Joyful Simplicity: Our Holiday Edit

Welcome to our annual holiday home tour! It’s truly remarkable to think that this marks our second year of decking the halls in this house – where does the time go? While you might have caught a glimpse of our festive touches in our recent kitchen door post, today we’re thrilled to unveil our complete holiday transformation. For Year Two, we’ve embraced a ‘minimalist Christmas’ aesthetic, proving that less can indeed be more when it comes to creating a cozy and festive atmosphere. Our aim was to achieve a holiday look that feels both serene and celebratory, focusing on thoughtful placements and cherished decor pieces that truly resonate with our family’s evolving style and traditions.

A Centralized Celebration: Our Kitchen Christmas Tree

Last year, our holiday decorating approach included a charming mini real tree upstairs in the family room, alongside our beloved “skinny faker” artificial tree (you can find this exact tree here) in the bedroom. However, this year brought an exciting change: a new, highly visible central spot for our main Christmas tree. We discovered the perfect corner nook created by our recently added kitchen pantry. This prime location means our tree can be enjoyed for a significant portion of the day, making it a constant source of joy and holiday spirit. This thoughtful placement ultimately eliminated our desire for a secondary little tree upstairs, streamlining our decor efforts while maximizing impact. For a trip down memory lane, you can explore all the photos of how we decorated the house last year in this dedicated post.

The Perfect Nook: A Serendipitous Placement

One of the most delightful aspects of our tree’s new home is the incredible “bang for the buck” it offers from the outside. The way its glowing lights shine through the window creates an enchanting display that greets anyone approaching our home. This couldn’t have been planned better, and frankly, it wasn’t! The idea sparked on a whim; we simply pushed the tree into the pantry corner nook, curious if it would look awkward or charming. The unanimous verdict? “UM, IT IS GREAT!” It was one of those serendipitous moments that define truly personal home styling. The unexpected joy of seeing our festive tree peeking out, especially with the comical contrast of a pile of flip-flops and a lemon tree just outside, always brings a smile to our faces. It’s a vivid reminder of living in Florida during the holidays!

Functionality Meets Festive Flair

You might be wondering about the practicality of a tree in this kitchen nook. While I haven’t explicitly shown the other side, rest assured, it integrates seamlessly into our daily life. This corner typically houses a large potted plant throughout the year, so the main difference is simply the tree’s added height. No one was walking into this specific corner previously, so its placement maintains excellent flow and functionality within the kitchen. The children absolutely love participating in the decorating process, as captured in this photo, where they’re eagerly selecting ornaments. It’s a space that invites participation and holiday cheer without impeding movement. For those who appreciate a full spatial understanding, this video provides a comprehensive walk-through of our updated kitchen, offering a fantastic sense of the entire space and how our holiday decor fits in. The glimpse of the kitchen porch and the wonderfully “Florida” ending are sure to bring a chuckle!

Embracing Sentimental Sparkle: Our Collected Ornaments

Returning to our beloved Christmas tree, we are staunch advocates for the beauty of a “collected-over-time” display. This means a delightful mishmash of sentimental treasures, meaningful mementos, and heartwarming handmade creations from our children. We’ve long moved past the era of meticulously “themed trees” or anything overly coordinated and matching. Instead, we revel in the joyful chaos of jamming ornaments onto virtually every branch, admiring the unique and personal outcome each time. We understand this approach isn’t for everyone, but for us, it’s a profound source of happiness and a reflection of our family’s journey. Each ornament tells a story, making our tree a vibrant tapestry of memories that truly brightens our holiday season.

A Tribute to Beloved Memories

The first night we put up the tree, our children placed their cherished stuffed animal, “Burger,” right here, and I confess, it brought real tears to my eyes. We’d give anything to have him back with us. Experiencing Christmas without him feels profoundly sad, yet his spirit lives on through the numerous Burger ornaments adorning our tree. He is, without a doubt, forever in our hearts, making our tree not just a symbol of the holidays, but a beautiful memorial of a beloved family member. This tradition of honoring our memories through ornaments makes the holiday season even more meaningful and provides comfort during times of reflection.

Playful Antics with Raychard

And then there’s Raychard. Yes, his name is indeed Raychard, not Richard – a delightful twist bestowed upon him by our daughter when she was just two or three years old. Now 11, she ensures Raychard, our resident Elf on the Shelf, continues his long-standing tradition of mischief. He’s always finding himself in comical predicaments, adding an extra layer of playful fun and anticipation to our holiday mornings. His antics are a cherished part of our family’s festive routine, creating endless smiles and laughter as we discover his latest adventure each day. This year, he’s already managed to swing from a pendant light, proving that even with a minimalist approach, there’s always room for a little bit of holiday chaos and childlike wonder!

Upstairs: Thoughtful Touches of Minimalist Cheer

Moving upstairs, the operative word for our holiday decor this year is unequivocally “minimal.” Ha! My approach was wonderfully straightforward: I simply arranged a tray of charming ornaments alongside a few small bottle brush trees, and that was it. Some of these trees are classic bottle brush, others are crafted from wood, ceramic, or possess the elegant sheen of mercury glass. These treasures are deeply special to me; I distinctly remember packing them with extreme care when we moved, determined that nothing should ever happen to them. Their delicate beauty and varied textures bring a quiet sophistication to the space, perfectly embodying our minimalist yet festive theme.

