In the realm of home makeovers, some transformations transcend mere aesthetics, delving deep into the very heart of a family’s journey. This isn’t your typical before-and-after story, focused on budgets or dramatic design shifts. Instead, it’s a narrative steeped in profound emotion, community spirit, and the quiet power of creating a sanctuary when it’s needed most. It’s a project that we approached with both trepidation and immense honor, unsure if words could truly capture the weight and beauty of what transpired. Yet, here we are, ready to share a story far more impactful than any design trend could ever be.

Creating a Celestial Sanctuary: A Heartfelt Outer Space Bedroom Makeover for Hudson

Life can change in an instant, and for the Newton family, an unimaginable tragedy struck when their four-year-old son, Mason, passed away suddenly from a respiratory virus last month. Mason, a vibrant preschooler who adored superheroes, left behind his older brother and best friend, Hudson, almost six. The grief was profound, and understandably, their home became a painful reminder of their loss. For Hudson, the bedroom he once shared with Mason had become a place he could no longer comfortably sleep in.

Robbie and Chrissy, Hudson’s parents, recognized that a crucial step in their family’s healing process, and in helping Hudson navigate his grief, was to transform their shared room into a dedicated space for him. This was a task too emotionally taxing for them to undertake alone. While we didn’t know the Newtons personally, their story reached us through a friend who was deeply involved in rallying incredible community support. And that’s where our journey began.

Community Spirit in Action: A Race Against Time for Hudson’s Dream Room

When the call came asking if we could assist with Hudson’s bedroom, we didn’t hesitate. A resounding “Of course!” was shouted into the phone, details or not. We soon learned that the Newtons were leaving town for a few days – a much-needed respite at a beach house generously offered by friends. This presented a unique challenge and opportunity: a small but workable window, from Monday night to Thursday afternoon, to completely transform the room. With an “incredible army of supporters” already mobilized to refresh other areas of the house, we cleared our schedules, rolled up our sleeves, and prepared for an intense few days.

Our first critical step involved understanding Hudson’s interests. We learned he was fascinated by outer space, science, planets, and superheroes – a perfect theme for a boy embarking on a new chapter. The Newtons also expressed a desire for fresh paint, a loft bed, a cozy reading chair, and a functional desk. With this clear vision in mind, and the family away, the transformation began in earnest.

The Canvas of the Cosmos: Painting Hudson’s Space-Themed Bedroom

A neighbor had arranged for painters, allowing us to focus on selecting the perfect color palette to evoke a sense of calm and wonder. We chose Benjamin Moore’s Simply White for three of the walls, utilizing a semi-gloss finish for doors and trim, flat for the ceiling, and eggshell for the walls to create a bright, airy foundation. For a dramatic accent behind where the bed would be, we opted for the deep, rich tones of Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy, reminiscent of a vast night sky. This paint wasn’t just purchased; our local Home Depot, upon hearing the story, generously color-matched and donated all the paint needed for the project – a testament to the community’s outpouring of support.

Here’s what the room looked like on Tuesday morning, after friends and neighbors had cleared it out, and the painters were hard at work bringing our vision to life:

By Wednesday morning, the fresh paint was dry, the room felt clean and ready, a blank canvas awaiting its celestial elements. The transformation was already palpable, a breath of fresh air filling the space.

The Constellation Wall: A Personal Touch of Starlight and Memories

One of the project’s most significant hurdles was sourcing furniture and decor within such a tight timeframe. Their church generously donated funds for most of the new items, and we supplemented the budget, but we were restricted to immediately available, in-store purchases – ruling out leisurely online searches or thrift store hunts. Fortunately, a few favors could be called in, which proved invaluable.

While the room was being painted on Tuesday, we meticulously planned and shopped. Then, on Wednesday, we dove into what became one of our favorite projects: creating the “Constellation Wall” behind the bed. This DIY accent wall was not only visually stunning but also deeply meaningful.

