Our 10 Favorite Smart Home Upgrades

The concept of the “smart home” has evolved from a futuristic dream into an everyday reality for millions. For years, we observed this technological wave with a mixture of curiosity and skepticism, often asking ourselves: “Smart home technology is undeniably cool, but does it truly offer tangible value?” Our conclusion, after much firsthand experience, is that while smart home devices are certainly not a fundamental necessity – they fall squarely into the ‘want’ category rather than ‘need’ – a select few systems have profoundly enhanced the ease and comfort of our daily lives. Beyond mere convenience, some of these innovations actively contribute to making our home more energy-efficient, translating into genuine savings by optimizing water usage or reducing heating and cooling expenditures.

We openly admit to not being early adopters; as Sherry often quips, we’re “consistently behind the trends.” However, our gradual foray into smart home living saw a notable acceleration last fall with the arrival of an Amazon Echo as a birthday gift. Since then, our collection of smart devices has steadily grown, many of which we’ve enthusiastically discussed on our podcast. Given the frequent inquiries from our audience about our specific setup and how these devices genuinely integrate into our day-to-day routines, we’ve decided to dedicate an entire post to demystifying our smart home. So, prepare to dive in as we explore the practical applications and hidden benefits of our connected abode.

Our Journey into Smart Home Ownership: Devices That Made the Cut

It seems that in today’s market, there’s a “smart” version of almost every household item imaginable – from robotic vacuums and internet-connected refrigerators to app-controlled garage door openers. However, our personal acquisitions have largely gravitated towards devices that enhance lighting control and promote energy efficiency. Below is an initial overview of the smart devices we currently own, with a more detailed explanation of their daily utility following in the subsequent sections.

1. Amazon Echo / 2. Echo Dot / 3. Smart Plug / 4. Mini Smart Plug / 5. Smart Light Switch / 6. Smart Light Bulb / 7. Smart Thermostat / 8. Smart Irrigation Controller

The Foundational Hub: Voice Assistants and Smart Speakers

Every single smart device in our home has been made exponentially more useful and intuitive through the integration with a central voice assistant and smart home hub. In our case, this role is perfectly filled by our Amazon Echo devices, with Alexa always poised to respond to our commands. While the Echo wasn’t our very first smart home purchase, it is undeniably the first step we recommend for anyone embarking on their smart home journey. Starting with a device like an Amazon Echo or a Google Home provides a crucial foundation.

The primary reason for this recommendation is compatibility. A central hub ensures that any subsequent smart technologies you introduce will seamlessly integrate and communicate with your existing ecosystem. While both the Echo and Google Home boast broad compatibility with most smart home devices on the market, it’s not universal, so choosing your hub wisely is paramount. Our decision to go with the Echo was based on brief online research that suggested both platforms were quite comparable in functionality. However, the Echo offered superior sound quality for music playback, which was a higher priority for us compared to Google’s slight edge in general knowledge queries. This led us to acquire an Echo during a Black Friday sale last November, utilizing a birthday gift card.

As the holiday deals continued into December, we further expanded our voice assistant coverage by adding three Echo Dots. These smaller, more affordable versions of the Echo, while offering less robust sound quality, allowed us to invoke Alexa – and thus control our smart devices – from various points across the house. We strategically placed one in our downstairs home office and two on our second floor: one in our master bedroom and another in our bonus room. The main Echo in the kitchen is perfectly positioned to hear us from the living room, eliminating the need for an additional device there. These distributed devices unlock a particularly helpful function called “Drop In,” which many users might not be aware of, greatly enhancing intra-home communication – more on that later!

Smart Plugs & Lights: Versatility in Home Automation

Beyond the voice assistant hubs, the smart plugs and lights constitute another central pillar of our automated home. Specifically, we rely on standard smart plugs and their more discreet mini versions. For lighting, we also incorporated smart light bulbs, starting with a Philips Hue White starter pack that was a Christmas gift. (For those interested in understanding the nuances between various smart bulb options, I’ve detailed them in this comprehensive post.)

Over time, I’ve developed a slight preference for smart plugs over smart bulbs due to their superior versatility. Smart plugs enable control not only over traditional lighting fixtures but also non-lighting devices such as fans or coffee makers. They are also ideal for lamps with multiple or non-standard bulbs, like a Christmas tree, where installing individual smart bulbs would be impractical or cost-prohibitive. In fact, it was the “magic trick” of effortlessly automating our Christmas tree’s lights with a smart plug that truly convinced Sherry of the practical benefits of smart home technology.

