Welcome back, fellow DIY enthusiasts and lovers of all things miniature! You’ve been asking for an update on our latest renovation adventure – a project that’s both grand in vision and delightful in its tiny scale. We’re thrilled to share the exciting progress on our second dollhouse makeover, a journey filled with creativity, collaboration, and countless charming details. If you’re new to our miniature world or missed the magic of our first tiny house transformation, be sure to check it out here to catch up on all the tiny wonders!

This particular dollhouse holds a special place in our hearts, as its architectural style remarkably echoes the design of our own full-sized house. This delightful resemblance has added an extra layer of enjoyment to the entire renovation process. What truly makes this project unique and incredibly fulfilling is the pivotal role our nine-year-old daughter has taken on. She’s not just a participant; she’s the lead general contractor, the visionary interior designer, and the imaginative architect, all rolled into one! Her enthusiasm is infectious, and it’s been an absolute blast watching her lead this intricate dollhouse renovation.
From meticulously helping with painting and crafting miniature art pieces to thoughtfully selecting color palettes, arranging tiny furniture, and brainstorming future project ideas, she has truly been at the helm of this creative endeavor. Witnessing her passion and leadership has been incredibly heartwarming for my house-loving soul. And, as for me, I’m more than happy to play the role of the dutiful assistant and, of course, the budget realist – a crucial role in any renovation, miniature or otherwise! This collaborative spirit has made every step of the journey a cherished family memory, turning a simple toy into a genuine family DIY project.

While the dollhouse has already come a tremendous way, we anticipate this will be an ongoing project for the next few years. There’s an ever-growing list of dream additions we hope to incorporate, from more intricate furniture pieces and functional miniature lighting to a grand spiral staircase leading up to the attic – a feature we’re particularly excited about! Despite the long-term vision, the progress we’ve made so far in this tiny house makeover is truly remarkable. Let’s take a look at where we started. Here’s how the front of the dollhouse appeared when it first entered our lives. You can delve into the fascinating backstory of how this gem became ours by listening to this podcast episode.

A Fresh Canvas: Exterior & Interior Foundations for Our Miniature Home
Our initial approach to the dollhouse’s exterior was straightforward yet transformative. With our daughter’s strong preference to maintain a crisp white façade – a choice deeply rooted in its charming resemblance to our own home – we focused on a fresh, clean aesthetic. We gave the entire exterior a luminous coat of white paint, instantly brightening and modernizing its look. The roof, too, received a complementary update with a sophisticated shade of gray, meticulously mimicking the roofline of our family residence. However, our imaginative nine-year-old project manager already has grander visions! She dreams of a luxurious slate roof, a detail we’re excited to explore down the line. We’re considering using super shiny paint and delicate cedar shingles to achieve that authentic slate appearance. Rest assured, we’ll keep you updated on that ambitious plan as this DIY dollhouse renovation continues!
In stark contrast to the dollhouse’s existing front, the back of the structure was truly a blank canvas when we acquired it. This offered an incredible opportunity for a complete creative overhaul, allowing us to design from the ground up without any pre-existing elements to contend with, making it the perfect start for a personalized miniature home.

And here it is now, transformed into a bright and inviting space, thanks to the magic of fresh white walls and pristine floors. This design choice, championed by our daughter, truly makes me proud; it’s a clear case of “chip off the old block” when it comes to her excellent taste in light, airy backgrounds! This strategic decision is incredibly smart because it creates the perfect foundation for layering in bold furniture colors – think rich navy, vibrant turquoise, and striking red. It also allows colorful patterned fabrics, such as the delightful bedding and sophisticated sofa upholstery, and even unexpected elements like the faux pink marble in the kitchen, to truly pop and shine. I’m seriously considering consulting my kids for every design project we undertake from now on, as their intuitive sense of style and color is absolutely brilliant! This personalized approach makes our dollhouse interior design unique.

Culinary Charms: The Dollhouse Kitchen Makeover
Imagine if we possessed a “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” raygun – we’d instantly shrink ourselves down to dollhouse size and enjoy a delightful meal in this utterly adorable kitchen. I am absolutely head-over-heels for the faux pink marble island, a true showstopper that adds a touch of unexpected luxury to our miniature culinary space. I’ll share the ingenious secret behind its creation in just a moment.
We had an absolute blast painting all the miniature appliances and cabinetry. Our chosen shade was a cheerful light blue craft paint, creating a cohesive and inviting look. The only exception was a charming little shelving unit, which our daughter insisted on painting a sophisticated deep navy, adding a lovely contrast and depth to the kitchen. The dollhouse also came with a treasure trove of hand-me-down furniture, and tucked away in a dusty old box, we discovered the most exquisite tiny shelf brackets! Honestly, I didn’t know miniature shelf brackets could be so utterly charming until that very moment – they might just be the cutest things on the planet, perfect for dollhouse decor!

