Updated 2019
As the leaves turn golden and the air grows crisp, the spirit of Thanksgiving gently reminds us to pause and reflect on the blessings in our lives. This holiday season, why not transform that feeling of gratitude into a beautiful, tangible family tradition? Inspired by Sherry’s daily gratitude journal habit, we’ve developed a heartwarming craft project that brings thankfulness front and center: the DIY Etched “Thanks Jar.” Instead of keeping our appreciation tucked away in our thoughts or journal pages, this project allows us to display our collective gratitude throughout November, potentially sparking even more moments of thankfulness for everyone involved.

Create Your Own DIY Etched “Thanks Jar”: A Heartfelt Thanksgiving Tradition
Thanksgiving is a time for family, food, and most importantly, gratitude. While many families have traditions around the Thanksgiving meal, few actively incorporate a daily practice of acknowledging what they are thankful for. Our “Thanks Jar” craft offers a creative and engaging way for every family member to contribute to a shared reservoir of appreciation, making the spirit of Thanksgiving last all month long. This isn’t just a craft; it’s an opportunity to foster mindfulness, strengthen family bonds, and create a cherished keepsake that can be revisited year after year. The simple act of writing down one thing you’re grateful for each day can profoundly shift perspective, and seeing those notes accumulate in a beautifully etched jar serves as a powerful visual reminder of life’s many joys.
Essential Craft Supplies To Craft Your Custom “Thanks Jar”
The journey to creating your unique “Thanks Jar” begins with gathering a few simple supplies. We stumbled upon our perfect apothecary jar at a thrift store for a mere 99 cents, proving that unique finds can often spark the best project ideas. However, the beauty of this craft is its flexibility; any glass vessel you have on hand can be transformed. A classic mason jar, an elegant flower vase, or even a sturdy drinking glass can serve as the foundation for your gratitude display. The key is to find a glass surface suitable for etching, allowing your chosen design to truly shine. Here’s a detailed list of what you’ll need:
- Small to Medium Glass Jar or Vessel: As mentioned, thrift stores are a treasure trove for unique and affordable options, but any clean, smooth glass item will work beautifully.
- Glass Etching Cream: This specialized cream is the magic ingredient for permanently frosting glass. Brands like Armour Etch are popular and readily available at craft stores. Always handle with care and follow manufacturer safety guidelines.
- Small Paintbrush: A fine-tipped brush is ideal for applying the etching cream precisely within your stencil, ensuring crisp, clean lines for your design.
- Craft Knife (e.g., X-Acto knife): Essential for cutting intricate designs from your stencil material. Safety first – always use on a protected surface and supervise children if they are involved.
- Printer and Printer Paper: For designing and printing your custom stencil. A basic home printer is all you need.
- Painter’s Tape (Medium to Wide): This versatile tape is crucial for transferring your stencil design and protecting areas of the glass you don’t want to etch. Opt for good quality tape that adheres well but removes cleanly.
- Colorful Cardstock or Scrapbooking Paper: Cut into small, uniform pieces, these will be the slips of paper for writing down your daily gratitude notes. Choose fall-themed colors or any palette that brings you joy.
- Cutting Mat: (Optional but highly recommended) To protect your work surface when using the craft knife.
- Gloves: (Optional but recommended) For handling etching cream, to protect your skin.

While the etching process adds a sophisticated, custom touch to your “Thanks Jar,” it’s certainly possible to create a beautiful gratitude vessel without it. You could use permanent markers designed for glass, adhesive vinyl decals, or even decorative paints. However, we’ve been eager to experiment with glass etching ever since seeing inspiring projects, like this one on How About Orange. The etched finish provides a subtle, elegant frosted look that feels truly special and enduring.
Step 1: Design and Print Your Personalized Stencil
The first step in personalizing your “Thanks Jar” is to create your stencil. For our jar, we opted for the simple yet powerful word “THANKS” etched onto the base. The beauty of this step is that you have complete creative freedom. You can choose any word, phrase, or simple icon that resonates with you and your family’s Thanksgiving spirit. Think “GRATITUDE,” “THANKFUL,” a small leaf, or even a family initial. Use any word processing software or even a simple design program on your computer to type out your chosen word. Select a clean, blocky font, such as Helvetica or Arial, as these are generally easier to cut and create a crisp etch. Experiment with sizing to ensure it fits perfectly on your chosen glass vessel. Remember, simpler designs work best for beginners, as intricate details can be challenging to cut accurately with a craft knife.
Step 2: Prepare Your Painter’s Tape Stencil Base
Achieving a precise and secure stencil is critical for a professional-looking etched finish. Since paper is too flimsy to adhere tightly to glass and withstand the etching cream, we’ll transfer our design onto painter’s tape. Begin by laying several strips of painter’s tape side-by-side on a cutting mat or protected work surface, overlapping slightly to create a solid, thick section. This will form the base of your stencil. Once you have a sufficient area of tape, carefully secure your printed paper design over it using small pieces of regular Scotch tape. This ensures your design stays perfectly still while you cut, preventing any accidental shifts that could ruin your stencil.

