Our Pinterest Challenge: Adding Charming Window Boxes
For this season’s challenge, our mission was clear: window boxes! This project had been on our home improvement wish list for quite some time, promising to add much-needed dimension and a touch of soft greenery to our somewhat long and boxy ranch-style house. We had pinned a couple of window box related images, including this picture purely for its aesthetic inspiration (those $90+ boxes were definitely out of our budget, but provided excellent visual goals). We also saved this detailed tutorial for making them from scratch, which was our backup plan if we couldn’t find ready-made options within our price range. We weren’t looking for a major renovation or a boost in resale value; rather, it was a personal desire to see just how cute our home could look with these charming additions. There’s a unique joy in customizing your living space, even if it’s just for your own weird satisfaction!
Window boxes are renowned for their ability to instantly enhance curb appeal, adding character and a welcoming touch to any home. For a ranch home, which can sometimes appear monolithic, they offer an excellent way to break up horizontal lines and introduce a vertical element of natural beauty. They provide an opportunity to incorporate color and texture that complements the house’s existing exterior, creating a more layered and inviting facade. After much deliberation and visual planning, we identified three specific windows that we felt would benefit most from this quaint greenery, promising to soften the architectural lines and infuse our home with vibrant life.

Gathering Your Window Box Materials
Our journey began with a trip to Home Depot to source the necessary materials. We meticulously priced out the option of building our own window boxes versus purchasing ready-made ones, and to our pleasant surprise, the costs were quite comparable. This made the decision to buy pre-fabricated boxes an easy one, saving us valuable time and effort on construction. We acquired three matching window boxes, along with their corresponding liners and sturdy brackets. When selecting window boxes, it’s important to consider material (wood, composite, plastic, metal), durability, and how well they complement your home’s aesthetic. We were particularly drawn to the clean-lined, mid-century-inspired design of the planters we found, feeling as though they were perfectly crafted for the architectural style of our ranch house.
The choice of brackets is equally critical, as they must be strong enough to support the weight of the box, soil, and plants, especially after watering. For a brick facade like ours, specialized masonry mounting hardware is essential to ensure a secure and lasting installation. The liners are also a crucial component, providing an additional layer of protection for the main box and often featuring integrated drainage solutions. Thoughtful selection of these core components sets the stage for a successful and long-lasting window box display.

Step-by-Step Window Box Installation on Brick
Installing window boxes on a brick facade requires a specific approach to ensure stability and durability. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the steps we followed, along with invaluable lessons learned:
Step 1: Precision Pilot Holes
The first crucial step involves accurately marking and drilling pilot holes for your mounting brackets. Begin by carefully holding up each window box against the wall to determine its ideal centered position beneath the window. Use a pencil or marker to indicate precisely where each bracket will be mounted. Accuracy here is key for a visually appealing and balanced installation. Once marked, you’ll need a hammer drill and a masonry drill bit appropriate for the size of your screws. A hammer drill is indispensable for drilling into brick and mortar, as it combines rotational motion with a rapid hammering action, making the process efficient and preventing damage to your drill or the facade. Drill pilot holes for each screw, ensuring they are deep enough to accommodate the masonry anchors or screws you’ll be using. This preparation is foundational for a secure attachment.

Step 2: Mounting the Brackets & Learning from Our Mistakes
With the pilot holes drilled, it’s time to secure the brackets. Follow the package instructions for your specific brackets, which typically involves aligning them with the pilot holes and driving in the screws. However, we encountered a couple of common pitfalls that we want to help you avoid:
- Use Proper Masonry Screws: The standard screws that come with many window box kits are often designed for wood or general-purpose use. When working with brick or concrete, these will not suffice. We initially made this mistake and quickly realized they wouldn’t hold. Instead, we highly recommend using 2-inch masonry Tapcon screws. These specialized screws are self-tapping and designed to create their own threads in masonry, providing a much stronger and more reliable hold. We had some leftover from our fireplace project, and they worked perfectly.
- Always Use a Hammer Drill: While a regular drill might seem capable, it pales in comparison to a hammer drill for masonry applications. Trying to drive masonry screws with a standard drill will not achieve the necessary tightness, leading to loose brackets and a less secure installation. We found this out the hard way, having to redo several brackets. A hammer drill, with its powerful impact, ensures the screws are driven in tightly and securely, creating a rock-solid anchor point for your window boxes.
Ensure that as you’re mounting the brackets, you’re also aware of any unique features, such as the bendable metal tab often found at the top, which plays a critical role in securing the window box itself.