Adding a touch of natural beauty, we also crafted that sweet little potted plant nestled in the bottom corner of the kitchen. This simple DIY involved nothing more than a tiny clipping from my favorite faux desk plant, carefully “shoved” into a small bucket that was part of the secondhand dollhouse furniture collection. It appeared to be an old well bucket, but since there was no well in sight, a quick coat of gray paint transformed it into a perfect miniature plant pot, far more suited to its new role as a delightful piece of dollhouse decor.
The Secret to Affordable Miniature Decor: Secondhand Treasures
A frequently asked question revolves around sourcing affordable dollhouse furniture, and our secret weapon for both this dollhouse and our first one has consistently been secondhand “lots” of furniture. These incredible finds typically come either included with the dollhouses themselves or from separate purchases made on platforms like Facebook Marketplace. The value is unbeatable – you can often acquire a substantial collection of miniature pieces in one box for under $30, sometimes even as little as $15! This approach not only makes dollhouse decorating incredibly budget-friendly but also sparks immense creativity in transforming found objects.
With secondhand pieces, you gain the freedom to paint, repurpose, and repair them to fit your specific vision. This is a significantly more economical choice compared to purchasing new items individually, which can frequently cost $15 for a single piece. The thrill of transforming overlooked treasures into stylish miniature furnishings is a core part of the joy we find in these DIY dollhouse projects, promoting sustainability and imaginative design.
For the kitchen backsplash, we embraced another clever DIY hack: a subway tile wall created with remarkable ease. A quick online image search for “white subway tile” provided the perfect pattern, which we printed out several times, adjusting the scale until it looked just right for our miniature space. Then, with a simple glue stick, we covered the entire right wall from floor to ceiling. This project was, I kid you not, 99.99% easier than attempting real tile installation – a true testament to the wonders of dollhouse crafting and achieving realistic effects with minimal effort!

Those charming blue pots you see on the shelf were a fantastic find, sourced conveniently from Amazon, adding a pop of color to the kitchen. Now, for the reveal of that much-loved pink marble island! The secret weapon? A broken refrigerator that originally came with our other dollhouse. It was missing its two vertical doors and was, in this photo, lying on its back. However, I had an epiphany: if we flipped it over so the flat back faced upwards, it would instantly resemble a perfectly proportioned island, ideal for our dollhouse kitchen design!

When I asked our daughter what kind of countertop she envisioned for the island, her immediate and confident answer was “pink marble.” I honestly hadn’t even considered that as an option, but a quick Google image search confirmed its existence and beauty! We found a gorgeous image, printed it to scale, and simply used a glue stick to adhere it to the top. Voila! Instant, stylish pink marble island. Dollhouse kitchen renovations are so incredibly easy and satisfying that they might just spoil me for real-life kitchen projects, proving the power of creative miniature solutions!
Let’s admire another angle of this charming kitchen, highlighting the cute little navy cabinet that was originally a plain brown. The touch of navy adds such a fun, contemporary flair. All the delightful miniature cakes and treats adorning the kitchen came from a tiny treat shop our kids received from my mom for Christmas – you can read more about that delightful (and slightly chaotic!) acquisition here. The sole exception is that elegant tiered dish of macaroons on the island, which our daughter carefully selected and purchased from Amazon using a Christmas gift card. It was truly a joy to watch our children meticulously weigh all the tiny options for their dollhouse, always settling on the most adorable things. Remember their excellent choice of this cute gingerbread platter, thanks to an Amazon gift card from their uncle? Their discerning eye for miniature decor is truly impressive!

