What’s New: The Great Shed Transformation & Beach House Progress
Get ready for some exciting updates straight from our beach house! We’re thrilled to give you a sneak peek into the significant patio and shed work currently underway. The transformation is truly something to behold, promising to redefine the outdoor living experience at our coastal retreat. While the duplex side is still a tiny bit behind schedule, with the sheds just reaching the framing stage, we can already envision a spring filled with productivity, innovative design, and, yes, a whole lot more shed talk! Our goal is to create functional, aesthetically pleasing sheds that not only provide ample storage but also seamlessly integrate with the natural beauty of the beach house environment. This spring is shaping up to be an incredibly exciting time for our exterior projects, and we can’t wait to share every step with you.

This shed journey, however, is not a new tale. Many of you might remember our previous discussions about the small backyard at the beach house, which kicked off back in Episode #84 – way back in February of last year! That episode was pivotal because it’s where we first aired our creative differences and enthusiastic disagreements regarding the shed’s initial design and purpose. It was a lively debate, exploring everything from size constraints to material choices, and it truly set the stage for the extensive planning that followed.
- Those very same show notes are a treasure trove of early planning photos. They offer a fascinating look back, including a stark reminder of what the original, rather unremarkable metal shed looked like when we first acquired the house. It’s a testament to how far we’ve come in reimagining the potential of this space.

Our shed discussions continued into last summer, particularly in Episode #107. Around the time our hot tub was delivered – a project that significantly influenced our backyard layout – we talked about the updated plans and background configurations. It’s safe to say that the vision for the backyard, and indeed the sheds, has evolved several more times since that episode. Each iteration brought new ideas, refined aesthetics, and a deeper understanding of how we wanted the space to function. The hot tub’s arrival necessitated clever space planning, pushing us to think even more creatively about integrating storage and leisure in a compact footprint. This iterative process has been incredibly rewarding, ensuring the final design is both practical and beautiful.
- For those interested in our shed experiences closer to home, you can also learn more about our Richmond shed in this post. We’ve dedicated significant thought to maximizing its potential, and in this accompanying post, we delve into the detailed strategies and clever solutions we implemented to keep it exceptionally organized. From tool storage to seasonal items, a well-organized shed can be a game-changer for any homeowner, transforming clutter into accessible, neatly stored essentials.

Listener Question: Mastering the Art of Wall Personalization
Today’s listener question delves into a topic dear to our hearts: how to strike the perfect balance between displaying cherished family photos and incorporating diverse artwork into your home decor. It’s a question many homeowners grapple with, aiming to create spaces that feel deeply personal without becoming visually overwhelming or monotonous. The key, we’ve found, lies in thoughtful placement, varied presentation, and embracing forms of “personal art” that extend far beyond traditional framed photographs.

- This particular photo shows an older iteration of our bedroom, back when we had a much larger, more extensive family photo gallery wall surrounding the bed. While we loved the memories it held, we eventually found ourselves “quieting the room.” This concept, which we explored further in Episode #111 about Cozy Minimalism, involves intentionally reducing visual clutter and creating a more serene, calming atmosphere. For us, this meant simplifying the gallery wall, allowing each piece to breathe and contribute to a more restful environment.
- As part of that simplification process, some of those beloved family photos found a new home in our guest room, gracefully adorning the wall above Sherry’s sewing and craft desk. This allowed us to keep the memories close while repurposing them in a space where their presence felt fresh and inspiring, adding a touch of warmth for our guests.

When it comes to personal photos, we often gravitate towards candid shots over overly posed ones. In the photo below, you can see a perfect example: our children playing joyfully on some rocks at the beach several years ago. Nobody is looking directly at the camera, and there’s a naturalness to the moment that’s incredibly captivating. Between their accidentally matching striped shirts, the picturesque scenery, and the vivid memory of a wonderful day spent together, it was an undeniable keeper. These unscripted moments often capture the true essence of family life, evoking genuine emotion and a sense of shared experience that posed photos sometimes miss. We find that sprinkling these candid gems throughout our home adds layers of authentic personality and warmth, making every glance a trip down memory lane.

- Beyond static frames, our kitchen offers a dynamic display of family memories thanks to our annual page-a-day calendar. Each day brings a new family photo, turning a simple kitchen task into a delightful moment of reflection. We creatively tape these daily snapshots inside our “mini mudroom” cabinets, which not only keeps them organized but also provides a charming way to personalize each person’s cubby. It’s a small, consistent dose of joy that celebrates our family’s journey throughout the year.

