Transforming Spaces: Our Kitchen & Laundry Room Now Gleam with Stunning Cork Floors
The air is filled with a sense of accomplishment! After weeks of dedicated effort, the much-anticipated cork flooring in both our kitchen and laundry room is finally complete. This marks a significant milestone in our ongoing home renovation journey, bringing a blend of natural beauty, comfort, and sustainability to these high-traffic areas.

While the major installation phase is behind us, we acknowledge that a few essential finishing touches remain. The next steps involve meticulously adding shoe molding, seamlessly integrating thresholds between rooms, and applying a robust protective sealer. These aren’t mere “details”; they are crucial elements that will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also significantly contribute to the longevity and durability of our beautiful new floors. With these final steps on the horizon, we’re thrilled to finally envision the complete transformation of these vital spaces. Huzzah!

Capturing the Essence: The Challenge of Photographing Cork’s True Beauty
One of the more challenging aspects of documenting this project has been accurately capturing the cork flooring’s true essence through photography. In person, it boasts a rich, deep mocha color, reminiscent of luxurious brown leather. The pattern isn’t overtly defined; rather, it’s a subtle, soft movement that adds depth and organic charm. Reproducing this authentic look in photographs has proven tricky, as lighting and camera settings can significantly alter its appearance. We’ve found that the videos from our previous post offer the most accurate depiction, but we’re continually experimenting to bring you photos that are as true to life as possible. We’re confident that with a bit more practice, we’ll master the art of photographing this stunning cork and convey its genuine beauty.
This natural material possesses an unparalleled warmth and character, making it a truly unique choice for contemporary homes seeking both style and functionality. The depth of the mocha tone interacts beautifully with varying light conditions, revealing new nuances throughout the day. It’s a testament to cork’s versatility that it can appear both rustic and refined, adapting to the overall aesthetic of the space it inhabits. We believe its inherent ability to blend seamlessly into various design styles while offering unique textural interest is one of its greatest strengths.
A Smooth Finish: The Final Stages of Cork Installation
The final stages of the cork flooring installation, specifically in the corner of the kitchen and our compact laundry room, followed a methodology very similar to what we detailed in our comprehensive kitchen corking guide. However, a moment of mild panic arose as we realized our cork plank supply was running critically low. To ensure we didn’t run out before reaching the finish line, we strategically utilized remnant planks – leftover cuts from the main kitchen area – along the entire left wall. This resourceful approach allowed us to conserve our remaining full planks and complete the project without a hitch.

Incredibly, we completed the installation with approximately four planks to spare. The margin was astonishingly close, underscoring the importance of careful planning and efficient use of materials in any DIY flooring project. We’re immensely grateful to have these extra planks as backups, and our plan is to seal them thoroughly to ensure they remain protected and ready should they ever be needed for future repairs or touch-ups. Cork is remarkably resilient; it can be sanded, restained, and resealed decades down the line if it experiences significant wear. This inherent renewability is why 40-year-old and even 100-year-old cork floors are not uncommon, a reassuring fact for those who might perceive cork as a modern, untested material. Its historical use and proven durability offer peace of mind, making it an excellent long-term investment for any home.
The Laundry Room’s Remarkable Transformation: Before & After Cork Flooring
The impact of the new cork floors in our laundry room is truly astounding. Previously, we were quite pleased with the space, especially after all the hard work we put into its initial renovation (you can explore more about the rest of the room’s transformation here). However, the addition of the cork flooring has elevated it to an entirely new level. It’s not just a functional space anymore; it now exudes warmth, style, and an inviting atmosphere. The rich mocha tone brings an unexpected touch of luxury to a room often overlooked in terms of design. Below, you can see the dramatic “before” and “after” contrast:

And now, after the gorgeous cork installation:

As this laundry room doubles as our primary entryway into the house, the difference is immediately noticeable and deeply appreciated. Stepping onto the rich cork floors now feels like a gentle whisper of “welcome home,” a stark contrast to the utilitarian feel of the previous flooring. The soft, quiet nature of cork instantly enhances the feeling of comfort and tranquility upon entering. And for those curious about the laundry basket, it’s currently in the bedroom, brimming with “flu clothes” that have been freshly washed but are still awaiting their proper place. Such is the reality of a busy home!

