Coastal Charms: Shopping Bethany Beach

Exploring Coastal Charms: A Memorial Day Weekend Journey to Lewes, Delaware

As the long-awaited Memorial Day weekend arrived, we embraced the opportunity to escape the everyday and journey to the serene shores near Bethany Beach, Delaware. This annual tradition of spending quality time with John’s family at their exquisite beach house is always a highlight, offering a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. This year, our explorations led us beyond the familiar sands to the charming town of Lewes, a place brimming with history, unique shops, and unexpected treasures. It was a reader’s thoughtful recommendation (thank you, Ann!) to visit The Old Screen Door in Lewes, just a pleasant 30-minute drive from Bethany, that truly set the course for our house-related escapades. We were eager to uncover the quaint allure of this town, proudly known as “the first town in the first state.”

Treasure Hunting at The Old Screen Door

Stepping into The Old Screen Door was like entering a carefully curated time capsule, an experience that resonated deeply with our love for unique home decor and vintage finds. While not overwhelmingly large, the shop perfectly balances an eclectic collection of truly fun old artifacts with a sprinkling of newer, complementary pieces, ensuring that every corner offers a fresh discovery. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, a testament to the character that only genuinely loved and thoughtfully displayed items can create. We found ourselves slowly meandering through the aisles, each item telling its own silent story, waiting to spark joy or a memory.

Our Quirky Tricycle Find

Among the myriad of intriguing items, one particular piece immediately captured Clara’s attention, and by extension, ours. Clara, with her boundless curiosity and discerning eye for the delightful, has an affinity for so many things in the world—from chirping “birdies” and splashing “duckies” to playful “doggies,” cuddly “kitties,” zooming “cars,” sturdy “blocks,” and of course, her beloved stuffed giraffe, affectionately named Gee. So, it was hardly a surprise when her gaze landed squarely on an antique-style metal tricycle. It wasn’t just any tricycle; its rustic charm and sturdy construction whispered tales of yesteryear, instantly drawing her in.

Clara, a young child, excitedly interacting with an old-fashioned metal tricycle inside The Old Screen Door shop.

As typical parents, susceptible to the infectious joy of our child and possessing a healthy appreciation for unique decor, our willpower quickly dissolved. We decided that this delightful tricycle, though not designed for actual riding, would make a perfect, whimsical addition to our home office. At $30, it was a worthwhile investment, not just for its aesthetic appeal but for the story it would carry. We have a tradition of acquiring one or two “house things” during our travels; these items become tangible memories of our vacations, imbuing them with a special significance that mass-produced items simply can’t match. This tricycle would forever remind us of our delightful day exploring Lewes and Clara’s captivating discovery.

Upon returning to Richmond, we were eager to capture its charm in our own setting. Here are a few closer shots we managed to snap:

Another view of the metal tricycle, showcasing its rustic patina and potential as a unique decorative piece in a home office.

While we haven’t pinpointed its permanent spot in the office just yet, we envision it looking absolutely delightful once we incorporate more storage solutions and cabinetry. Its vintage character will undoubtedly add a touch of whimsy to the space. Interestingly, no sooner had we secured our new purchase in the car than a simultaneous realization dawned on us. We exchanged glances, and without a word, both understood: this charming tricycle bore an uncanny resemblance to the iconic, somewhat eerie tricycle from the “Saw” movies. The immediate thought was a sudden wave of “heebie-jeebies,” but this quickly morphed into a shared laugh. This unexpected, slightly creepy association only endeared the tricycle to us more, adding another layer to its unique story. It’s these random quirks, these touches of playful oddity, that truly transform a house into a cherished home.

A Beautiful Chair, Unpurchased

Beyond our tricycle triumph, another item at The Old Screen Door completely captivated my attention: a tiny outdoor chair, its weathered gray color absolutely perfect. It possessed that sought-after patina that only time and the elements can bestow, making it a truly beautiful piece. Priced at $65, it wasn’t an exorbitant sum, but in our ongoing quest for value and mindful spending, we decided to appreciate its beauty and leave it for the next lucky visitor to discover and enjoy. Sometimes, the joy of window shopping and admiring beautiful craftsmanship is just as fulfilling as making a purchase, especially when you envision it bringing happiness to another family.

