Untangle Your Tech Cables

Every modern office, whether a bustling corporate hub or a cozy home setup, inevitably accumulates a tangled web of wires and cables. This common challenge often transforms an otherwise organized space into an eyesore, presenting both aesthetic and practical dilemmas. Our own office was no exception, as you might recall from our previous post detailing the construction of under-desk storage. We were determined to conquer this unruly mess, transforming our chaotic cords into a more presentable and functional arrangement. For anyone familiar with our dedication to an orderly living environment, the random under-desk chaos simply wouldn’t do here at Casa Petersik. Beyond the visual clutter, a more pressing concern emerged: as our little Clara grew increasingly mobile, the potential for her to get into trouble under the desk became a real possibility. Addressing this safety hazard from the outset was paramount, ensuring peace of mind in our newly optimized workspace.

Setting the Stage: Ambitious Goals for a Pristine Office

Our quest for a cleaner, safer, and more efficient workspace was driven by several key objectives. In addition to the overarching goals of enhancing safety and visual appeal, we pinpointed two crucial functional improvements we aimed to achieve. These specific targets would serve as our guiding stars throughout the cable management overhaul, ensuring that every effort contributed meaningfully to our vision.

Goal 1: Consolidating Power and Freeing Outlets

The first major hurdle was our power strip situation. We currently had two surge protectors in play: one discreetly tucked away behind the file storage, accommodating essential items like our modem, and another perched inconveniently atop the storage shelf itself. This setup meant that both precious wall outlets behind the desk were completely monopolized, each by a bulky power cord plug. The ripple effect of this inefficiency was felt throughout the room. With the only other available outlets situated across the room behind the couch, we frequently found ourselves in frustrating scenarios – like dragging the vacuum cleaner cord all the way to the bathroom just to find an available plug. This everyday annoyance was a strong motivator to streamline our power distribution and reclaim those valuable wall outlets, turning a source of frustration into one of convenience and efficiency.

Goal 2: Reclaiming Valuable Desk Storage Space

Our second significant objective focused on decluttering the top of the file storage shelf. This surface, intended for functional storage or display, had unfortunately become a makeshift resting spot for a power strip, an external hard drive, and an old clock radio. Clearing this prime real estate would not only enhance the visual tidiness of the office but also unlock its true potential, allowing us to utilize it for more meaningful storage or decorative elements. The vision was a clean, unobstructed surface that contributed to the office’s overall calm and productive atmosphere, rather than adding to the existing clutter. Imagine a space where creativity could flow freely, unhindered by unnecessary electronic sprawl.

The Strategic Audit: Counting Plugs and Cutting Clutter

With our clear goals in mind, the next crucial step was to conduct a thorough inventory of all our electronic devices and their power requirements. The fundamental question we posed was: if we were to consolidate everything into a single power strip, how many outlets would that strip need to provide? To answer this definitively, we systematically unplugged every device and laid out their cords and adapters. This meticulous process served a dual purpose; not only did it give us an accurate count of necessary outlets, but it also presented an invaluable opportunity for decluttering. We used this moment to critically assess each item, asking ourselves if it was truly indispensable. The old clock radio, for instance, ultimately received the boot. In an age where our computers could easily handle both time-telling and music playback, its standalone presence felt redundant. Embracing the principle of devices that multitask efficiently, we streamlined our setup considerably. After this rigorous assessment, we were left with a focused collection of seven essential plugs, ready for their new, organized home.

Seven power plugs laid out for an office desk

For those curious about the specific components making up our essential seven, here’s a breakdown, from left to right: our trusty Airport Express wireless station, the power adapters for our two MacBook laptops, our landline telephone, the vital modem connecting us to the internet, our Lacie external hard drive for data backup, and finally, the plug for our desk lamp. With this precise tally, our mission became clear: to hunt for a high-capacity power strip. Ideally, we sought one with at least seven outlets, but preferably eight, providing that crucial extra slot for future flexibility. The implications of finding such a solution were significant. Not only would we gain an additional outlet on the strip itself, but we would also liberate one of our precious wall outlets, previously occupied by the second power strip, making it available for other needs, like that elusive vacuum cleaner. We dared to dream of a truly streamlined and versatile power setup. Our search led us to this promising candidate:

