Father’s Day Recap: A Blend of Unexpected Surprises, Thoughtful Gifts, and Home Updates
As we eagerly anticipate bringing you the latest progress on our deck—expect a comprehensive update this coming Monday, assuming no unforeseen inspection hurdles!—we wanted to round out the week with a truly ‘dad-worthy’ post. Many of you have been asking for it, and we’re thrilled to finally share a belated recap of our Father’s Day celebration. Much like last year’s memorable festivities, this year’s special day was filled with unique home-related activities and deeply personal gifts, making it an occasion we won’t soon forget. It was a day that perfectly encapsulated the joyful chaos and heartwarming connections that define our family life and our ongoing home improvement journey.

A Serene Start to a Surprisingly Busy Day
Our Father’s Day commenced with the comforting rhythm of what might be considered a perfectly normal, relaxed family celebration. We ventured out to one of our all-time favorite brunch spots, deLux, a local gem known for its vibrant atmosphere and delectable fare. Nestled in their charming open-air back room, we savored every bite of our fluffy French toast, basking in the morning’s gentle light and the joy of shared moments. The culinary experience was a delightful symphony of flavors, a perfect start to any special day. The morning even offered a little pre-brunch adventure; an impromptu walk through the neighborhood after realizing we had arrived a full twenty minutes before opening—a minor oops that simply added to the morning’s charm and gave us extra time to chat and enjoy the fresh air, setting a lighthearted tone for the hours ahead.

The Unexpected Call: A New York Times Photo Shoot!
However, the day took an exhilarating and entirely unexpected turn from there. The night before, we received a startling revelation: a photographer from The New York Times was scheduled to arrive at noon sharp to photograph our kitchen! Yes, you read that right – *The New York Times*! Cue the immediate surge of adrenaline and, admittedly, some very sweaty palms. We had already been interviewed a couple of weeks prior for an article focusing on individuals utilizing online floor-planning software to guide their home renovations and DIY home projects. Yet, it wasn’t until 10:30 PM on Saturday evening that we received the urgent notification that a photographer needed to visit our home a mere twelve hours later, on Father’s Day, to capture the visuals. The scramble to prepare for such a high-profile visit was officially on!
This sudden development meant our relaxing Father’s Day plans were momentarily sidelined. We rushed home from brunch, a flurry of activity commencing to ensure both our kitchen and ourselves were presentable for such a prestigious publication. From tidying every surface to a quick personal refresh, the pressure to make everything perfect in such a short timeframe was immense, but also incredibly exciting and somewhat surreal. The photographer, who was incredibly kind, professional, and efficient, arrived promptly with an impressive array of sophisticated equipment. Just look at the serious gear he brought along to ensure every detail of our kitchen’s design and functionality was perfectly captured for the renowned publication.

Navigating Media Coverage: The Article’s Nuance
The article itself, much anticipated, was actually published last Thursday while we were attending the inspiring Haven Conference. While we were undoubtedly thrilled and honored to be featured in such a respected publication, we must admit that we weren’t entirely head-over-heels with the final portrayal. We felt that our quote, in particular, made us sound somewhat anti-architect, which couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, we have several close friends who are architects, and we deeply respect their profession and invaluable contributions to design and home construction. Our blog consistently champions thoughtful design, whether from professionals or enthusiastic DIYers.
During the interview, Sherry was specifically asked about the role of kitchen designers (distinct from architects) and how they assist homeowners in crafting their ideal spaces. Her response was something along the lines of, “a designer might inform you that onyx is a trending material, or help you articulate your aesthetic preferences if you’re unsure, which can be incredibly beneficial.” Unfortunately, a significantly shortened version of this statement was somehow attributed as our quote about architects. We want to clarify that architects, like skilled kitchen designers, contribute a tremendous amount more than just discussing material trends. They offer comprehensive design solutions, structural integrity, innovative problem-solving, and vision for entire homes, making them crucial partners in many renovation stories. This experience served as a valuable reminder that there’s always an inherent risk that a story’s final presentation might diverge from its original pitch or our intended message. We had initially understood the piece to be more focused on the software itself, similar to our own post exploring the pros and cons of various design programs. Nevertheless, the photograph of us turned out wonderfully – no closed eyes or spinach in the teeth, so we’ll chalk that up as a win for our home renovation blog! Thoughtful Father’s Day Gifts & The Art of Home Personalization
Despite the unexpected flurry of the New York Times shoot, which quickly consumed the morning and led straight into Clara’s nap time (meaning no more Father’s Day activities for me, as we were also diligently working on blog projects and practicing our Haven Conference presentation), Sherry, Clara, and even Burger, our beloved chihuahua, managed to spoil me with some incredibly thoughtful Father’s Day gifts. These weren’t just any presents; they were carefully chosen items that seamlessly integrated into our home and reflected my unique interests, proving that personalized home decor can also be the most meaningful gift.
One of my absolute favorites was this charming addition to our kitchen: a dishtowel adorned with my all-time favorite motif – a bicycle! Sherry, knowing my penchant for quirky details and all things two-wheeled, sourced it from Joss & Main. Now, am I the only dad who gets genuinely excited about a new dishtowel? Perhaps. But put a bird bike on it and I’m completely sold! It’s the little things that truly make a house feel like a home, and this towel is a perfect example of how even utilitarian items can add a dash of personality and joy to your kitchen decor, enhancing the overall interior styling.