Before making any smart home purchases, we strongly recommend asking yourself: “What specific aspects of my home life am I trying to improve?” By identifying genuine pain points related to efficiency, convenience, or comfort, we were able to acquire the right smart devices for our needs, rather than simply collecting an array of cool gadgets that ultimately served no practical purpose for us. To inspire your own smart home integration, here are **10 Ways We Utilize Smart Home Devices to Enhance Our Daily Living.**

10 Ways Smart Home Technology Elevates Our Daily Life

#1: Resolving Annoying Switch Situations

Every home seems to have that one light switch that just doesn’t quite work as intended. In our living room, the main light switch was a constant source of frustration. First, its location by the back door was highly inconvenient, far from where we typically entered the room from the kitchen. Second, and more critically, it controlled nearly all the electrical outlets in the room. This meant that turning off the lights inadvertently cut power to our modem and television. This peculiar setup led to numerous incidents where babysitters and guests accidentally plunged the entire house into internet and TV darkness. Our temporary, albeit unrefined, solution involved a piece of tape with “DO NOT TURN OFF” scrawled in Sharpie directly onto the toggle switch – a testament to our ongoing battle with the switch. Day-to-day, this meant individually turning on and off each of the three lamps in the room at their base, a minor but cumulatively annoying task after a long day. We constantly wondered: why couldn’t our switches just control what we *wanted* them to control, without disrupting our connectivity?

Our smart home solution transformed this daily aggravation. Now, all three lamps in the living room – two couch lamps and one floor lamp – are connected to smart plugs. A simple voice command, “Alexa, turn on the Living Room,” instantly illuminates them all. We retain the flexibility to control them individually with commands like “Alexa, turn on the floor lamp,” but our preferred method involves a pre-configured Group within the Alexa app, allowing us to manage them collectively. Before heading to bed, a quick instruction to Alexa turns them all off, completely eliminating the late-night “living room lap” and the side-eye given to that now-obsolete wall switch. This simple change has made a surprising difference in our evening routine.

#2: Streamlining Bedtime with Personalized Routines

While smart home technology hasn’t yet mastered the art of putting children to bed (we eagerly await that innovation!), it has significantly streamlined our own nightly routines. Beyond setting up Groups of smart devices, one of our most cherished features in the Alexa app is the ability to create “Routines.” These are customizable sequences of actions that Alexa performs upon receiving a single, user-defined command. Routines can involve turning devices on or off, playing music, delivering news or weather updates, or even speaking pre-set phrases. For example, when we say “Alexa, we’re home,” she switches on the living room lights, activates Sherry’s favorite salt lamp, and cheerfully responds, “I’m happy you’re back. The dog is too.” This personalized greeting instantly makes returning home feel more welcoming.

However, my absolute favorite Routine in our house is “Alexa, Good Night.” These three simple words trigger a synchronized series of events: all connected living room lights (and the salt lamp) downstairs automatically turn off, while our bedside lamps upstairs, equipped with smart bulbs, simultaneously switch on. This means that as we ascend to bed, we no longer have to navigate a dark bedroom, stumbling to find the light switch. It might seem like a minor luxury, but it’s a perk we utilize EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT. The consistent convenience and subtle comfort it provides are truly delightful, akin to a mini, light-based version of a hotel’s turndown service, creating a serene transition into the evening.

#3: Effortless Office Lighting with Smart Switches

Our home office presented another lighting inconvenience. The room benefits from excellent natural light, allowing us to work comfortably without artificial illumination for most of the day. Yet, there inevitably comes a point when the sun sets or storm clouds gather, and we wish to activate the overhead light. The challenge? The light switch is located across the room. While this may sound like an “extremely lazy” complaint, when deeply immersed in work, the ability to maintain our focus and avoid interrupting our workflow to cross the room for a simple switch flip is surprisingly valuable.

A home office with natural light

The solution here couldn’t be a smart plug, as the ceiling light is hardwired. Furthermore, with two bulbs in the fixture, buying two smart bulbs felt inefficient since we didn’t require individual control. Our ideal solution came in the form of a smart light switch. Installation is similar to a standard switch, though it’s crucial to ensure your electrical box includes a neutral wire (typically white), as smart switches require it for power. A word of caution: smart switches are often bulkier than conventional ones, so tight or shallow junction boxes might pose a fitting challenge, but ours integrated seamlessly. Now, we can control the office light both by voice (“Alexa, turn on the Office“) and manually, as it functions perfectly as a traditional switch. Its paddle design also blends in naturally with the other switches throughout our house. We’d love to install smart switches in our kitchen too, but the existing 3-way switches there present a unique challenge. While 3-way smart versions exist, one of our kitchen’s 3-way switches has an uncommon size that prevents compatibility.

#4: Taming Items with Inconvenient Controls

Our very first foray into smart plugs was with our Christmas tree last year. I had grown weary of the daily ritual: contorting myself behind the tree, squatting among pine needles, to manually plug it into the wall each morning and then repeating the same awkward dance every night before bed. If this paints a picture of my advanced state of laziness by day’s end, it’s an accurate one. The ability to control the tree with a simple Alexa command was so liberating that we quickly acquired a second smart plug for the smaller tree in our bonus room. This allowed us to effortlessly turn both trees off simultaneously with a single voice prompt, eliminating two separate manual interventions.