The Home Stretch: Winding Down the Kitchen Renovation
Having previously shared detailed accounts of where and why we chose our specific cork flooring here, and provided an in-depth look at its installation process, complete with a video, here, this post truly signifies a collective sigh of relief. The completion of this flooring project marks the winding down of the last major undertaking in our expansive kitchen renovation. It’s a moment to pause and appreciate the immense progress we’ve made since beginning this ambitious project on October 5th.
Beyond the essential floor tasks, our remaining to-do list consists of a series of smaller, yet equally impactful, design enhancements. These include adding decorative wood molding to the back of the peninsula, deciding on the perfect window treatment for above the sink, potentially painting our kitchen stools for a fresh look, exploring creative ideas for the side of the pantry, and bringing in a comfortable chair and a cozy rug for the fireplace side of the room. These elements, while minor in comparison to the flooring, are what truly personalize a space and make it feel uniquely ours. We are incredibly excited to share a comprehensive collection of before-and-after photographs, alongside a detailed budget and time breakdown, once we can officially declare this kitchen project complete.
From Drab to Dream: A Journey of Home Transformation
It’s truly incredible to reflect on how far this space has come. Do you remember when we first moved in, and the kitchen looked like this?

This shot, taken a little further back and from a slightly different angle, offers a semi-comparable glimpse into its former state. There’s arguably nothing more gratifying than transforming a room that initially felt alien and uninspired into a space that profoundly reflects your personality and truly feels like home. The journey of making a house truly your own is a labor of love, marked by countless decisions, challenges, and moments of immense satisfaction. The current view captures that transformation perfectly, illustrating how thoughtful design and hard work can breathe new life into an entire space.

A Unified Vision: Harmonizing Our Home’s Flooring
Our long-term vision for the home’s flooring extends beyond these newly corked spaces. We are staunch advocates for seamless flooring transitions and a cohesive aesthetic throughout a home. In our first house, we upgraded to the same dark mocha wood throughout, creating a beautifully open and expansive flow. We plan to replicate this harmonious approach here. Eventually, we intend to refinish the remaining disparate wood floors in this house to match the rich mocha color of our new cork. This strategic choice will unify the various flooring materials – cork in some rooms, traditional hardwoods in others – under a consistent, elegant tone. The goal is to eliminate any visual choppiness or fragmented feelings between spaces, fostering a sense of continuous flow and sophisticated design that truly ties the entire home together. This thoughtful approach ensures that every step within our home feels integrated and inviting.
Living with Cork: A Practical & Eco-Friendly Flooring Choice
From a usability and functional standpoint, we couldn’t be happier with our cork floors so far. The rich, deep color has breathed incredible life into what was once a somewhat whitewashed space, adding a layer of sophistication and warmth. Beyond aesthetics, the practical benefits are numerous and compelling:
- Pet-Friendly: Even with our beloved dog, Burger, running around, we’ve observed no scratches or dings from his nails, a testament to cork’s resilient surface.
- Impact Resistance: Accidental drops of household items haven’t resulted in any noticeable dents, showcasing its impressive ability to absorb impact.
- Exceptional Comfort: Its inherent elasticity provides a remarkably soft and forgiving surface underfoot, offering a welcome reprieve for tired feet and aching knees. This makes standing for long periods in the kitchen much more comfortable.
- Enhanced Durability: While already robust, we anticipate its durability will significantly increase once we apply the protective sealer, guarding against spills and wear.
- Eco-Friendly & Sustainable: Cork is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees, a process that doesn’t harm the tree, allowing it to regenerate its bark. This makes it an incredibly sustainable and environmentally conscious flooring choice.
- Sound Dampening: Cork naturally absorbs sound, contributing to a quieter and more peaceful home environment, especially beneficial in busy areas like the kitchen and laundry room.
We’re committed to keeping you updated on our long-term experience living with these floors, including the addition of shoe molding, thresholds, and those final coats of protective sealer. As for us, this past weekend was spent largely recuperating on the sofa, battling a lingering flu after squeezing in those last few cork boards. However, with the cork floors now completed, our spirits are definitely lifted, and we’re steadily getting back to feeling like ourselves again! Onward to the next chapter of home improvement!