Belkin Concealed Surge Protector

The First Attempt: A Promising Solution Meets a Mac-Sized Obstacle

This particular model, a Belkin Concealed Surge Protector, came highly recommended by our friend Heather, who had recently integrated it into her own home office setup. She shared that she found hers at Home Depot – a somewhat unexpected retailer for such a specialized product, yet we discovered they offered a surprisingly broader selection than Office Depot, our initial port of call. Heather’s tip proved invaluable, and we were optimistic. Despite its semi-steep price tag of $49, we reasoned that the investment was worthwhile. The primary appeal was its enclosed, concealed case, offering a neat and kid-safe solution for hiding the entire cluster of plugs. The prospect of gaining a whopping eleven outlets (far exceeding our minimum requirement) plus the bonus of freeing up a wall outlet filled us with enthusiasm. We envisioned a perfectly tidy and secure power hub, a true testament to modern cable management.

However, our excitement was soon tempered by a rather significant discovery…

MacBook power adapter too large for surge protector

The elegant design of the Belkin Concealed Surge Protector simply didn’t play nice with Mac products. The MacBook AC adapters, with their distinctive bulk, proved too large to comfortably fit into the specially designed slot intended for oversized adapters. Even when attempting to plug them into the normal outlets, their dimensions prevented the cover from securely closing. It was a disheartening design flaw – an undeniable “FAIL!” This experience served as a crucial reminder of the importance of checking compatibility, especially with modern electronics that often feature unique power brick designs. A product that seemed perfect on paper quickly proved impractical for our specific needs, forcing us back to the drawing board.

Second Time’s the Charm: Discovering the Eco-Friendly Solution

A bit deflated but undeterred, we retraced our steps back to Home Depot, marking our second visit there that day (and a rare second outing for Clara). Our mission: to find a suitable replacement. This time, our eyes landed on a different contender, one we hadn’t even noticed during our initial power strip reconnaissance:

Belkin Conserve surge protector with remote

This was the Belkin Conserve. Priced at a more agreeable $39, it was not only cheaper than our previous attempt but also met our crucial minimum requirement of eight outlets. What truly set this power strip apart, however, was its innovative eco-option. It featured a remote switch designed to power off six of its eight outlets when not in use, effectively combating the notorious “vampire power” effect. For those unfamiliar, vampire power (also known as standby power or phantom load) refers to the electricity consumed by electronics when they are switched off or in standby mode. This constant, albeit small, draw of power accumulates over time, leading to wasted energy and higher utility bills. The Belkin Conserve’s remote offered a simple, elegant solution to this often-overlooked energy drain, promising both environmental benefits and cost savings for our home office.

After a quick mental calculation and “plug scheming,” we realized this could be the perfect fit for our office cable management strategy. We only needed our modem, landline phone, and Airport Express to remain constantly powered. Conveniently, the modem’s power adapter featured an extra outlet on its back, meaning these three essential items could be easily accommodated within the two “always-on” outlets of the Conserve strip. This clever arrangement allowed us to fully utilize the energy-saving functionality for our less frequently used devices, like the MacBooks and desk lamp. Our disappointment quickly transformed into genuine excitement, and we practically skipped (or at least walked with a happy bounce) to the register. We had found our ideal smart surge protector, one that aligned perfectly with our functional, aesthetic, and even environmental aspirations.

Mounting for Maximum Efficiency and Aesthetic Appeal

Like many well-designed surge protectors, this Belkin model came equipped with convenient mounting holes on its back, making it ready for secure installation. This feature was instrumental in achieving our second primary goal: successfully clearing everything off the top of the file shelf. Our chosen mounting spot was the sturdy back rail of the desk. We deliberately avoided mounting it to the underside of the desk, reasoning that gravity would be less cooperative in keeping plugs securely seated if installed horizontally. Mounting it vertically on the back rail would leverage gravity to our advantage, ensuring that plugs remained firmly in place, even with the weight of multiple adapters. With the location decided, I proceeded to mark a few tiny pilot holes, preparing the desk for its new, neatly mounted power hub that would serve as the nerve center for our organized workspace.