Step 3: Precisely Cut Out Your Stencil Design
With your design securely taped down, it’s time for the most delicate part of the process: cutting. Using a sharp craft knife, meticulously cut along the outlines of your chosen letters or design. The goal is to cut through both the paper and the painter’s tape underneath. Apply steady, even pressure, making sure your cuts are deep enough to penetrate the tape without damaging your cutting surface. For internal sections of letters, like the hole in an “A” or “O,” you’ll want to carefully remove these inner pieces. We found that being overly meticulous about saving these tiny “a-holes” wasn’t necessary for the overall effect, and a little humor can make the process more enjoyable! Take your time, focus on smooth lines, and remember that practice makes perfect. Any small imperfections will likely add to the charm of your handmade item.

Step 4: Affix Your Tape Stencil Securely to Your Glass Jar
Once all your letters are precisely cut, carefully remove the paper print-out guide, leaving only the cut painter’s tape design on your cutting mat. Now, with utmost care, slowly peel the painter’s tape stencil from the cutting board. It’s crucial to prevent the tape from ripping or sticking to itself, which can distort your design. Gentle, consistent pressure is key here. Once the stencil is safely detached, position it onto your glass jar exactly where you want your etched design to appear. Smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles, ensuring the tape adheres tightly and evenly to the glass. For added security, especially on curved surfaces, consider adding small strips of painter’s tape around the edges of your stencil to create a protective border. This will prevent any etching cream from accidentally seeping underneath or outside your design area, ensuring a clean and professional finish.

A minor wobble in one of our letters added a touch of handmade charm, but overall, we were impressed by the adherence of our makeshift stencil. With the edges reinforced with extra strips of tape, our jar was perfectly prepped for the etching cream, eliminating any worry about accidental etching in unwanted areas.

Step 5: Carefully Apply Your Glass Etching Cream
Now comes the transformative part: applying the etching cream. We used Armour Etch cream, which we purchased at a discount from a local craft store. Before you begin, put on protective gloves and ensure you’re working in a well-ventilated area, as etching creams contain chemicals that can irritate skin and airways. Using your small paintbrush, apply a generous, even layer of the etching cream over all the exposed glass within your tape stencil. Don’t be shy with the application; a thin layer might result in an uneven etch. The painter’s tape acts as your barrier, preventing the cream from seeping beyond your intended design. Ensure all areas you want etched are thoroughly covered.

Step 6: The Waiting Game (and Monitoring!)
This step requires patience and observation. The instructions on etching cream often provide a general guideline, but the exact waiting time can vary depending on the type of glass, the desired depth of the etch, and critically, the durability of your stencil material. Since painter’s tape isn’t as robust as a vinyl stencil, we kept a close eye on our jar. After about 90 seconds, we noticed the edges of the tape beginning to soften slightly, indicating that the etching cream was slowly working its way through. While a longer wait typically results in a deeper, more pronounced etch, it also increases the risk of the cream seeping under your stencil if it starts to degrade. For a painter’s tape stencil, 1 to 2 minutes is generally a safe and effective timeframe to achieve a noticeable etch without compromising the stencil’s integrity. Trust your observation and remove the cream when you feel the etch is sufficient.
Step 7: Rinse Off Cream & Carefully Remove Stencil
Once you’ve allowed the etching cream sufficient time to work its magic (approximately 1.5 minutes for our project), it’s time to reveal your design. Carefully take your jar to a sink and rinse off all the etching cream under running water. Be thorough, ensuring no residue remains. Once rinsed, gently peel away your painter’s tape stencil. Exercise caution during this step to avoid scratching your freshly etched surface or leaving behind any sticky residue. We encountered a tiny bit of bleeding between the “k” and “s” – a common minor imperfection in DIY etching – but overall, the result was a beautifully frosted and personalized “Thanks Jar” ready for its purpose.

Step 8: Begin Filling Your Jar with Daily Gratitude!
With your magnificent “Thanks Jar” complete, the real tradition begins! Sherry prepared a stack of small notecards using lovely fall-colored scrapbooking paper, setting the perfect autumnal tone. Our family’s goal is to write one note of gratitude per day throughout November. By the 30th, we aim to have accumulated at least sixty unique expressions of thankfulness (two per day if both adults participate). To add an element of fun and anticipation, we’ve implemented a strict “no peeking” policy. This means the content of each note remains a secret until the very end of the month, building excitement for a delightful family reveal. Imagine the heartwarming experience of reading through all the collective joys and blessings that touched your family’s lives that year!

BONUS: Preserve Your “Thanks Jar” Notes for Years to Come
The “Thanks Jar” is more than just a month-long activity; it’s an evolving family archive of cherished memories and grateful reflections. As the month of November concludes, don’t let those precious notes get lost. We highly recommend preserving them! Consider punching a hole in each card and stringing them onto a beautiful ribbon, or collecting them in a binder ring for easy flipping. You could even dedicate a special scrapbook to house your yearly gratitude collections. Imagine the joy of breaking out your “Thanks Jar” next year, not only to start a new collection but also to relive all the wonderful things you were grateful for in previous years. This ongoing tradition allows your family to build a unique history of appreciation, marking milestones and everyday blessings.

This simple practice can truly become a treasured family tradition. As children like Clara grow older, they can add their own heartfelt “thanks” to the pile, creating a multi-generational legacy of gratitude. We adore the idea of having a yearly account of everything that we’re thankful for – it’s like a personal diary, but without the pressure of extensive writing. Just a quick scribble of one small thing each day for a month is all it takes to build this invaluable collection of memories and positive affirmations.
