Since painter’s tape isn’t as robust as a vinyl stencil, we kept a close eye on our jar. After about 90 seconds, we noticed the edges of the tape beginning to soften slightly, indicating that the etching cream was slowly working its way through. While a longer wait typically results in a deeper, more pronounced etch, it also increases the risk of the cream seeping under your stencil if it starts to degrade. For a painter’s tape stencil, 1 to 2 minutes is generally a safe and effective timeframe to achieve a noticeable etch without compromising the stencil’s integrity. Trust your observation and remove the cream when you feel the etch is sufficient.

Step 7: Rinse Off Cream & Carefully Remove Stencil

Once you’ve allowed the etching cream sufficient time to work its magic (approximately 1.5 minutes for our project), it’s time to reveal your design. Carefully take your jar to a sink and rinse off all the etching cream under running water. Be thorough, ensuring no residue remains. Once rinsed, gently peel away your painter’s tape stencil. Exercise caution during this step to avoid scratching your freshly etched surface or leaving behind any sticky residue. We encountered a tiny bit of bleeding between the “k” and “s” – a common minor imperfection in DIY etching – but overall, the result was a beautifully frosted and personalized “Thanks Jar” ready for its purpose.

Step 8: Begin Filling Your Jar with Daily Gratitude!

By the 30th, we aim to have accumulated at least sixty unique expressions of thankfulness (two per day if both adults participate).