For anyone who has ever struggled with precisely marking holes for mounting items – perhaps when hanging a picture frame or installing hardware – I’d like to share my slightly unconventional but consistently effective method. It involves a simple piece of blue painter’s tape. I wrap a small strip from the backside of the item, directly through the center of the mounting holes, and then bring it back around to the front side where it’s clearly visible. To avoid any confusion, I even draw a small arrow on the tape to remind myself which edge to align with my measurements. This simple yet brilliant trick ensures accurate marking every time, taking the guesswork out of precise installation.

Technique for marking pilot holes with painter's tape

Once the tape is in place, I can hold the item (in this case, the power strip) against the desired surface and accurately transfer the vertical position of the holes. Next, I draw a straight line based on this marking, and then measure along that line to precisely mark the horizontal drilling points. While it may not be the most high-tech or sophisticated method in the world, this reliable “old-school” approach has consistently delivered perfect results for me, ensuring that everything hangs straight and secure. With my two pilot holes meticulously drilled and a bit of careful “manhandling,” I successfully mounted the power strip securely to the back rail underneath the desk. Ta-da! The transformation was immediate and satisfying, bringing us one step closer to our vision of a perfectly organized desk setup. Note: The longer, unused holes visible on either side are remnants from the desk’s original construction. As they were hidden from view once the office was set up, I opted not to bother filling them in – sometimes, a little bit of practical laziness wins out in the pursuit of efficiency!

Conquering the Cable Jungle: Smart Cord Management Techniques

With the power strip firmly in its new home, the moment of truth arrived: plugging in all seven devices. As each plug found its slot, a new, albeit concentrated, mess of cords began to unfold before my eyes. “Boo!” I thought. Even with the basic cord wrangler thoughtfully provided by Belkin (that folded flat tan ring on the right side of the strip, designed to pull all wires to one side), the scene was far from ideal. It was at this point that I truly grasped the scope of the cable jungle I had inadvertently created by consolidating all seven cords into a single surge protector. The sheer volume of wires was daunting. Sheesh. This initial visual setback, however, was merely a precursor to the true cable management magic that was about to unfold.

Initial mess of cords after plugging into the mounted surge protector

However, there was no need to worry; I still had several more cable management tricks up my sleeve specifically for making that excess cordage seemingly disappear. One of our key tools for this final phase was a pack of adhesive cable organizer clips, which we smartly snagged at Office Depot for just a few bucks. These unassuming heroes feature a small but mighty adhesive strip on the back, allowing them to be stuck virtually anywhere wires need to be corralled and guided. They are incredibly versatile for routing cables along desk legs, cabinet backs, or any surface where a discreet pathway is needed, proving that effective organization doesn’t have to break the bank.

Adhesive cable organizer clips

I began working my magic on the backside of the desk. By strategically placing one cable clip approximately every foot or so, I was able to meticulously guide all the cords for our desktop items – specifically the computers and the lamp. This method ensured that the cables remained hidden behind the desk, emerging only at the precise point where they were needed. For instance, my computer cord now elegantly pops up right next to my laptop, minimizing visible clutter and contributing to a much tidier workspace aesthetic. Furthermore, by wrapping any excess cordage around itself and securing it with the clips, I effectively eliminated unsightly sagging loops from making an appearance under the desk. This wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was a crucial safety measure, preventing Clara from being tempted to tug or nibble on any loose wires – you can never be too careful with curious little ones, making child-safe office design a top priority!

Cords neatly routed using cable clips behind the desk

For the remaining wires, most of which descended directly towards the modem (which was cleverly hidden within one of the white storage boxes on the blue shelf), I opted for a simpler but equally effective solution. A single twist-tie, conveniently leftover from the surge protector’s packaging, proved perfect for corralling everything into one thick, manageable strand. Beyond this, I allowed myself to relax a bit, knowing that the majority of these wires would be completely obscured behind the file shelf. The reality was, unless someone was actually sitting on the floor directly under our desk, they would never see any of the carefully managed cables to begin with. This pragmatic approach ensured maximum tidiness in visible areas, while still offering a functional solution for less-seen sections, striking a perfect balance between perfection and practicality in our home office setup.

