Transforming an Old Frame: A Modern Paint-Dipped Masterpiece with Fusion Mineral Paint
Welcome back to another exciting installment of our monthly creative journey! This month, the #12MonthsofDIY challenge beckoned us to embrace the beauty and versatility of wood, leading to a host of inspiring projects under the banner of #MarchWoodworking. I was absolutely thrilled when Fusion Mineral Paints generously offered to provide paint for all participants in the challenge. This partnership was a true blessing, perfectly aligning with a vision I had been nurturing for quite some time.
My inspiration for this particular project stemmed from the incredibly unique and captivating work of artist Oliver Jeffers. He has a distinctive style where he paints portraits and then, with a bold artistic flourish, dips them – frame and all – into a bucket of paint, creating a striking visual contrast. This audacious approach sparked an idea in my mind: what if I could capture that same modern, artful “paint-dipped” effect on an existing picture frame, giving it a new lease on life? The concept was simple yet profound, promising to elevate a forgotten piece into a contemporary statement. And so, the journey to create my very own paint-dipped frame began.
The Journey to Transformation: Revisiting an Old Frame
Years ago, I stumbled upon a truly beautiful, ornate picture frame crafted from rich mahogany wood. Its intricate carvings and classic appeal were undeniable, but its dark, traditional finish didn’t quite fit the aesthetic I was cultivating at the time. Eager to modernize it, I attempted a makeover using spray paint. While the general idea was sound, and I appreciated the effort, the execution left much to be desired. The color I chose, which I hoped would be a crisp white, turned out to be more of a creamy yellow – a hue that consistently bothered me. Furthermore, the spray paint application wasn’t as flawless as I’d hoped, resulting in an uneven finish that always caught my eye. It was clear that this beloved frame, full of potential, was long overdue for a proper refresh, a second chance at becoming the stunning centerpiece it was meant to be.
Here’s a closer look at what the picture frame resembled before this latest transformation. From a distance, it didn’t appear to be a complete disaster, but upon closer inspection, the flaws became glaringly obvious. The most significant issues for me were the colors: the mat had a distinct pinkish tint, which clashed with almost everything, and the frame itself, as mentioned, leaned heavily towards a dull yellow rather than the bright white I had originally envisioned. These discordant colors consistently bugged me, diminishing the frame’s inherent beauty and failing to complement any artwork placed within it. It was unequivocally time for a significant update, a complete overhaul that would breathe new life into this vintage treasure and finally allow it to shine.
Gather Your Supplies: Materials for Your Paint-Dipped Frame
Before diving into any DIY project, proper preparation is key. Gathering all your materials beforehand ensures a smooth and enjoyable crafting experience. For this paint-dipped frame makeover, here’s what you’ll need:
- An Old Picture Frame: Preferably one with some ornate detailing to truly showcase the two-tone effect. A wooden frame is ideal for paint adherence.
- Fusion Mineral Paint: I highly recommend “Lamp White” for a crisp, clean finish. This paint is a game-changer, as you’ll soon discover.
- Gold Spray Paint: Choose a metallic gold that offers good coverage and a rich sheen for the base layer.
- Painter’s Tape: Essential for creating those sharp, clean lines for the “dipped” effect. Having a few different widths can be helpful for intricate areas.
- Drop Cloth or Newspaper: To protect your work surface from paint splatters.
- Cleaning Supplies: A mild cleaner, water, and a lint-free cloth to ensure your frame is dust and grease-free before painting.
- Fine-Grit Sandpaper (Optional): If your frame has particularly rough spots or peeling old paint, a light sanding can help prepare the surface.
- Small Paint Brush: For applying the Fusion Mineral Paint and ensuring thorough coverage, especially in detailed areas.
Having these items ready will set you up for success, making the transformation process efficient and rewarding.
Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Paint-Dipped Masterpiece
Step 1: Thorough Preparation – The Foundation of a Flawless Finish
The first crucial step in any successful paint project is preparation. Begin by thoroughly cleaning your ornate picture frame. Over the years, frames can accumulate dust, grime, and even residues from old polishes. Use a mild all-purpose cleaner and a damp, lint-free cloth to meticulously wipe down every surface, paying close attention to the intricate carvings and corners. Allow the frame to dry completely. If your frame has any loose or peeling paint from previous attempts, or if the surface is exceptionally glossy, a light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (around 220-grit) will help create a better adhesion for the new paint. After sanding, wipe away any dust with a tack cloth or a damp cloth to ensure a perfectly clean canvas.
Step 2: Precision Taping for the Inner Gold Accent
This is where the magic of the “dipped” effect truly begins to take shape. Carefully apply painter’s tape along the inner edge of the frame, precisely where the frame meets the mat. The goal here is to protect the mat and create a crisp, clean line for your initial gold application. Take your time to press the tape down firmly, ensuring there are no gaps or bubbles where paint could seep underneath. This meticulous taping will define the inner gold border, which will eventually peek through your white “dip.”
Step 3: Laying Down the Gold – Your First Layer of Radiance
With the inner edges taped, it’s time for your first coat of paint. In a well-ventilated area, and with your drop cloth protecting your work surface, apply the gold spray paint to the entire frame. Remember, multiple light coats are always better than one heavy coat. A heavy application can lead to drips and an uneven finish. Aim for full coverage, ensuring all the original mahogany (or previous paint layer) is concealed by the gleaming gold. Allow each coat to dry fully according to the manufacturer’s instructions before applying the next. Patience here is paramount to achieving a smooth, professional-looking gold base.
Step 4: Creating the “Dip” Line – Strategic Taping for the White Layer
Once your gold spray paint is completely dry and cured, it’s time for the most critical taping stage to create the distinctive “paint-dipped” look. Referring back to Oliver Jeffers’ inspiration, decide where you want the “dip” line to be – typically around one-third to half-way up the frame. Apply painter’s tape horizontally across the frame at your chosen height. Ensure the line is perfectly straight and level across all sides of the frame. This step requires precision and attention to detail. Additionally, use smaller pieces of tape to mask off any intricate carvings or areas within the “dipped” section that you wish to remain gold, or any “nooks and crannies” that you want to specifically protect from the white paint. Firmly press down all tape edges to prevent any bleed-through.
Step 5: The White Elegance – Applying Fusion Mineral Paint
Now for the main event: applying the Fusion Mineral Paint. I chose the shade “Lamp White,” and it proved to be the perfect crisp, clean white I had always desired for this frame. With your small paintbrush, carefully apply the Fusion Mineral Paint to the section of the frame below your horizontal tape line, extending down to the bottom. I found that Fusion Mineral Paint was an absolute dream to work with; it went on incredibly smooth and provided excellent coverage with just two very light coats. The texture is fantastic, and it self-levels beautifully, minimizing brush strokes. While it took a bit longer to dry than some chalk paints I’ve used in the past, this was actually a benefit, allowing ample time for any touch-ups or to remove stray hairs that might have found their way into the wet paint. Apply your second light coat once the first is dry to the touch, ensuring complete opacity and an even finish.
Step 6: Addressing the Mat – A Cohesive Finish
During this stage, I found myself debating intensely about what to do with the mat. The original mat was made of a lovely linen fabric, but its previous pinkish hue had always bothered me, especially when paired with the yellowed frame. With the fresh gold and the crisp white of the frame, the mat’s existing color still felt off. While I initially considered leaving it as is with the gold, it starkly contrasted with the new white section, just as it had with the old paint. My solution was to carefully paint the mat white, but only in the section where the frame itself was painted white. This created a seamless transition from the “dipped” frame into the mat, unifying the entire piece and eliminating the distracting pink tone. Use a small, precise brush for this, taking care to stay within the lines.
