Elevating Our Blog Experience

Yup, after months of working diligently behind the scenes on a comprehensive blog makeover – a journey that, we’re not exaggerating, literally spanned several months – we’ve FINALLY let ‘er rip! This wasn’t just a simple tweak; it was a complete overhaul, a digital renovation mirroring the countless home projects we’ve shared over the years. Like any significant undertaking, this project came with its fair share of unexpected twists and turns. We navigated through mysterious coding glitches that seemingly appeared out of nowhere, inexplicable site crashes that tested our patience (and yours, for which we are truly grateful!), and even dealt with the rather dramatic interruptions of an earthquake and a hurricane to really round things out. But before another excuse could derail our progress, we made the conscious decision to just launch. It’s not 100% polished; perfection is a myth, especially in the ever-evolving world of web design. There’s always a chance the site might experience another hiccup, or perhaps a blizzard will strike next week, adding yet another layer to our saga. Who knows what the future holds, but what we do know is that this fresh start is long overdue and incredibly exciting.

Blog redesign launch announcement

Our Blog’s Grand Unveiling: A Fresh Look, Enhanced Experience, and Exciting New Features

It’s genuinely surprising to us that this extensive redesign didn’t happen sooner. For an incredible three years, stretching all the way back to the spring of 2008, our blog sported the exact same look, background, and layout. If you can believe it, through countless room repainting projects, furniture rearrangements, and even a move to an entirely new house, the digital backdrop of our creative endeavors remained unchanged. It began to feel a little silly, almost like wearing an old outfit that no longer quite fit our evolving style or lifestyle. So, the time was most definitely ripe for a change. While we understand there might be some loyal readers out there who will fondly miss the old look – we too are sentimental creatures, cherishing the memories associated with that chapter – we are absolutely thrilled to finally present a fresh new digital outfit. This transformation isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a more vibrant, intuitive, and engaging platform for everyone who visits.

New blog design elements showcasing a modern aesthetic

The Vision Behind Our Redesign: Crafting a Better Blog Experience

With this comprehensive website makeover, we set out to achieve several key objectives, all aimed at enhancing your browsing experience and better reflecting who we are today. Here’s a little bit of what we were hoping to accomplish with our new blog design:

  • Aesthetic Modernization: We aimed to update the entire look – from colors and patterns to typefaces – to be more reflective of our current design choices and the aesthetic of our new home. The goal was a cohesive and contemporary feel that resonates with our evolving style.
  • Inclusive Brand Identity: The old header often led folks to believe our blog was solely about the “house” part of our name. Our new design strives to make the header more inclusive, representing the diverse array of topics we cover, from DIY projects and home decor to family life and pets.
  • Brighter and Lighter Feel: The previous color scheme, while beloved for a time, was starting to feel a bit dull and heavy in moments. We wanted to lighten up the overall atmosphere, creating a more inviting and airy digital space.
  • Improved Navigation and Content Discovery: A primary goal was to significantly improve site navigation, making it easier for you, our valued readers, to discover new content, revisit old favorites, and seamlessly explore the wealth of information and inspiration we’ve shared.
  • Contemporary Vibe: Ultimately, we wanted the entire site to feel fresher, more aligned with the current digital landscape of 2011 (and beyond!) and distinctly less like its 2008 predecessor. This meant a complete refresh of the user interface and overall user experience.

This redesigned space is the culmination of our amateur web designing skills, fueled by passion and countless late nights. So far, we genuinely love it, even though there are undoubtedly still elements we’re trying to finesse and perfect. We’ve been tweaking it constantly for the past several weeks, which means we’re pretty accustomed to it by now. However, we completely understand if some of you might still feel a bit skeptical of the change or find it takes some getting used to. Think of it much like rearranging a room or painting a wall – sometimes you just need to live with it for a few days to truly appreciate the new perspective and aesthetic.

A Deep Dive into the New Visuals: Personal Touches and Subtle Homages

Our Custom Header Design: A Tapestry of Memories and Meaning

One of the most exciting elements of our new design is the custom header. To create this unique visual, we meticulously photographed a collection of objects that hold immense personal meaning to us. These items were carefully arranged on white cardstock and captured outside, emphasizing our commitment to keeping things authentic and personal. In case you can’t quite decipher the stories behind each treasured item on your own, here’s a little insight into the symbolism and significance embedded within our new header:

