The day has finally arrived! Clara has officially completed her journey from the cozy confines of her crib to the expansive world of her very own “big girl” bed. It’s a milestone that many parents anticipate with a mix of excitement and trepidation, and for us, it came after an unexpectedly long and contented stay in her crib. We genuinely never envisioned her embracing her crib for quite so long; in fact, we’ve had a twin-sized “big girl” bed ready and waiting for over a year now. Many of her friends had already made the switch by then, but Clara, true to her charming nature, loves to surprise us and genuinely adored her crib.
And honestly, we adored that she was sleeping soundly all night long. Even after mastering potty training, she would hold it until morning, a testament to her comfort and deep sleep. Why disrupt such a perfect sleep routine? We decided not to “rock the boat” for the sake of everyone’s well-being and chose to trust our pediatrician’s sagely advice: “Let sleeping kids lie; she’ll let you know when she’s ready.” This philosophy became our guiding principle, allowing Clara to dictate her own pace for this significant developmental step.

The Gentle Nudge: Signs of Readiness for the Big Kid Bed
The first subtle hints that Clara was considering a change came in the form of what we affectionately called “play naps.” She started experimenting with her big girl bed during the day, not for actual sleep, but for imaginative play. We took this as a clear signal – a quiet whisper of interest. These playful sessions soon evolved into a few genuine naps in her new bed, which quickly solidified into a desire to try sleeping there overnight. And just like that, the transition truly began.
What started as tentative curiosity smoothly unfolded into a complete shift. Now, for over a month, she has been 100% in her big girl bed, a duration that finally grants us the confidence to make such definitive mathematical statements! This steady, child-led approach proved incredibly effective, mitigating much of the stress often associated with this milestone.
Overcoming Parental Fears: A Seamless Transition
Our biggest apprehension about moving her from the crib to a bed was the potential for nighttime wanderings. We pictured her using the newfound freedom to get up and play in her room, or worse, waking us up at an ungodly hour. These are common fears for parents, as the open access of a bed can feel like an invitation for midnight adventures.
Yet, Clara, ever the delightful surprise, managed the switch with remarkable ease. Aside from a couple of amusing incidents involving her getting up to meticulously arrange another stuffed animal in her bed – a small price to pay for uninterrupted sleep – she has consistently slept through the night and through her naps without a hitch. We are not just thrilled; we are incredibly relieved that our fears were unfounded. It’s a true testament to her readiness and adaptability, making this transition far smoother than we could have ever hoped.

Embracing Growth: Bittersweet Reflections on Time’s Passage
There’s a curious duality to this transition. Part of me marvels that she was so content in a crib for such an extended period, while another part can barely grasp that she’s now sleeping soundly on a full-sized twin mattress every single night. Where did my tiny infant go? It feels like just yesterday she was cradled in my arms, a miniature bundle of joy. You blink, and suddenly they’re growing into their own, tackling new milestones with an impressive stride. No, I’m not crying; there’s just a bit of dust in my eye, I promise. It’s a profound reminder of how quickly children grow and how precious each phase truly is.
Making Room for More Fun: The Crib’s Departure and Room Redesign
Perhaps the most exhilarating aspect of this development, from a practical standpoint, was the opportunity to finally move the crib out of Clara’s room. We made a conscious decision to wait about a month after she fully transitioned to her new bed before removing the crib. Our aim was to ensure she didn’t feel as though it was abruptly snatched away the moment she was finished using it, fostering a sense of control and gentle progression. As we carefully maneuvered it out, we explained to her how its departure would create much more space for “fun things” – a promise we were eager to fulfill.

And so, we were left with a gloriously blank wall, a clean slate sporting an “in-between” look, awaiting its transformation. It was exciting to imagine the possibilities this empty canvas presented for creating a space that truly reflects Clara’s evolving personality and interests.

Now, let’s fast forward a bit, and here’s a glimpse of what that wall is shaping up to be.

Designing a Dream Space: Blending Nursery Charm with Big Kid Fun
I can hear your thoughts already: “You said ‘make more room for fun,’ and then you put a dresser there?” And yes, you’re absolutely right! However, the wall where the dresser previously resided is currently undergoing a much grander transformation – we’re working on creating a complete “wall o’ fun” for her there, packed with creative and playful elements. This new arrangement simply made more sense for the room’s flow and overall design.
Besides, Clara was incredibly excited for us to hang the whimsical birdcages, previously cherished elements from her playroom, up above her dresser in its new prime spot. This room is truly blossoming into a beautiful amalgamation of her past and present, a delightful mix of sentimental pieces from her nursery and vibrant, engaging items from her playroom. With striped toy baskets, a charming moose lamp, a cozy play table and chairs, a functional daybed, and a growing pile of carefully selected art pieces waiting to be hung, the space feels thoughtfully curated and uniquely hers.
Despite these additions, the wall still feels a tad sparse. I’m contemplating layering in some more art to create a richer gallery effect, or perhaps filling the birdcages with something visually interesting. Piles of colorful ribbons come to mind – Clara, in her current phase, is utterly obsessed with ribbons! So, this particular wall is still a work in progress, but I believe it’s definitely heading in the right, more personalized direction. It’s all about adding those thoughtful, child-centric details that make a room truly special.

