Embracing Simplicity: Our Journey into a Smaller, Brighter Florida Home
It feels surreal to reflect on our first month in this new house. We officially moved in on the 14th of last month, and this upcoming Sunday marks another 14th! Time truly flies when you’re embarking on such a significant life change. The packing pod, which once seemed impossibly full, is now completely unpacked and has been picked up. If you’re curious about the humorous saga of what we *overpacked* and subsequently donated upon arrival, you can tune into this podcast episode for all the details. It still boggles my mind how a single pod could contain too much, but then again, John proved to be an expert packer – perhaps *too* good. Transitioning from a sprawling 14-room house to a cozier 6-room abode, and downsizing from 3150 square feet to a more manageable 1400, was undoubtedly a monumental undertaking. I won’t sugarcoat it; this entire process spanned several intense months. Yet, I can unequivocally say, it was SO incredibly worth every effort.
In essence, we genuinely don’t miss any of the possessions we’ve shed. Instead, we’re enveloped in a profound sense of lightness and absolute contentment. This lifestyle shift comes with my highest recommendation, earning a perfect ten stars. For anyone contemplating a major downsizing project, my paramount advice is this: ruthlessly declutter even more than you initially believe you need to. You’ll discover that what you let go of in the beginning is never truly missed in the end. This minimalist approach has transformed our daily lives, allowing us to focus on experiences and connections rather than material possessions.

We delved deeper into the unexpected facets of moving into a smaller home in that same podcast episode. It provides a comprehensive overview of the practical mechanics of our move, how we gradually settled in, and the delightful surprises we encountered along the way. From navigating the logistics of unpacking to adapting to new routines, the transition has been a learning curve filled with valuable insights. The shift in perspective from maximizing space to optimizing it for joyful living has been one of the most rewarding aspects.
The Heart of the Home: Our Multi-functional Kitchen & Dining Area
But enough about the logistics; let’s dive into the visually engaging part: a collection of photographs showcasing our kitchen, dining room, and an unexpected little seating area as they currently stand. This expansive area functions as one large, multi-functional common space situated right in the heart of our main floor. Our new home is essentially a ranch-style house, with all the bedrooms and the primary bathroom conveniently located on the first floor. Upstairs, we have a versatile bonus flex space that we’ve designated as a family room and office. This setup is quite similar to how many ranch homes might utilize a large basement area for flexible living, only ours offers the added benefit of being upstairs, bathed in natural light and offering a distinct separation from the main living zones.

What you see here is a true reflection of our commitment to utilizing what we already own. Every piece of furniture and decor in these photos was carefully transported in our packing pod – with the exception of two additional kitchen chairs that we ordered to complete the set. This documentation process is something we genuinely enjoy. It’s fascinating to observe how spaces organically evolve and adapt over time. Furthermore, it serves as an intriguing case study in home design: some areas seamlessly fall into place and function perfectly for years, while others require extensive thought and experimentation to truly get right. This current setup feels like one of those immediate successes, where everything just clicks.
A Glimpse into the Past: Kitchen Before & After
For a bit of perspective and fun, here’s a snapshot of the kitchen as it appeared when we first purchased the house. You can delve into the significant renovations we undertook, such as removing the intrusive peninsula and the bulky soffits, by reading more here. Additionally, we chronicled the transformation of the pine floors, refinishing them to achieve a much lighter, less orange hue, which you can explore here.

