Mastering the Home Office: Our Ultimate Storage and Organization Reveal
Welcome back! Today, we’re thrilled to pull back the curtain and share the meticulous details of our newly organized office space. After investing in a significant storage upgrade, which included six new shelves, eight new drawers, additional drawers in my floating desk, and a dedicated filing/printer cabinet, it’s time to unveil exactly where everything found its home. This comprehensive guide will walk you through our strategies for creating a highly functional, clutter-free, and inspiring workspace, transforming our office into a bastion of productivity.

The sheer joy of having an abundance of storage, both openly accessible and neatly tucked away behind closed doors, is truly transformative. This newfound space is not just about tidiness; it’s about enhanced workflow, reduced stress, and an environment conducive to creativity and focus. Let’s begin our tour by turning to the left, where our impressive new desk and bookcase wall commands attention.

The Grand Tour Begins: Our Transformed Desk & Bookcase Wall
This section of the office is a testament to thoughtful design and strategic organization. What was once a challenge to keep tidy now stands as a model of efficiency, thanks to careful planning and a blend of aesthetic and practical solutions.
Unveiling the Bookcase Transformation
To truly appreciate the transformation, we’ve captured the dynamic process of organizing these shelves. As John hinted, these animated GIFs beautifully illustrate the journey from empty shelves to fully functional storage units. Witnessing the systematic arrangement of items unfold in fast motion highlights the immense potential of dedicated storage solutions. First, let’s observe the bookcase to the left of John’s desk as it comes to life:

And now, behold the right side of the bookcase, swiftly filling with carefully curated items, showcasing the completion of our vision for accessible and attractive storage:

Strategic Shelf Styling & Storage Solutions
Our open shelving isn’t just for display; it’s a meticulously planned system that combines aesthetics with practical storage for our professional and personal items.
Magazine Organization and Media Archives:
Nestled between both sides of the open shelves, we strategically placed eight magazine storage boxes sourced from Target. These aren’t just any magazines; they are a vital archive of our professional journey. We use these boxes to meticulously store all our press mentions, features of our site, and published columns. Previously, these valuable resources were haphazardly stashed in various dining room buffet cabinets. Now, they are immaculately organized by year, each with small, identifying tabs, making it incredibly easy to locate specific articles or references whenever needed. This systematic approach saves immense time and maintains the integrity of our media archives.

Decluttering and Repurposing for Desk Organization:
Beyond magazines, we seized the opportunity to declutter other areas of our home. A substantial collection of books, once inconveniently crammed into kitchen cabinets, now finds a proper home here. To further enhance organization and aesthetics, we incorporated several decorative storage boxes we already owned. The charming blue boxes, a sentimental reminder from my college days from Bed Bath & Beyond, and a lovely cream box acquired from HomeGoods last year, serve a dual purpose. They house various office supplies that would otherwise clutter our desk surfaces, maintaining a clean and focused workspace while adding pops of color and texture.

Showcasing Our Brand: Products and Publications:
Our office shelves also serve as a modest display for our creative endeavors. We’ve included several of our hook designs, some still in their packaging, alongside a few copies of our published book – both the English version and the Korean edition. This provides an excellent opportunity to display our work and brand identity. It’s also incredibly practical; if we ever host a meeting or a visitor, we can easily grab a copy of our book or a product sample directly from the shelves, showcasing our portfolio with ease and professionalism.

Visible Essentials: Notebooks & The Inbox System:
Not everything needs to be hidden away. A stack of beautifully designed notebooks and colorful Post-its, too pretty to be tucked into a drawer, now adds a touch of creative flair to the shelves. These frequently used items are easily accessible and contribute to an inviting workspace.

Alongside these, we established a dedicated “inbox” for magazine tear sheets. This simple drop zone has revolutionized our document management. Previously, these collected on the kitchen table or the back of the couch, creating unsightly clutter. Now, they have a temporary home until I can file them into their respective binders with clear sleeves. This interim solution ensures our surfaces remain clear. We even repurposed one of our charming octopus hooks to serve as a whimsical yet effective paperweight, adding personality to functionality.

Decor with a Secret: Multitasking Elements
Our shelves are also home to deceptively decorative objects that secretly perform essential functions, seamlessly blending aesthetics with utility. This approach to functional decor is key to maintaining a serene and organized office environment.
Hidden Cable Management Solutions:
Take, for instance, the spiky yellow vase from HomeGoods. While visually striking, its true purpose is to discreetly stash our various wires – extra chargers, headphones, and camera uploading cords. It’s incredibly satisfying to keep these less-than-lovely masses of cables incognito, yet perfectly easy to grab when needed. This simple solution prevents cable clutter from detracting from the overall aesthetic.
Magnetic Frame Wall Accessories & Creative Bookends:
A small zebra dish thoughtfully holds magnets for our magnetic frame wall, ensuring that these small but crucial items are always at hand. Next to it, a pink vase brims with dry-erase markers, perfectly positioned for quick access to that interactive zone. And finally, our beloved yellow horse head bookends, a playful nod to their memorable origin, add a vibrant splash of color while diligently holding our books upright. These elements exemplify how functional pieces can also be conversation starters and reflections of personality.

