Gray Horse by Benjamin Moore: Our Chair Rail Update

Transforming a dedicated workspace into a haven of productivity and comfort is a journey, not a destination. Our office makeover has been a labor of love, and the latest enhancement has truly redefined its character. We recently completed a subtle yet impactful change: painting the area beneath the chair rail a shade darker than the beautifully stenciled wall above it. This adjustment, as we’ve alluded to previously, was crucial for achieving a more balanced and grounded aesthetic.

Before this update, the room felt a little “top-heavy.” The intricate stencil pattern on the upper wall, combined with the crisp white chair rail, created a distinct visual division. Below this line, the wall remained the original, lighter gray, leaving the lower half feeling somewhat unfinished and visually sparse. To rectify this, we consulted our trusty Benjamin Moore paint swatch, which features our main wall color, Moonshine. By simply sliding one square down from Moonshine, we discovered Gray Horse—a sophisticated, deeper gray that perfectly complemented its lighter counterpart. We then had this color custom-matched to an Olympic No-VOC paint in a satin finish, ensuring a durable and environmentally friendly solution. The cost? A remarkably affordable $10 for the quart of paint. Sometimes, the most significant improvements come with the smallest price tag.

The difference is truly remarkable. Doesn’t the room feel significantly more grounded now? The darker shade anchors the lower portion of the walls, providing a sense of stability and depth that was previously lacking. This simple paint job has transformed the entire atmosphere of the office, making it feel more intentional and cohesive. It’s a testament to how thoughtful color choices can dramatically impact the perception of a space, turning an otherwise airy room into one that feels comfortably embraced.

Beyond the walls, you might also notice another significant change: we’ve retired the matching metallic-gold gourd lamps that once graced our desk. In their place, we’ve introduced two distinct lamps, both discovered during a treasure hunt at HomeGoods. One is an elegant tripod desk lamp, featuring an Oil-Rubbed Bronze (ORB) finish and a clean white shade. The other is a classic glass-based lamp, also with an ORB base and a crisp white shade. While they don’t explicitly match, they possess a delightful synergy that enhances the room’s character. This deliberate move away from perfect symmetry—a mirror-image desk, a centered window, and two formerly matching chairs—was an intentional choice. We believed the room, with its uber-balanced core, could benefit from a touch of imperfection, adding visual interest and a more lived-in feel.

We understand that these non-matching lamps might initially raise an eyebrow, especially without any art adorning the walls yet (yes, Mom, I’m looking at you!). However, we promise that once our carefully curated artwork is hung, the focus will naturally shift away from the lamps. They will seamlessly integrate into the broader design, becoming just another layered element that contributes to the room’s overall narrative. Or, you might still dislike them, but hopefully, you’ll continue to love me as a daughter!

Another strategic addition to our evolving office is the dark leather chair, previously residing in the bedroom. Its rich, dark tones beautifully complement the dark wood top of the desk, creating a cohesive and sophisticated corner. What was once a humble clothes-holder in the bedroom has found its true purpose here, offering a comfortable spot for reading or contemplation. To inject a vibrant burst of color and comfort, we added a bright green lumbar pillow, a nomadic accessory that has journeyed through various rooms in our home. This pillow brilliantly ties into the new green desk chairs that we meticulously painted just a few weeks prior, creating a delightful color echo across the room.

For some inexplicable reason, I find myself particularly enamored with the file cabinet, largely thanks to the colorful accessories it now hosts. The foundational palette of the room—gray walls, white desk and cabinet, and a brown chair and desktop—naturally created a craving for color. This is precisely why we introduced the vibrant green desk chairs and a few other punchy accents throughout the space. These carefully chosen pops of color breathe life into the room, preventing it from feeling sterile or overly monochromatic.

One afternoon, as I arranged a stack of books, some stacked bowls, and a ceramic pear on the desk, I found myself exclaiming aloud (yes, I often talk to myself throughout the day), “Oh man, someone should design a whole room based on these colors!” It was a moment of spontaneous inspiration, recognizing the inherent beauty in the accidental arrangement of everyday objects.

