DIY Nursery Mirror Makeover: Transforming a $39 Find into a Charming Green Centerpiece
Welcome back to another exciting home project! We’re thrilled to share how we took a humble $39 Marshall’s mirror and gave it a complete personality transplant. Originally a bit too upscale and formal in its stark black finish, we envisioned something more playful, serene, and perfectly suited for our new nursery. The solution? A few coats of beautiful, deep asparagus green paint, transforming it into an instant focal point that radiates warmth and whimsy.

The Vision: Infusing Personality and Purpose into Nursery Decor
Our goal was clear: create a nursery space that feels inviting, calm, and inspiring for our little one. We believe that every element, even a simple mirror, contributes to the overall ambiance. The existing black frame, while elegant, didn’t quite align with the soft, natural aesthetic we were cultivating. We wanted a color that would not only complement our chosen curtain fabric but also evoke a sense of tranquility and growth, fitting for a baby’s room. This DIY mirror makeover proved to be a wonderfully straightforward process, even with its intricate details. While I won’t sugarcoat it – those charming, curvy openings definitely required a bit more time and patience than a basic rectangular frame – the end result was unequivocally worth every minute. This project was so satisfying, I would eagerly undertake it again without a moment’s hesitation. The transformation is truly delightful, and we absolutely adore how it enhances the nursery.
Choosing the Perfect Shade of Green for a Serene Nursery
Our inspiration for the mirror’s new hue came directly from the subtle, deeper green tones woven into the leaves of our nursery curtain fabric. This ensured a cohesive and harmonious design throughout the room. After much deliberation, we settled on a rich, deep-ish green called Behr’s Scotland Isle. To keep the project budget-friendly and ensure a low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) option suitable for a nursery, we had the color precisely matched to an inexpensive quart of Olympic’s No-VOC Premium Paint in a semi-gloss finish. Opting for a semi-gloss finish not only provides a subtle sheen that enhances the color’s depth but also offers increased durability and makes the surface easier to clean – a crucial consideration for any piece of furniture in a busy nursery.
Preparing for a Flawless Finish: The Painting Process
Given that our mirror was already painted (not stained), we confidently bypassed the priming step. This decision allowed us to avoid unnecessary primer fumes, which was particularly important for us during pregnancy. Skipping primer is a viable option when painting over an existing painted surface, as long as the original paint is sound and not prone to bleeding through. However, proper surface preparation remains paramount for optimal paint adhesion and a smooth finish. We meticulously roughed up the surface with a bit of high-grit (350) sandpaper. This light sanding creates a microscopic texture, giving the new paint something substantial to grip onto, preventing peeling or chipping down the line.
Note for other DIY enthusiasts: If you’re not expecting and not making over a mirror specifically for a nursery, you have even more options. A spray primer like Kilz followed by a few thin and even coats of spray paint in your desired color can yield a perfectly polished finished product with minimal effort. Just remember to always spray in a well-ventilated area, as those fumes are not ideal for anyone, pregnant or not. Safety first!
The Art of Hand Painting Intricate Details
As previously mentioned, I personally opted out of the spray paint approach due to its strong fumes and potential for uneven coverage on such a detailed piece. Instead, I embraced the more hands-on method of hand painting with a small craft brush. I deliberately left my usual 2-inch angled paintbrush in the tool drawer and reached for a tiny, less-than-one-inch brush from Michael’s, pulled from my dedicated craft drawer. This small brush proved to be invaluable for navigating all those intricate nooks, crannies, and delicate curves of the mirror frame. Precision was key to achieving a professional-looking finish.
The painting process involved applying two thin, even coats. After approximately two hours of focused work, the transformation was complete. I was looking at a gorgeously green mirror that appeared as if it had always been that vibrant color. Not an ounce of the original black paint bled through or peered around the cutouts, a testament to the tiny brush’s precision and careful application. To manage drips and ensure easy access to all sides of the frame, I strategically placed the mirror on a flat piece of cardboard. This ingenious setup allowed me to effortlessly spin the mirror around, ensuring every single edge that required green paint to cover the black was meticulously coated, guaranteeing a seamless and uniform finish.

