Decking Our New Home for Christmas

Moving into a new home is an adventure in itself, a whirlwind of boxes, decisions, and endless possibilities. But embarking on this journey right before the holiday season? That adds an entirely new layer of joyous chaos. For us, navigating stacks of unpacked boxes and the general disarray of a recent move meant we knew perfection wasn’t on the horizon before the festive spirit officially descended. Yet, there was an undeniable pull to infuse our brand-new space with the warmth and wonder of Christmas, especially for our little one’s very first holiday season. Taking just an hour to dive into the decorating spirit felt like a prescription for happiness, a necessary pause amidst the unpacking frenzy, and a beautiful way to begin crafting new family traditions in our nascent home. This delicate balance of embracing the present while dreaming of the future truly encapsulates the essence of our new home holiday decor.

The centerpiece of any holiday celebration, of course, is the Christmas tree. We found what felt like the perfect sanctuary for ours in the corner of the living room. This spot, strategically nestled near the sliding doors that open out into the inviting sunroom and the convenient doorway connecting to the kitchen, immediately anchored the room with festive cheer. The twinkling lights and the scent of pine instantly transformed the space, pushing back against the lingering echoes of moving trucks and cardboard. Setting up the tree, much like we did for the first time in our old house, was more than just decorating; it was an act of nesting, a declaration that this house, with all its current imperfections and future potential, was officially becoming our home. The act of choosing its spot, unfurling its branches, and adorning it with beloved ornaments became a cherished memory, marking our first Christmas in this new house with a profound sense of belonging.

Beyond the Christmas tree setup, personal touches continued to emerge from the sea of boxes, each piece a thread weaving into the tapestry of our new home’s character. One of my absolute favorites, a cherished Pottery Barn wreath, a thoughtful gift from John’s mom a few years ago, found its place with pride. We hung it on the back of the fireplace in the living room – a fireplace that currently stands as a single-sided architectural feature but dreams of someday becoming a grand, double-sided focal point, bridging two spaces with its warmth and design potential. For now, I find myself frequently gazing at that empty green bookcase adjacent to the hearth, my imagination already painting vivid scenes of a roaring fire, casting dancing shadows and infusing the room with a quintessential cozy glow. This elegant wreath, with its timeless charm, serves as a beautiful placeholder, hinting at the potential and the cozy evenings yet to come in this evolving space, perfectly embodying our evolving holiday decorating ideas.

Venturing to the other side of that same fireplace, we enter the eat-in section of the kitchen. Here, the current aesthetic is a striking contrast to the future vision. The walls boast an undeniably bold paneling, the brickwork surrounding the fireplace is decidedly dark, and the flooring features a vibrant red tile. It’s a combination that, frankly, can be described as “ka-raaaazy” in its current form – a design statement from a bygone era that we eagerly anticipate transforming through a comprehensive kitchen holiday decor update. Yet, even amidst this dramatic backdrop, there’s an undeniable sweetness in the temporary holiday decor we’ve managed to arrange, creating a cheerful, albeit transitional, festive oasis. It’s a clear illustration of our home renovation journey, where we find joy in small victories and creative solutions.

This fireplace mantel decor, despite its flamboyant surroundings, has become a charming display of our collective holiday spirit. Our personalized stockings hang here, each telling a small part of our evolving family story: John and I, ever the team, share one, a symbolic gesture of our partnership, while Clara and our beloved canine companion, Burger, each get their very own, symbolizing their unique place in our hearts and home. Beside them, a scattering of my little faux presents adds a whimsical touch, hinting at the magic of gift-giving without the actual clutter, a perfect example of DIY holiday decor. A few delicate feather trees bring a touch of natural elegance, complementing the ceramic fruit and birds that introduce a playful, vintage charm. Topping it all off, our whimsical cardboard snowflake wreath provides another charming handmade accent, proving that even simple, crafted items can contribute significantly to the festive ambiance. These carefully chosen pieces collectively work their magic, transforming a space that is currently a riot of color and texture into a place filled with warmth and holiday cheer, reminding us of the joy to come once we break out the primer and paint to lighten and modernize everything. It’s a testament to the power of decor to temporarily bridge the gap between “what is” and “what will be,” keeping spirits bright until our renovation dreams can truly unfold, making a house a home, one festive detail at a time.

As the unpacking continued, amidst the delightful chaos of discovering long-forgotten treasures, a particular find caught my eye: those adorable silver zebra-ish plates from Crate & Barrel, acquired a few years back. Immediately, a spark of inspiration ignited. Why not defy conventional placement and stick them right up on the mantel? After all, it’s a kitchen, a space often celebrated for its practicality, but equally deserving of playful decor that reflects personal style. This spontaneous decision added a wonderful, unexpected shot of holiday sparkle, elevating the temporary festive arrangements and providing a much-needed visual uplift. These little gems became an instant focal point, allowing my eyes to rest on their charming gleam instead of the overwhelming paneling – a small but effective trick to shift focus and bring joy to the eye. It’s moments like these, finding new purposes for beloved items, that truly define the process of making a house a home, especially when working with existing aesthetics that are earmarked for future transformation. Every small detail contributes to building the personality of a space, even before the major renovations begin, and these plates became an unexpected hero of our temporary kitchen holiday decor.

The vision of brightening things up in there, particularly in the kitchen and around the fireplace, is a constant and exciting thought. We eagerly anticipate the day we can fully implement our design plans, transforming the current bold colors and textures into a fresh, airy, and modern aesthetic. The prospect of primer and paint becoming our closest allies in this endeavor brings a palpable sense of anticipation for this significant phase of our home renovation journey. And speaking of paint, we recently achieved a significant milestone: tackling Clara’s room this past weekend! It felt incredibly good to shed the “moving clothes” and slip back into our familiar painting attire, a symbol of progress and the joy of hands-on home improvement. For her new nursery, we opted for a direction that is entirely different from her last room, reflecting an evolution in our design preferences and a fresh start in this new chapter. We are incredibly excited about the results and can’t wait to snap some beautiful pictures and share all the details and inspiration behind our nursery decor ideas with you very soon. This journey of transforming each space, one brushstroke at a time, is truly making this new house feel more and more like our beloved home, filled with personal touches and dreams coming to life, underscoring the magic of moving during holidays and embracing change.

As we navigate the exciting, sometimes overwhelming, but always rewarding process of settling into our new home and preparing for our first holiday season here, the emphasis remains on creating memories and personalizing our space. From the grand gesture of the Christmas tree to the smallest detail on the mantel, each decoration tells a story of adaptation, anticipation, and the pure joy of making a new house feel like a cherished home.
