Behind the Lens: Unveiling the Secrets of a Professional Home Magazine Photoshoot
As John recently shared, our home was recently transformed into a vibrant set for a whirlwind 48-hour photoshoot with Do It Yourself Magazine. This exhilarating experience was nothing short of eye-opening, offering us a rare glimpse into the meticulous world of professional home styling and photography. They say the best way to learn is to dive in headfirst, and that’s precisely what we did. From assisting with equipment to deciphering the unique language of photo styling, we absorbed every detail. These invaluable mental notes, we’re sure, will prove incredibly useful not only for future enhancements to our own home but also for helping you envision and virtually redecorate your spaces!
We’re thrilled to pull back the curtain and share some fascinating behind-the-scenes insights from our two-day DIY extravaganza. Captured through a few candid shots I managed to snag over the real photographer’s shoulder, these observations will illuminate the magic and meticulous planning that goes into creating those perfect magazine spreads.
Insider Secrets of Home Styling: What Magazines Don’t Always Show
1. The Art of Prop Styling: Curating the Perfect Shot
One of the most surprising revelations from our photoshoot was learning that virtually every national magazine subtly, or sometimes significantly, “tweaks” a house before capturing it on film. This meticulous process often involves a prop stylist who might arrive days in advance (though for our DIY shoot, it was a more last-minute affair). Everything from fresh flowers and elegant vases to luxurious table runners and even area rugs can be brought in to inject that crucial “pop” into the photographs. It’s about more than just decoration; it’s about creating a visual narrative and enhancing the existing beauty of a space with carefully selected elements.

Take our den, for instance (pictured above). The stylists skillfully rearranged a few existing items, then introduced vibrant fresh flowers and a charming green ceramic tray (sourced from Pottery Barn) onto one of our ottomans. These additions instantly boosted the room’s color palette and overall appeal. While many of these purchased items are typically returned after the shoot, we now know exactly where to find that adorable tray should we decide to make it a permanent fixture in our home. This practice highlights how magazines use temporary additions to achieve a specific aesthetic, demonstrating the power of thoughtful accessorizing.
2. Selling a Lifestyle: Beyond Just Interior Design
Home magazines aren’t simply showcasing stylish rooms; they’re selling an aspirational lifestyle. This is why you’ll frequently notice subtle cues designed to evoke a sense of comfortable living: a pitcher of iced tea by a poolside, or a half-read book casually placed by the bed. These details invite readers to imagine themselves living in such an idyllic setting. In our sunroom, the stylists artfully arranged a sweet little bowl of red grapes and two playfully opened bottles of pink lemonade, complemented by gorgeous purple hydrangeas. These simple elements weren’t just decorative; they were carefully chosen to project a casual, lived-in, and inviting atmosphere, making the space feel more authentic and relatable.

3. The Power of Blooms: There’s No Such Thing as Too Many Flowers
If there’s one thing we learned, it’s that flowers are paramount in magazine styling. From delicate floating vases to charming blue pitchers, blooms graced nearly every available container in our home. Beth, the lead stylist, even had her favorite florist in Iowa (where DIY Magazine is based) ship an impressive array of fresh flowers to our house on ice, ensuring their pristine condition for the big day(s). We also picked up a quirky little photoshoot phrase about floral arrangements: if a single bloom is staring directly into the camera, someone will playfully shout, “Hey, that flower’s lookin’ at me!” At this point, a team member will step in front of the lens and gently adjust the flower, tilting it slightly left or right to avoid a perfectly symmetrical, almost “contrived” look that can appear unnatural. This attention to detail ensures the florals feel organic and effortless.
It was fascinating to observe the unique lingo and methods employed by the stylists. I found myself taking literal notes, feeling as though I was learning the fabulous language of extremely stylish aliens. They even assigned sexes to inanimate objects – “she wants to go here” or “I think he’s too dominant there, let’s lose him.” Such playful anthropomorphism added an extra layer of charm to the fast-paced, creative environment.

