Master Bedroom Transformation: Creating a Stunning Family Photo Gallery Wall
Our master bedroom has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis over the past few days, evolving from a sparse, empty space with just a bed into a truly personalized sanctuary. The key to this dramatic change? The strategic addition of frames, meticulously hung curtains, and even more frames, ultimately culminating in a breathtaking gallery wall.

From Blank Canvas to Beloved Space: The “Before” Story
For nearly nine months since we initially painted our master bedroom, it remained a rather uninspired space, largely resembling the “before” picture you see here. It desperately craved warmth and personality, with curtains being an immediate necessity. While those are still a work in progress, let’s dive into the exciting part: the collection of frames that have utterly transformed this room.

Choosing the Perfect Frames: A Bold Design Choice
The idea of a grand gallery wall above our bed had been a recurring conversation for months. After considerable deliberation, we decided to break away from conventional white frames and opted for a more sophisticated, dramatic look: large, dark wood frames paired with crisp white mats. This decision aligned perfectly with our long-term goal of gradually investing in higher-quality frames throughout our home – specifically, real wood frames featuring substantial mats and genuine glass, not plexiglass, for a more elevated aesthetic.
Our search led us to Michaels, where we discovered these exquisite large wood frames that perfectly fit our vision and budget. At $39 for the largest size and $29 for the slightly smaller option, they weren’t exactly inexpensive. However, a timely two-for-one sale brought the average cost down to a much more palatable $15 to $20 per frame, a price point closer to what we’d typically spend on less premium frames of that size. This allowed us to acquire a significant number of high-quality frames without breaking the bank, setting the stage for our ambitious gallery wall project.

Designing the Layout: The Art of Paper Templates and Iteration
With our initial haul of frames secured, the next crucial step was determining the perfect layout. Sherry ingeniously cut numerous templates from leftover rosin paper, a material we frequently use for various DIY projects like spray painting and grouting. These paper templates became our invaluable planning tools, allowing us to visualize the arrangement without committing to any holes in the wall.
We began by taping up a rough, mostly-symmetrical arrangement. While it was a solid starting point, neither of us was entirely convinced. It felt a little too rigid, too perfectly aligned – almost prescriptive. Seeking a more organic and relaxed feel, Sherry experimented with “unbuttoning” the rows and columns, creating a slightly looser, more asymmetrical flow. This subtle adjustment instantly transformed the aesthetic, making the gallery wall feel effortlessly casual and inviting, a significant improvement over our initial, more formal attempt. This iterative process of using templates proved indispensable, preventing countless unnecessary nail holes and ensuring we achieved the exact look we envisioned.

The Hanging Process: Precision, Patience, and Simple Tools
Once the layout was finalized, it was time to bring our vision to life. Considering we had a substantial collection of 17 frames at this stage, the actual hanging process was surprisingly manageable. These particular frames were designed for easy installation, featuring a convenient groove on the back lip of the wood that allowed them to hang securely on just one or two nails each. This design, combined with our carefully pre-planned template arrangement, streamlined the entire process.
To ensure a cohesive and balanced display, especially since the arrangement mirrored itself on either side of the bed, we relied on a few essential tools. A laser level proved invaluable for achieving consistent heights, ensuring that frames on the left precisely matched their counterparts on the right. A simple yardstick helped us maintain uniform side-to-side gaps between frames, contributing to the overall visual harmony. This methodical approach ensured that each frame found its perfect spot, resulting in a professional-looking finish that belied the DIY effort.

Expanding the Vision: From Stripe to Full Wall of Memories
After hanging the initial set of frames, we were delighted with the progress, but a subtle feeling persisted that the arrangement felt a little too much like a single “stripe” across the top of the bed. To create a more impactful, “full-wall-of-frames” aesthetic, we decided to expand the display. This meant acquiring five additional frames to fill the space above each nightstand, truly enveloping the bed in a tapestry of memories.
Ultimately, our completed gallery wall comprised a total of five larger frames (measuring 11.5 x 14.5 inches with an 8 x 10-inch mat opening) and seventeen slightly smaller 16.5 x 16.5-inch frames (some with 8 x 10-inch openings and others with 5 x 7-inch openings). This thoughtful mix of sizes added visual interest and depth to the overall composition. It’s worth noting that we later made a minor adjustment, shifting a few frames to rebalance a bare spot on the top left near the curtain, a tweak that significantly improved the overall equilibrium of the wall (you’ll spot this refinement in photos further down).