But wall personalization extends far beyond traditional photos. We’ve discovered the incredible charm of hanging actual artwork specifically crafted to represent your family, adding a unique and artistic flair to your home. Imagine a custom piece that tells your family’s story without needing a single photograph.
- Consider a shadowbox filled with little wooden pegs, each meticulously painted to resemble a member of your family, perhaps even including beloved pets. This creates a whimsical, sculptural representation that’s both modern and deeply personal.
- Or perhaps an intricately embroidered portrait of your family, capturing individual personalities through fabric and thread. These pieces often become cherished heirlooms, showcasing artisanal skill alongside family love.
- For those who appreciate fine art, commissioning a painting or sketch of your pet, child, or the entire family offers endless possibilities. From watercolors to contemporary digital art, you can find a style that perfectly complements your home’s aesthetic. We adore a particular portrait of our children, which currently graces our foyer (seen below). It’s a beautiful, artistic interpretation that captures their essence without being a photographic likeness. You can read more about how we commissioned this custom kids portrait and its significance to our home.

- Another fantastic way to infuse personality is by showcasing actual kid artwork. We took one of our children’s adorable drawings and had it blown up into a large-scale print for our bonus room. This simple act transformed a small drawing into a significant, eye-catching piece with a deeply personal touch. The specific piece we chose was a hilariously imaginative “recipe” for cupcakes that, as the text humorously notes, “you can’t expect to make successful cupcakes following the recipe.” Yet, every time we read it, it brings a genuine smile to our faces. It’s a constant reminder of their creativity and humor, proving that personal art doesn’t always have to be perfect; sometimes, its charm lies in its authenticity and the story it tells. It’s also an excellent way to celebrate your children’s budding artistic talents and integrate their world into your home decor in a sophisticated yet playful manner.

- For those eager to explore even more creative avenues for celebrating family with homemade or custom art from Etsy, we promised a few more leads! These curated options are sure to spark inspiration. Sherry, for instance, is absolutely captivated by these artistic renditions of boots – perhaps a nod to her adventurous spirit or a sentimental connection to family excursions. And for those with a playful side, you know I can’t get enough of the idea of a custom Simpsons-style family portrait! Imagine your entire family immortalized in the iconic yellow style – it’s a wonderfully quirky and memorable way to showcase your family’s personality and shared sense of humor. These kinds of custom pieces truly make a statement and provide endless conversation starters.
We’re Digging: Rainbows, Joy, and Mind-Bending Television
This week, we’re sharing some delightful discoveries that have brought unexpected joy and entertainment into our lives. From radiant home accessories to captivating TV series, these are the things we’re truly “digging” right now.
- Below, you can witness my new obsession in action: crystals! Yes, ME, John Petersik, has officially jumped on the crystal train. Although, for the skeptics, I suppose I can simply refer to them as my “glass window prisms.” I initially ordered two sets of these, and they have been an absolute triumph. The sheer delight they bring has been so significant that we’re already planning to get a few more for the beach house.
- We’re still experimenting with the optimal placement to achieve maximum light reflection, but the one currently in our kitchen window has quickly become a family favorite. Every morning, as the sun rises, it splashes vibrant rainbows across our cabinets, extending all the way to the far wall where our shoe cubbies are. It’s a magical daily occurrence that provides such a fun and unexpected pick-me-up as everyone prepares for the day. This simple addition has truly transformed our morning routine, injecting a dose of playful beauty into everyday life and reminding us to find joy in the smallest details.

- As I mentioned during the podcast, my unexpected foray into the world of prisms was inspired by reading the insightful book, Joyful: The Surprising Power of Ordinary Things to Create Extraordinary Happiness. Sherry had raved about this book in Episode #130, and its exploration of how our environments can be designed to enhance happiness truly resonated with me. The book provided the philosophical nudge I needed to embrace something as simple yet impactful as these light-catching crystals, proving that sometimes, the smallest changes can yield the biggest smiles.
- Lastly, for those looking for a gripping and unique television experience, I must recommend the Netflix show, “Russian Doll.” Here’s a link to the trailer for Russian Doll (a fair warning: it’s definitely not kid-friendly, and the strong language begins almost immediately). This show, which Sherry and I recently binged, is an absolute rollercoaster of emotions and genres. It’s funny, weird, intense, genuinely scary at times, and incredibly refreshing all at once. The narrative is clever and engaging, pulling you into its unique premise from the very first episode. Plus, each of the 8 episodes clocks in at a super convenient 30 minutes, making it the perfect quick, low-commitment binge-watch for anyone looking for something thought-provoking and entertaining without requiring a massive time investment. It’s a show that stays with you long after the credits roll.
