Our Board & Batten Project Kicks Off

It’s an exciting time for DIY enthusiasts, especially when the spirit of the (completely unofficial, but incredibly inspiring) Pinterest Challenge sparks a wave of creativity! Conceived by the brilliant Katie, this challenge encourages us all to move beyond endless pinning and truly *start doing*. And this season, we embraced the call wholeheartedly, tackling our most ambitious project yet: transforming our once-bare hallway with the timeless charm of board and batten. Get ready to be inspired!

Revitalizing Your Space: The Power of Board and Batten

There’s nothing quite like a well-executed DIY project to inject personality and style into a forgotten corner of your home. Our hallway, a high-traffic area we navigate countless times a day, was a prime candidate for a much-needed aesthetic upgrade. It was functional, certainly, but lacked character, dimension, and that undeniable “wow” factor. We knew board and batten was the answer.

This classic wall treatment, often associated with a farmhouse or traditional aesthetic, is surprisingly versatile and can elevate any interior design style. It involves attaching thin strips of wood (battens) over a flat board, or directly onto the wall, to create a panelled look. The result is instant architectural interest, transforming a flat, uninspired wall into a dynamic, textured surface that truly captivates the eye. Just a week after embarking on this challenge, our hallway now boasts a stunning transformation, radiating warmth and sophistication.

Admittedly, I’ve found myself sitting on the floor, mesmerized by the subtle elegance it brings. It’s truly transformative.

For those who have already experienced the magic of board and batten or wainscoting, the sentiment that “pictures don’t do it justice” rings incredibly true. While photographs offer a glimpse, they can’t fully capture the incredible dimension and tactile quality that this wall treatment introduces. In person, the layered effect creates shadows and depth that dramatically enhance the space, making a formerly drab hallway feel polished, inviting, and infinitely more interesting.

Navigating Your Board and Batten Journey: Inspiration and Execution

When it came to executing our board and batten vision, we were fortunate to find a wealth of resources. The beauty of the DIY community is the generous sharing of knowledge, and there’s no shortage of fantastic tutorials available online. In the spirit of the Pinterest Challenge – or “Pintspiration,” as we like to call it – we gathered insights from several talented bloggers, absorbing their wisdom before adding our own unique spin to the project. While we still have some final touches, like hanging more art, the core transformation is complete.

Before diving in, thorough research is paramount. Understanding different approaches and techniques can save time, effort, and materials. Here’s a rundown of some of the invaluable tutorials that guided our planning and execution:

  1. **Ana-White:** Ana is a powerhouse in DIY furniture and home projects. Her “DIY Board and Batten, Ana-Style” tutorial provided detailed plans and a practical approach for a sturdy installation.
  2. **Thrifty Decor Chick:** Sara is known for her budget-friendly and stylish transformations. Her “How to Install Board and Batten” post offered excellent tips on achieving a high-end look without breaking the bank.
  3. **Centsational Girl:** Kate’s blog, now Centsational Style, is a go-to for elegant and sophisticated home decor. Her “Board and Batten Complete” article inspired us with her impeccable eye for detail and design.
  4. **Decor Chick:** Emily’s “Multipurpose Room Progress: Board and Batten” offered practical insights, especially valuable for understanding the impact of board and batten in various room configurations.

These resources provided a solid foundation, allowing us to confidently adapt strategies to our specific hallway dimensions and design preferences. While we’ll be sharing a more comprehensive, step-by-step tutorial, including a detailed video of our entire process and a budget breakdown in a follow-up post, we can assure you that this project is remarkably achievable for any DIY enthusiast. Although the transformation spanned nearly a full week, each individual step was manageable. The key is to approach it methodically, one stage at a time. Our general sequence of steps included:

  • Meticulously measuring the hallway and gathering all necessary materials, from wood planks to fasteners and finishing supplies.
  • Carefully marking the wall for placement and ensuring the top rails were perfectly level before securely attaching them.
  • Precisely cutting the vertical battens, applying wood glue, and nailing them firmly into place, ensuring consistent spacing.
  • Filling all nail holes with wood filler and caulking every seam and crack for a seamless, professional finish.
  • Sanding the filled holes smooth and applying a high-quality primer to all newly installed wood elements.
  • Painting the board and batten and the walls below the top rail in a crisp, clean white.
  • Applying our chosen color to the walls above the rail (a tip for future projects: painting this section beforehand can streamline the process!).

The Perfect Palette: Benjamin Moore Moonshine

Choosing the right color for the walls above the board and batten was crucial to achieving the desired aesthetic. We opted for Benjamin Moore’s “Moonshine,” a soft platinum gray that harmonizes beautifully with the existing color in our adjoining framed hallway. This choice creates a cohesive and open feel, preventing the small hallway from feeling too enclosed. We specifically avoided anything too dark, aiming for an expansive yet inviting atmosphere.

The gentle contrast between the soft gray and the crisp white board and batten creates a sophisticated tone-on-tone look. This subtle interplay of shades, combined with the newfound dimension of the board and batten, adds an incredible amount of interest without being overly dramatic. It’s a testament to how even a seemingly small change can profoundly impact the overall ambiance of a space. *Note: As you can see in some of the “after” pictures, we’re still in the process of painting the trim in the adjacent hallway to match the pure white of the new board and batten, ensuring a perfectly unified look.*

What we can confidently say is: anyone can do this! While it required a fair amount of time and dedication, none of the steps were overly complicated. Thank goodness, or it might have been the very first Pinterest Challenge we didn’t manage to finish! Haha!
