Our Home’s Exterior Makeover: Siding Color and Trim Choices

Transforming Our Home’s Exterior: A Journey from Rot to Radiant Curb Appeal

Our home, while full of potential, presented a series of significant challenges upon purchase. Beyond the extensive interior blue and mauve palette that demanded our attention, the exterior trim and siding were in dire need of a complete overhaul. We meticulously cataloged four major renovation priorities when we bought the house: a new roof, a furnace replacement, addressing several problematic trees, and finally, the colossal task of repairing extensive rotting siding and trim, culminating in a fresh, full-house paint job. Knowing about these issues upfront, particularly the fact that the roof and furnace didn’t financially cripple us, certainly helped soften the initial shock. But before we dive into the vibrant new life of our home, let’s take a closer look at the “soft” reality of our deteriorating siding.

The damage was more than just cosmetic; this particular hole in the siding was alarmingly large, offering an unwelcome invitation to small critters like bats or mice. A moment of collective “ewww” is perfectly understandable here, as the structural integrity and pest control aspects became immediate concerns.

Damaged wood trim showing signs of rot and decay

Numerous sections of our wood trim and siding had succumbed to such severe rot that they were beyond repair, necessitating complete replacement. The remaining healthy portions were in desperate need of thorough cleaning, meticulous scraping, a protective priming coat, and two fresh layers of paint to prevent further decay and restore their former glory. Considering the widespread nature of the rot, the sheer scale of the project, and the perilous heights involved, we quickly realized this was a job best entrusted to seasoned professionals. We diligently obtained four detailed estimates and ultimately selected CertaPro Painters, a local chain, whose team instilled the greatest confidence in their ability to deliver exceptional results. Their reputation was further bolstered by a strong recommendation from a neighbor and a close friend, which undoubtedly influenced our decision. Their remarkable flexibility also allowed us to save a significant sum – an extra $1,000 – by undertaking certain tasks ourselves, a strategy we’ll elaborate on shortly.

Choosing the Perfect Palette: A Deep Dive into Exterior Color Selection

With the contractor chosen, the exciting, yet challenging, phase of color selection began. Our vision for the house involved distinct colors for the trim and siding, aiming to add greater dimension and visual interest to the exterior. While the existing cream-on-cream scheme wasn’t overtly offensive, we were confident that other possibilities would elevate the home’s aesthetic. Our research involved numerous strolls through the neighborhood, meticulously observing other brick colonial homes to gather inspiration and identify appealing color combinations. This thorough “house-gawking” exercise equipped us with fresh perspectives before we returned home to pore over our extensive paint deck.

Paint swatches being considered for exterior house colors

We gravitated towards a “putty” color for the siding – a sophisticated blend that wasn’t too brown and not overly gray, striking a perfect neutral balance. This tone felt inherently “related” to the brick, creating a cohesive and harmonious look. We deliberated extensively between two shades marked with red arrows on our swatch, eventually opting for the lighter option due to concerns that the darker one might appear too gloomy for such a large surface area. For the windowsills and trim, we selected a crisp white tone, carefully chosen to be neither too yellow nor too blue, ensuring a clean and timeless contrast.

Spoiler alert, and a valuable lesson learned: we initially chose the wrong color for the siding. Thankfully, this misstep was caught early, just as the first coat was being applied. The painters, understanding our concern, were incredibly accommodating and happily applied the darker tone for the second coat. This proved to be an excellent solution, as the slight difference in shade ensured superb coverage and a truly rich finish. This incident underscored a crucial tip for exterior painting: the intensity of natural light can drastically alter how a color appears. A shade that seems perfect on a small swatch might look completely washed out on a large exterior surface. Always consider going a shade darker than your initial instinct for exterior projects. The final choice, now confidently applied, delivered a stunning and deeply satisfying aesthetic. Pretty, right?

Final exterior paint color swatch for house siding

The updated siding color delivers a wonderfully rich and sophisticated look. Given the visually “weighty” nature of our brick, this darker putty tone creates an ideal balance, grounding the entire facade. The initially chosen lighter color, when applied to the house, appeared significantly washed out, almost resembling a soft white or a very pale cream, diminishing the intended contrast and dimension. Thus, a potential aesthetic disaster was skillfully averted, demonstrating the importance of on-site color verification and flexibility during the painting process.

Observe the triangular pediment above the portico in the pre-final coat stages; it appears as a soft, almost ethereal white. This was just one shade lighter on the swatch but translated to nearly three shades lighter once exposed to direct sunlight on the house! The subsequent application of the final, darker color by the painting crew, as seen with Danny in action, truly made the white trim pop while simultaneously harmonizing with the robust brick and the dark shutters behind it. The transformation was dramatic and entirely worthwhile.

The Transformation Process: A Detailed Look at Exterior Renovation

Witnessing the painting process unfold was surprisingly engaging, though we certainly didn’t envy the crew spending five days atop those towering ladders in sweltering 90-degree-plus temperatures. The meticulous transformation began with a thorough power-washing of the entire house, ensuring a clean surface free of grime and loose debris. Following this, the team painstakingly scraped all the existing loose paint from the trim and siding. Any areas of raw wood, exposed either by scraping or after rot repair, received a critical coat of primer to ensure optimal paint adhesion and long-term durability. Finally, every surface was expertly painted: two robust coats for the siding and trim, and a single coat around the windows, transitioning seamlessly from cream to our chosen crisp white. Throughout this process, any wood or siding deemed irreparable due to rot was precisely cut out and replaced with new, sound material. In total, approximately 20 pieces of rotten siding and trim were replaced, breaking down the project into a comprehensive schedule: one day for power washing, two days dedicated to intensive rot repair and scraping, and two final days for priming and painting. This systematic approach guaranteed a lasting and beautiful finish.