These initial changes alone delivered a monumental improvement, fundamentally altering the feel of the space. Complementing these structural updates, we painted the entire room in a crisp, bright white – specifically Pure White by Sherwin Williams, with an eggshell finish on the walls, semi-gloss on the trim and doors, and a flat finish on the ceiling. Our “before” pictures are admittedly quite bleak because it was incredibly dark and rainy the day we made our offer on the house. We initially assumed we were buying a smaller home that would inherently require a substantial amount of artificial lighting, accepting this as a trade-off for living in such a fantastic, walkable neighborhood near the beach. Imagine our astonishment when we finally moved in and exclaimed, “HOLY CRAP, THIS IS THE BRIGHTEST HOUSE WE HAVE EVER OWNED!” If you’re intrigued by our peculiar, accidental tradition of buying houses during rainstorms, you can read more about it here.
To truly convey the essence and functionality of this space, we’ve created a video that will address numerous questions you might have. From inquiries like “What’s behind that door near the stove?” to “Will you lose that side kitchen window if you add an en-suite bathroom to your bedroom’s side porch area?” or “How do you feel about having the downstairs common area situated between your bedroom and the kids’ bedrooms?” and even the practical “You don’t have a pantry here – where do you store all the food?”. This comprehensive video covers it all. Many of these points can be visually understood even without sound; just observe as I open doors and peek inside!

They say a video is worth ten thousand words, which makes me wonder why we even bother with these static pictures! Nevertheless, they provide a delightful visual diary for looking back on our home’s evolution. Someday, we’ll undoubtedly recall moments like, “Remember when we lived with a gaping hole in the wall above the stove, awaiting a vent hood, and after just a week, our eyes completely stopped registering it?” It’s true; I often forget about that, and the conspicuous black dishwasher front, until I see these photographs and am reminded of the ongoing room for improvement. But for now, here’s John by the table, providing a sense of scale. We have absolutely adored having a casual dining table here instead of a traditional island.

Because these chairs are standard dining height rather than counter height, we find ourselves utilizing this table for a wide array of activities that we rarely did at our previous house’s kitchen island. We write letters, sort paperwork, type on our laptops, and engage in countless other tasks here. In fact, I’m composing this very article from that table right now! This setup fosters a sense of versatility and encourages more intimate interactions within the kitchen space.
Another significant advantage of opting against an island is the simple yet profound joy of looking into each other’s eyes while we eat. It’s a stark contrast to sitting in a linear fashion, all staring in the same direction. We cherished our dining table meals in the beach house kitchen (and used the island there far less frequently), which served as a valuable prior experience to inform this design choice. True to our expectations, we absolutely adore this current setup and its ability to bring us closer during meal times.
We extensively debated various alternative ideas for this space, including adding a peninsula, incorporating a smaller island, building a custom banquette, or installing bench seating along the wall. However, for the foreseeable future, this current arrangement stands out as our absolute favorite. Its casual elegance, remarkable flexibility, and effortless integration into our daily lives make it the perfect solution for this multi-functional area.

Furthermore, we have two additional, identical chairs stored upstairs in our office/art desk area. These can be easily brought down to comfortably seat six people in a pinch (the video offers a more detailed explanation of how we manage this). Beyond this, our upstairs deck provides seating for eight, and we anticipate setting up yet another outdoor dining spot on our covered front side porch. This means entertaining options are plentiful, ready for when we can safely gather with larger groups again someday.
Behold, a closer look at the stove’s vent hole, complete with its dangling hookup wires. These imperfections are truly memories in the making. The most amusing aspect of this stove is that, despite its appearance, it functions flawlessly. We half-expected to encounter a myriad of issues with the mismatched, older appliances, especially considering the house sat empty for over four years, enduring significant water damage and a complete lack of heating or cooling during that period. Yet, remarkably, all the appliances continue to operate with surprising robustness.

This image essentially encapsulates our entire counter and cabinet area. It presents a vastly different scenario from the kitchen in our previous house, which boasted an almost absurd number of cabinets – I’m only slightly exaggerating when I say around 739! But here’s the wonderful realization: everything we truly need fits perfectly. Anything superfluous simply doesn’t, reinforcing our commitment to mindful living. It’s a surprisingly liberating trade-off, isn’t it? We’re also planning to install some open shelving along the back wall, above the sink, which will create even more accessible storage space. We hope to tackle that project very soon!

On a somewhat surprising note, I feel compelled to declare that I’m genuinely not hating the pink laminate countertop. In fact, I’m strongly considering making it work for our Phase 1 update of the kitchen. Our immediate plans involve painting the cabinets, upgrading to hidden hinges, installing some new hardware, and of course, adding those much-anticipated shelves along the back wall. We might even update the front panel of the dishwasher to a crisp white, matching our other appliances and blending more seamlessly. My main challenge for now is figuring out how to repair the missing pink corner of the counter; perhaps some wood putty or Bondo, meticulously painted to match, will do the trick.

