The good news didn’t stop there; this “beast of a crack” was nothing a little paintable white caulk couldn’t effectively conquer. For any similar DIY crack repair projects, always ensure you choose a product explicitly labeled as “paintable” – it’s essential for achieving a cohesive, blended finish that truly disappears once painted. We often reach for Dap’s white paintable window & door caulk, a reliable choice for sealing gaps and cracks.
Caulk vs. Spackle: Choosing the Right Filler for Wall and Ceiling Cracks
When faced with the task of filling cracks, many homeowners ponder the choice between caulk and spackle. While both are excellent for various repairs, they serve different purposes. We opted for caulk in this instance based on expert advice. Spackle, while great for small holes and very fine cracks in stable surfaces, tends to shrink over time, particularly in larger or moving cracks, potentially causing it to “fall out” or re-crack. Caulk, on the other hand, especially an acrylic latex caulk with silicone, offers superior flexibility. This elasticity allows it to expand and contract with the natural movement of your house, making it a much more durable solution for cracks caused by settling. It resists shrinking and re-cracking, ensuring your repair lasts longer and looks better over time. Understanding this difference is key to successful and long-lasting DIY home improvements.

And so, our second crack-related adventure (you know we can’t resist a good pun!) seamlessly transitions into our next big project: a complete laundry room makeover! This “mundane” caulking detail was actually a crucial first step in preparing the space for its much-needed transformation. Get ready for some serious renovation excitement because we’ve decided it’s high time our tiny laundry room receives the attention it deserves. Woohoo! Cue the celebratory fireworks, strike up the drum line, and watch out for those friendly (not freaky or nightmarish at all, we promise!) fire-juggling clowns!
Our goal is to implement a series of thoughtful, one-project-at-a-time changes. We believe these small, incremental updates will collectively add up to a significant and refreshing difference in both the look and overall function of our petite 3.5′ x 8′ laundry space. We’re aiming to create a more efficient, aesthetically pleasing, and joyful area for tackling everyday chores.
The Laundry Room’s Humble Beginnings: Before & After
To truly appreciate the transformation, let’s take a look back at the laundry room when we first moved into our home. It was functional, but certainly lacking in personality and optimized storage, a typical utility space awaiting its full potential.
Since then, we’ve already made some foundational changes that have dramatically improved the space, setting the stage for this full-scale makeover. These initial updates include:
- Appliance Upgrade: We swapped out the old machines for new, energy-efficient front-loading appliances, which we snagged on an incredible sale! This not only boosts efficiency but also gives us valuable counter space on top.
- Window Treatment Removal: We took down the old window shutters, instantly allowing more natural light to flood the room and opening up the space.
- Privacy Solution for the Side Door: The side door, which looks directly into the kitchen, was previously a bit too revealing (especially for breastfeeding privacy!). We frosted the glass, providing much-needed discretion without sacrificing light.
- Shelf Removal: We removed the cluttered shelves behind the side door, opposite the washer/dryer, to create a blank canvas for more functional and aesthetically pleasing storage solutions.

Our Ambitious To-Do List: Transforming a Tiny Laundry Room
Now, with the initial groundwork laid, it’s time to dive into the exciting details. We’ve been envisioning some built-in storage next to the stacked washer and dryer, along with several other functional and visually appealing updates. Maximizing every inch of this small laundry room is paramount. Here’s our comprehensive to-do list for achieving the ultimate tiny laundry room makeover:
- Trim & Baseboard Refresh: We’ll be painting the rather odd brown quarter-round near the baseboards a fresh, glossy white, along with redoing all the dinged-up trim in a semi-gloss white. A crisp white trim instantly brightens a room and gives it a clean, updated feel, crucial for a small space.
- Wall Color Transformation: A fresh coat of paint will do wonders! We’re still finalizing our color choice for the walls, but we’ll share all the details later this week. A carefully selected paint color can make a small room feel larger and more inviting.
- Custom Built-in Shelving: Adding adjustable built-in shelving in that nook next to the stacked washer & dryer is a top priority. Given the room is only 3.5′ wide, we can’t unstack the appliances and place them on the long wall (that would leave a mere seven inches of space in front!). Custom shelving will allow us to maximize vertical storage for detergents, supplies, and other laundry essentials without sacrificing precious floor space.
- Hardware Upgrade: Replacing the hinges and knobs on the existing upper cabinetry is a small change with a big impact. New hardware can instantly modernize outdated cabinets and elevate the room’s aesthetic.
- New Light Fixture: The old light fixture (visible in the initial “before” pictures) is definitely past its prime. We’re on the hunt for a new, perhaps DIY, light fixture that will provide better illumination and contribute to the room’s style. Good lighting is essential in a functional utility space.
- Window Treatment Solution: Adding a window treatment, possibly a homemade one, will provide softness, privacy, and another layer of style to the room. It’s an opportunity to introduce texture or a subtle pattern.
- Functional Storage Near the Door: We need clever storage solutions near the door for everyday items like shoes, Burger’s leash, and other household necessities. This could involve slim shelves, hooks, or a small, wall-mounted organizer to keep the entry clear and functional.
- Art & Fuse Box Disguise: Hanging some cheerful art will not only add personality but also serve a dual purpose: obscuring the giant metal fuse box. Art can transform a purely functional space into one that feels considered and pleasant.
Beyond the Immediate: Long-Term Laundry Room Dreams
While our current focus is on these impactful, everyday function and storage additions, we do have a grander, long-term vision for this space. Down the road, we’d absolutely love to rip out the existing vinyl tile, hoping to uncover beautiful hardwood floors underneath. We’re crossing our fingers that these hardwoods extend into the kitchen as well! However, this is a much more involved project, as it would necessitate removing all of our kitchen cabinets, which currently rest on the vinyl tile and a layer of plywood, with the hardwoods potentially beneath that. Oh, the humanity (and the demo work)! So, for now, our energy is concentrated on making immediate, noticeable improvements that add both charm and efficiency. Game on!