Cords bundled with a twist tie near a storage shelf

Of course, another potential eyesore was the tangle of cords emerging directly from the wall outlet. We had already made significant progress here by eliminating one plug, no longer requiring a second power strip. For the remaining loose cord, my trusty cable clips once again came to the rescue. Placed strategically, they secured the cord neatly against the wall. Fortuitously, both the cord itself and the clips were almost identical in color to the wall, rendering them nearly invisible – a truly seamless integration that highlights the power of attention to detail in office organization. As for the particularly unsightly black coaxial cable that connected to our modem (a legacy from previous owners who had lovingly fed it through a drilled hole in the floor), I employed another simple trick. I gently hammered a small finishing nail into the quarter-round molding at the base of the wall, subtly tucking the black cable behind it. This clever placement effectively hid the cable, allowing it to blend imperceptibly against the dark brown floor. With these final touches, we simply pushed the blue storage shelf back into its designated place, revealing a dramatically improved, clean, and orderly under-desk area where cords ran neatly parallel and out of sight.

The Triumphant Result: A Harmonious and Functional Workspace

I am utterly thrilled to report the successful achievement of both my primary goals. Goal #1 – freeing up a vital wall outlet – has been accomplished, significantly enhancing the room’s overall electrical versatility and eliminating previous frustrations. And Goal #2 – reclaiming and clearing the top of the file shelf – has likewise been met, transforming a cluttered surface into a functional and aesthetically pleasing space, ready for new purposes. While I was initially a little bummed that my “cram-all-plugs-into-one-surge-protector” tactic still left a noticeable mass of plugs hanging from the back of the desk (even though they are completely out of sight unless one is literally sitting on the floor underneath), the overall impact is overwhelmingly positive. To further obscure this last remnant of cable complexity, Sherry and I plan to introduce a small, decorative tray on the now-cleared file shelf. This tray will not only serve a practical purpose, holding items like her paint fan decks readily at hand, but will also perfectly conceal that “gang of plugs” once and for all, achieving ultimate visual harmony and a truly pristine desk setup. Most importantly, when viewed from any normal sitting or standing angle, the entire setup looks magnificently clean and perfectly organized, a testament to effective cable management.

Beyond Cords: Embracing Wireless Printing for Ultimate Freedom

Before we conclude our journey through the world of office wire management, we wanted to share another significant wire-related project we enthusiastically tackled this weekend: making our printing truly wireless. Our robust four-year-old HP printer/scanner/fax machine, which had faithfully resided under Sherry’s old desk, was still functioning perfectly. However, its fax component made it somewhat bulky for our streamlined new office design, and crucially, it lacked any wireless functionality. As fate would have it, while shopping at Office Depot for our other essential cord-organizing goodies, we stumbled upon an irresistible deal: an HP PhotoSmart C4780 printer/scanner/copier on sale, reduced from $100 to a mere $79. This unexpected find presented a compelling upgrade, promising to further enhance our home office’s efficiency and aesthetic.

The new HP PhotoSmart C4780 offered numerous advantages. Its wireless capability was the standout feature, promising unprecedented flexibility in printer placement and eliminating the need for a physical data cable to our computers. Beyond that, it boasted a sleeker design, a much easier-to-use scanner pad, and a significantly smaller, thinner footprint – perfectly suited for our compact office. While we had initially hoped to hold out for a shiny white, Mac-esque printer/scanner that would seamlessly blend with our aesthetic, the combination of the incredible deal, its shelf-ready size, and the promise of adding robust wireless printing and scanning functionality to our office proved impossible to resist. Woo hoo! This was truly a step forward in creating a modern, wire-free workspace, maximizing both convenience and visual appeal.

I’ll spare you the intricate details of setting up and installing the printer itself, but rest assured, the wireless function works flawlessly (thank goodness – and yes, we held our breath during the initial test!). This success means there’s absolutely no need to keep the printer tethered within cords’ reach of our computers, offering unparalleled placement freedom anywhere within the Wi-Fi range. Even the power cord for the new printer presented no challenge; it slipped nicely through the small, discreet space between the bookcase and the wall. This made it incredibly easy for me to feed it to our other available outlet, conveniently located behind the couch, all without creating any new form of messy wire chaos in the process. Perfecto! This final touch cemented our commitment to an elegantly organized and technologically advanced home office, proving that thoughtful planning can lead to truly transformative results.