With the holiday season concluded, those smart plugs found new purpose. They now control Sherry’s salt lamps, one in the living room and another in the office. These lamps typically operate via a dial switch located halfway down their cords, which meant Sherry frequently had to fish the cord out from behind furniture and meticulously scroll the small wheel to turn them on or off. While not an intensely difficult task, it was inconvenient enough that she found herself using the lamps less frequently than desired. Now, both salt lamps power on and off in conjunction with their respective Living Room and Office lighting groups, and also belong to their own “Salt Lamps” group. This flexibility means we can enjoy their ambient glow and purported mystical benefits even when we don’t need the main room lights on, making a formerly tedious task completely effortless.

#5: Minimizing Yelling with the Easiest Intercom System Ever Installed

It’s somewhat ironic that after laughing at and painstakingly removing the broken, antiquated 1980s intercom system throughout our house (patching up the giant holes they left behind just this year), one of our most frequently used smart home features is the Echo’s modern intercom capability, known as “Drop In.” If you have multiple Echo devices in your home, you can simply say: “Alexa, Drop In On The Bonus Room,” and it establishes a two-way audio connection, allowing you to speak to and hear from that specific room. By strategically placing Echo Dots or Echos in key areas like the kitchen, bonus room, office, and our bedroom, we’ve effectively created a seamless, wireless intercom system – all by simply plugging them in, with no unsightly holes in the walls!

We primarily leverage this feature to call the kids downstairs for dinner, saving us from having to shout across floors, or to discreetly check in on them without bellowing, “EVERYTHING OKAY UP THERE??? I HEARD A LOUD CRASH!!!” The Drop In feature can also extend to friends and family who own an Echo device in their homes, though our sole attempt to connect with my sister in New York City resulted in connection and sound quality akin to a problematic conference call. For now, we’ll stick to traditional phone calls or FaceTime for external communication. However, in the future, this could evolve into an excellent option for free, hands-free phone calls to anyone in your contact list with a compatible smart home hub. And rest assured, your privacy is protected: you must grant permission through the Alexa app for anyone to “Drop In” on your device, and even then, your Echo will prompt you to accept a Drop In request each time it occurs, preventing unauthorized listening.

#6: Cutting Down Our Heating & Cooling Bills with Smart Thermostats

Among the original smart home devices in our arsenal are our Nest Learning Thermostats, which have been efficiently managing our home’s climate for nearly five years. Our positive experience with them was so profound that we subsequently purchased the more affordable, non-learning Nest Thermostat E for our beach house. There are numerous reasons we’ve become such ardent fans: they’re incredibly easy to set up, intuitive and fun to control, and their sleek design is visually appealing. However, perhaps their most valuable feature is the “auto-away” mode. This intelligent function automatically adjusts your system to an energy-saving “away” mode when it detects no motion for a prolonged period, typically by lowering the temperature by 5 degrees in winter or allowing it to rise by 5 degrees in summer. This isn’t just beneficial when we’re on extended vacations or weekend getaways; even during short walks or quick errands, the Nest proactively helps us conserve energy. The peace of mind that comes from having this system operate intelligently in the background, without requiring constant thought or manual adjustment, is truly remarkable.

For those who appreciate concrete data, research indicates that on average, Nest Thermostats save users between 10% and 12% on heating costs and approximately 15% on cooling expenses. Based on typical energy costs, this translates to an average annual saving of between **$131** and **$145**. This means a Nest Thermostat often pays for itself in under two years – a significant return on investment, especially considering ours have performed flawlessly for five years and show no signs of trouble. Furthermore, Nest products are now seamlessly controllable via Alexa, allowing us to frequently issue commands like “Alexa, turn downstairs down 1 degree” or “Alexa, what’s the current temperature upstairs?” This integration has made one of our most beloved smart home devices even more accessible and hands-free, further enhancing its convenience.

#7: Keeping Our Yard Happy & Saving Water with Smart Irrigation

When we embarked on the project of installing our own sprinkler system last year, I made sure to incorporate a smart irrigation controller by Rachio. This device offers substantial advantages over a standard controller, and upgrading an existing system to a smart one is surprisingly straightforward. The entire system is managed via a comprehensive phone app, providing extensive options for programming and scheduling watering cycles. Its compatibility with Alexa allows for voice commands such as “Alexa, tell Rachio to run Zone 1 for 10 minutes” – although, truthfully, I’ve used this specific command only once, as I primarily rely on the pre-scheduled runs.