We also had a creative blast making framed botanical art for the kitchen walls. This simple DIY involved clipping beautiful botanical images from a magazine and then “framing” them by gluing them onto slightly larger rectangles cut from a paper bag, giving them a rustic yet elegant border. The miniature wood cutting boards on the wall were another ingenious creation. We simply found a page in a magazine with a convincing wood pattern, sketched out cutting board shapes directly onto the wooden part of the picture, cut them out, and glued them to the wall. Even the charming wall clock was a magazine cutout – just some careful cutting and pasting, and suddenly our dollhouse residents could tell time! These quick and easy projects truly highlight the endless possibilities of repurposing everyday materials in the miniature world, adding character to our DIY dollhouse.
Elegant Retreats: Living Room & Beyond
Now, let’s transition to the living room, a truly exceptional space that came with an incredible bonus: built-in shelving and a charming fireplace! I know, it sounds like a dream house feature, even in miniature form. We’ve been keeping an eye out for tiny birch logs to create a cozy faux fire in the firebox, but for now, the built-ins are adorned with a delightful assortment of miniature treasures. Among them is an amazing tiny replica of a real art piece we created a while back. Do you remember this memorable project? Well, our incredibly talented friend Jessica, from Craftiness Is Not Optional, sent a surprise dollhouse care package for the kids, and we absolutely shrieked with delight when we discovered she had made that mini art piece just for us! It’s these thoughtful, personal touches that make our dollhouse truly special.

Jessica’s incredible craftsmanship extended to the cool birch slice coffee table you see, another wonderful addition to the living room. The elegant brass coat rack, along with the classic sofa and chairs, were all existing pieces of furniture that came with the dollhouses. However, we gave the sofa a quick and dramatic refresh. I carefully pried up the formerly red velvet seat cushion and recovered it with a vibrant, bold fabric that our daughter lovingly chose. This simple upholstery hack instantly made the sofa feel fresh and modern, taking literally five minutes to complete! I didn’t even sew it; I just stretched the fabric around the cushion, secured it with a strip of duct tape on the bottom, and then reinforced it with craft glue. This instant dollhouse upholstery technique is making real upholstery seem impossibly difficult by comparison! Oh, and the striking blue mirror on the wall is another clever magazine cutout, simply glued onto the freshly painted wall – a free, fun, and impactful decor element for our miniature home.
And take a closer look at the rug in the living room – it’s such an easy DIY project! We had some old burlap scraps tucked away in my fabric drawer. We simply cut them into small rectangles and then gently frayed the edges a little on each of the two shorter sides. Voila! An instant, rustic-chic jute rug, adding warmth and texture to the miniature space without any cost, a perfect example of creative dollhouse decor.

Looking ahead, we’re planning to add some miniature hardware to the cabinets beneath the bookcases, and perhaps even some tiny tile to the inside of the firebox for an extra touch of realism. However, for the time being, the living room is incredibly charming just as it is. As for the items gracing the built-in shelves, we embraced a “Tim Gunn” philosophy: “MAKE IT WORK!” This involved a creative assortment of folded magazine cutouts that resemble colorful cards, various small trinkets like thimbles, tiny shells we’d collected from the beach, and even a miniature bottle. We tried every small item we had around until we found arrangements that looked just right. And for those curious about our miniature greenery, you can see how I craft small potted dollhouse plants here.

Navigating the Dollhouse: Foyer, Landing & Stairs
Here’s a wonderful shot that provides a comprehensive view of how the downstairs foyer and the upstairs landing have beautifully taken shape. We utilized some tiny clothespins, conveniently found in our trusty junk drawer (hooray for inexplicably saving all tiny and cute things!), to clip up more magazine clippings that we’ve transformed into miniature art. If your junk drawer isn’t as well-stocked as ours, rest assured you could easily find these adorable clothespins at any craft store. The charming plant nestled in its stand upstairs by the window is yet another incredible dollhouse gift for the kiddos from my wonderfully crafty friend Jessica. We all let out an excited squeal when we unwrapped that delightful surprise! These elements truly enhance the dollhouse interior design.

Regarding the stairs, we have grand plans to create some sort of fabric or painted runner to lead gracefully up them. It’s a wonderfully tiny and somewhat tight space, which does present a slight challenge for getting hands in there to access some of the more pinched areas. However, I have absolute confidence that our small-handed project manager, with her incredible determination and ingenuity, will undoubtedly figure out the perfect solution to make this vision a reality. Her problem-solving skills are just as sharp in miniature as they are in real life, making this dollhouse renovation a true collaborative effort.
The Creative Hub: Our Dollhouse Workshop
I couldn’t resist snapping this candid photo of our creative workspace, which often takes over a section of the kitchen counter. This is where we lay out miniature items, brainstorm ideas, and bring our visions to life. It’s truly amazing how everyday objects can be repurposed in the dollhouse world! Everything from a whimsical bike-shaped paperclip to those aforementioned tiny clothespins, and even simple twine paired with magazine clippings, came together to create little signs, unique art pieces, and even those charming wood-look cutting boards. The joy of free repurposing of everyday objects is an incredibly fun and satisfying aspect of dollhouse crafting. It teaches ingenuity and sustainability in the most delightful way, proving that stunning dollhouse decor doesn’t require expensive materials.

