Elevating Our Home Office with Fjalkinge Bookshelves

Transforming Our Home Office: The IKEA Fjälkinge Storage Revolution

Our home office has recently undergone perhaps its most significant functional upgrade since we first began envisioning its potential back in March. The transformation is profound: we now boast six expansive shelves and six extra-long, soft-close drawers, seamlessly integrated thanks to two tall, sleek storage systems that elegantly flank the main desk. This isn’t just about adding furniture; it’s about achieving a harmonious blend of balanced aesthetics and unparalleled utility. Our previously bare wall, a constant source of frustration, has been revitalized into a powerhouse of organization and style. In essence, we are absolutely delighted with the outcome, and those luxurious soft-close drawers? They are truly the crowning touch on our office makeover.

While the journey to our dream office isn’t entirely complete – we still anticipate adding window treatments, a cozy rug, captivating art, an updated ceiling fixture, and more – we’ve made remarkable strides, advancing significantly from where we stood just a week ago. It might sound peculiar, but the arrival of Teddy seemed to be the catalyst that broke us out of our furniture placement rut, providing us with a fresh perspective and a clear path forward. It’s fascinating how some rooms, like our sunroom with its raised and planked ceiling, reveal their design plans with surprising ease, while others, like this office, demand endless reconsideration and self-doubt. This room, in particular, tested our patience and creativity a hundred times over.

Evolving Office Dreams: From Multifunctional Hub to Dedicated Workspace

When we last shared our office plans with you, our ambition was to repurpose a free curbside secretary’s desk into an innovative double-sided floating desk, designed to accommodate both of us. At the time, this felt like the optimal strategy to maximize functionality within the space, aiming to create the hyper-efficient home office we believed we needed.

However, as is often the case with creative projects, our perspectives began to shift, evolving repeatedly. Much like our kitchen banquette concept in our previous residence, our persistent hesitation to commit to the initial office layout was a strong indicator that we hadn’t yet discovered the ideal solution. Consequently, we chose to pause and refrain from any significant changes until we had absolute clarity on our desired direction for this crucial room. This is where Teddy’s influence became significant. As we alluded to in a previous post, our evolving business objectives had become much sharper and more defined. The initial vision of a multi-tasking craft/photography studio combined with two full-time desks suddenly seemed unnecessarily ambitious and somewhat overblown. What we truly craved from this space was a dedicated, comfortable desk area for each of us, allowing ample room to spread out and truly claim as our own. Coupled with this, we yearned for abundant storage solutions to finally bring order and organization back into our lives. Since moving in, our work essentials and important files had been scattered across various makeshift locations – from kitchen cabinets to the dining room buffet, and even an upstairs storage room.

Redefining Functionality: A Simpler, More Intentional Layout

Armed with these refined goals, we decided to embrace a more flexible approach, allowing the room’s natural flow to guide our decisions. The notion of cramming four or five distinct zones into this single room was abandoned. Our first bold move was to rotate the large desk 90 degrees, positioning it elegantly in the center of the bay window.

It was no surprise when this seemingly minor adjustment clicked into place, instantly feeling right. Deep down, this orientation had been our instinct all along. However, we had initially resisted it, convinced that a long-wise placement was the only way to accommodate two people effectively. We also worried it might interfere with the long wall, given the previous pressure to force that area into a triple-tasking zone.

Adjusted home office desk placement

With our newly simplified vision for the room, gazing at that side wall no longer prompted questions about fitting multiple uses – a craft station, a photography zone, storage, and extra workspace. Instead, our sole objective was to establish a functional desk area and integrate robust storage. For over a year, I had been working at that West Elm desk in its original spot and had grown quite fond of it. While I’ve heard some comments like, “I wouldn’t want to face that wall when there are windows and views outside,” I genuinely prefer this particular location. So much so that I laid claim to this desk and insisted on keeping it right where it was, merely flanking it with two dedicated storage systems – an idea that, coincidentally, was one of our very first instincts for the space. Sherry was relieved not to contend with me for the coveted window desk, and we both immediately felt a profound sense of peace with this new direction. Finally. We were ready to move forward and bring this office vision to life.

The IKEA Fjälkinge Solution: Smart Storage for a Modern Office

After a thorough search, we decided on two IKEA Fjälkinge shelving units with drawers to serve as the storage flanking my desk. These units immediately impressed us with their solid construction – crafted from metal, each shelf boasts an impressive weight capacity of 110 lbs. Beyond their sturdiness, their extreme functionality was a major draw, allowing us to customize them with as many soft-close drawers as we desired. And yes, the luxurious soft-close feature undeniably adds a touch of sophistication to our workspace. Furthermore, these units were notably wider than most standard bookcases or storage units we encountered, a dimension that perfectly suited our specific space requirements. The decision, in the end, was remarkably straightforward.

Our decision made, off to IKEA we went! This trip marked a momentous first for Teddy, and as an extra treat, it wasn’t even our usual local IKEA. No, our preferred store was out of stock, so we embarked on an additional 90-minute drive to a branch in Maryland. My strained smile in the photo below poorly masks my apprehension about braving the infamous beltway traffic, but we meticulously timed our journey to minimize congestion, and thankfully, it wasn’t too bad in the end.