Step 7: The Reveal and Curing
Once your final coat of Fusion Mineral Paint and the mat paint are dry to the touch, carefully and slowly peel away all the painter’s tape. Peel it off at a 45-degree angle for the cleanest lines. This is always the most satisfying part of any painting project, as the crisp lines and the beautiful contrast are revealed. Admire your handiwork! While the paint will be dry to the touch relatively quickly, Fusion Mineral Paint, like many high-quality paints, has a curing period. For optimal durability and hardness, it’s best to allow the frame to cure for about 21-30 days before exposing it to heavy use or cleaning. For a decorative frame, it’s ready to display and enjoy much sooner, but gentle handling is advised during the initial curing phase.
Here’s a glimpse of the Fusion Mineral Paint in its bottle, presented alongside the freshly painted frame. This comparison visually demonstrates the purity and accuracy of the “Lamp White” shade. It’s a testament to how closely the actual paint color matches its representation, reinforcing the quality and consistency that Fusion Mineral Paint delivers for your DIY projects.

The Finished Frame: A Modern Elegance Unleashed
The transformation is complete, and the results are everything I envisioned and more! The old, tired mahogany frame with its problematic yellowed paint and pinkish mat has been reborn into a sophisticated, modern piece of art. The crisp lines of the “paint-dipped” effect create a stunning visual interest, with the gleaming gold accent providing a beautiful contrast to the immaculate “Lamp White.” The decision to carefully paint the mat white in the “dipped” section was absolutely the right one, creating a cohesive and harmonious look that truly allows the frame’s ornate details to shine without distraction. This frame now embodies a refined elegance that will perfectly complement any contemporary or classic decor, proving that sometimes, all a beloved old item needs is a fresh perspective and a little bit of paint to rediscover its full potential.
Reviewing Fusion Mineral Paint: A DIY Dream Come True
Working with Fusion Mineral Paint for this project was an absolute revelation. From the moment I dipped my brush into the pot, it was truly a dream to paint with. The paint boasts an incredibly smooth consistency, allowing for effortless application that glides onto the surface. Its coverage is simply outstanding, achieving a rich, opaque finish with just two very light coats. This not only saves paint but also ensures a professional-looking result without the dreaded thick, caked-on appearance.
One notable difference I observed compared to some chalk paints I’ve used in the past was its drying time. Fusion Mineral Paint took a bit longer to dry, and surprisingly, I found this to be a significant advantage. This extended drying window provided ample opportunity for me to meticulously touch up any areas, smooth out imperfections, or even carefully remove any stray dust or hairs that might have settled into the wet paint without rushing or leaving marks. This forgiving nature is a huge plus for both novice and experienced DIYers.
But what truly captivated and utterly amazed me about Fusion Mineral Paint is its game-changing feature: it doesn’t require a top coat! What?! This was genuinely mind-blowing for me. As much as I adore painting furniture and tackling various DIY projects, the top coat application has always been a challenging step that I haven’t quite mastered. It can be tricky to apply evenly, often leaving streaks or an inconsistent finish. The idea of skipping this often-frustrating step without compromising durability seemed too good to be true. Yet, here we are!
Right now, the finish on my paint-dipped frame is absolutely perfect as is. It feels sealed, dry, and incredibly firm – not sticky or tacky in the slightest. The surface has a lovely, smooth matte sheen that feels robust and protected. Curious about its durability, I subjected it to a good scratch test with my fingernails, and I was incredibly impressed to find that it didn’t scrape or mark. This inherent toughness, without the need for an additional protective layer, makes Fusion Mineral Paint an ideal choice for high-traffic items or, as in this case, a beautiful frame that deserves to stand the test of time.
This experience has left me incredibly intrigued and eager to explore more possibilities with Fusion Mineral Paint. Has anyone out there used mineral paint, or even chalk paint, in a sprayer? I’m contemplating its potential for larger projects like my coffee table or even my piano, where a flawless, durable finish is paramount. Imagine the ease and speed of application combined with this incredible, no-top-coat durability! I’d love to hear about your experiences and tips!