For the paint, the professionals exclusively used Duration by Sherwin Williams, highly commending its superior quality for exterior applications. They highlighted its exceptional thickness and coverage, a testament to its durability and protective capabilities. We now rest easy knowing our home’s exterior is fortified against the elements, preventing a swift return to the sad, rotten state we encountered. The specific colors chosen for this stunning transformation were Sherwin Williams Snowbound for the pristine white trim and Anonymous for the sophisticated putty-colored siding. These choices have imbued our home with a fresh, contemporary feel while respecting its classic architectural lines.

The Stunning Reveal: Before & After Curb Appeal Transformation

We are absolutely thrilled with the outcome of this extensive exterior renovation. The transformation is so profound that we’ll never again doubt the seasoned advice of house painting experts who advocate for choosing a shade darker than initially perceived for exterior applications, acknowledging how natural light tends to wash out colors. It was truly astonishing how a swatch that appeared clearly gray-brown indoors, or even on a small outdoor sample, looked almost white once applied to the vast expanse of the house. Three cheers for second chances and the wisdom of experience! Our gratitude for this successful project is immense.

To truly appreciate the dramatic improvement, let’s revisit what the house looked like when we first acquired it:

And now, a closer look at its current, revitalized state. The difference is remarkable, wouldn’t you agree? The new colors add immense dimension and character, a significant departure from the overwhelming brown tones of yesteryear.

While the new roof was undoubtedly a game-changer in terms of structural integrity and overall aesthetic, the fresh paint job represents an equally noticeable and impactful upgrade to our home’s curb appeal. Even subtle details, like the crisp white trim around the windows and the newly painted porch railing, contribute to a sense of freshness and welcoming charm from the street. It’s one of those delightful transformations where, as we drive down our street and approach home, we still find ourselves doing a double-take, our brains momentarily catching up with the stunning new reality of our house’s exterior.

Let’s turn our attention to the back of the house. Previously, the siding on the upper right section appeared disproportionately light and unbalanced against the brick, creating a somewhat disjointed visual (apologies for the less-than-ideal choppy photo!).

Now, with the new color scheme, the back of the house feels far more evenly weighted and integrated. The siding no longer visually “sticks out” but instead blends harmoniously with the overall structure, creating a cohesive and polished look.

Here’s a closer shot illustrating how the sunroom appeared when it was uniformly cream, before its transformation.

Post-renovation, the sunroom now possesses a crisper, more defined aesthetic. The darker storm windows on the main house tie in beautifully with the rich, deep tones of the brick and the new putty color of the siding. This thoughtful integration ensures the sunroom feels less like an attached “pop-out” and more like an integral, well-designed extension of the home, enhancing its overall architectural unity.

Navigating Costs and Smart DIY Savings for Exterior Renovations

Understanding the cost of rot repair and exterior house painting is crucial for any homeowner embarking on such a project. These costs can fluctuate significantly based on several factors: your geographical location, the extent of rot damage, the type of house (e.g., predominantly brick or all siding), and the overall size of your property. While our precise receipt is currently lost in the depths of our “moving chaos piles” (affectionately dubbed the Bermuda Triangle), our recollection suggests that the wood rot repair alone was approximately $1,000, with the extensive scraping and painting exceeding $2,000. Update: A quick memory jog reminded us that we received a 10% discount because John is a member of ACAC, so we highly recommend local residents getting an estimate to present their membership card if applicable!

Writing that check certainly felt like another one of those “bleeding money” moments that often accompany significant home improvements. However, we managed to reduce their original estimate by a substantial $1,000 by proactively offering to tackle some of the easier-to-reach areas ourselves – tasks we were confident we could execute well. This brings us to a valuable tip for anyone who enjoys a hands-on approach while wisely delegating complex or hazardous jobs to the experts: break down the entire project in your mind and identify segments you can confidently “bite off.” We enthusiastically proposed, “Hey, we’ll gladly paint these three areas ourselves!” These areas included: the garage doors (for which we envision a tone slightly darker than the main siding to add depth)…

…the interior walls, trim, and ceiling of the sunroom (an area often quoted separately by contractors as it’s technically an outdoor room), and finally, the front door and its elegant sidelights.

This strategic DIY approach not only saved us a cool grand but also provided us with additional time to thoughtfully consider the perfect color palettes for these specific areas. Predictably, I’m most excited about choosing a vibrant new color for the front door. Nothing is off-limits; seriously, every swatch in the rainbow is currently a contender, promising a truly personalized touch to our home’s entrance.

Minor Mishaps and the Enduring Spirit of Home Improvement

In the grand scheme of things, one minor casualty did occur, tangentially related to the roof project: we accidentally ran over a rogue screw that had found its way into our driveway. Thankfully, this was a minor setback, costing only $29 for a quick tire patch rather than a full replacement. All’s well that ends well, indeed.

Ah, the unpredictable journey of home improvement! It often demands a significant financial investment, and sometimes, it even throws unexpected curveballs like flattening our tires. Yet, despite these challenges, we homeowners keep crawling back, driven by the enduring vision of creating a space that truly feels like home – a testament to the rewards of perseverance and passion in making our houses into dream homes.