4. Culinary Canvas: Food as an Essential Styling Element
Just like flowers, food plays an equally significant and often abundant role in home magazine photoshoots. It’s not merely about sustenance; it’s about creating an atmosphere of warmth, hospitality, and life. Beth and Cat, our incredible styling team, embarked on a dedicated food run, returning with bags full of delights. We saw everything from rustic loaves of artisan bread to adorable cupcakes sourced from a local bakery. But modern styling extends beyond traditional fruits and baked goods. Stylists are increasingly incorporating more playful and unexpected treats, like vibrant gummy bears displayed elegantly in a glass jar in our sunroom. They even acquired some mini Oreos, though a hungry crew (us included!) managed to devour them before they could make it to the set. All that propping and shooting certainly works up quite an appetite!

5. Seasonal Transformations: Adapting Decor to the Moment
Props and styling elements are often highly dependent on the season the feature will represent. Since our living and dining room was destined for a spring issue, Beth and Cat diligently worked to transform our naturally neutral, seasonless space into something vibrant and fresh. The “before and after” of this room perfectly illustrates the power of seasonal styling.

…to a cheerful, spring-infused room brimming with personality and bright pops of color:

Observing this transformation provided several key insights:
- **Strategic Shelf Styling:** The items on our floating shelves above the dining table were meticulously arranged to be photographed head-on. From a side view, one could clearly discern the intentional voids where items were removed to prevent visual conflict with the pendant light and the tall floral centerpiece on the table. This illustrates how stylists prioritize the camera’s perspective above all else.
- **The Power of a Rug:** The most impactful change in the living room was the rug swap. Beth and Cat replaced our standard brown 5×8 rug with a lighter, brighter alternative: the yellow Moorish Tile rug from Pottery Barn. We were thrilled to discover it was a floor model, allowing us to purchase it at a significant discount! Our trusty old brown rug now enjoys a new life in the guest bedroom, providing a cozy, foot-friendly experience, especially appreciated during the colder months when our hardwood floors can be quite chilly.
- **Angles for the Lens:** The slipper chair, for example, was angled perfectly for the shot. In reality, however, this angle would actually block the entryway to the hall leading to our bedrooms. This brings us to our next crucial point…
6. The Camera’s Illusion: What Looks Balanced Isn’t Always Real
It’s important to remember that things might appear perfectly balanced and centered through the camera’s lens, but in real life, this is often far from the truth! Here’s an honest glimpse of our living room after some of the “hero shots” – a term we learned for the key images that will receive the most emphasis in the magazine article – were captured. Because the camera is often positioned at various angles, objects frequently need to be shifted, tilted, or strategically placed to create a harmonious composition for the lens. What looks flawless on camera often translates to a somewhat illogical or “off” arrangement in person. It’s all about creating an optical illusion for the perfect photograph.

7. Resourceful Styling: The Art of Borrowing and Repurposing
Resourcefulness is a cornerstone of professional styling. When the photographer suggested adding a rug to break up the expanse of hardwood in the kitchen, a quick solution was needed. Instead of buying a new one, someone cleverly “borrowed” our little 4×6 jute rug from the third bedroom. Perfecto! While they later shot the bedroom with the rug returned, the overall styling of each space was so distinct that the temporary relocation went unnoticed. This experience has certainly taught me to scrutinize every magazine I read for duplicate items! I often wonder how many vases and pillows are recycled throughout different rooms in a single feature, though Beth and her team truly made a concerted effort to use unique accessories in each space. This dedication was greatly appreciated, especially since we’re already gathering ideas for our next grand “par-tay” and planning to prop our house to the nines!

Our kitchen, too, underwent a magnificent transformation, looking more appetizing than a blooming onion from Outback Steakhouse! From elegant artisanal cheeses and artistically arranged artichokes to delicate mini roses placed strategically in the glass-fronted cabinet, no detail was overlooked. Even our sweet little burro tail plant, one of our favorite succulents, found a new home on the windowsill, a spot we loved so much we made it its permanent address.

The Enduring Magic of Styling
Ah, those were truly memorable days. Our home was filled with creamy cupcakes and generous chunks of cheddar, alongside vibrant pink pansies and playful peonies. It never looked so abundant, so thoughtfully curated. The transformation truly showcased the power of professional styling to elevate every corner of a space.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to Beth, Cat, Erik, and Piper for their tireless efforts and incredible talent in making our house look truly magazine-worthy. We are beyond excited to see all the stunning, real photographs in the upcoming Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter issues of Do It Yourself Magazine. Stay tuned for the big reveal, and perhaps use these insider tips to bring a little magazine magic to your own home!
