What to Leave in a Note for Future Homeowners

We created a small time capsule to leave behind, and it was more fun than packing. Our hope is that someone discovers it decades from now — ideally after flying cars and other futuristic trappings exist — since it would be a bit of a letdown if the new owners find it the day they move in. For that reason we hid it carefully. So carefully, in fact, that it might never be found. We can’t reveal the location because that would spoil the surprise, but think of it as more “inside the walls” than “taped under the sink.”

The capsule contained a handwritten letter and a single sheet with two photos: one of me, John, and Clara from this year, and one from our backyard wedding in 2007. Each photo was labeled with the date and event or our names. Here’s the text of the letter:

Dear finder of this note,

We lived in this house from May 2006 to December 2010. Our names are John and Sherry Petersik. We moved in engaged at 25 and left as a family of four — we got married, adopted a puppy, and welcomed a daughter during our time here. We were married in the backyard on July 7, 2007 in front of friends and family. This was our first house, and we loved it so much that getting married here felt right.

We began an online blog about our life and renovations here in 2007 called younghouselove.com. If we were still blogging when you find this, you might be able to find our posts online. We made many changes in this house, from gutting and renovating the kitchen and bathrooms to paving the driveway and adding a cobblestone patio in the backyard. We also closed off a doorway that once led from the kitchen into the adjacent room, which had been the formal dining room, to create a true third bedroom — the nursery for our daughter Clara.

We hope you enjoy living here as much as we did.

— xoxo, Sherry, John, Baby Clara & Burger the chihuahua

The “dear finder of this note” line always makes me smile — that was John’s touch. I wonder who will find it, and when. Will they rush over to a friend’s house to show it off? Only time will tell. Or will it? (Cue the ominous duh-duh-duhhhhhhhh sound effect.)
