Basement Playroom Transformation with Shiplap and Behr Paint

We partnered with BEHR® for this project. All project ideas, statements and opinions are my own.

Transforming Our Basement Playroom: A Bright & Cheerful Shiplap Oasis

For years, the basement playroom in our home served its purpose – a designated area for the kids to unleash their energy. Yet, despite its utility, it always felt like a forgotten corner of the house. I craved a space that wasn’t just functional for the children but also inviting for adults, a place where the whole family could comfortably gather and create lasting memories. This desire sparked a mission to give the room a much-needed facelift, transforming it from a dingy, awkward basement space into a cozy, family-friendly retreat.

The Challenge: An Awkward Basement Playroom

My kids’ playroom, located in the lower level of our home, has always presented a unique design challenge. While I appreciated having a dedicated zone for them to play and burn off steam, I consistently found myself feeling uninspired by the space. It had an inherent “basement” feel – a little dark, somewhat cold, and lacking the warmth and personality found elsewhere in our home. I tried countless furniture arrangements, hoping to unlock its potential, but nothing ever truly clicked. The room simply felt awkward and uninviting, leading to me spending less time down there, which meant the kids often wanted me by their side, rather than engaging independently in their own space. It was clear that a deeper transformation was needed to make this room a comfortable and attractive spot for everyone.

The vision was simple: create a basement playroom that was bright, cheerful, and versatile enough to accommodate both rambunctious child’s play and relaxed adult supervision. I wanted it to be a room where I genuinely *wanted* to spend my time, and where the kids felt genuinely happy and inspired to play. This meant addressing the underlying issues of dullness and lack of character, and infusing the space with thoughtful design elements that spoke to both comfort and style.

Embracing Texture and Warmth: The Shiplap Solution

One of the most effective ways to introduce texture, warmth, and a touch of farmhouse charm into any space is through shiplap. I’ve previously incorporated faux shiplap planks made from plywood on our kitchen island, which provided a great aesthetic update. However, for this basement playroom makeover, I envisioned the authentic, rustic appeal of real wood planks. This time, I opted for beautiful knotty cedar tongue and groove planks, each measuring 6 inches tall, sourced from our local Home Depot. Cedar planks offer not just visual appeal but also a subtle natural fragrance and inherent durability, making them an excellent choice for a high-traffic area like a playroom.

Installing Real Wood Shiplap: A DIY Guide

The installation process for tongue and groove shiplap is surprisingly straightforward, making it an ideal DIY project for anyone looking to add character to their walls. Before starting, I ensured the wall was clean and ready for application. Proper preparation is key to a smooth and professional finish.

Step-by-Step Installation:

  1. First Row Foundation: I began at the very bottom of the wall. It’s absolutely crucial that your first board is perfectly level, as this will dictate the alignment of every subsequent row. Using a long level, I marked my starting line and positioned the first plank.
  2. The Spacer Trick: A clever tip for your first row is to use a spare plank laid flat on the floor as a spacer. This creates a small, consistent gap between the bottom of your first shiplap plank and the floor. This gap will be neatly covered by your baseboards later, ensuring a clean finish and allowing for slight floor imperfections.
  3. Secure with a Nail Gun: With the first board level and secured, I proceeded to attach rows upon rows of planks using a cordless nail gun. My tool of choice was the Ryobi Airstrike, which is incredibly convenient as it doesn’t require an air compressor, making it perfect for smaller DIY projects and easy maneuverability. I ensured each plank was snugly fitted into the tongue and groove of the previous one before nailing it securely into the wall studs.
  4. Consistent Application: I continued this process, checking for levelness every few rows to prevent any cumulative misalignment. The tongue and groove design makes it easy to create a tight, seamless look between planks, giving the appearance of true, rustic shiplap.

Painting the Planks: Choosing the Perfect Hue for a Playroom

Once all the shiplap planks were securely in place, the next crucial step was preparing them for paint. This involved filling any visible knots in the cedar and carefully patching all nail holes to ensure a smooth, flawless surface. Only then was it time to bring out the paint and truly bring our vision to life.