For those who haven’t yet seen the video, the concise answer to the question “Will you lose the window in the photo above if you add a bathroom to the covered porch out there?” is this: while that particular window doesn’t provide an abundance of light, as it’s fully sheltered under a covered porch, we’ve come to truly appreciate the view it offers after living here for a while. Our current thinking is to design a slightly smaller bathroom addition, allowing us to preserve at least half of the window and, consequently, half of that cherished view. One profound lesson we’ve already gleaned from this move is that bigger isn’t always better. A more compact bathroom will serve us perfectly well. In fact, we’ve all been sharing just one bathroom, and it has been entirely manageable – far less of an issue or adjustment than we had initially anticipated! You can hear more about this, along with our comprehensive future bathroom plans, by listening here.
Clever Storage Solutions: The “Pantry” & Bookshelves
And now, a warm welcome to our “pantry”! Yes, you read that right. I urge you to watch the video to witness it in action, as I know many of you are thinking: “Those drawers are far too shallow to store anything substantial!” But prepare to be surprised – we successfully store large bags of chips, various cereals, and a multitude of other essentials within them! It functions just as effectively as the drawer pantry system we had in our beach house kitchen. Oh, and do you recall where these two substantial bookshelf cabinet units resided in our last house? Living in our new home has become a delightful game of “what-was-where-in-the-Richmond-house.” For the answer, you can find a post detailing it; simply scroll down and examine the photos here. And for a comprehensive look at pretty much everything and its former location in our previous home, another dedicated post awaits.

I find myself frequently saying, “If you watched the video, you saw…” because it truly provides an unparalleled understanding of the space that still photographs simply cannot capture. However, I want to emphasize that this room is far more spacious than it often appears, especially when compared to the “before” pictures. Approximately one-third of this expansive area is dedicated to cabinets, countertops, and the refrigerator. The remaining two-thirds graciously accommodate our dining table, these two large and incredibly functional bookcase/storage cabinets, and the charming little sitting area, complete with a convenient landing zone dresser full of storage positioned strategically by the door. This thoughtful layout ensures that every zone serves a clear purpose while contributing to an overall sense of openness and flow.

Here’s a “before” shot from this exact angle, just for a touch of nostalgic comparison and amusement.

One of the most impactful structural changes we made was closing off the larger doorway visible in the photo below. This strategic modification significantly increased our usable wall space, benefiting both the kitchen/dining/sitting room and our main bedroom. In fact, this is the very wall against which our bed now comfortably rests. You can truly appreciate our glorious view from bed by visiting that particular post.

Having that additional wall space has been incredibly advantageous, allowing us to incorporate a second bookshelf/cabinet unit here. We particularly appreciate its utility for storing dishes, plates, and bowls, keeping them easily accessible yet neatly organized. On a delightful side note: plants absolutely thrive in Florida. I’m truly discovering this to be a legitimate, wondrous phenomenon. Our dog, Burger, has never been happier, and neither have my beloved houseplants!

Unexpected Delights: The Cozy Sitting Nook
You’ll get a far better sense of this charming sitting area (say it with me!) IN THE VIDEO, but this photo represents my attempt to convey its appeal in a static image, which is always more challenging. I initially placed these two chairs, with a small leather pouf nestled between them, fully anticipating that no one would actually use them. My internal monologue was already formulating the argument: “Well, the main family room with the big sofa and TV is upstairs, so why would I need a second little sitting room down here?!” Yet, to my utter surprise and delight, EVERYONE gravitates to this spot and uses it constantly.

