Elevating Kitchen Style: Installing Three Pendant Lights

Transforming Your Kitchen with Thoughtful Lighting Choices: A Guide to Creating Ambiance and Functionality

The kitchen, often hailed as the heart of the home, deserves lighting that is as functional as it is aesthetically pleasing. For many homeowners embarking on a renovation journey, upgrading light fixtures is more than just a practical necessity; it’s an opportunity to redefine the space’s ambiance, enhance workflow, and infuse personal style. This was precisely our mindset as we approached the much-anticipated task of replacing the outdated light fixtures in our own kitchen. We understood that lighting plays a pivotal role in creating a cohesive and inviting environment, especially in a home we plan to cherish for years to come.

Our philosophy centered on making intelligent, long-term investments. Instead of opting for temporary placeholders that would eventually be replaced during a future renovation phase, we committed to selecting three distinct, high-quality fixtures that we genuinely loved and envisioned remaining a cherished part of our home for the long haul. The goal was not to have matching lights, which can sometimes feel overly uniform, but rather to choose fixtures that would harmoniously relate to each other, creating a sense of curated cohesion. Each area of the kitchen presented a unique lighting challenge, calling for a bespoke solution to meet its specific functional and design requirements.

Kitchen light fixture planning

Our kitchen’s layout naturally divided into three primary zones, each demanding a particular type of illumination:

  • Over the Sink: We envisioned a clear glass pendant light. This choice was driven by the desire to maintain an unobstructed view out the window, allowing natural light to flood the space while the glass itself would beautifully gleam and reflect sunlight, adding a touch of elegance without being visually heavy.
  • The Central Cooking Area: This section previously housed a large, boxy fluorescent fixture. Our aim was to replace this utilitarian light with a more stylish and refined semi-flush mounted shade. We needed a fixture that could provide ample illumination for cooking tasks without dominating the ceiling space or clashing with the other design elements. (For context, the old fixture’s half-assembled state in the image allowed us to confirm wiring placement, but its full, wood-boxed glory can be seen here).
  • Over the Dining Table: This was perhaps the most anticipated choice. We had long admired a specific rope chandelier, dreaming of the warmth, texture, and character it would bring to our kitchen’s dining nook. This was destined to be our statement piece, grounding the entire space.

The Statement Piece: A Dream Rope Chandelier for the Dining Nook

Our quest for the perfect dining table light led us to a magnificent 24×24-inch rope chandelier. This particular piece had captivated our imagination for months, and we could already visualize how its organic texture and substantial presence would beautifully complement our weathered wood kitchen table (see our table here). After considerable deliberation and careful budgeting, we made the decision to invest in this cherished item. This represented the most significant amount we had ever spent on a single light fixture, a choice justified by our commitment to creating a “forever home” filled with pieces we truly adored.

The journey to acquiring this chandelier was a testament to the value of patience and diligent research in home furnishing. We initially discovered it priced at $460 on PureHome. A subsequent search revealed it on Wayfair for $391. However, the true breakthrough came when it appeared on Joss & Main for an unbeatable $360, complete with free shipping. Recognizing that a $100 saving was an exceptional deal for a high-quality piece, we promptly placed our order. The excitement of finally securing a fixture we had longed for was immense, and we fondly imagine enjoying countless breakfasts and dinners under its warm glow for decades to come.

Practical Elegance: The Over-Sink Glass Pendant

For the area above the kitchen sink, our requirements were clear: a fixture that offered both functionality and understated style, without competing for attention with the more dramatic rope chandelier. A glass pendant with oil-rubbed bronze hardware emerged as the ideal candidate. The transparent glass would ensure an open feel, allowing ample light to pass through and preventing any visual clutter in front of the window. The oil-rubbed bronze finish would also tie in beautifully with other existing or planned hardware elements in the kitchen, creating a cohesive design narrative.

Our search for this particular piece was refreshingly straightforward. A single trip to Home Depot yielded the perfect match. We found a charming pendant priced at $69 in-store, despite its online listing showing a slightly higher price of $79 and only silver as an available finish. The “dark bronze” version we discovered perfectly encapsulated the “dapper but not too demanding” aesthetic we sought. It provides a soft, focused light, ideal for tasks at the sink, and its simple elegance allows the rope chandelier to remain the undisputed star of the room while maintaining a harmonious balance.