DIY Decor: Hanging Whimsical Birdcages and Personal Touches
For those curious about the birdcages, the hanging process was surprisingly straightforward. We simply used sturdy white plant hooks, screwed firmly into ceiling anchors, to ensure they were nice and secure. When it came to their exact placement, it was a collaborative effort that involved a bit of trial and error (and a lot of laughs). John would hold them up, and I’d stand back, offering directives like “there – no, a little to the left! – okay, right there!” Once we pinpointed the perfect spots, we marked them on the ceiling, installed the hooks, and then meticulously adjusted the ribbon length on each birdcage until we achieved the desired hanging height and aesthetic balance. It’s these small, personalized DIY projects that truly infuse a room with character.

Naturally, during the “get-the-hooks-in-the-ceiling” phase, our little assistant was more than happy to play with the birdcages on the floor. At one memorable point, she even picked both of them up, eyes wide with delight, and breathlessly declared, “I love carrying birdcages around!” We were both laughing so hard at her adorable enthusiasm that we couldn’t even see straight, let alone grab a camera. But I did manage to capture this sweet moment just before that hilarious declaration.

The Power of Small Details: A Simple DIY Bowl Makeover
Oh, and this next detail might seem minor, but it’s a testament to how small imperfections can gnaw at you until you finally address them. The glossy red bowl on the dresser, overflowing with blocks, always bothered me. It was originally just a simple white bowl from Ikea that I had spray-painted red for a book project. While its top was perfectly vibrant and glossy, its bottom was annoyingly splotchy and only half-sprayed. This wouldn’t have been an issue if the bottom wasn’t visible, but due to its curved sides, you could clearly see the messy, unfinished underside (if you scroll up two pictures, you can spot what I mean).
So, I finally tackled something I’d been meaning to do forever: I painted the bottom a contrasting color. It took me a mere twenty minutes to complete, and I honestly have no idea why I procrastinated for so long! For anyone looking to refresh a similar item, here’s how I got it done: I began by rubbing the bottom of the bowl with a liquid deglosser. This crucial step helps prepare the surface for paint adhesion, ensuring a smooth, long-lasting finish.

Then, using a small brush and a test pot of paint we’ve had lying around forever – a lovely shade called “Embellished Blue” by Behr – I carefully applied a thin coat to the bottom of the bowl. The small brush and a light touch prevented any drips onto the front. After two coats and adequate drying time between each, the bowl was ready to rock its new, polished look back on the dresser. It’s amazing how such a quick and easy DIY project can make such a significant difference in the overall appearance of a piece.

Here’s how that side of the room looks from the doorway now, with all the subtle yet impactful changes in place. And notice those small hooks on the side of the dresser? They once served a utilitarian purpose, holding wet bags for our cloth diapers. Now, reimagined and repurposed, I’ve strung up two delicate ribbons to hold Clara’s collection of hair clips. She absolutely loves snapping them off and on, turning a simple storage solution into a fun, engaging activity. She’s such a funny, imaginative gal, always finding joy in the little things.

A Room Evolving: The Ongoing Journey of Personalization
Speaking of funny, it’s quite amusing how quickly you become accustomed to a particular sight, like turning the corner and expecting to see this…

… and then suddenly, it’s simply not there anymore. The absence of the crib creates a noticeable void, but one that is quickly being filled with new possibilities and fresh aesthetics. It’s a visual cue that her space is growing and evolving, just as she is.
The most exciting wall of the room, however, is still very much a work in progress. You might catch a glimpse of the corners of a few intriguing items that we’ve already started to add to the mix on the right side of this room shot. I still have a handful of things to paint, hang, and drill into place, but we’re optimistically hoping to have that entire wall completed and beautifully photographed to share with all of you very soon. Stay tuned for the grand reveal!

Your Turn: Sharing Crib-to-Bed Transition Stories
Until then, I would absolutely love to hear about other people’s experiences with the crib-to-bed transition. Every child’s journey is unique, and these stories are always so insightful and often wonderfully entertaining. Were your children incredibly young when they made the switch, perhaps even climbing out of their cribs? Or is Clara, by some chance, destined to end up in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest crib holdout? Did your son or daughter transition to a toddler bed first, or did they make the leap straight to a twin-sized mattress?
It’s truly amazing how children navigate these developmental milestones at such different paces – whether it’s walking, talking, or indeed, sleeping in a “big kid” bed. For instance, Clara was an exceptionally early talker but showed very little interest in walking for quite some time. And she certainly demonstrated a greater affection for her crib than most children! I find it so beautiful and affirming that they all move forward at their own sweet, individual pace, teaching us patience and the importance of following their lead.
