Secondhand Cabinets, Stunning Kitchens

Transforming Your Kitchen on a Budget: Our Thrilling ReStore Cabinet Hunt

Embarking on a kitchen renovation can be a daunting, and often expensive, endeavor. But what if you could achieve your dream kitchen without breaking the bank? We believe in smart, sustainable, and budget-friendly home improvements, and our latest project is a testament to that philosophy. While the days of scoring $1 cabinets (like our incredible find for the office built-ins) seemed like a distant memory, our unwavering spirit of discovery led us straight to the Habitat For Humanity ReStore. Our mission: to find four crucial cabinets to construct our new kitchen peninsula and seamlessly integrate our microwave and fridge into a stylish, functional built-in unit. We already had a head start, planning to reuse the sturdy 36-inch cabinet that once occupied the space where our stove now proudly sits, a strategic move that saved us significant money right off the bat. The good news? Our persistent hunt yielded fantastic results – we found three out of the four cabinets we needed, and the total spent was an astonishing $90!

The Unbeatable Value of Habitat for Humanity ReStore Finds

For those unfamiliar, Habitat for Humanity ReStores are non-profit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, home accessories, building materials, and appliances at a fraction of the retail price. Shopping at ReStore is not just about saving money; it’s a commitment to sustainability, reducing waste, and supporting Habitat for Humanity’s mission to build affordable homes in our communities. It’s a treasure trove for DIY enthusiasts, renovators on a budget, and anyone looking to add unique character to their home. Each visit is an adventure, a chance to unearth hidden gems that can transform a space.

Newly purchased secondhand cabinets from Habitat ReStore

Our recent haul perfectly illustrates the unparalleled value. We snagged a robust corner base cabinet, the anchor for our new peninsula, for just $50. Complementing this, we found two essential upper cabinets: one perfectly sized for above the fridge and another slightly taller one, ideal for over the microwave, each priced at an incredible $19. To truly appreciate the scale of these savings, consider what these same cabinets would cost new. A quick check at major retailers like Home Depot or Lowe’s for comparable stock, off-the-shelf cabinets would have set us back approximately $219 for the corner base, $96 for the standard upper, and $89 for the taller upper. That’s a grand total of $404! Our ReStore adventure saved us a substantial $314, proving that savvy shopping and a little elbow grease can make a massive difference in your renovation budget. This approach made even more sense for us, knowing we planned to scrap the existing cabinet doors anyway, prioritizing the solid frames.

Overcoming the Door Dilemma: Crafting Cohesion from Mismatched Finds

One common challenge when sourcing secondhand cabinets is the doors. Naturally, our newly acquired cabinets came with doors that didn’t match our existing 30-year-old kitchen cabinetry. Despite diligently hunting for new or secondhand doors that would be a perfect fit, nothing quite aligned with our specific aesthetic or dimensions. However, this wasn’t a setback, but rather an opportunity for creative customization. The true value lies in the solid oak cabinet frames, which we acquired for an absolute steal. Once these frames are all meticulously prepped and painted a fresh, uniform white, and fitted with either brand-new doors or retrofitted matching doors from other existing cabinets we’re repurposing, no one will ever guess their humble origins from the ReStore. This strategy allows us to achieve a cohesive, bespoke look without the premium price tag of custom-built units or the expense of entirely new stock cabinets.

The Logistics of Hauling Home Happiness: A Team Effort

Acquiring large items like kitchen cabinets often comes with its own set of logistical hurdles. While we managed to fit two of the three cabinets into our car’s trunk on the initial trip, the giant corner cabinet proved a bit more challenging. Thankfully, our local ReStore has a customer-friendly policy of holding items for up to seven days. This flexibility allowed us to make a strategic return trip a few days later, armed with a much larger vehicle generously borrowed from John’s sister. This kind of community support and smart planning is often an unsung hero in many DIY projects, turning potential frustrations into manageable tasks and reminding us that home renovation is often a collaborative effort, even if it’s just borrowing a bigger car!

The Renovation Zone: Organized Chaos and Future Dreams

Now, all our new acquisitions are safely home. While they haven’t yet found their permanent places in the kitchen, they’ve temporarily joined the assembly of other renovation components. Our carport and sunroom have officially become the designated “holding areas,” bustling with a mix of old cabinets and doors that have been removed, alongside the exciting new pieces waiting for their turn. This organized chaos is a familiar sight in any active renovation, a temporary state of transition that signifies progress and anticipation. The air in the sunroom, currently brimming with woodworking projects, carries the earthy, comforting scent of wood – a far cry from unpleasant odors, actually quite a pleasant aroma that signifies creativity and transformation. We’re eager to share the next milestone: the reveal of our freshly built-in fridge, which we anticipate happening in just a few days. Stay tuned!

Beyond the Cabinets: A Spooktacular Halloween Interlude!

But wait – amidst the sawdust and renovation plans, there’s always time for a little bit of magic, especially when it’s Halloween! We couldn’t possibly let you leave without sharing a glimpse into our festive family celebrations and the sheer delight of our little ones in their adorable costumes. This year, we’re proud to introduce you to our charming duo: the ever-so-playful Mrs. Monkey and her bewildered companion, Mr. Banana!

Meet Our Adorable Halloween Crew: Mrs. Monkey & Mr. Banana

Our sweet Clara absolutely reveled in her role as Mrs. Monkey, delighting everyone with her enthusiastic “ooh ooh ah ah” sounds and comical arm waves. Her energy was infectious, radiating pure joy and capturing the playful spirit of the holiday. Burger, on the other hand, was the epitome of dignified embarrassment as Mr. Banana. The moment that vibrant yellow “hat” part of his costume was placed on his head, he simply slumped down, his eyes half-closed, conveying a silent, yet powerful, message: “This is not okay.” We quickly understood his plight, and the poor guy was liberated from his peel-shaped prison within minutes of this impromptu photoshoot. As a reward for his good sportsmanship, we promptly gave the boy a bone – though, in a charming twist, it was his generous monkey friend who actually handed it over. She truly is a very thoughtful chimpanzee indeed!

A Lion, Candy Corn, and More Family Fun

The Halloween fun extended beyond our immediate family! Clara’s cousin Emanuel, who was celebrating his second birthday around this time, joined in the festivities. He transformed into a ferocious, albeit adorable, lion, whose primary request throughout the entire photoshoot was a steady supply of candy corn. His dedication to his character and his sweet tooth were utterly hilarious and added another layer of memorable moments to our holiday. These traditions, big and small, are what truly weave the fabric of family memories, creating stories we’ll recount for years to come. We love looking back at the clever and cute combinations we’ve come up with, like one particularly heartwarming pairing from last year.

Of course, while our banana and monkey duo holds a special place in our hearts, it might not quite surpass the undeniable cuteness of an especially charming combo we featured last year. It’s always fun to see how the costumes evolve and the personalities shine through each year.