  • Photostrips: These nostalgic strips have always brought us joy and hold a special place in our hearts, prominently featuring in memorable moments like our backyard wedding. They represent spontaneity and shared happy memories.
  • Clara and Burger: Our beloved daughter, Clara, and our cherished dog, Burger, are as integral a part of this blog’s narrative as any DIY project we’ve ever undertaken. Their delightful picture was an absolute must, signifying their central role in our lives and content.
  • Wooden “C” Block & Bone-Shaped Treat: To further celebrate Clara and Burger, a charming little wooden “C” block for Clara and a small bone-shaped dog treat (cleverly placed on the other side) were included as endearing little ties to our family members.
  • NYC Souvenirs: Sherry and I first met in 2004 while living in the vibrant heart of New York City. The miniature wooden skyscraper and classic taxi cabs serve as sweet reminders of those early, formative days and the beginning of our journey together.
  • Lucky Pennies: Yes, we’re cheap, and we proudly save our pennies! The collection of change in the header actually adds up to seven cents, which happens to be a lucky number for us. Furthermore, the dates on each of the pennies are from 2007, the very year we embarked on this little old blog adventure.
  • Richmond Magnet: We live in, and absolutely adore, Richmond, Virginia. Including a small Richmond magnet was our way of representing our beloved city and showing off a bit of local pride.
  • Paint Swatches and Fabric Samples: For us, poring over paint swatches and fabric samples is our idea of a good time! We carefully selected a few that perfectly capture the current style and color palette of our home, showcasing our passion for design.
  • House Key: There’s arguably no more sentimental object than the key to our home. It symbolizes security, belonging, and the foundation of countless memories. (Although, we admit, we altered the tip of it in Photoshop because, well, we’re a little paranoid about security!)
  • Current House Photo: Of course, we had to squeeze in a photo of our actual current house. It was essential to feature that iconic happy yellow door somewhere in the header, a symbol of our bright and welcoming home.
  • Ceramic Rhino: A distinctive white ceramic rhino has, rather unexpectedly, become a kind of mascot for us at this point – at least after Burger and our dearly departed ceramic dog. It adds a touch of quirky personality that truly represents our style.

Our Custom Background: A Subtle Homage to Our History

As for the blog’s new background, we created it as a subtle yet meaningful homage to our previous logo. Remember that iconic little YHL heart? The intricate background pattern is actually composed of a gazillion of those tiny hearts, laid out at all different angles to form an abstract and elegant pattern. It’s a testament to our roots, subtly woven into the fabric of our new digital presence.

Enhanced Functionality: New Features for an Improved Experience

Beyond the visual refresh, we’ve also introduced a host of functional improvements and brand-new features designed to make your time on our blog more enjoyable and productive. Here are the actual functional changes we’ve implemented:

1. Introducing Young House Life: Your Daily Dose of Our World

We’ve added a brand-new section called Young House Life (you’ll spot the “Life” title prominently under the header on the right side of the page). This new area is designed to serve as a dedicated space for “mundane everyday happenings.” Here, you’ll find more frequent, informal updates, primarily sharing delightful Clara & Burger pics/videos, along with behind-the-scenes blog insights, personal anecdotes, and other odds and ends that might not be extensive enough for a full-blown Young House Love post on the main site. You know how much we love to over-share, and this gives us the perfect outlet! But don’t worry, this doesn’t mean Clara, Burger, or other significant life events like vacations and anniversaries will suddenly disappear from the main site. Those aspects have always been a huge part of who we are, and they will absolutely continue to be shared here. Think of Young House Life as a little “bonus footage” spot, offering an extra glimpse into our world. Oh, and it comes with a separate feed address for those who prefer to subscribe to those updates directly in their reader.

2. Comprehensive Paint Color Palette Page

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve finally created a dedicated paint color page! This comprehensive resource meticulously lists all the paint colors we’ve used throughout this house, making it incredibly easy for you to find inspiration and replicate our favorite hues. This page is conveniently linked directly from our sidebar, ensuring effortless access. We’ve often received questions about our paint choices, and this new feature aims to be a definitive guide, similar to the one we made for our first house, providing a valuable resource for your own decorating endeavors.

3. Curated Home Source List: Where We Found Everything

Another highly requested feature we’ve brought to life is a dedicated source list. This invaluable page details where we sourced nearly every single item, piece of furniture, and decor element in our current house. From big-ticket items to the smallest finishing touches, if it’s in our home, you’ll likely find its origin here. Just like the one we meticulously crafted for our first house, this list is designed to be an ultimate resource for anyone looking to achieve a similar style or find specific items. This comprehensive list is also conveniently linked up on the sidebar, putting all the sourcing information at your fingertips.