Here’s a glimpse of our substantial haul back home, excluding a few other miscellaneous purchases. The large boxes in the background, alongside the long, flat packs, contain the shelving units themselves, while the four smaller boxes upfront hold the pairs of drawers.

Assembly & Integration: Building Our Dream Office Storage

Assembling the shelving frames themselves proved relatively straightforward, though it definitely required an extra set of hands to stabilize the posts while the base and top sections were securely screwed into place. What my invaluable assistant may lack in sustained endurance, she more than compensates for with an abundance of cuteness and unwavering encouragement.

Here’s how the two frames looked once they were initially upright, with a couple of the bottom shelves already installed. We briefly considered leaving a bit more ‘breathing room’ between the desk and the shelves, but I ultimately preferred the cozy, integrated feel of having them abutted. This close proximity also significantly enhances the accessibility of the shelves from my desk, further cementing my belief that my workspace is superior to Sherry’s floating desk. #officerivalry, of course.

Before proceeding with additional shelves or assembling the drawers, we took a crucial moment to ensure both units were perfectly leveled, utilizing the adjustable feet conveniently located on their bases. Following this, we securely anchored both shelving units to the wall. Given their all-metal construction, which makes them both exceptionally solid and remarkably heavy, preventing any risk of them toppling over was a top priority for safety and stability.

Each unit comes standard with six shelves, including the top and bottom panels, with the option to purchase additional ones. However, we found the evenly spaced arrangement depicted in the IKEA catalog and website images to be perfectly suited for our aesthetic and functional needs, so we stuck with the default configuration.

This image shows the shelving units pre-drawer installation. The beauty of the Fjälkinge system is the ability to integrate drawers into any of the middle or bottom shelves, providing essential concealed storage – a feature we knew would be absolutely vital for this room. My collection of accounting files and various piles of receipts, frankly, are not what one would describe as aesthetically pleasing, making discrete storage a necessity.

By this stage of the construction process, Clara had long since lost interest in assisting, but at least she remained nearby, offering her comforting presence. Building the drawers, it turns out, was actually the most intricate and screw-heavy part of the entire assembly.

After successfully completing the first two drawers, I decided that the most efficient approach for the remaining six would be to tackle them all at once, creating an assembly line. While I am convinced this was indeed the quicker method, I must admit, I felt a slight wave of intimidation upon unboxing all the components and seeing the sheer volume of materials laid out before me.

The Final Reveal: A Harmonious and Productive Workspace

And here it is: everything reassembled, tidied, and finally in its rightful place. Both of us were immediately thrilled with the outcome. It simply felt right. We were, at long last, creating an office that truly aligned with how we now envisioned ourselves working, supporting our evolving professional needs and personal preferences.

Once we liberated ourselves from the constraints of sharing a single desk or reserving a dedicated space for photography and crafts – both activities we can easily perform at our kitchen or dining room tables, or even at our individual desks by simply moving our laptops – it opened up a world of design possibilities. This newfound freedom allowed us to introduce a beautiful sense of symmetry to both the window wall and the expansive blank wall to the left. The two tall bookcases now subtly echo the two tall windows on the opposite side of the room, creating a visual balance that is incredibly satisfying. More importantly, these units are brimming with both accessible open shelves and discreet concealed storage, perfectly addressing our organizational needs.

In many ways, this current configuration represents a lighter, more adaptable iteration of the wall-to-wall built-ins we had previously considered. We appreciate that this version offers a breezier aesthetic and, crucially, provides greater flexibility should our business requirements or personal goals evolve in the future. And for continuity, our wall of magnet boards continues to serve its purpose effectively, integrating seamlessly into the updated design.

We did need to relocate our file and printer cabinet to the other side of the main doorway to prevent it from crowding the newly installed bookcases. Coincidentally, this is where it resided when we initially moved in, bringing a nice sense of full circle to its placement. While it could certainly benefit from some art above it, for now, I’m simply content that I haven’t sacrificed my essential file storage and that we still have a convenient spot for our wireless printer.

The only aspect that initially felt slightly “off” to me was the overwhelming whiteness of everything. While our intention is definitely a light and bright office environment, without any personal touches on those expansive white shelves, the space felt a little stark and uninviting. That is, until Sherry, with her keen eye for decor, worked her magic. Our talented accessorizing wife truly came to the rescue! Now, we just need to add a plush rug, some elegant window treatments, a few carefully selected pieces of wall art, a stylish ceiling fixture, and a discreet floor outlet for the desk, and I believe our office transformation will be complete. This is an absolutely amazing achievement, especially considering that just a week ago, I would have predicted it might take us another year to fully resolve this entire office dilemma.

We have many more details to share about how we meticulously organized this room, and we’re planning to reveal all those insights later in the week. Both of us embraced an almost ‘organizing-crazy’ mindset, now that we finally have six dedicated shelves and twelve glorious drawers – eight within the bookcases and four integrated into the desk – in addition to our trusty filing and printer cabinet. There’s even talk of creating a few animated GIFs of the organization process, so if that doesn’t ignite your excitement on this sunny Monday morning, I’m not entirely sure what will. Donuts? Yes, donuts usually do the trick.