Finishing Touches and Installation: Bringing the Vision to Life
Once the painting was complete, patience became the ultimate virtue. I allowed everything to fully dry and cure, refraining from even attempting to hang the mirror for a full 24 hours. This crucial drying period ensures the paint fully hardens, maximizing its durability and preventing any smudges or damage during installation. After the paint had thoroughly cured, I used a simple, straight-edged razor blade to carefully scrape away the minimal amount of paint that had inadvertently dripped from the frame onto the reflective surface of the mirror in the center. This technique allows for clean, precise removal without scratching the glass.
For installation, safety was our absolute priority, especially in a nursery. We used two heavy-duty anchors to securely fasten the mirror to the wall. The placement was intentional: we hung it directly across from the only window in the modestly-sized room. This strategic positioning maximizes the reflection of natural light, instantly making the space feel significantly more open, airy, and inviting – a clever design trick for smaller rooms.

The Aesthetic Impact: A Mirror Transformed into a Work of Art
The transformation is truly remarkable. We are absolutely delighted with how the deep green color harmonizes beautifully with the various tones present in our curtains, creating a cohesive and visually pleasing design narrative. Beyond its color, we adore the playful little shapes and shadows that the mirror’s intricate frame casts on the wall, adding an element of dynamic interest to the room. We’re confident our “beanette” will enjoy staring at these fascinating patterns as she grows! A delightful discovery was noticing the four charming little heart shapes around the mirror’s perimeter – details we had never even observed before we painted it green. The new color truly brings out the hidden beauty and intricate craftsmanship of the frame.

The smoothness of our paint job, achieved simply by applying two thin and even coats of latex paint with a small craft brush, truly speaks volumes about the power of patience and proper technique. Painting a frame or a mirror is genuinely one of the most simple yet incredibly rewarding DIY projects you can undertake. It offers immense creative freedom and the satisfaction of personalizing your space on a budget. Imagine the impact of painting a collection of frames or mirrors in bold, punchy colors and arranging them in a dynamic grid above your sofa! The possibilities are endless. These projects are especially “easy peasy” if the frames are less ornate than this particular piece, allowing for even quicker transformations.

Childproofing and Beyond: Ensuring a Safe and Stylish Nursery
So there you have it – our latest little nursery project, brought to life with nothing more than one affordable craft brush and a single quart of colorful semi-gloss paint. This project perfectly exemplifies how minor changes can make a huge impact on a room’s aesthetic and feel. It’s also important to address the future. We fully realize that as our “beanette” grows bigger and eventually begins to stand up in her crib (even with the mattress lowered), ensuring the mirror is even more securely fastened to the wall will be paramount for her safety. At that crucial point, our plan is to screw directly through the mirror frame and into the wall studs. We can then countersink the screw heads, fill them with putty, and touch them up with paint to completely conceal them. This method will make the mirror virtually impossible to yank off the wall, even by a determined adult, providing ultimate peace of mind. Stay tuned for all the upcoming childproofing adventures and creative solutions we’ll implement as Baby P grows more mobile and curious towards the end of 2010.

Complementary Nursery Elements: Organic Comfort and Style
Before we forget, did you happen to notice another wonderful addition to our nursery? We were thrilled to snag an awesome aqua-colored 100% organic crib sheet! Recognizing the practical need for a spare, we actually ordered two of them. We also picked up two matching 100% organic changing pad covers in the same delightful aqua hue. We absolutely adore the cheerful pop of color these organic linens add to the nursery without making the space feel too busy or cluttered. We had initially considered some patterned options for the bedding, but after carefully weighing them against the intricate scrollwork of the mirror and the vibrant print of the curtains, we realized that adding another pattern might simply be “a bit too much.” The solid aqua provides a refreshing contrast and allows the other decorative elements to truly shine.
The best part? After an extensive search, sleuthing out about twenty different organic crib sheet and changing pad cover options, these were not only the most affordable but also happened to feature the perfect color we envisioned. To top it all off, they even offered free shipping, making us incredibly happy with our find. It’s a fantastic deal for $18 and $15 a pop, respectively, for high-quality organic items. Of course, there’s always that nervous moment when you cross your fingers, hoping the color on the computer monitor accurately represents the real-life shade. But as soon as they arrived, we breathed a collective sigh of relief – they were absolutely perfect! Now, with these beautiful additions, we just have to tackle picking up about a million other essential nursery items, including a waterproof mattress cover, changing pad, dresser, side table, lamp, art, cloth diapers, toy baskets, and so much more. Not to worry, we’re confident we’ll get ‘er done and create the perfect haven for our little one.