Understanding my appreciation for unique and cool art, Sherry also discovered this delightful “Twenty Northern Friends” print. This piece is more than just an image; it’s a subtle yet beautiful nod to our unforgettable Alaskan honeymoon, a cherished memory encapsulated in art. Beyond its sentimental value, the print is packed with fascinating, geeky trivia about lesser-known Arctic animals. It’s truly a conversation starter, perfect for a living room! We love how it combines personal history with educational curiosity, making it a unique piece of wall art.

For instance, did you know that a Snowy Owl has the incredible ability to consume nearly 2,000 lemmings in a single year? That’s about 2,000 more lemmings than I’ve managed to eat in my entire lifetime, I’d wager! We envision this captivating print gracing a wall in our living room, adding character and a touch of the wild to our space. We’re currently on the hunt for the perfect frame, but fortunately, Target offers a standard size that should fit just right, simplifying our framed prints display. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on its official unveiling. We believe its cool tones and intriguing details will play beautifully off the existing dark gray beams in that room, creating a cohesive and visually interesting focal point for our interior styling, and further personalizing our home decor.

Tying Up Loose Ends: Our Home’s Evolving Art Collection
Speaking of keeping you posted, that last picture reminded us of a little blog confession: we’re often guilty of sharing glimpses of unframed prints, promising to hang them and share the final look later, only to hang them and then… forget to share the updated photos! Well, it’s high time we tied up some of those loose ends and brought you up to speed on the evolving art collection throughout our home. Consider this an impromptu gallery tour, solving some lingering mysteries for our dedicated readers and showcasing how we integrate diverse pieces into our home’s design. This continuous refresh and thoughtful placement are key aspects of creating a truly personalized living space.
The Frame Hallway: A Curated Passage
Come on into our “frame hallway,” a passage that has slowly transformed into a dynamic gallery of our travels and cherished memories. Make yourself comfortable, because there’s quite a story behind each piece, and how it found its current home. This isn’t just a place to get from point A to point B; it’s a journey through our adventures, a constantly evolving hallway gallery wall that reflects our life’s chapters. Each framed print adds character and depth to this often-overlooked area, turning it into a vibrant display of our personal narrative.

First up is the beautiful map of Maui, a cherished souvenir we acquired during our unforgettable Hawaiian vacation back in March. This vibrant map now proudly hangs in our frame hallway, serving as a constant reminder of warm memories and island breezes. We were incredibly fortunate to find a frame at Target that perfectly accommodated it; the mat’s opening was almost precisely the size of the map itself – huzzah for standard sizes saving the day and making our framed art display much easier! This spot on the wall had actually become vacant when its previous occupant, an old map of Richmond, found a new home on our kitchen shelves, proving that in our house, art and decor items, much like frames and pillows, definitely get around and enjoy changing locales, adapting to new home decor ideas and spatial needs!

And speaking of our travels out west, you might recall the exquisite wooden letterpress print that we picked up during our trip to Portland. This unique piece, with its tactile texture and handcrafted appeal, has also found its permanent residence within the embrace of our hallway, though on a different wall, contributing to the eclectic and personal feel of this transitional space. Its minimalist charm and artisanal quality add a layer of sophistication to our evolving hallway gallery wall, truly making it a focal point of our home decor.

You can spot it here, elegantly positioned on the bottom right, adding another layer of personality to our evolving gallery wall. It blends seamlessly with the other pieces, each telling a part of our story, creating a cohesive and inviting visual narrative in our home’s passage.

I wish I could precisely recall what adorned that specific spot before, but so many items were temporarily (or permanently!) relocated and rearranged while shooting our book back in January that the wall might have been empty for a while. Oh, wait, now it comes back to me! It was the other frame – a collection of food-themed images that we moved into the kitchen after the shelves were built. This particular piece was originally an old $12 poster from allposters.com that Sherry ingeniously cut up several years ago to decorate our very first kitchen. It’s incredible how pieces evolve and find new life in different areas of the house, adapting to new designs and functions, truly highlighting the dynamic nature of interior styling and home decor.

Reflecting on Father’s Day and the Ongoing Home Journey
Who would have thought that a simple Father’s Day recap would naturally weave into a detailed update on our miscellaneous art installations and the ever-changing landscape of our home decor? Oh, the delightful twists and turns of blogging and homeownership! Reflecting on Father’s Day itself, I am overwhelmingly thankful for the opportunity to have spent the day with my two favorite girls, Clara and Sherry, and of course, my one and only favorite chihuahua, Burger. Despite the unexpected visit from a very nice (and impressively equipped!) New York Times photographer, the core of the day was about family, connection, and the comfort of our evolving home. It was a perfect blend of cherished family traditions and exciting, unanticipated moments that made it truly memorable, further enriching our home improvement journey.
How was your Father’s Day this year? Can you even recall that far back amidst the hustle and bustle? I know I had to dig deep into my memory banks to recount all the details! Do any of you have exciting new art pieces you’re planning to hang, perhaps adding a fresh vibe to a room and inspiring new home decor ideas? Or are there any ‘old project updates’ lurking in your camera roll or memory that you have yet to blog about, or simply share with friends? It’s always fascinating how those seemingly minor updates, those small but significant tweaks to our living spaces, can be so hard to remember to share, yet they contribute so much to the ongoing story of our homes. We’d love to hear your stories and see your latest projects in interior styling and personalized home decor!