The Ultimate Challenge: Finding the Perfect Semi-Flush Mount

Undoubtedly, selecting the semi-flush mount shade for the central cooking area proved to be the most formidable challenge of our lighting project. This quest felt like a montage in a movie, featuring countless hours spent browsing small boutiques, navigating vast big-box stores, meticulously sifting through online catalogs, and even exploring local classifieds. The primary difficulty stemmed from the need to replace a notably large, boxy fluorescent fixture. This meant that a typical, small “boob lamp” simply wouldn’t suffice; we required a fixture with significant presence and a wider diameter to adequately fill the space and provide proportionate illumination.

We did briefly consider installing recessed can lights, but after evaluating our kitchen’s unique characteristics, we decided against it. Our kitchen is naturally bright, boasting four generous windows that offer abundant daylight – a luxurious feature, considering our previous two kitchens each had only a single window over the sink looking into a sunroom. Given this natural brightness, we gravitated towards the idea of a semi-flush mounted shade. A shade would diffuse the light beautifully, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere rather than the stark, direct illumination of can lights. Furthermore, it offered an opportunity to introduce a unique design element to the ceiling.

Various semi-flush mount lighting options

Our exhaustive search yielded several contenders, each with its own pros and cons:

  1. 15-inch Natural Shade ($99): Found on LightingUniverse. While the natural material was appealing, we quickly realized its inadequacy. A simple trick of cutting a 15-inch sheet of paper and holding it against the ceiling confirmed our fears: it appeared far too small for the expansive area it needed to cover.
  2. 17-inch Shade ($155): Available from Overstock. This was a step up in size, offering a slightly better proportion, but still didn’t quite achieve the commanding presence we sought for the central ceiling fixture.
  3. Quatrefoil Flush Mount ($693): A stunning piece from Circa Lighting. Although significantly out of our budget, its elegant quatrefoil design served as a strong source of inspiration, guiding our aesthetic preferences. It solidified our desire for a fixture with interesting architectural details.
  4. 17-inch Caged Shade ($239): Spotted on Canada Lighting Experts. While its size was identical to the second option, we were drawn to its distinctive hardware and caged design, which added a touch of industrial chic. Ultimately, however, the size remained a limiting factor.
  5. 24-inch Burlap Quatrefoil-Shaped Shade ($130): Discovered at a local lighting outlet. This option immediately stood out. Its generous 24-inch diameter finally met our size requirement, and the burlap material offered a rustic yet refined texture that promised warmth. The quatrefoil shape, inspired by the Circa Lighting piece, added that touch of architectural interest we desired. Moreover, the price was exceptionally appealing, especially considering a similar version with brown trim retailed for nearly double the cost at Shades of Light.

The Harmonious Trio: Our Winning Selection Revealed

After much deliberation and comparison, the choice became clear. We wholeheartedly opted for the 24-inch burlap quatrefoil-shaped shade. This piece perfectly addressed our need for a substantial fixture that offered both character and the desired “cozy and casual” ambiance. While photographs can sometimes distort scale, it’s important to note that both this semi-flush mount and our large rope chandelier are each 24 inches wide. The chandelier, however, hangs lower, naturally claiming its role as the dominant focal point. The quatrefoil pendant will gracefully complement it, adding warmth, texture, and visual interest while balancing the opposite side of the room. The glass pendant over the sink will complete the layered lighting scheme with its soft, inviting glow by the window.

Our decision to choose the burlap shade was also influenced by its color, which we felt would beautifully tie into the natural tones of the rope chandelier, creating a cohesive visual flow throughout the kitchen. Below is a snapshot of the chosen shade at the store, where we selected the one atop the stack for its perfect hue and texture.

We are incredibly excited to see these three distinct yet complementary light fixtures installed and illuminating our kitchen. With some ceiling patching, fresh paint, and a bit of electrical fine-tuning remaining, our vision for a beautifully lit, functional, and stylish kitchen is on the verge of becoming a reality. These thoughtful lighting choices are set to transform our kitchen into a truly inviting and personalized space, proving that investing in quality and design makes all the difference in a beloved home.