Using a night sky map on his phone as a reference, John carefully drew the constellation line segments with a silver Sharpie paint pen and a yardstick. We’ve used these paint pens on our own walls for projects in our books, so we could confidently vouch for their durability and their ability to be painted over should Hudson’s tastes evolve. This ensures the design is both beautiful and adaptable.

I followed closely behind, using a second paint pen to add circles for the stars wherever the lines of the constellations met or ended. This layering technique created depth and a genuine starry effect.

The final touch for this celestial masterpiece involved both of us adding countless more stars across the entire wall, surrounding and filling in the spaces between the constellations. Varying the size of the dots gave the wall incredible dimension, while clusters and swarms of stars mimicked the breathtaking density found in actual constellation maps. The entire process, from start to finish, took approximately 2.5 hours.

One of the most touching aspects of this project was hiding a large “H” for Hudson among the stars, and an “M” for Mason on the opposite side. It was incredibly moving to hear that Hudson not only loved his new wall but immediately spotted both hidden initials upon entering his room.

Furnishing the Explorer’s Retreat: Loft Bed, Play Zone, and Reading Nook

The loft bed, a key element Hudson had specifically hoped for, was sourced from Rooms-to-Go Kids. We were incredibly fortunate to find a floor model at a great price, making it an instant purchase – a necessity given our tight schedule. The discovery was even more serendipitous because most loft beds in our area were either out of stock or “order only,” requiring weeks for delivery. After hearing about the project, our wonderful friends at Biringer Builders stepped in and generously covered the entire cost of the bed, further highlighting the community’s overwhelming generosity.

For the bedding, we chose a charming star-themed set from Pottery Barn Kids. While we initially considered a duvet, we ultimately opted for the simplicity of a folded white quilt at the foot of the bed. We learned firsthand that making a loft bed can be a bit challenging, and simplicity was key for daily ease.

Underneath the loft bed, we initially envisioned a desk, but decided that a plush bean bag and practical toy baskets would create a more inviting and flexible casual play space or even a secret hideout. The desk we had purchased still fits perfectly underneath if the Newtons ever wish to reconfigure the space. To add a touch of playful charm, a battery-operated star marquee was included, ensuring no visible cords to detract from the clean design.

Thoughtful Details: From Rugs to Rocket Ships

Turning our attention to the other side of the room, an 8 x 10′ rug from HomeGoods became an 11th-hour switch. We had initially selected a green and navy rug, but as the room came together, it felt too visually heavy. The replacement, with its softer tones, layered into the large, open play space much more seamlessly, contributing to a sense of calm and expansive play.

Since the Newtons primarily used their double-doored closet for clothes, a dresser wasn’t needed. However, a desk was on their wish list. This elegant wood and metal desk fit perfectly beside the window. We complemented it with a comfortable blue fabric chair and a soft green desk lamp from Target. A colorful fan and navy curtains from HomeGoods tied in the room’s overarching color scheme. The artwork above the desk is a cherished Help Ink print, which we framed in a simple wood frame. We had owned it for a while and knew instantly, upon hearing Hudson’s love for space and exploration, that it belonged in his new room.

Tucked just beyond the desk, in the corner visible upon entering the room, stands one of our absolute favorite custom pieces: the rocket ship shelf, or “rocketshelf” as we affectionately dubbed it. Jesse and Tyler, friends of the Newtons, generously offered their carpentry skills. Based on a Pinterest photo we provided, they whipped this stunning piece up late one night – it was an amazing, almost instantaneous creation. The stain color, a blend of one coat of Minwax Jacobean followed by one coat of Minwax Classic Gray, was chosen to harmonize with the various other dark finishes throughout the room, such as some of the frames and the desk legs.

Along the right wall, we framed pages John carefully cut from one of his favorite books, “Things Come Apart.” This book is filled with “nerd-tastic” photographs of machines and technology meticulously deconstructed and arranged. Knowing Hudson’s passion for science, space, and experiments, John immediately grabbed the book. We selected two photos of a telescope – one with its pieces organized in a grid, the other with parts beautifully exploded across the page – and a third image of a deconstructed model airplane, which we hung between them. John and Hudson’s dad shared a delightful conversation about these prints, even inspiring Hudson’s dad to bring up Hudson’s own telescope. These images were carefully framed in two of these frames and one of these frames.