Why BEHR Premium Plus Interior Paint?

When it came to selecting the paint, I knew I wanted to use BEHR Premium Plus Interior paint. Its reputation for low odor and zero VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) made it the absolute perfect choice for a room frequented by small children. Prioritizing the health and safety of my family was paramount, and BEHR Premium Plus offered the peace of mind I sought, without compromising on quality or finish. Beyond safety, its excellent coverage and durability are ideal for a high-traffic area like a playroom, standing up to scuffs, spills, and the general wear and tear of active kids.

The Paint Color Conundrum: “In The Woods” vs. Ultra Pure White

The biggest debate, as often happens in home renovation projects, revolved around the paint color. Dark hunter green has been a significant trend in interior design lately, and I was absolutely thrilled by BEHR’s captivating shade, “In The Woods,” from their Colour Currents collection for 2017. It’s a rich, sophisticated hue that instantly adds depth and drama. I spent considerable time grappling with the decision – a dilemma I’m sure many fellow DIYers can relate to!

After much internal struggle and careful consideration (tell me I’m not the only person who overthinks paint colors!), I ultimately decided to save that gorgeous dark green for another project. The basement playroom, with its limited natural light, simply wasn’t the ideal canvas for such a deep color. While beautiful, a dark green wall might have absorbed too much light, potentially making the room feel smaller and still somewhat dingy, contradicting our goal of a bright and airy space. Instead, I began making plans for incorporating “In The Woods” as a stunning accent wall in our master bedroom, where abundant natural light would truly allow its richness to shine. It’s a testament to good design planning to know when a color is perfect, but not for every space.

To ensure the basement playroom would feel truly bright, expansive, and welcoming, I made the strategic choice to use BEHR Ultra Pure White, an Interior Semi-Gloss enamel paint – straight out of the can, no tinting required! This classic, crisp white is a timeless solution for brightening any interior, especially those with less natural light. The semi-gloss finish is also incredibly practical for a playroom, offering excellent durability and making it exceptionally easy to wipe clean, a must-have feature with active children around.

The subtle lines of the shiplap, enhanced by the brilliant white paint, work wonders in creating the illusion of a larger, more open room. Even though only one wall received this shiplap treatment, and thus isn’t an exact match to the existing side walls, the transition is seamless. Because the color change occurs at a natural break in the wall, the eye can’t perceive any difference, resulting in a cohesive and thoughtfully designed space.

The Final Reveal: A Bright & Cheerful Family Haven

With the shiplap installed and freshly painted, the basement playroom has been utterly transformed. What once felt awkward, dark, and uninviting is now a bright, airy, and cheerful oasis. This weekend makeover, comprising the strategic addition of shiplap and a coat of fresh, crisp white paint, has made an astounding difference in the entire space. It no longer feels like an afterthought but rather a meticulously designed extension of our home.

The new decor instantly radiates warmth and thoughtful effort, and the aesthetic impact is truly amazing. As soon as the space was cleared and ready, the kids couldn’t wait to dive into their teepee and gather around their picnic table, rediscovering the joy of imaginative play in their revitalized environment. And for me, the most rewarding part is that I now genuinely love being down there with them. The days of feeling obligated to supervise from a distance are over; now, I find myself happily joining in their adventures, reading a book on the comfortable rug, or simply enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.

Beyond its primary function as a play area, this beautifully updated basement also serves as the perfect backdrop for adorable Instagram pictures, capturing those precious family moments in a truly picture-perfect setting. It’s a testament to how a few strategic DIY projects can dramatically alter the feel and function of a room, turning a forgotten space into a cherished family hub.

If you’re contemplating a basement playroom renovation or looking for ways to brighten up a darker space, consider the transformative power of shiplap and a carefully chosen paint color. It’s a project that delivers immense satisfaction and creates a welcoming atmosphere for years to come.