Exploring Downtown Lewes: A Coastal Gem

After our delightful visit to The Old Screen Door, we drove into the heart of downtown Lewes, a truly picturesque area that embodies coastal charm. The streets here are beautifully tree-lined, creating a canopy of green that adds to the town’s inviting ambiance. Every block is dotted with an array of independent shops, charming boutiques, and delightful eateries. We passed by intriguing spots like the “Cake Bar,” hinting at delicious treats, and felt the vibrant pulse of a community that prides itself on its unique local businesses. Lewes offers an experience that caters to all ages, making it an ideal destination for family outings.

Kids Ketch: A World of Imagination

Our next stop, Kids Ketch, was an absolute haven for Clara. This toy store, packed to the brim with imaginative and engaging items, proved to be an instant hit. Clara had a ball, her eyes wide with wonder as she explored every nook and cranny. One particular display caught her eye: a whimsical collection of fabric monsters, playfully hung from a clothesline stretched across the entryway. It was a creative and inviting sight that perfectly set the tone for the fun within.

Among the many fascinating characters, Clara developed a special fondness for a small green doll named Groody. What truly elevated Groody from just another toy to a source of much laughter was his hilariously relatable tag. If you couldn’t quite decipher the tiny print, it read: “Groody is a pretty relaxed, easy going, energetic, stressed out, moody broody mess! Aaaaaahhhhh! Did I just close that door? It was a ghost! Did I send that e-mail to the wrong person!!??? You get the picture. If you are willing to help him on his quest for inner peace he will help you on your quest for whatever dealio you got going. His first though…” This description struck a chord, perfectly capturing the chaotic yet endearing inner monologue many of us experience daily. Groody, the embodiment of modern anxiety wrapped in a cute package, was simply brilliant.

The toy store also offered a delightful trip down memory lane for us. Who remembers snap bracelets? I certainly do, and I have fond, albeit slightly embarrassing, memories of repurposing one as a scrunchy during my grade school days – a true fashion statement of the era! Kids Ketch had a modern twist on this classic: snap bracelet watches. These nostalgic items immediately transported me back to a simpler time, eliciting a knowing smile as I recalled youthful trends and fashion daring. It’s these little touches of shared cultural history that make wandering through unique shops so enjoyable.

Ultimately, we departed Kids Ketch without Groody or a snap bracelet watch. Sometimes, the sheer pleasure of window shopping and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere is enough, particularly when complemented by a scoop of delicious ice cream enjoyed during a leisurely stroll through town. Speaking of charming window displays, I spotted an absolutely adorable pig planter through the glass of a local flower shop. Its whimsical design and rustic appeal instantly made it my idea of a perfect decorative accent – a simple, joyful find that brightened the day.

The Lewes Antique Mall: A Haven for Collectors

One of the most thrilling discoveries of our day was stumbling upon a discreet alleyway simply marked “Antique Mall.” The unassuming entrance hinted at hidden treasures within, and we eagerly stepped through, unsure of what wonders awaited us.

Inside, the Antique Mall unfolded into a sprawling labyrinth of individual vendor booths, each meticulously filled with some of the most amazing collections of cool, vintage, and eclectic items I’ve encountered in a long time. It was a true feast for the eyes, offering endless inspiration for unique home decor and creative styling. Our gaze lingered on magnificent, oversized mercury glass finial-like accents, their reflective surfaces catching the light beautifully. Nearby, a fun antique bronze porthole mirror offered a nautical touch, imagining it gracing a beach house wall or a cozy study. Every corner held a potential conversation starter, a piece of history waiting to be re-homed.

Memorable Finds and Cherished Regrets

Among the countless interesting items, a stunning wooden horse figure stood out, capturing my imagination completely. Its craftsmanship and stately presence were truly captivating, making it an “insane to the membrane” find for me personally. Priced at a firm $250, it was an investment we weren’t prepared to make that day. I found myself drawn to it, giving it a heartfelt hug before reluctantly moving on, not without whispering my admiration first. Such encounters are a delightful part of antique shopping; some items simply resonate with you, even if they don’t come home.