Upstairs Escapes: Bedrooms & Unique Touches
Let’s ascend to one of the charming upstairs bedrooms, a delightful space complete with a tiny potted plant, a miniature replica of our very own book (!!!), and a cute little geometric lamp. These exquisite details are all courtesy of – you guessed it – my incredibly crafty friend Jessica! Her thoughtful gifts sparked so many of our own creative ideas. For instance, we were inspired to use a small piece of scrap wood and glue a colorful magazine clipping onto it to create unique leaning art for the bedside table. We’re also keen to make a whole library of tiny books, just like the brilliant replica she made of ours – it’s simply a small block of wood with paper glue-sticked around three of its six sides, an ingenious miniature detail perfect for dollhouse decor.

Here’s a wider shot of that inviting room, which also features another adorable hanging plant, again a gift from Jessica. The vibrant flamingo art on the wall was another fun DIY project, crafted from more scrap wood and a cheerful magazine clipping. The bed itself underwent an easy yet impactful reupholstery transformation. It originally came with a pink cushion glued to a wood-toned frame. We carefully peeled off the cushion, painted the bed frame a crisp white, and then covered the pink cushion with a beautiful patterned fabric. We secured the fabric from behind with duct tape and then glued the entire reupholstered cushion back onto the bed with craft glue. Instant style upgrade for our dollhouse bedroom!

And do you notice those elegant gold frames on the left wall? These were originally dingy, old frames containing maroon and brown art that came with one of the dollhouses (they were actually glued to the walls of our other miniature home!). We carefully peeled them off, removed the outdated art, and then reframed some more tiny magazine clippings of things we found utterly charming. Small squares cropped from images of indigo-dyed pillows, for example, transformed into beautiful, tiny indigo-dyed art prints – a simple yet sophisticated touch for our miniature abode!
Across the hall on the middle level of the dollhouse, another bedroom awaits, complete with a charming miniature resident: a small plastic cat, a leftover treasure from one of our kids’ toys. We continued our theme of creating more wood art, leaning it gracefully on the mantel. And for a touch of whimsy, we even cut out that glowing eyeball wall sign we discovered in a magazine – our daughter absolutely adores how the tiny drawn “plug” makes it appear genuinely plugged in behind the miniature fireplace! It’s these imaginative details that bring our dollhouse rooms to life.

Speaking of that remarkable fireplace, does it look familiar to anyone? It’s an exquisite tiny replica that our wonderful UK friend, Lisa Harrold, thoughtfully sent us! It’s a perfect miniature version of our actual fireplace makeover from our last house, completed six years ago! I told you I have a knack for saving all things miniature! Isn’t that absolutely astounding? Our dollhouse now boasts a replica of a marble fireplace that we painstakingly installed in our previous home. How am I ever going to get over this incredible, sentimental detail?! It’s a true conversation starter and a testament to the power of thoughtful friendships and bespoke dollhouse decor.
We reupholstered this second bed with a similar ease, though the fabric base didn’t detach like the other one. No problem for clever DIY! We simply wrapped fresh fabric from our scrap pile directly around both sides of the bed and ingeniously used duct tape to secure it neatly around the bottom. SO EASY! This entire process took a mere ten seconds, proving once again the magic of miniature renovations. As for that adorable tiny letterboard proclaiming “GOOD VIBES” and the sweet little gold heart pillow – I can take absolutely no credit for these gems. They are, once again, the brilliant creations of my incredibly crafty friend Jessica! Perhaps if we all collectively beg her, she’ll consider opening a miniature dollhouse store, allowing us all to acquire her delightful tiny treasures, because she is unequivocally made for this!

Attic Adventures & Bathroom Bliss
Let’s journey up to the attic, a versatile space that now houses a collection of old secondhand furniture, all rescued and brought back to life with fresh coats of paint. The miniature fireplace in the attic received a stylish upgrade with shimmering rose gold paint – a color we frequently utilized in our first dollhouse makeover. A vital tip for working with this paint is to shake it vigorously before use, as it can be quite thin otherwise. The antique-style secretary desk was given a charming transformation with light blue craft paint, the very same inviting shade we used for the kitchen cabinets and appliances, creating a subtle flow throughout the dollhouse. The delicate wire chairs in this space are cherished items we originally bought for our daughter’s very first dollhouse when she was just two years old. They were actually miniature shelf decor items from West Elm, but anyone who knows my love for miniatures knows I save them forever!

