What’s Trending in Home Design: Kitchen Islands & Backsplash Beauty
Kitchen islands have long been hailed as the heart of the modern kitchen, a multi-functional hub for cooking, dining, and socializing. They promise abundant counter space, additional storage, and often serve as a visual anchor in an open-concept layout. However, as with any popular design trend, the kitchen island isn’t without its detractors. This week, we’re delving into the less-talked-about aspects of kitchen islands, including some surprising negatives we’ve encountered in our own home.

Our recent beach house kitchen renovation brought us face-to-face with the rewarding, yet challenging, world of DIY backsplash tiling. You’re looking at photos of our beach house kitchen backsplash exactly as it was when we recorded this episode. If you’ve been following our journey on Instagram Stories, you’ll know that the grouting phase was completed last week, and we’re excited to share those finished pictures very soon!
This project taught us invaluable lessons about preparation, the virtue of patience, and the beauty in imperfection. We opted for an incredibly budget-friendly approach, utilizing a fantastic 15-cent subway tile from Floor & Decor. To adhere these tiles directly to the drywall, we used a reliable mastic, first ensuring proper adhesion by roughing up the surface with sandpaper. This simple, yet effective, method kept the costs surprisingly low. Including essential supplies like grout and a new trowel, the entire backsplash project came in at an astonishingly affordable price point of around $200! This demonstrates that a stunning kitchen upgrade doesn’t always require a hefty investment.

If you don’t happen to have a Floor & Decor in your vicinity, don’t fret! You can often find nearly identical and similarly priced white subway tiles at Home Depot. In our case, our local Home Depot simply didn’t have the quantity we needed in stock, which led us to Floor & Decor. Before embarking on your own tiling adventure, we highly recommend consulting our comprehensive step-by-step backsplash installation guide. It meticulously details the exact steps we followed for this very project, offering a clear roadmap for success.
One of the most crucial stages in our decision-making process for this backsplash involved extensive visual planning. We created tons of Photoshop mock-ups, which proved invaluable in helping us visualize different tile patterns, colors, and layouts before committing to a single design. This iterative approach, as illustrated in the GIF below, truly helps solidify your design choices and avoids costly mistakes. Taking the time to plan thoroughly, whether through mock-ups or physical samples, is a step you won’t regret.

Now, let’s pivot back to the kitchen island debate. The Wall Street Journal recently published an intriguing article titled “Why Kitchen Islands Are Ruining America’s Kitchens,” which really resonated with some of our own observations. While islands offer undeniable benefits, they can also become a magnet for clutter, disrupt natural kitchen workflows, and even impede traffic flow in smaller spaces. Our beach house kitchen, with its island incorporating a sink (seen above), and our main home’s island (pictured below), both highlight the various ways islands can integrate into a space, for better or worse. It’s about finding the right balance between form and function for your specific needs and layout, considering both the aesthetic appeal and the practical implications.

Introducing Chad Rohde: John’s Unexpected Doppelganger and Beyond
Beyond the practicalities of home renovation, sometimes the internet delivers unexpected delights. This episode featured a particularly humorous segment dedicated to Chad Rohde, famously known as “John’s Doppelganger.” This fascinating individual, pictured above with Travis, is part of Rohde Construction in Dallas, Texas. Their company is renowned for legitimate and high-quality construction work, as you can see from various projects they’ve undertaken. You can also follow Chad on Instagram to keep up with his projects and, perhaps, more doppelganger moments.
For those interested in their professional background, you can delve deeper into Travis and Chad’s collaborative work through this D Magazine profile, which highlights their reputable contributions to the Dallas home building scene. The image below provides a glimpse into the caliber of their projects, assuring you that they are indeed legitimate and highly skilled contractors.
However, to truly grasp the hilarious circumstances that led to Chad’s appearance on our podcast, you absolutely must watch our dedicated “John/Chad” highlight on Instagram. It’s a riot! The moment Chad playfully trolled us by posing in an eerily similar outfit and stance to John had us both in stitches, illustrating the uncanny resemblance that sparked this viral sensation. The most memorable aspect of this whole saga, beyond the endless stream of hysterical direct messages we received from our listeners, was the collection of side-by-side comparison photos Sherry meticulously created. She painstakingly cobbled together images of John and Chad in strikingly similar poses, resulting in a series of comedic masterpieces. John fondly refers to the top-left split screen of one such comparison as “Chihuahua Versus Pecs,” perfectly encapsulating the lighthearted and utterly amusing nature of this unexpected online discovery.

What We’re Loving: Smart Paint Picks & Essential Beach Gear
In our ongoing quest for smarter, more efficient home improvement, we’ve stumbled upon some true gems. One of John’s latest discoveries is a brilliant new technique for selecting paint colors that promises to revolutionize your decision-making process. Gone are the days of painting countless swatches directly onto your walls, only to regret the choice once the entire room is painted.

Above, you can see the ingenious Spot On Removable Paint Decals that we recently used to meticulously figure out the ideal paint color for the duplex shutters. These decals offer an incredibly practical solution, allowing you to test various shades without the mess and commitment of traditional paint samples. You might notice them appearing a little lumpy in the photo; this is simply because the surface we applied them to wasn’t perfectly smooth, and the shutters themselves are naturally louvered. However, on a flat, regular wall, these decals can be smoothed out seamlessly, providing an excellent representation of the true paint color. To keep track of our numerous options, I discreetly marked my little black initials in the top-left corner of each decal, corresponding to the specific paint color. This simple system made it incredibly easy to compare and contrast colors in different lighting conditions and against various elements of the existing exterior, proving an invaluable tool in our paint selection process.
Moving from home decor to leisure, Sherry has found her new favorite beach accessory: the SwimWays Spring Floats. These floats are an absolute game-changer for beach trips, primarily because of their incredibly compact size when folded. This feature makes them effortless to pack and transport, saving precious luggage space. What makes them even more appealing is their quick and easy inflation – Sherry swears it only takes about 10 blows to get them ready for the water! The graphic from the SwimWays website, which we couldn’t resist including below, does an exceptional job of illustrating just how cleverly these floats collapse for storage. Furthermore, for families with little ones, we’re happy to report that there’s also a baby version available, which we’ve happily used for our own children in the past, making beach days enjoyable for everyone.
Finally, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Room & Board for graciously sponsoring this episode.