The true brilliance of the Rachio controller lies in its weather-sensing capabilities. It constantly monitors local weather forecasts, intelligently skipping scheduled waterings when rain (or forecasted rain) is detected. More impressively, it dynamically adjusts watering times and durations throughout the year, adapting to changing conditions like increased dryness or higher temperatures. This proactive approach ensures our yard receives optimal hydration while minimizing water waste, making us particularly happy that we’re no longer the ones with sprinklers running unnecessarily during a downpour. It’s an incredibly efficient and eco-conscious solution for maintaining a healthy landscape.

#8: Creating the Illusion of Presence for Enhanced Security

While our current (and quite complex) traditional alarm system doesn’t directly integrate with Alexa, we’ve successfully leveraged several of our smart devices to bolster home security and create the illusion of occupancy when we’re away. Though I won’t divulge all our secrets here (for obvious security reasons!), one ingenious method we employ is through the KASA app, which controls all our smart plugs and switches. The KASA app features an invaluable “Away” function that allows you to schedule your connected devices to turn on and off **randomly** during specific timeframes. This is a significant upgrade from outdated timer switches that activate lights at the exact same times each day, a predictability that often signals an empty home (and famously foiled the Wet Bandits in *Home Alone*). The randomized patterns make it far more convincing that someone is genuinely moving about the house. My only minor complaint is the current lack of direct Alexa integration for this feature. I would love to be able to simply say “Alexa, go into Away mode” to activate all these randomized light patterns, but for now, I manage it manually within the KASA app.

#9: Everyday Productivity: Setting Timers & Getting Instant Answers

While our experience with Alexa retrieving highly complex information isn’t always flawless (she sometimes lacks thoroughness compared to, say, Google Home, which tends to excel in detailed answers), we still find her significantly more helpful than Siri (who often responds with “Wait, I’m looking that up for you” only to provide a list of links I could have just Googled myself – hardly an answer, Siri!). We consistently rely on Alexa for more basic, yet incredibly useful, functions like setting timers and alarms. I frequently use the kitchen Echo as an extra cooking timer when our stove’s timer is occupied, and our daughter often uses it for tasks such as timing her 20-minute reading sessions after school. It’s quite endearing to hear her say, “Alexa, please set a timer for 20 minutes. Thank you so much, Alexa, we love you – wait, Alexa, now tell me a joke please.

Alexa also shines when it comes to quick, simple information retrieval. Questions like “What day is Father’s Day this year?,” “How late is Belle Greek Restaurant open?,” “How much is 8 times 12?,” or “How do you spell prosciutto?” (I actually just used Alexa to double-check that spelling for this very sentence!) are answered instantly and accurately. We’re confident we haven’t even uncovered all the ways she can assist us, but we’ve found these everyday productivity functions far more helpful than we initially anticipated, integrating seamlessly into our daily routines.

#10: Simply More Fun: Entertainment and Playfulness

Truth be told, a significant portion of our interaction with Alexa simply boils down to pure enjoyment. These uses aren’t necessarily essential or productivity-driven; rather, they’re just plain cool and undeniably make life at home more pleasurable. Primarily, I’m referring to music. We stream music through our Echos daily, even the smaller Dots, thanks to its seamless connection with our Spotify account. This allows us to request specific songs, playlists, or artists with a simple voice command – I’m doing it right now in the office as I type this article. Beyond music, there are countless other “skills” and playful gimmicks that both we and the kids enjoy immensely. Our children particularly love asking Alexa to tell jokes or to “open the magic door” or “open a box of kittens” (I highly recommend trying these; I won’t spoil the surprise for you!). And personally, I conclude almost every evening with “Alexa, play Jeopardy,” which provides me with six daily questions and then informs me what percentage of other players answered as many correctly as I did. Why? Because I’m a self-proclaimed nerd, right up until the final minutes of the day.

Making the Smart Home Decision: Is It Right For You?

We began this article by posing the question: “Is smart home technology truly worth the investment?” Ultimately, the answer will depend entirely on your individual circumstances, the unique characteristics of your home, and the specific problems you are seeking to solve. Our experience has shown that by focusing on tangible improvements to convenience, efficiency, and comfort, rather than simply accumulating gadgets, smart home technology can indeed be incredibly rewarding. We’ve been exceedingly happy with the modest integration of smart home devices we’ve introduced so far. While we continue to observe other emerging technologies with keen interest, they haven’t quite yet reached the threshold of “worth it” for us. The emphasis here is definitely on the word *yet*, as the smart home landscape is constantly evolving.

Our Evolving Smart Home: Updates & Future Considerations

Since our initial smart home setup, life has continued to evolve. After a recent move, we shared an updated perspective on which smart home devices proved indispensable and which ones we decided to leave behind. Even more recently, we added a wireless video doorbell, an incredibly easy installation that further enhanced our home security and convenience. The world of smart home technology is dynamic and ever-expanding, and we look forward to exploring future innovations that continue to simplify and enrich our daily lives.