4. Discover Our Favorite Posts: Handpicked Archive Gems

We’ve added a fantastic “Fav. Posts” button, also located prominently on the sidebar. This new feature showcases a curated selection of our most beloved posts, complete with little thumbnails and direct links. Our intention is to update this section every month or so with new favorites, reflecting our ever-evolving preferences and ensuring fresh content discovery. We implemented this because we’ve heard from numerous readers who expressed a desire to explore our extensive archives but weren’t quite sure where to begin or what hidden gems were worth digging around for. Now, you have a handpicked guide to some of our all-time best content, making it easier than ever to dive into years of DIY inspiration and home transformations.

5. Expanded Video Content Access: All Your Favorite Videos in One Place

To further enhance content accessibility, we’ve also added a dedicated “Videos” button on the sidebar. This button features thumbnails of a few of our most popular videos, offering a visual gateway to our dynamic multimedia content. Previously, all our videos were accessible from a bar located under the header. However, as we moved some other crucial elements up to that prime spot, we realized that our video content could “breathe” better and be more intuitively discovered in a dedicated space below. Now, you can easily access our entire video library by simply clicking the link at the bottom of this new button, providing a streamlined way to enjoy our video tutorials, tours, and more.

6. Giving Back: Supporting Causes We Cherish

One of the features we’re most proud to introduce is the “Giving Back” button. This dedicated section allows us to share the love and highlight three charities that we are absolutely thrilled to support. Each organization was carefully chosen because they represent causes deeply meaningful to us: homes, children, and dogs. We are committed to making an annual donation of $1,000 to the Richmond Habitat For Humanity, along with $500 each to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Richmond SPCA. We wholeheartedly encourage our readers to explore these incredible organizations and consider supporting their vital work. You can easily donate directly here for Richmond Habitat, here for St. Jude, and here for Richmond SPCA. Alternatively, you can find a local Habitat for Humanity or SPCA in your area here and here, respectively.

7. Refined Sidebar Elements & “Tweetersiks”: Aesthetic and Functional Tweaks

In addition to all the new features, we’ve taken the time to retool and refresh many of the existing buttons and elements that have always graced our sidebar. Familiar buttons, like the popular “House Crashing” one, have received updated images, typography, and color schemes, making them feel fresh and modern. While these updates are more decorative and fun than strictly functional, they contribute significantly to the overall cohesive and polished new look. And speaking of fun, we’ve also unveiled a new Twitter button, playfully renamed “Tweetersiks.” Oh yeah, we’ve officially out-punned Mr. Tom Petersik himself (my dear old dad!). It’s these little touches of personality that make our blog uniquely ours.

8. Seamless Content Navigation with Comprehensive Pagination

Finally, we were inspired by the thoughtful design of Kate over at Centsational Girl to add a robust and thorough pagination capability to our blog. This means you can now effortlessly click back through our archives all the way to the very first post we ever published. So, if you happen to have a year to spare and a burning desire to read through over 2,000 blog posts, the power is now yours! This feature vastly improves the discoverability of our older content, allowing both new and long-time readers to delve deep into the history and evolution of our blog at their own pace.

What’s Next: Our Renovation Roadmap and Future Plans

So, there it is – our brand new digital home! Of course, like any good home improvement project, our blog-to-do list still has a bunch of exciting items on it. Here are just a few things that we’re hoping to roll out in the next few months (or, being realistic about how long these things can sometimes take us, perhaps even years, haha!):

  • Project Gallery Overhaul: We plan to completely “renovate” our Projects page. Our vision is to transform it into a visually rich gallery, featuring compelling images alongside the project descriptions, rather than just a dizzying list of crazy links. Can you believe we’ve tackled over 500 projects since we started? This update will make it much easier to browse and get inspired.
  • Mood Boards & Room Gallery Design Update: The designs and headers on our popular Mood Boards and Room Gallery pages are still rocking the old tan stripes. We’re eager to update these sections to align with our new aesthetic, ensuring a consistent and fresh look across the entire site.
  • Expanding the Room Gallery with Reader Redesigns: We have an incredible backlog of over 100 amazing Reader Redesigns in our archives just waiting to be added to our Room Gallery. This will be a significant undertaking, but one we’re excited about, as it allows us to showcase even more real-life inspiration from our wonderful community.

These upcoming projects should definitely keep us busy for a while. And let’s not forget, we still have our $6 cabinets to finish! We might just switch back over to hands-on DIY projects for at least a little bit. While web development can be incredibly fun (especially when you’re “in the zone”), there’s truly nothing quite like the tangible satisfaction of paint under your fingernails and sawdust flying through the air. We genuinely hope you guys love the new look as much as we do. Has anyone else embarked on a little site tweaking adventure lately? Any new color schemes or functionalities that have made you giddy in that “it’s 2:52 AM and we’re still working on this post” kind of way? Not that *we* are, of course. That would be completely irresponsible parenting!