Elegant Simplicity in the Living Area

Adjacent to the TV, a small dough bowl holds an array of shiny pink and silver ornaments, providing a touch of subtle sparkle that catches the eye without overwhelming the space. This is a wonderfully simple yet effective way to introduce holiday glamor. (You can find a similar whitewashed dough bowl here if you’re inspired!) Overall, the effect throughout this area is one of understated elegance—a subtle holiday presence rather than an over-the-top display. It truly reflects a deliberate choice to go the opposite direction of maximalist decor this year, favoring a serene and refined holiday aesthetic that still feels warm and inviting. The beauty lies in the details and the peaceful ambiance created by these carefully chosen pieces.

Fun fact: I store this dough bowl with these ornaments nestled inside, exactly as they are displayed! It neatly tucks away into the last wardrobe cabinet in our bedroom, alongside all our other holiday decor (you can read more about our storage solutions here). This ingenious method means it’s ready to be set out year after year with zero fuss. It’s incredibly easy, and being stored in a closed cabinet, it miraculously remains dust-free. I recall in our old Richmond home, I used to meticulously bag up ornaments in labeled plastic bags, but sometimes, less really is more. This simple, elegant solution works perfectly.

I absolutely adore this particular angle, where the vibrant pink painting, the elegant brass sconce, and Teil’s captivating book blend harmoniously with these charming decorative trees. While they may be small, these little trees bring me immense happiness. I might even admit to acquiring three new ones for a mere $3 each from Target! Their “Dollar Spot” (which, let’s be honest, should really be renamed the “$3 or $5 Spot” these days) offered adorable pink glass and mercury glass options that were simply irresistible. They add a whimsical yet sophisticated touch that perfectly complements our minimalist aesthetic.

Desk Decor & Year-Round Merriment

Our minimalist tree collection found another home on our desk, adding a touch of festive cheer to our workspace. And yes, the Legos scattered on the floor? That’s real life, folks, and a scene we wholeheartedly embrace! The majority of these colorful bricks are a treasured heirloom from John’s childhood; his mom carefully saved them for all these years, and now our children joyfully play with them, creating new memories with old toys. It’s a wonderful connection across generations that we absolutely adore. Beyond the holiday specific decor, I wholeheartedly recommend incorporating a disco ball for year-round festivity. The dazzling reflections it casts when the sun hits just right are pure magic, instantly elevating the mood and bringing a playful sparkle to any room, any day of the year.

New Traditions and Outdoor Radiance

Lighting Up New Family Memories

This year marked a special milestone as we finally introduced this beautiful menorah into our household holiday traditions. Growing up, our home always celebrated with both a Christmas tree and a menorah, reflecting my mom’s Catholic background and my dad’s Jewish heritage. It was a beautiful blend of traditions, and I knew our kids would cherish growing up with a similar experience. We all thoroughly enjoyed the ritual of lighting the candles, and it provided a wonderful opportunity for me to share cherished childhood memories of my grandma and grandpa’s Hanukkah celebrations. It’s moments like these that truly enrich the holiday season, weaving new memories with threads of the past. And, for a dose of “real life,” please appreciate the smeared handprints on the dishwasher – proof that a bustling home is a happy home! P.S. Doesn’t that banana stem emerging from the fruit bowl look like a clenched fist, as if the apple below is defiantly declaring, “I’ll never give up!”

Outdoor Glow and Neighborhood Joy

Outdoors, John embarked on a festive project, meticulously wrapping one of our trees with lights (these are similar warm white exterior lights). I absolutely adore the result and am actively advocating for us to leave them up year-round! The tree casts such a beautiful, warm glow at night, providing a magical ambiance that we get to enjoy from our front door, through our windows during dinner, or while relaxing in the sitting room in the evenings. It truly transforms the outdoor space into something enchanting. Beyond our own yard, we have the pleasure of enjoying our neighbors’ festive spirit. Please take a moment to appreciate the inflatable wiener dogs that cheerfully reside across the street! We are incredibly fortunate to have the very best neighbors whose love for dachshunds knows no bounds (they even boast a “Happy Halloweiner” inflatable every October, which is a joy). With other wonderfully festive houses nearby, our street truly embodies the spirit of Christmas – even when it’s a balmy 75 degrees at the beach.

Crafting Your Own Harmonious Holiday Decor

As you plan your own holiday decorating, remember that your home’s festive spirit should reflect your unique personality and family traditions. Whether you gravitate towards a grand, elaborate display or, like us this year, prefer a more minimalist and intentional approach, the key is to create spaces that bring you joy. Consider how your decor interacts with your daily life, how it looks from both inside and out, and most importantly, the memories it helps you create. Don’t be afraid to experiment with placement, embrace sentimental items, and perhaps even start a new tradition or two. The most beautiful holiday homes are those filled with love, laughter, and personal touches that tell a story.

Happy Holidays!

We hope this tour of our minimalist yet merry holiday home has offered you some inspiration and brought a little extra joy to your day. From our centrally located kitchen tree to the thoughtful touches upstairs and the radiant outdoor lights, every element has been chosen to foster a sense of peace and celebration. Wishing you and yours a wonderfully happy and healthy holiday season, filled with warmth, love, and plenty of festive cheer!
