “decorating show host” terms: it certainly doesn’t hurt to gaze upon a cute baby while, say, washing diapers for that very same cute baby! And the rest of the family photos don’t hurt my eyes either; they bring a daily dose of joy to an otherwise routine space.

The top picture is a beautiful family portrait, proudly featuring Burger, captured during our recent Outer Banks trip last month. The bottom photograph was artfully snapped by Katie Bower during our last visit to her in Georgia. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the subtle yellows in both pictures accidentally complement the room’s color scheme wonderfully. Even if they clashed, we’d likely still display them, as they are cherished favorites. Adjacent to the top frame hangs a charming little iron bee – a nod to our undeniable affection for bees, which we picked up during a memorable thrifting adventure in Delaware. And once again, showcasing our rebellious streak, we chose to leave it in its original state, despite having contemplated painting it white in the past. This, dear readers, is our form of DIY defiance! Yes, we’re bad. Bad to the bone… in the best possible way, of course!

Details of the laundry room decor, showcasing a mix of personal items and thrifting finds

It’s quite remarkable to realize how much character and history this single wall holds, with items collected from various states! The family pictures were taken in North Carolina and Georgia, the frames were purchased in South Carolina, and the iron bee hook was a lucky find in Delaware. Interestingly, the miscellaneous keys hanging nearby are for local PO Boxes and family members’ homes, which somewhat breaks our cross-country streak, but adds another layer of personal connection. Oh well, it’s the story behind each item that truly matters!

The Grand Reveal: From Drab to Fab Laundry Room

And with that, fine ladies and gentlemen, we are officially declaring the laundry room COMPLETE… for now, at least! This project represents a significant milestone for us, as it’s truly the first room where we’ve achieved such a comprehensive transformation. Perhaps its compact size, no bigger than a bathroom stall, made it an ideal candidate for a focused makeover. Nevertheless, this project perfectly embodies our philosophy of tackling whole-house makeovers one tiny, manageable step at a time. The satisfaction of seeing this often-neglected space evolve from its original, purely utilitarian state into a bright, functional, and personalized area is truly immense. Budget-Friendly Brilliance: Our Laundry Room Investment

For all you number crunchers and budget-conscious DIY enthusiasts out there, transparency is key! Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of all the costs associated with the updates and enhancements we’ve made in our laundry room over the past few weeks. We believe in showing that significant transformations don’t always require a hefty price tag, especially with smart shopping and a DIY mindset.

Transparent Cost Breakdown: Achieving Style on a Budget

  • New Energy Star front-loading washer/dryer: $388 (A fantastic deal! The original cost was $638, but we smartly offset this by selling our old set on Craigslist for $250, showcasing the power of strategic selling).
  • Frosting film (Home Depot): $18 (A low-cost solution for privacy and diffused light).
  • Paint and caulk: $0 (Already owned from previous projects, demonstrating cost savings through resourcefulness).
  • Built-in shelves (supplies from Lowe’s & Home Depot): $74 (Custom storage at a fraction of the cost of pre-made units).
  • Ironing board cover (Etsy): $24 (Adding a personal touch and vibrant color).
  • Ironing board hooks (Lowe’s): $12 (Practical hardware for organized storage).
  • Cabinet knobs (Hobby Lobby): $8 (Small details that make a big impact on aesthetics).
  • Shoe cabinets (Ikea): $38 (Efficient and sleek storage for entryway clutter).
  • Clothespin light fixture (homemade here): $34 (A truly unique, custom lighting solution that’s a conversation starter).
  • Mirror (yard sale): $10 (Our shining example of how thrifting can yield incredible finds).
  • Family photos (CVS): $1 (Inexpensive way to print cherished memories).
  • Frames (Pottery Barn Outlet): $0 (Already owned, repurposed from another room).
  • Iron fly hook (thrift store): $0 (A charming, repurposed accent that adds character).
  • Laundry basket (Target): $0 (Already owned).
  • Pink vase (Target): $7 (A pop of color found on sale, aligning with our decor).
  • Other accessories like bowls & baskets: $0 (Already owned, showcasing sustainable decorating).
  • TOTAL PROJECT COST: $624*

* This total is particularly thrilling considering our new front-loading washer & dryer alone were originally priced at $1198 before our smart selling strategy! This highlights the significant savings achieved through thoughtful planning and execution.

It’s important to clarify our budgeting philosophy: we typically don’t factor in the cost of items we have leftover from previous projects or already own, as these expenses are usually accounted for in other budget breakdowns. For instance, the wall paint used here was already included in our kitchen painting budget, so re-listing it as “$20 again” would constitute double-counting. However, based on valuable feedback from our readers who suggested it might be helpful for those starting from scratch, here’s an estimated cost for those “already owned” items:

  • Approximately $25 for some caulk & a quart of paint.
  • Around $25 for frames & various accessories.
  • An estimated $3 for the plastic laundry basket.
  • And about $5 for the charming iron bee hook we discovered thrifting.

Adding these estimated costs for new purchases brings the grand total for someone buying everything from scratch to approximately $682. This still represents an incredible value for such a comprehensive and impactful laundry room transformation!

Reflections on a Successful Project

Three cheers for appliance deals, ingenious DIY built-ins, and the creative repurposing of ironing board covers as art! Cheers also to the unique finds from thrift store hooks, the charming glow of clothespin chandeliers, and all the other wonderfully odd design decisions we made for our tiny laundry room. This project truly celebrates resourcefulness, personal style, and the immense satisfaction of transforming an overlooked space into a functional and delightful area.

Narrow laundry room space captured to emphasize its compact size and efficient design

And so, our extensive laundry room makeover officially concludes! We’re currently enjoying “diaper-washing-day” a little too much, finding unexpected joy in this newly invigorated space. Even my mom and dad saw our homemade clothespin light fixture in person and proclaimed it “the coolest thing we’ve ever made besides Clara,” which, as you can imagine, left us feeling a bit awkward and blushy – but definitely proud! Have you embarked on any laundry room revamps lately? Or perhaps made any cute babies? Or even tried “owling” on a windowsill? Apparently, owling is the new planking – just a little something to ponder as you enjoy your newly organized and beautiful home!