Step 3: Securing the Window Box
Once the brackets were firmly in place, the next step was to position the window boxes. Slide the planter onto the mounted brackets. Many window box bracket designs include a special feature, often a soft, pliable metal tab or arm extending upwards from the bracket. This “weird metal thing,” as we affectionately called it, is designed to be bent over the edge of the window box once it’s in place, effectively locking it down. This simple mechanism prevents the box from being accidentally dislodged by wind or curious hands. We discovered how surprisingly soft this metal was – you could easily bend it into place with just your hand, no special tools required. (Though, for dramatic effect, I might pretend it took the strength of The Hulk, my alleged second cousin, to bend it!)

Step 4: Preparing the Liner for Planting
With the window box securely mounted, the final step before planting is to prepare the plastic liner. Carefully drop the liner into the planter box. Before adding any soil or plants, ensure that the drainage holes in the plastic liner are open. Many liners come with pre-perforated holes that need to be popped out. I found that a house key was perfect for smashing them out, as my fingers weren’t quite up to the task. Proper drainage is absolutely critical for the health of your plants, preventing waterlogging and root rot. A thoughtful design feature of our chosen window boxes was that the drainage holes in the plastic liner perfectly aligned with the pre-drilled drainage holes in the outer planter box, a small but significant detail that speaks to good planning on Home Depot’s part.

A Family Affair: Mulching Fun
While I was diligently working on the window boxes, the rest of the family wasn’t idle! John and Clara were on mulching duty, spreading fresh mulch around the garden beds. It was absolutely adorable to watch them contribute to our outdoor refresh project. Of course, by the time we were done for the day, we all had about a hundred inchworms crawling on us – a small price to pay for a beautiful garden and cherished family memories!

The Secret to Instant Window Box Beauty: Pre-Grown Hanging Baskets
Now, back to the window boxes and my favorite “cheater” trick for achieving instant, lush results. Instead of buying small plants or flats and waiting for them to grow and spill over the edges, I opted for an old trick: purchasing two already-grown hanging baskets from a local nursery. In our case, the Great Big Greenhouse here in Richmond was perfect, and even better, I had a store credit, so they didn’t cost a thing! The brilliance of using hanging baskets for window boxes lies in their growth habit. Hanging basket plants are cultivated to spill downwards, creating that coveted “dripping” effect right from day one. This gives you immediate gratification and a much fuller look compared to typical garden pots or flats, which often require weeks or even months to achieve a similar cascading appearance.

Once you have your hanging baskets, the process is simple: carefully dump out the contents and gently divide the plants. Most hanging baskets contain multiple plant varieties or several individual plants grouped together for a fuller look. Take your time separating them, being as gentle as possible with the root systems to minimize shock. This step ensures you have enough individual plant groupings to fill your window box effectively, creating a harmonious and abundant display. We used a general-purpose potting mix with good drainage to fill our liners before carefully placing the divided plants.

And just like that, with a little strategic dividing, we had a beautiful assortment of spilling-over flowers and foliage ready for each window box. This method completely bypasses the waiting game, allowing you to enjoy a vibrant, mature look immediately. When selecting plants, consider varieties that thrive in your local climate and sunlight conditions. For a cascading effect, popular choices include petunias, calibrachoa (million bells), lobelia, ivy, and sweet potato vine. For a touch of height and “thriller” elements, consider small ornamental grasses or upright annuals. “Filler” plants like impatiens or bacopa can fill out the middle ground. Combining these elements creates a dynamic and visually interesting display that will only grow more beautiful over time.

The Beautiful Result: Charming and Casual Window Boxes
Aren’t they absolutely charming? We couldn’t be happier with how our window boxes turned out. While I’m no botanist, I believe the white and pink flowers are petunias, known for their abundant blooms and lovely trailing habit. The purple ones might be another delightful blend of mini petunias or perhaps calibrachoa. The overall effect is precisely what we hoped for: sweet, subtle additions that enhance the house without overpowering it. They are not giant and commanding, but rather casual and simple, perfectly complementing the ranch’s unassuming style.
One aspect we particularly love is that the window boxes themselves are a similar color to our brick facade. This clever choice allows the vibrant flowers to truly be the stars of the show, preventing the overall look from becoming too busy or distracting. As the days pass, these plants will continue to fill in and spill out even more, creating an even lusher and more captivating display. Window boxes require consistent watering, especially in warmer months, and occasional fertilizing to keep the blooms coming. With proper care, they will provide continuous beauty throughout the season, transforming a simple window into a focal point of living art.