Another piece that deeply resonated was an extraordinary print, a true work of art depicting something evocative of “Kalamari.” Its colors, composition, and subject matter were simply mesmerizing. At over $200, it too was beyond our immediate budget, but it left such a lasting impression that I still find myself daydreaming about it for at least twenty minutes each day. These are the items that stick with you, becoming part of your personal aesthetic inspiration, even if they don’t physically adorn your walls.

Then there was this truly “amazeballs” tin whale. It’s hard to convey its full charm through a static image alone. What made it so special was its interactive nature: you could gently rock the whale back and forth, causing its mouth to open and close in a playful motion, and its eye would move from left to right, adding a delightful, animated quality. It was a testament to whimsical design and playful engineering, undeniably cooler than any snap bracelet scrunchy I ever owned!

We also admired a set of beautifully nested baskets, their craftsmanship evident in how tightly and perfectly they fit together. The complete set was quite expensive, reflecting their quality, but they were also available for individual purchase, offering flexibility for those looking for just one or two pieces to enhance their home organization or decor.

So, after much deliberation and appreciation for countless unique items, what did we ultimately bring home from this treasure trove? Just as we were about to conclude our visit, a small stand of iron birds and sea turtles caught our eye. Priced at an affordable $6 each, these miniature sculptures were simply irresistible. I have a particular fondness for sea turtles, a sentiment deepened by various personal experiences and connections over the years. This little iron sea turtle, with its intricate details and charming presence, was the perfect small souvenir to commemorate our day. It’s these small, meaningful acquisitions that truly encapsulate the spirit of our travels.

Our total expenditure for the day amounted to a modest $40, encompassing our vintage metal tricycle, the adorable iron sea turtle, and some delightful ice cream enjoyed during our stroll through Lewes. It was a day well spent, rich in discovery, laughter, and new memories.

Architectural Gems of Lewes

Beyond the shops and antique finds, the residential areas of Lewes offered their own visual delights. The town’s architecture is a captivating blend of historic charm and coastal elegance, making every street a pleasant journey of discovery. We admired a variety of houses, each possessing its own distinct character and unique curb appeal. We spotted one particularly memorable home proudly guarded by not one, but two impressive giant concrete dogs out front. Their stoic presence added a touch of whimsical grandeur to the property. While driving, I managed to capture a glimpse of one of these loyal guardians.

Another charming residence that caught our eye was an inviting little beach palace, radiating classic coastal elegance. Its crisp white trim stood out beautifully against the siding, and a classic picket fence perfectly framed the property, creating an idyllic, welcoming scene that truly embodies the relaxed luxury of beachside living.

And then there was the house that truly embraced unique architectural detailing: a residence complete with dramatic gargoyles meticulously guarding the lush hydrangeas in its garden. This unexpected fusion of historical, almost gothic elements with vibrant garden flora created a striking and memorable visual, demonstrating the diverse and imaginative home styles found throughout Lewes.

Family Moments by the Sea

Of course, no Memorial Day weekend at the beach would be complete without ample family time and delightful beach hijinks. These moments are the true essence of our trips – building sandcastles, splashing in the waves, and simply enjoying each other’s company under the warm sun. For all you wonderful Clara-loving folks out there (hello, Mom!), here’s a little slice of her joyful beach adventures:

A Literary Companion for Road Trips

During our road trip, while John expertly navigated the roads (our designated driver), I took on the crucial role of entertainment director. Clara and Burger, our furry companion, efficiently handled their duties of sleeping soundly in the back. My chosen read-aloud for the journey was Tina Fey’s “Bossypants,” and I can enthusiastically report that it was an absolute hit with both of us. Its sharp wit, insightful observations, and laugh-out-loud humor made the miles melt away. If Oprah’s Book Club ever needed a fill-in, I’d step right up to recommend this gem without hesitation. It’s the perfect book for anyone looking for intelligent humor and a dose of real-world wisdom.