Curating Our Family Memories: Choosing the Perfect Photos
While we advocate for framing almost anything, our master bedroom felt like the ideal place for a deeply personal display: a wall dedicated to cherished family photos. We realized we had a treasure trove of special moments that deserved to be properly showcased. The idea of seeing these memories printed in a beautiful large size, like 8×10, was particularly appealing, especially for a private and intimate space such as our bedroom. We meticulously selected a collection of our favorites and placed an in-store pickup order through Target’s website, discovering that they offered a more cost-effective option for 8×10 prints compared to our usual go-to, Shutterfly.

Once all the prints were nestled in their frames, the wall truly came alive. We deliberately opted for vibrant, colorful prints instead of classic black and white. This choice created a beautiful contrast against our dark bedroom wall, adding a cheerful energy to the space. The combination of the classic, handsome dark wood frames and crisp white mats with the lively, colorful family photos strikes a perfect balance. Furthermore, the bolder hues within the prints beautifully echo the colors of our decorative pillows and our unique headboard, tying the entire room’s design together seamlessly.

The Photo Selection Strategy: Capturing Authentic Moments
The process of selecting photos was systematic yet intuitive. We scrolled through our family photo folders in iPhoto, each organized chronologically by year, flagging potential favorites. This initial sweep, however, yielded an overwhelming number of options. To distill this vast collection down to the 22 prints we needed, we adopted a “favorites from favorites” approach – a method we find easier than actively deciding which photos to exclude. We prioritized authenticity over staged perfection, subconsciously choosing photos that captured genuine “moments in time” rather than posed, camera-staring shots. We felt that too many direct gazes might create an unsettling effect in a personal space like the bedroom. Consequently, most of our chosen photos feature subjects looking down, at each other, or off to the side, with only a few instances where eyes meet the lens, like the charming Teddy beach shot in the top left corner.

Unveiling Hidden Themes: Water, Travel, and Home
It wasn’t until the entire gallery was hung that we noticed some delightful, unexpected commonalities among our chosen photographs. Stepping back, we chuckled at the prevalence of “all that water.” A remarkable one-third of our gallery features us on beaches, by lakes, or enjoying pools. This likely stems from the fact that many of our most cherished memories are captured during our family trips. In fact, we identified photos representing six different states, from the stunning landscapes of Alaska and Hawaii to the sunny shores of Florida and Delaware. Another amusing discovery was that three of the photos displayed were actually taken right on the very bed they now adorn! This collection truly highlights our family’s dual passions: a love for travel and an undeniable affection for cozy time spent right here in our own bed.

The Emotional Impact of Our New Family Gallery Wall
With every frame in place, our formerly nondescript bedroom wall has been completely transformed into a vibrant, photographic celebration of our family. It’s become the first and last thing we gaze upon each day, a constant source of joy and reflection. While we deeply loved the frame hallway in our previous home, an arrangement we thought could never be surpassed, this new family gallery wall in our master bedroom stands proudly beside it as an equally cherished display.
Even the pictures positioned behind the lamp, which might appear obscured at first glance, are surprisingly visible from various angles within the room – particularly from the bed itself or when walking in. It truly is all about the perspective!

We genuinely hope that this beautiful new family wall will serve as a constant encouragement to continue capturing and documenting our family moments, big and small. It doesn’t even require a fancy camera; we’ve realized that almost half of the photos gracing this wall were taken with our iPhones or an old point-and-shoot camera, proving that the most important thing is simply to preserve the memories.

Clara was enjoying her nap when we finished the final touches, presenting the perfect opportunity for Teddy and Burger to strike a pose. Given our tendency to frame photos taken right on this very bed, there’s a strong possibility this charming shot might just find its way onto the wall eventually. How wonderfully meta, indeed!

A Look Back: The Journey to Our Dream Bedroom
It’s genuinely hard for us to recall the “before” state of this room without consulting the actual photographs. The transformation has been so profound that the memory of its previous emptiness has almost faded.

…But we are immensely grateful for how far it has come. While it currently feels a little “busy” to us, we believe a few remaining items on our to-do list will bring it to perfect completion. Our plans include replacing the bench at the foot of the bed with a more suitable option and adding proper end tables, which will allow us to relocate the dresser to another wall. We also still need to finalize the curtains and install an overhead light, among other smaller tasks. It’s a slow and steady process, but each step brings us closer to our ideal master retreat.