I am so incredibly glad I decided to experiment with this setup, because it turns out that a dedicated little sitting area is absolutely perfect for the kids to engage with their sticker books while we’re busy cooking nearby. Or, in a rather peculiar phenomenon, they love to hang out upside down in these chairs while chatting with us or each other – it’s a genuine marvel that I’ve heard other parents comment on! This little zone receives an incredible amount of use throughout the day. I’ve actually heard from a few people who have similar arrangements – two chairs at one end of their kitchen – for enjoying coffee with a newspaper or engaging in casual conversations with a friend who might drop by. I can wholeheartedly vouch for this concept; it truly adds a wonderful, inviting dimension to the home.

John and I frequently sit in them ourselves if one of us is working in the kitchen, simply to chat or keep company. Since that might be difficult to visualize, here’s a picture of John engrossed in TikTok, providing a useful sense of adult scale within that area. I believe the video he was watching featured a cat pretending to be a snake. Rest assured, John is far more entertained than his expression suggests!

Entryway & Essential Storage: The Hardworking Laundry Closet
Upon entering our front door (which is visible in the photo directly above), you’ll find a generously sized laundry closet to your left. We thoughtfully created this space where a rather peculiar, smaller double-sided closet once stood, which bizarrely led into our daughter’s room. You can discover more about this intriguing transformation here.
Within this new laundry closet, we installed practical floating shelves and a substantial countertop, perfect for both storage and folding laundry. This closet truly *works hard* for us, maximizing every inch of its footprint. We plan to dedicate a future post to detailing how we constructed these game-changing shelves, as they have fundamentally altered the amount of storage we can achieve in this compact area. There’s certainly a wealth of information to share about how we manage to contain all our belongings in a house with a mere three closets! Rest assured, we’ll cover every organizational tip and trick we’ve learned.

And from this candid picture of John posing with his phone, you can clearly appreciate the generous open space between our cozy sitting area and the dresser positioned by the door. This clearance is incredibly vital for both storage efficiency and overall home functionality. It serves as a primary walkway for us, offering ample room to pass through comfortably. Crucially, there’s also plenty of space to stand directly in front of the dresser and access its contents – a task we find ourselves doing approximately 32 times a day!

This versatile dresser houses everything from sunscreen and Burger’s leash to doggy bags and various other small essentials that are convenient to grab on our way out the door. Interestingly, it’s actually our old bedroom dresser, which we repurposed and gave a fresh look by swapping out the hardware for these simple, elegant pulls. We’ve developed a true fondness for all the brass accents throughout this house. It complements the overall aesthetic beautifully, from our cherished hinges and doorknobs (Exhibit B) to my absolute favorite gold frames (Exhibit C). These small details collectively elevate the home’s character and warmth.

Oh, and do you notice that woven “side table” in the photograph above? It’s a prime example of our “working with what you have” philosophy. It’s simply a basket I already owned, topped with a lazy Susan I also had on hand, ingeniously balanced in place. To secure it, I actually threaded three bottles of nail polish through the basket holes around the top edge to provide stable support! This room truly exemplifies making the most of existing items. The second “side table” on the opposite side of the sitting area is another basket we already possessed, adorned with a simple Ikea tray resting on top to create a functional tabletop. These creative solutions not only save money but also add a unique, personal touch to our decor, proving that necessity truly is the mother of invention.

Adapting and Evolving: Future Plans & Lessons Learned
So yes, this room is undeniably far from “finished,” but the way everything has settled and is functioning is surprisingly effective and deeply satisfying. And perhaps best of all, our older appliances are also continuing to perform remarkably well – absolutely no complaints from us! Although, I do have a humorous confession: I had two of those Ikea baskets that would have made perfectly matching basket “tabletops” for this area, but I downsized one right before we moved. Ha! So, you can file that under the single item I actually found myself missing after I decided to part with it. It’s a small anecdote that reminds us that even with the best intentions, some things unexpectedly resonate.
The journey of transforming this house continues, driven by practical needs and a desire for comfortable, functional beauty. Our approach remains centered on thoughtful design, resourcefulness, and a willingness to adapt as we truly get to know our space. This new Florida home, with all its quirks and charms, is slowly but surely becoming a cherished sanctuary, perfectly tailored to our downsized, lighter way of living.