And yes, I actually sewed those miniature pillows! No duct tape on these ones, just careful stitching, and I stuffed them with fluffy cotton balls – a truly tiny sewing project! We also crafted another super easy burlap swatch rug for this attic space, continuing the rustic-chic theme. I’m not usually one to brag, but have you noticed that this dollhouse boasts three fireplaces?! That’s what I call living the high life, even in miniature! The art piece displayed above the fireplace was another simple DIY: a magazine clipping glued to a slightly larger rectangle cut from a grocery store paper bag. The adorable potted plant on the mantel is ingeniously made from a wood bead topped with a faux sprig that I cut and glued into place. You can find more details on making faux dollhouse plants here, perfect for enhancing any miniature home.
We even tried our hand at making a tiny notebook, and it was a resounding success! The cover was a delightful clipping from a magazine, featuring an illustration of a small notebook cover that cleverly said “Projects,” which instantly sparked the idea. We then simply cut some white craft paper to create a stack of interior pages, folded them, stapled the seam to form a spine, and glued the magazine cover to the front. This miniature notebook might just be our daughter’s absolute favorite item in the entire house, precisely because we made it ourselves and it’s so perfectly small and cute. The little coke bottle, a charming vintage touch, also came with this dollhouse, nestled amongst a treasure trove of old furniture and miniature odds and ends.

Oh wait, I just realized I forgot to highlight another one of our daughter’s absolute favorite things in the house! Let’s quickly revisit the living room for a second. Do you spot that miniature pizza in a box, perched on the little pink table by the window? That’s actually an old, pizza-shaped eraser! It even came in its own tiny pizza box, and some genius had saved it with this very dollhouse! When we unearthed it from the dusty box of old furniture, our daughter was absolutely ecstatic. It’s so much fun paired with the little fake coke can. Clearly, the imaginary residents of this charming dollhouse have a delightful (and perhaps slightly concerning) soda addiction! This tiny detail brings immense joy to our miniature home.

Alright, back to the third floor, where you’ll discover this incredibly cute, old-fashioned bathroom on the right side of the space. I absolutely adore the vintage toilet tank complete with its pull chain, another fantastic detail that came with this dollhouse. It was originally all brown and quite scratched up, so our daughter took charge, using more of that elegant navy paint for the toilet, the seat, and the sink vanity. The result is simply stunning, creating an amazing contrast with the existing gold hardware and faucet. It was a stellar design move! I am absolutely “here for” this stylish miniature bathroom. We also made one more little burlap rug to place in front of the tub, keeping it simple and adding a cozy texture to the dollhouse bathroom decor.

Here’s a better shot that truly showcases the adorable toilet pull chain. Is that not the sweetest detail you’ve ever seen? You can also spot some more of our DIY art – a tiny clothespin paired with a magazine cutout. And yes, I meticulously sewed that sweet little stack of towels you see resting on the gold chair. It was essentially a few folded loops of scrap fabric from our stash, and I used some white thread threaded through the entire stack to “pin” them in place, ensuring the folded stack stays neatly together, adding a realistic touch to the dollhouse bathroom.

I also cut a small rectangle from the same fabric and cleverly looped it over the little gold hardware bar on the side of the sink, creating a perfect miniature hand towel. And seriously, how cute is that sink?! I absolutely “died” over the exquisite little ceramic top and all the delicate gold touches. To complete the look, we cut out a stylish gold mirror from a magazine and glued it onto the wall directly above the sink. While our long-term vision includes adding more genuine 3D elements – such as real miniature mirrors, functional working lights, and perhaps even some adorable sconces – for now, this creative start sets a beautiful foundation for our miniature home’s bathroom.

Oh, and did you notice the charming blue-green beads nestled in the tub in the photo above? These are actually these little round disks, typically used as vase filler or for decorative purposes. Our kids absolutely adore them in the miniature tubs, allowing their dollhouse figures to take “real” baths – minus the actual water, of course! Adding these thoughtful, interactive elements, like soft towels for hand drying and playful “water” for baths, truly enhances the fun and imaginative play within these delightful tiny homes. It’s all about bringing the miniature world to life through creative dollhouse accessories!
