Cape Charles, VA: Your Guide to the Charming Beach Town

I know it might seem odd to publish a beach-focused travel guide after summer ends, but Sherry has been answering so many questions about Cape Charles that we decided to gather everything in one place. This post consolidates all the practical details and favorite spots we return to again and again. If we haven’t met: hi, I’m John Petersik and I tend to be thorough.

Where Is Cape Charles?

Cape Charles is located near the southern tip of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, right on the Chesapeake Bay. The Eastern Shore is a narrow peninsula separated from mainland Virginia by the bay. Historic Cape Charles is a roughly six-block square on the peninsula’s western side, which means you can watch the sun set over the water from the town beach—one of the many reasons we love it.

It’s about a 2.5-hour drive from Richmond, including a scenic crossing of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. From Washington D.C. it’s roughly four hours via a quieter route through Maryland. If you’re flying, Norfolk International Airport is approximately 45 minutes across the bridge-tunnel.

Historically under-the-radar, the town has seen steady revitalization over the last decade: historic homes restored, new restaurants and shops opening, and a renewed sense of community. Our two vacation homes are right in the heart of that historic area.

The Beach

The beach is the town’s biggest draw. It’s calm, family-friendly, and accessible. Because it’s on the Chesapeake Bay rather than the Atlantic, the water is shallow and usually very gentle—perfect for kids and anyone who prefers mellow swimming conditions.

At high tide you can walk dozens of yards and remain waist-deep in many spots; at low tide you can even set up your chair in the water. Families love it because kids can splash and play for hours without worrying about large waves or strong riptides. You’ll often spot kids hunting hermit crabs at low tide—an easy, memorable activity.

The bay also supports water sports: kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, jet skiing, boating, and kiteboarding on windy days. A few local rental companies provide equipment if you don’t bring your own.

Practical perks: parking along Bay Avenue is free and plentiful, even on many summer weekends, and public restrooms with showers are located near the big “LOVE” sign at Mason & Bay. On warm weekends you’ll often find a taco truck or Italian ice stand nearby.

Where To Stay

Cape Charles offers a range of lodging for different budgets and group sizes. Vacation rentals through HomeAway and Airbnb are popular for longer stays; many properties sit inside and outside the historic district, so confirm the location if you want easy walking access to the beach and downtown.

There are also charming bed & breakfasts like Bay Haven Inn, Cape Charles House, and Alyssa House. For shorter stays, consider the hotels in town: Hotel Cape Charles has a modern, loft-like aesthetic and offers guest amenities like bikes and golf carts, while the Northampton Hotel has a historic, Southern feel and waterside views.

For camping, Kiptopeke State Park and Cherrystone Campground provide campsites and cabins on the water. Staying in town makes it easy to walk to shops, restaurants, and the beach, so plan accordingly.

Where To Eat

Mason Avenue is the town’s main commercial strip, but the best meals aren’t limited to it. Our favorite local restaurant is Shanty, a casual seafood spot on the water with oysters, fresh fish, and family-friendly options. It’s popular for sunsets and summer live music—arrive early or add your name to the waitlist to avoid long waits.

Deadrise Pies (from the Shanty team) is a convenient, kid-friendly pizza and Italian option with great outdoor seating—perfect for takeout and eating on the beach at sunset. Cape Charles Brewing Company serves both food and craft beer with plenty of outdoor space and lawn games for kids.

Other choices include Kelly’s Gingernut Pub for casual family meals and several nearby restaurants for date-night dining. For breakfast, we like Cape Charles Coffee House, the Northampton Hotel cafe, and Rayfield’s soda fountain. Lunch options include Gourmet Alley and Tim’s Place. New bakeries and shops are opening often, so there’s usually something new to try.

Where To Treat Yourself

Dessert is a highlight here. Brown Dog Ice Cream is a standout—an artisan shop with creative rotating flavors and options for shakes, malts, floats, and sandwiches. Peach Beach Shave Ice Shack is a seasonal favorite for authentic Hawaiian-style shave ice, and CC Kool Eatz offers affordable soft-serve tucked in a residential corner of town. The new Cape Charles Candy Co. is a sweet addition downtown.

For adult beverages, the town now has a brewery, a distillery, and a cidery. Cape Charles Brewing Company offers food and beer outdoors, Buskey Cider on the Bay has board games and a lively patio, and Cape Charles Distillery focuses on spirits in a more refined setting. Nearby Chatham Vineyards offers wine tastings and unique experiences like guided kayak-to-winery tours.

Central Park anchors the historic district with a playground, open field, walking path, and summer gazebo concerts. For nature walks, the Cape Charles Natural Area Preserve offers a shaded boardwalk close to town, and the Southern Tip Hike & Bike Trail provides a longer paved route connecting to wildlife areas. Kiptopeke State Park and the Barrier Islands Center are also worth visiting for trails, wildlife, and family-friendly programming.

For day trips, Chincoteague Island—famous for wild ponies—is about an hour away and makes a wonderful excursion. Cape Charles also supports boating, crabbing, fishing, and golf, with a free fishing pier in town and two notable golf courses nearby.

When To Visit

Summer is the peak season for Cape Charles, but spring, fall, and the holiday season each have their charms. We’ve enjoyed beach days as early as April and as late as November. Off-season events—garden tours, Halloween gatherings, holiday parades, and small-town celebrations—make visits rewarding, though some businesses may reduce hours or close for part of the year, so it’s wise to call ahead.

New places open regularly, so there’s often something fresh to discover. If you visit, take time to wander, relax, and enjoy a sunset from the beach. And if you spot us while you’re in town, say hello and share any spots we missed—we’re always looking for new recommendations.