In the dedicated reading corner, we anchored the space with a supremely comfortable gray chair, a generous donation from LaDiff, an excellent local furniture company, after we shared the Newtons’ story. They offered us a choice of three chairs, and after some “Goldilocks” style testing in their showroom, this one was declared “juuuuust right.” Above it, a solar system mobile from Pottery Barn Kids instantly brought life and vibrant color to the recessed nook, adding a playful yet educational touch. Pun intended, it really did perk up the space with planets!

Given that Hudson and Mason had a wonderful collection of dress-up costumes (Mason famously wore superhero outfits to church almost weekly), we included a stylish hook rail from HomeGoods on the small wall segment next to the closet. Above it hangs another Help Ink print, generously donated and even overnight-shipped specifically for this project. Help Ink is truly an exceptional company, donating $1 for every $5 spent on their site, and their prints fit into this room’s theme with uncanny perfection.

Finally, addressing the lighting, the Newtons mentioned they never used the old ceiling fan, and the combination of a lofted bed with spinning blades made us a little nervous! We replaced it with a sleek, ceiling-mounted drum shade pendant light that we had recently designed with Shades of Light, who kindly donated it. This fixture provides ample light with two bulbs, and we ensured they were energy-efficient LEDs, so the Newtons wouldn’t have to worry about replacements for a long time.

Beyond the Decor: A Testament to Selflessness and Love

While we’ve detailed the “things” that went into creating this incredible space, this makeover was never truly about the objects themselves. It was, and always will be, about the extraordinary effort, the profound selflessness, and the boundless love demonstrated by friends, family, and neighbors. Their collective impression on us was immense. We all hope to be surrounded by such unwavering support when we need it most.

Please indulge us as we take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to Jenn, Jamie, Jesse, Tyler, Matt, Joe, Stephanie, Crystal, Emily, Kristin, Laura, and countless others who helped us clear the room, organize the closet, and even assisted me in wrestling a particularly stubborn bunkie board into place while John took an un-reschedulable conference call from his “mobile office” (aka, the car). A huge thank you also goes to every individual and organization who donated to this project: La Diff, Biringer Builders, Shades of Light, Help Ink, Journey Christian Church, and even my mom, who happened to be in town and quietly slipped money into my pocket mid-hug when I explained why she and the kids would be spending extra quality time together while we were busy.

A Mother’s Peace: The True Meaning of a Home Makeover

When the Newton family pulled into their driveway last Thursday evening, we gathered outside with friends and neighbors to welcome them. We respectfully stayed outdoors, allowing them to experience their “refreshed” home as a family. Beyond Hudson’s bedroom, friends and relatives had tackled numerous updates and organizational projects on the first floor, in the garage, and in the hall bathroom. After a little while, we were invited in to introduce ourselves, share moments, exchange hugs and tears, and express our gratitude for being involved in such a meaningful endeavor. Receiving a big hug from Hudson and watching him joyfully play in his new loft bed with his friends was undeniably the highlight of the entire evening.

After days spent operating at hyper-speed, it wasn’t until we returned home that night that the full emotional weight of it all began to sink in. We sat quietly, processing everything, and found ourselves wondering if Hudson had slept in his new room. Lo and behold, the very next morning, we received the most beautiful answer. His mom shared these powerful words: “Hudson willingly went into his room and played… and slept. He had no reservations. Just peace.

Cue all the feelings. This was more than a room makeover; it was a profound act of love, compassion, and healing.

Psst – If you’d like to support the Newton family, they are graciously donating all money raised in a GoFundMe account towards a new play area/preschool for their church, which will be created in Mason’s honor. We can’t imagine a more deserving family to lift up with love and kindness.