Stacked books and decorative objects

Then, it dawned on me:

  • The subtle yellow tones present in the bowl and the bottom book are mirrored in the upholstery of our desk chairs and the intricate wall stencil above the chair rail, creating a gentle, recurring warmth.
  • The verdant green bowl beautifully mimics the lively hue of our newly painted desk chairs, establishing a vibrant connection across the room.
  • The sophisticated dark gray book perched on top is just a shade or two deeper than the Gray Horse we recently applied under the chair rail, reinforcing the foundational color scheme with subtle variation.
  • The captivating turquoise found in the miniature globe and the middle book also makes an appearance in the upholstery fabric of our desk chairs, adding an unexpected but harmonious splash of cool color.
  • The glossy, pristine white of the ceramic pear perfectly relates to the existing white trim, the expansive desk surface, and the functional file cabinet, ensuring a consistent and clean backdrop.

Duh! We had, in fact, subconsciously based the entire room’s design around these very colors, purely by accident. It’s moments like these—when unexpected synergy emerges from trial and error—that make the design process so incredibly rewarding. It underscores the beauty of an organic approach, where elements fall into place naturally. So, from our experience, we highly recommend a dynamic and inviting palette of white, green, yellow, gray, and turquoise. Oh, and let’s not forget a touch of rich chocolate brown! Perhaps someday, when I find myself with an abundance of free time, I’ll take on the project of giving the globe base an Oil-Rubbed Bronze finish to truly represent that earthy tone.

Much like every other room in our home, the office is nowhere near what one might call “done.” We fully expect it will undergo several more years of tweaking and refining, much like our first home. The beauty of interior design is in its evolution, adapting to our needs and tastes over time.

Office after latest updates

However, it’s undeniably feeling far more finished and cohesive than it did just a few months back when it presented a much starker, less inviting appearance:

Our journey to this point has involved several key transformations:

  • We meticulously constructed the wall-to-wall desk, a custom solution that maximizes space and functionality, transforming the room’s utility. (You can delve deeper into this extensive project here, here, here, here, here, and here.)
  • An IKEA file cabinet was integrated into the design, providing essential storage without sacrificing style. (More on its clever integration here and here.)
  • A cheerful toy basket for Clara was introduced, proving that even in an office, function and family needs are paramount.
  • The walls were painted a serene soft gray, Benjamin Moore’s Moonshine, creating a calming and versatile backdrop. (Discover more about this paint choice here.)
  • The existing chandelier received a dramatic makeover, painted indigo and crowned with a substantial drum shade, elevating its presence. (Details on this lighting transformation can be found here.)
  • We embarked on the challenging yet rewarding task of stenciling the walls, adding a layer of intricate pattern and texture. (Explore the stenciling adventure here and here.)
  • The desk chairs underwent a full restoration, painted and reupholstered to perfectly match our evolving color scheme. (Follow their makeover journey here and here.)
  • Most recently, the bottom half of the room was painted a darker gray, Benjamin Moore’s Gray Horse, adding that much-needed sense of grounding and sophistication.
  • A comfortable chair was strategically placed in the corner, anticipating countless storytime sessions with Clara, as she demands narratives in almost every room of the house!

Yet, the creative process continues. Our “still gotta” list ensures that this office will remain a dynamic space:

  • The bare walls are eagerly awaiting the addition of carefully selected art, which will infuse personality and complete the room’s visual narrative.
  • Window treatments are a must to add softness, privacy, and control over natural light, enhancing both comfort and aesthetics.
  • Finding the perfect rug remains a priority; the existing one is too wide and not quite long enough to properly define the space and add warmth.
  • A floor lamp is planned for the chair corner, providing essential task lighting and adding vertical height to the composition, complemented by a proper side table for convenience.
  • And, of course, we anticipate a ton of ongoing tweaking and refining. We’ve learned that this is simply “par for the course” for us; our spaces evolve organically as we live in them and discover new needs and inspirations!

What creative projects have you been tackling lately? Are there any other fellow “WP’s” (weekend painters) out there who understand the joy and satisfaction of a DIY transformation? It was also a beautiful weekend for outdoor endeavors. Has anyone been seeding, weeding, or transplanting in their gardens? We’re definitely feeling the outside itch to tackle some of those tasks before the weather turns too cold for comfort…
