Step 2: Mounting the Brackets & Learning from Our Mistakes

- Use Proper Masonry Screws: The standard screws that come with many window box kits are often designed for wood or general-purpose use. When working with brick or concrete, these will not suffice. We initially made this mistake and quickly realized they wouldn’t hold. Instead, we highly recommend using 2-inch masonry Tapcon screws. These specialized screws are self-tapping and designed to create their own threads in masonry, providing a much stronger and more reliable hold. We had some leftover from our fireplace project, and they worked perfectly.

We used a general-purpose potting mix with good drainage to fill our liners before carefully placing the divided plants.
And just like that, with a little strategic dividing, we had a beautiful assortment of spilling-over flowers and foliage ready for each window box. This method completely bypasses the waiting game, allowing you to enjoy a vibrant, mature look immediately. When selecting plants, consider varieties that thrive in your local climate and sunlight conditions. For a cascading effect, popular choices include petunias, calibrachoa (million bells), lobelia, ivy, and sweet potato vine. For a touch of height and “thriller” elements, consider small ornamental grasses or upright annuals. “Filler” plants like impatiens or bacopa can fill out the middle ground. Combining these elements creates a dynamic and visually interesting display that will only grow more beautiful over time.

Aren’t they absolutely charming? We couldn’t be happier with how our window boxes turned out.