Personal Touches: Art and Inspiration
Beyond mere functionality, our office space is deeply personalized with items that evoke happiness and inspiration. These purely decorative objects create an environment that feels uniquely ours.
Sentimental Art and Cherished Memories:
Among these treasured items is my whimsical painting of our first house, a piece that holds immense sentimental value. It’s complemented by a beautiful painting of our second home, a thoughtful holiday surprise from our dear friend Lesli, gifted shortly after I completed my first house portrait. We also proudly display an extraordinary replica of our fireplace, a testament to Lisa’s incredible craftsmanship. Each piece tells a story, contributing to the rich tapestry of our home and work life.
Motivational Decor and Family History:
Further personalizing the space, our charming little bee painting adds a touch of whimsy, paired with an inspiring catalog tear-out from Boden that boldly states “Squeeze the day” – a perfect dose of office cheer and motivation. A prominent spot has also been dedicated to our collection of family yearbooks. I adore seeing this colorful stack, a visual timeline of our lives, alongside a cup brimming with Young House Love pencils in every shade of the rainbow, a sweet memento from our 2012 book tour. These elements infuse our workspace with warmth, personal history, and daily encouragement.

During our intensive organization spree, it was quite delightful to have our “bumble girl” immersed in her own creative projects – playing dress-up and making bead necklaces at her little desk. This lighthearted backdrop added a charming family dynamic to our organizational efforts, reminding us that a productive space can still be a shared, joyful one.

Drawer by Drawer: A Deeper Dive into Office Organization
Beyond the open shelves, the true power of our office organization lies within our various drawer systems, each meticulously planned to store specific categories of items, from daily essentials to archival documents.
John’s Desk Drawers: A Mix of Practicality and Potential
Right Side Drawers: Future-Proofing and Design Resources:
The drawers to the right of John’s desk offer a strategic balance of current storage and future capacity. We deliberately left two drawers completely empty, a decision that brings immense satisfaction. This “room to grow” is invaluable, providing flexibility for future office expansion without immediate clutter. Another drawer is partially filled with various paint decks, an essential resource for our design work. The final drawer is dedicated to cherished magazines, such as every original issue of Domino, alongside catalogs we frequently reference for inspiration and product sourcing. These are too valuable to discard and now have a dedicated, accessible home.

Left Side Drawers: Essential Office and Archival Storage:
The drawers to the left of John’s desk are reserved for more critical, office-related items, emphasizing both security and accessibility. The two closed drawers in the photograph are specifically used for design prototypes currently under development and tweaking, ensuring these sensitive materials are kept confidential. The top open drawer is the command center for all our tax-related documents: receipts, file boxes of back taxes, and quarterly paperwork that needs to be filled out and mailed in. This centralizes our financial records, simplifying tax preparation. The bottom open drawer houses essential technical backups and resources, including external hard drives for data security, old notebooks filled with vital information we still reference, and a large Ziploc bag containing miscellaneous instruction manuals and warranties for electronics like our printer and camera. This systematic approach ensures that critical information and devices are both protected and easily retrievable.

The Printer/File Cabinet: Essential Command Center
Our dedicated printer/file cabinet is another cornerstone of our office’s organizational success, brimming with crucial documents and other tax/work-related materials. This indispensable piece, the Ikea Effectiv cabinet (regrettably discontinued a while back), plays a vital role in keeping our essential paperwork in order. Here’s a glimpse of it in its closed, streamlined state:

Upon opening, its efficient internal layout is revealed. On the top left, we store our paper supplies and camera case, ensuring they are protected and readily available. Our wireless printer occupies the top right, positioned for optimal accessibility. All our critical files, meticulously categorized, reside in the bottom drawer, creating a streamlined and highly efficient command center for all our document management needs.

My Floating Desk: Streamlined Workflow & Style
My floating desk by the window, a fantastic Craigslist find that we acquired for free, provides four additional drawers for my personal use. Its generous top surface is intentionally kept clear and minimalist, featuring only a few essential notebooks and two elegant vases filled with various writing paraphernalia. These pencils, in particular, are indispensable tools for our book editing processes, highlighting how even small details contribute to a focused workflow.

Maximizing a Compact Workspace
Each drawer at my desk is optimized for specific needs, reflecting a balance between current utility and future flexibility. The top right drawer conveniently houses frequently used items such as scissors, staplers, and other daily essentials. The right middle drawer is dedicated to stationery and thank-you cards, keeping these personal touches organized and accessible. Crucially, the skinny middle drawer and the bottom right drawer remain empty, intentionally preserved for “space to expand” as our needs evolve. Furthermore, an entire cabinet on the left side of the desk also remains empty, offering even more room for growth – a wonderfully reassuring feeling that signals readiness for whatever comes next in our creative and professional endeavors.

The Joy of a Highly Organized Office
And there you have it – our comprehensive “where-it-all-went” rundown of our newly organized office space. It’s hard to believe it took us nearly a year to find the perfect permanent homes for items as seemingly simple as a stapler and all our various receipts. Yet, the profound satisfaction derived from this transformation feels immensely rewarding, perhaps even more so than one might expect. This journey, while gradual, has culminated in an office that functions seamlessly, supporting our daily work and inspiring our creativity.

The exhilaration of having a designated spot for every single item is surprisingly addictive. It creates an almost meditative sense of calm and control, even as our rational minds acknowledge that perfect order is often a temporary state, and things will inevitably begin to “multiply or explode” again in due time. For now, however, we are thoroughly savoring this period of impeccable organization, soaking up every moment of efficiency and visual serenity. We hope our detailed approach offers inspiration for your own office organization endeavors!
